    I remember reading something about this sort of concept called "The One Percent Theory" that I think sums up this whole situation perfectly.
    Basically it's idea is that no matter what your fandom is about or even how big it is, no matter what, there is always going to be 1% of people in a fandom are just going to be absolutely crazy. And the bigger a fandom gets the more bigger that 1% gets, and if that 1% is lucky, it gets showcased above the other 99% of what the fandom represents because it's the more eye catching part that everyone can point and make fun of. It doesn't matter if the rest of the fans don't do or are even against that behavior, if they call themselves a fan, the people of the internet will always be associating with bad fans and that makes them bad too.
    So it's kind of hypocritical really. People who rant about how a fanbase is terrible just because of a few people in hopes of... I guess making fandoms better, they're actually contributing to the problem just as much as crazy fans are, since they're not allowing a fanbase to be more than the 1%

    • @darrienjones8917
      @darrienjones8917 5 років тому +6

      @Alex Meggoe But should the rest of the fandom have to pay for the mistakes of 1%? Why should they have to be great people to negate put the bad of a few people? The burden shouldn't be put on them, but on those doing the misdeeds. And seeing as saying they denounce those people isn't good enough it still comes back to somehow being the entire groups fault. That's unjust.

    • @desmondnomad9844

      @Alex Meggoe What about Us Sonic fans? I tell you, there are a lot of great Sonic fans out there making cool fan games, beautiful fan art, and awesome covers of already great Sonic music, and yet there are always those people who still mock us and say that we are just a bunch of FUCKING RETARDS, WHO APPARENTLY WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH WHAT I CAN ONLY DESCRIBE AS ONE OF THE WORST SONIC CHARACTERS EVER! A CHARACTER SO BAD THAT I WON'T EVEN DARE SAY IT'S NAME!!!
      Sorry about that rant, it hurts being a part of a fanbase that seems to have all of its amazing details swept under the rug just for the lols.

    • @desmondnomad9844
      @desmondnomad9844 4 роки тому

      @Alex Meggoe Agreed, on that note, I think another reason why certain fandoms are considered toxic while others aren't is tied with the public image of the franchise they associate with. People think "Sonic sucks, his fans must suck too." Or, "Rick and Morty looks weird, so should the fans." (I'm not calling you guys weird) That's why you probably don't hear anything about the Mario fandom being called toxic, because everyone says that "Mario is perfect, so his fans must be perfect." Maybe that's not the case, but idk it's just a thought that was floating in the back of my head.

      The Rpg Monger I don't want to come as rude or anything, but your videos and your audience makes the same mistakes, sort of. While you do spend some time (not enough, if you ask me) explaining that what your about to say only represent a minority, the way your videos are made, the thumbnails and all that don't convey the same message. And a quick look at the comments can confirm that unless your audience is a part of the said fandom, they tend to generalize just as much as anyone else.

      Honestly way too true. I constantly say "I don't get where the League is toxic," comes from because most of my game experiences are rather good. Maybe it's because I don't consider calling someone a monkey, because they're feeding when you tell them _exactly what they should be doing,_ toxic but... For the most part I follow "as long as you're not bad at the game, you won't see people flame you." And it's mostly true.

    I always hear people talk about how they don’t want to get into a show or game not because it’s a bad show/game but because the fandom ruins it and that shit drives me crazy.
    I’m just glad to hear someone with a level head speak the fact of the matter. So thank you.

    Another problem that I wish you covered is that we have a psychological tendency to remember bad events far more often than we remember good events. This often leads us to forgeting about the good thing and only focus in on the bad ones. This then leads to situations where we believe that communities or.groups of people are disproportionately bad.

      Chameleonred5: Exactly.
      There's a webcomic I used to read that had crystal people who reproduced by budding a new crystal person off of their body, which were regarded as an all female race.
      There's a much better comic that I still read that includes an alien race that is monogender, with all members of the species being both egg and child bearing. The species in question has physical variation enough that the members of it look male or female to human eyes, but ALL of them are pretty much the same underneath the metaphorical hood.
      It's much better than Steven Universe' "They're one gender but they all look like women."

    I'll explain this in a story
    There was once an apple tree that a farmer usually picks apples from and sells them. Usually, the apples are fresh. One day, two apples on the tree went rotten. The farmer didn't realize this and picks them away. He then sells them. Everyone took the fresh ones except two customers. The first customer demanded a refund when he noticed the apple was rotten and got what he wanted, then he left. The second customer took a bite off his apple anyway and threw up. The farmer tried to apologize but the customer pushed him away. Filled with anger, he left, disgusted, and told everyone about his foul experience with the farmer's apple. The next day the farmer sold his apples again, all of them were fresh, but less customers came. When he came home, he realized that the apple tree was chopped down by the people that the second customer talked to about the rotten apple.

