Just to add something: With an offset, if you pick the right mount, your primary and secondary optics can be mounted at (virtually) the same height over bore, meaning you can use the same zero and the same holds with both.

Well said!! Which also makes offset combo a super fast long-range target acquisition tool. We frequently keep our LPVO at max magnification, and only use the offset dot to get on target. Once the gun is lined up, by simply rolling the gun you have instant, and near perfect sight picture. I can drop pigs at 400m before the guy next to me finish zooming his LPVO...

I know it goes against the whole "pick one rifle" vibe that I definitely see the wisdom of, but I've kind of transitioned to a GP-Day and GP-Night rifle. GP-Night is an 11.5" dedicated suppressed with all the IR goodies and a T2 on a unity mount. GP-Day is a 16" with just a flashlight and a good LPVO. Because I gotta face it, most of my use is either flat range larping or truck camping where I can pack two rifles. I’ve learned that if you want to build a rifle that can do both, then you really need to solely kit it as an NV rifle.
That often leaves you with a shorter rifle that’s using a red dot with an illuminator of some kind. Thus, you are limited to 300 yards and in, but that’s the same niche for NV and day time.

After all, you’re still looking through a red dot even though it’s offset and slightly smaller versus down a tube with an eye box. Plus it enables you to keep the lpvo on a magnified setting and quickly go to the offset for close up shots vs having to dial back to zero so in that aspect it’s even faster.

I run a primary arms first focal plane 1-8 on my 13.7 AR with an arisaka offset mount and a holosun 509T. I don't have night vision (yet) so I don't have to worry about NV performance as far as my optics go. I like having the ability to leave my 1-8 on 4x and run my red dot for 100 yards and in. Given my range goes out to 500 yards, and my neighbor has told me I'm allowed to shoot any hogs I see on his property, I might be shooting anywhere from 0-500 yards. I like the 1-8 for medium to long range shooting and the offset red dot for anything within about 100 yards. The 1x on my 1-8 is perfectly fine, but light transmission at night time is not as good as the red dot.

Hop, I really appreciate this content, I'm just getting started with shooting at distance with my 20" rifle stock AR (I know some would say it's not the best AR style to get for closer shooting/4x distance at most, though I've mostly just used irons with it so far) but I got it with the intent to eventually use it at range, and this type of content really helps me get a good idea for how to setup a red dot once I get a scope I like, and actually lists affordable options, which I appreciate as I'm what James Reeves would refer to as one of the "poor's" in jest
(as some of us do things that help people like nursing, delivering food in our free time, working at a machine shop, helping out at our local homeless shelter, doing jobs that require manual labor instead of being an expensive lawyer and UA-camr, but he does do mailroom so I guess minus the free drinks that evens it out)
Also, 2:08 that looks awfully familiar.. I wonder who gave you that for reviewing...
But in seriousness keep up these videos, I've been watching even the videos you recommend as boring and have plenty of PowerPoint slides...
Makes me consider 300blackout if only the ammo was cheap enough... Though you make an excellent case for just skipping 7.62x39
Then again, cheap ammo is a good excuse for a PSA AK...
Until I finally settle down and just go for 300 blackout, and buy some pink furniture if I got an AK to give the wife(she loves pink despite the stereotypes)
But I really love these videos for the few range toys I have/am considering
Even if I disagree just because of cost, as supporting certain charities comes after personal protection, but before range toys
Or at least in my priority list...
Sadly anything involving nighttime without a flashlight is well outside my reach for the foreseeable future...
But please! Keep kicking out awesome videos like this!

I don't think this was mentioned but I like an auto-on feature of a red dot to pair with a magnified fixed or variable optic. The ability to have a long lasting battery life on a firearm that's ready to shot as soon as you pick it up is a great benefit, especially on illuminated lpvos that kill batteries. Also not having to reach up and change magnification from higher power when changing to close targets is nice.

Now if only they'd offer the Viper and/or Venom with night vision settings so you don't have to use an adapter plate. I know Primary Arms has tinkered with that forward mount on their higher magnification prism scopes too but I think they've just used a sectino of rail and they're dramatically heavier than the Spitfire 5x even before adding chonk. I think it's a sign the market is moving away from the tried-and-true ACOG solution where it's mounted to the rear.
