For years now the CTXP team has wanted to take on a police motor officer skills competition, or “rodeo,” and thanks to the folks at the COTPMCO Zack and Ari were allowed to saddle up next to the best in the 2022 Chute Out. Do the boys have what it takes to keep up with some of the best law enforcement riders in the country? The time has come to find out.
Proceeds from the Capitol Of Texas Police Motorcycle Chute Out (cotpmco.org) go in part to the Sunshine Kids Foundation (sunshinekids.org), aiming to make a small difference in the lives of children with cancer.
Special thanks to Tiffany Curnutt & the COTPMCO, Donnie Williams, Scott Jobe, and David Magers!

As a motocop, I really appreciated this video. I could probably ride a cone course better than you but I doubt I could run a race track or a single track as good as either of you. It's all the same controls but the "feel" of it is different. I'm perfectly fine to let my 850lb Harley dance around in tight manuevers. But when the front tire of my 450lb 650cc street bike comes off the ground and the handlebars get light (especially when not expected), I get nervous even though the controls are fundamentally the same. It comes down to experience I suppose. There are many types of riding skilsets. I want to be proficient in all of them all. This was a cool video.

You cant ride a bike in traffic your hole life, on just pure luck… Got to get that skill… And you get so much better after just 5-15 min of train a day. And it get so much more fun riding also.
So much more control, and you can concentrate only on the traffic, see what others are doing in front of you. So they don't even come close to hitting you ever again. And you riding goes automatic.

Most of the BMW motorcycles depreciate pretty quick. A bike that was $20K new will be $7k in a few years.
I think a big part of it is fear of some maintenance issues. There can be problems with the shaft drive, and things like a clutch replacement can be a much bigger deal compared to more traditional bikes.
And, 70K miles on a police bike is going to be like 120K on a normal bike. Most police vehicles are a very rough service environment with lots of idle time followed up with a high load acceleration.

Living in Europe I had to go through the licensing process 3 times for the A1, A2 and A licenses. Since I was riding continuously ever since I got the first one the other two were just a formality. Still I had to put in the hours but the instructors could tell I was comfortable on the bike so they let me do whatever. The licensing course of course is much easier but I'd set personal challenges for myself like going the A1 slalom which is tighter with the bigger bikes, as fast as I could, throwing the bike around so fast I felt like I'd be thrown off. I'd do the slow lane course as slow as I could clocking in a PR of 47 seconds for the 25long and 40cm wide lane, pinning the throttle on the emergency braking lane and slamming on the brakes after the brake marker to stop with my wheel on the box and all sorts of other things.
What surprised me was that even though each single day felt hopeless and frustrating, every time I'd get on the bike on the next day I'd immediately feel more confident and skilled the next and doing with ease things that felt insurmountable the day before. It's amazing what a few hours of parking lot drills can do. Never neglect training or assume you're good enough to not need it. If you have a space you can use and the time available definitely make a habit of it.

Awesome episode !!! I have done one small competition in my country that had the similar idea. The track was longer and there was space between different turns and shapes. More like motorcycle gymkhana style. Learnt a lot, and I'm much more confident with my bike in very tight spaces than I was before. Oh and had lots of fun as well. Highly recommend it to all riders to at least practice this.

Guys, I hope you’re still seeing comments on this video as it’s 11 months old. I’ve got to tell you this is a real exciting video. I understand the jitters. I drive school bus and have done bus driver rodeo. Not like this at all but same concept. We gotta put those buses through some very very tight obstacles. It’s fun and competitive. All designed to train us to get through tight places we come up on.
    Very exciting to watch this.

@@kingkrimson8771 The wet clutch on the Harley tends to work a bit smoother when you're in the friction zone to manage speed. Dry clutches will tend to grab and accelerate quickly when you aren't careful. The BMW in this video has a dry clutch but the rider managed it really well particularly when they did the tethered ride. It also has fully integrated brakes too meaning you always have both brakes working whether you use front only or back only. There's a portioning valve that regulates how much of each depending on which you use. If you use some trail braking with the back brake you will still get a percentage of the front brake as well. Riding courses like this are faster if you can avoid braking at all.

You guys did great for the limited training you had. Very much to be proud of and now you have new skills in your bag.
As a civilian rider who has trained and competed, I know exactly how you guys were feeling on your first rodeo test day. When it came time for my speed run I did everything wrong. I was calm, cool and clean on my precision runs, but when the stopwatch came out my nerves pinned the needle.
After you get comfortable with this type of riding, everything on the road seems easier to deal with and it becomes second nature. Keep practicing and you’ll kill it on your next trip to the cone fields.
I thoroughly enjoyed your video. It brought back a lot of feelings and it introduced this type of riding to a much larger audience. Thank you guys. Safe rides.