    As a Brony, I understand how stupidly people can act when it comes to a fandom. A furry told me that he thought the Brony fandom should be "purged." When I asked why, they responded with "because they sexualize a cartoon for little girls." I pointed out how they were making broad generalizations about Bronies based on a minority. Part if me also wanted to point out how furries are stigmatized in a similar fashion, but I refrained from doing so.

    1000% agree with this. As someone who is a Steven Universe fan, this fandom is probably the biggest victim to being pinned as a toxic fandom, despite those reasons why only applying to a VERY small amount of it. But hey, if the SAO hatdom have showed me anything, as long as it's popular to hate on something, no one will judge you for it no matter how wrong it is. Thank you so much for bringing up this issue.

Things don't get popular unless they, are quality, are bad enough to rag on, are interesting enough that premise/art/music/etc. can carry discussion. Both AF and SU have a lot of positive(and some critical)discussion, so I can assume there is genuine quality to be found in the work.

    • @TheSuperSaturos
      @TheSuperSaturos 6 років тому +8

      The thing is, in every fandom there is, those 5 people exist, right? But every fandom has their own 5 people, they're not all the same kind. For example:
      Anime fandom - elitist jerks
      Undertale fandom - see Undertale references in everything, very similar to Jojo fans
      Final Fantasy fandom - the oldschool fans can be really annoying, only FF1 up to 7 (sometimes 8) were good, the rest is trash
      Persona fandom - "Persona 3 was the only good one because it's dark and I'm an edgy teen."
      The list goes on, but I think you get the picture with only these 4.

But yea pepole who refrance a specifc thing over and over kinda get annoying, especially out of any conversation about it , but then again joko is built off of refrances kinda so eh kinda a "draw" there i guess you could call it.

      @TheSuperSaturos 6 років тому +2

      noathegod 1 Well, Undertale fans are calmer now, but 2 years ago they were like a pest, they were everywhere and they were annoying, like mosquitos.
      For example, hear this song: ua-cam.com/video/SJkj3DgW8Y0/v-deo.html
      Now, if you have the time and patience, scroll down the comments until 2 years ago (maybe you don't even need to go that far) and you'll see that most people are quoting Undertale stuff.
      And then there's this cover: ua-cam.com/video/GkNt8_aMcXk/v-deo.html
      The singer, from 2:05 onward, is dressed like Sans (blue hoodie and white shirt). See why it pisses me off? Saying this song relates to Undertale is stupid because the song's about treason, deception and revenge. In that case, many other songs like Devil in Disguise by Elvis Presley and Nightmare by A7X are also there for Undertale. And why Undertale? Why not Naruto, for example? I mean, it also has a good guy that betrayed his friends. Why not even the Bible? Satan is a perfect example of deception, treason and revenge.
      Do you see my point?

    • @Paradox1012

    People would generally never see this weird side of the fanbase if people didnt keep sharing it and sharing it and generalizing the entire fanbase as these people, then people are turned away from the show or thing because its "cringy" to like it

    Honestly, I see a lot of "toxic fandom" cpmplaints used as proxy for attacking shows they don't like. They look for thw most indefensible behavior from the fandom and use it to avoid the hard work of actual criticism. Not always, but I do see it a lot.
    The average fandom experience involves two behaviors:

    Thank god someone said it. I hate that I have to feel embarrassed to like something like Five Nights at Freddy’s as an adult just because of its “bad fandom.” Did it use to be pretty bad? A bit yeah, but it hasn’t been bad since 2016.
    At this point the haters of the fandom are way worse. One time I was scrolling the subreddit on my phone, and someone walked up to me and said “is that Fnaf?” I answered yes and he said “ugh that’s a stupid kids game that died years ago. Has a horrible fandom.” (Or something along the lines of that it was a while ago.) all the people who were just there for the trend are gone, and in its place are people who just genuinely love the games and its lore. We kinda just wanna be left alone now.
    If I’m afraid to talk about something in public, and sometimes feel like a “closeted fan” when I’m with my friends , maybe we’re not the toxic ones anymore.

  • @Ranylyn
    @Ranylyn 6 років тому +27

    I agree that every fanbase has it's bad people. However, I do have another hypothesis as to why some fanbases seem disproportionately bad. You're definitely right about how the extremes stick out, are noticeable, and are more memorable, and this is something I've held true for years... but in the past year or so, I've come up with an idea that seems to hold true as far as negativity is concerned. Something that compounds with it to accentuate the effect.
    As a Canadian, I'm aware that my country has a reputation for being the polite ones, right? Obviously, we have our fair share of complete and utter jerks (With millions of people, it's bound to happen.) What sets us apart from our "often seen as rude" (And for the record, I know a lot of Americans and most are all right) southern neighbors? Simple: Population Density.
    I'm not joking, and hear me out, this actually makes perfect sense:
    A bad interaction with a jerk can ruin your day. It's a lot harder to act cordially when you're upset. The more people around you, the higher the odds that someone is a jerk. The more people around a jerk, the more people they negatively impact those around them with their vitriol. Now, look at the population density of Canada and the USA; Canada averages 1000 people in 273.8 square km, while the USA averages 1000 people in 30.16 km.
    You probably see where I'm going with this; it's a chain reaction of hate. The more people there are interacting, the more the negativity catches on and makes more people feel negatively, which makes it harder to act positively. Whether it's a densely packed country or a populous fandom, this does catch on. I feel that the larger a fandom gets, the percentage of negavitity does increase based on this, which acts as a boost to getting it noticed.
    Unfortunately, this idea is still in the hypothesis stage since I have no way of actually testing it, so any guesses I make at numbers would be complete and utter asspulls. My point is, there will always be good and bad people, but more people means more peoples' days being ruined by the bad people, meaning more people who aren't exactly behaving at their best. There will always be those who just keep their distance and don't let it get to them, just like there will always be those who just want to watch the world burn. This effect on a group's overall negativity could be as minor as 1% or as major as 20, and I have no idea which it is. Still, it makes enough sense that I believe it to be true.

      Kind of a pisser there, that the loudest people yell "Think of the children!" while ignoring actual solutions that would protect the children.

    • @Captain.Mystic
      @Captain.Mystic 6 років тому +5

      ...YOu actually just proved Uniquenameosaurus's point by generalizing like that you know. I know for sure that gun control does not mean 'ban all guns'. People that you got that assumption from are NOT the 50% who actually are trying to pose an actual solution by saying 'background checks' or 'Just make sure the gun cant easily kill 50 people within 5 seconds when positioned 10 stories above'. The second amendment is always going to be there no matter what and people actually recognize that. They just want to make sure that the the unavoidable crazy shooters are manageable or at least minimised.

    • @hariman7727
      @hariman7727 6 років тому +4

      cabinboy1031: But that's the lie. "We won't take your guns" means nothing when the gun laws in liberal states are so restrictive that it's nigh impossible to get a gun.
      That doesn't even cover the fact that some leftist pundits are now calling for the left to be honest about their intentions, and to admit that they want to take guns away from people.
      Nor does it cover that the left will NEVER define "common sense gun laws", or to give any actual laws that would have stopped any of the shootings.
      Or the fact that BOTH the FBI and the local Broward Country Sheriff/Police failed to stop this shooter after 45 police calls, multiple warnings to both the FBI and police, and that the police records that SHOULD have been in the database to keep the shooter from getting the gun in the first place upon a background check.
      It's not a generalization, because that's the strategy the current Democrat party is taking. Demand gun confiscation after a shooting, ignore any potential solutions that would make students/people safer, and then repeat after another shooting.
      It's sad, because the people crying "think of the children!" loudest are ignoring ANYTHING that could protect the children. Like school security being increased to a level similar to how much we protect our money, airports, and politicians. Allowing trained volunteer teachers/staff to carry weapons. (TRAINED VOLUNTEERS, not everyone.) Strengthening our mental health laws and allowing exceptions to the HIPA laws that keep police/doctors/etc from protecting the innocent people from the mentally disturbed. Especially in the cases of kids who start abusing animals, because those kids move onto people if left to their own devices.
      Oh, and that doesn't even cover the unintended consequences of some gun laws. Like how waiting periods for guns kill women who need a gun to protect themselves from an abuser.
      Or the paradoxical fact that we used to have gun clubs and open carry of students carrying guns to school, and no school mass shootings before the early 90s and the DEMOCRAT pushed Gun Free Schools legislation.
      Just please remember: The current left/democrat party in the united states has the goal of total gun control/confiscation, and is quite happy to reach that goal slowly, regardless of the consequences.

      What is extremely leftist is Feminism (Third wave Feminism, not past Feminism) and “Toxic Masculinity”, which are very present in the show. Considering that the entire show creator staff is comprised of a bunch of leftist loonies (their Tumblrs and Twitters should be more than enough evidence of this), it really shouldn’t be that surprising to find leftisms in the show, but as this is a children’s show, so this is propaganda.

    Man, I love a lot of your videos, but this one is a mixed bag at best. You're right that the extremes are a small percentage of the overall fan-base, but your argument about the extremes coming to the forefront goes both ways and that's where it falls apart.
    For some, once the publicized side of the fan-base becomes bad enough, it ruins your enjoyment of the show, game, etc. regardless of how many 'good' fans there are out there.
    Plenty of Undertale fans are perfectly fine, but that doesn't mean the toxic fans didn't ruin the game for several people (just go back and look at what happened to Markiplier).
    When someone says a game has a terrible fanbase, the PERCENTAGE that those fans make up simply doesn't matter. Calling a fandom bad doesn't mean you're implying 50+% of it is bad - how bad or how visible the toxic people are makes a whole lot more difference in the long run. Just as every fandom has bad fans, every fandom has good fans, so judging a fandom comes down more to how extreme each of the two sides are. However, few fandoms have a sizeable portion of *excellent* fans so as to stick out as much as the worst of the worst, so usually the difference between fandoms comes out to how bad those worst fans are.
    And another thing, you automatically (like a great number of others it seems) assume the worst when it comes to peoples' motivations for posts or videos. While it's true that extremes sell, it's also true that extremes are *memorable,* which means its perfectly plausible that IHE (or even the news, though I'm less likely to give them benefit of the doubt) wasn't looking to exploit only talking about the extremes for views, he simply remembered the bad experience far more prominently, enough to make a video about it. Can you blame him? You said it yourself - why WOULD anyone make a video about good fans, the type you barely interact with, unless you are also part of their community?

      Oh no, that was what I meant to imply. I don't think IHE had some ill motive when I said "That wouldn't have made it into the video". Poor phrasing on my part, I guess that's what I was trying to clarify with the bit about hit pieces. I think alot of people just don't think about it.
      As for percentages not mattering, that's what I mean by "if you can't disconnect your association from the minority that's fine"
      For good weighing out bad, I'm not sure, I mean it's not like people make fandom celebration videos in the same way they make fandom 'hit pieces'...

    Look at Madoka, though. While it was still airing, the show brought out mainly the guys who love figuring out the smallest clues and making wild theories. After it ended, this part of the fandom got drowned out by the newcomers, who thought it's the deepest shit ever. And suddenly the fanbase became toxic. Calling a fanbase toxic is mainly about whether you're able to have intelligent conversations. The problem with the "5 percent" that you mention is not that we perceive them as "50 percent", but that they intrude on 100 percent of the conversations.
    Vice versa, *monogatari doesn't have a toxic fanbase, because the toxic people are generally left out of the conversation.
    In essence, some shows just leave more ground for the toxic part of the fanbase to ruin it for the others. And Rick&Morty is one of them.

    I agree with a lot of your points but for the competitive gamers being toxic thing I have to say I'm on the side that LoL actually is filled with a bunch of toxic people and here's why. In my Psych class we were given a project to survey what we saw in daily life so I chose amount of people angry enough to talk shit in online games (more specifically LoL) and over the course of a month I surveyed 60 something games (it as HS and I had no life thus the high amount) and I noticed that in over 70% of the games played there was at least one person willing to talk shit. Now while you mentioned "you don't notice the 9 other people being normal" I will raise you this and say that as long as someone in the match is being shitty it might as well be a majority because it should be more of a total amount of games thing then a person by person thing. (which you could argue is your point cause it is but I'm still gonna say that it should count more as games then people cause that's your experience where as a handful of shitty people getting popular I.E. Rick and morty. Is a way smaller percantile)
    TL:DR I think that LoL kinda deserves the stereo type of mad boiis and ladies cause a large amount of matches have mad people and it should be match by match rather then person by person for team based games.
    P.S. Sorry for writing so much and grammar issues it's 3am and I kinda got lost in my own head. Thanks for reading.

      I have played a variety of FPS games, a variety of Mobas, a variety of RTS's, a huge amount of fighting games and people that rage are in all of them. They are absolutely a minority. You say in 70% of games someone was willing to cause shit, but there's 10 people per game. Given the 60 games, this is 600 people with maybe 42 people raging, less than one percent. There's also a lot of stuff around the definition of raging.

      i agree with pointynives, theirs a difference between playfull shittalking and flaming. and with me, and i have no life and play LoL nearly nonstop. i see one toxic person in maybe 1 out of 6 games and rarely as toxic as ppl joke, ie riven and yasuo mains, i rarely see those. And the reason we know of them is ONLY because they stand out from the rest. And the reason LoL has more is because it's a competitive Moba with over a million people playing it's only natural you'd see it often. Now if you include shittalking and joking as toxic then yeah it's gonna raise the numbers.

    • @jdizzy192
      @jdizzy192 6 років тому +14

      No it's still that one person so the study remains person to person.
      Your study is using a broad stroke, number of matches with toxic players, and applying it to individuals, e.g. the number of toxic player, to refute the point that extremes are what's noticed while ignore that the statement is correct. You still ignore the other 8 people in game that aren't toxic or, because this is a study preformed by a person, players that you perceive as toxic even though they were having a bad game.
      Tl;dr Don't use sweeping generalizations to compare groups to individuals

    While i do agree that the toxic part of every fandom amounts to probably more or less 5% of the entire fandom, i think some fandoms have a more vocal toxic minority than others, which spreads the cringe and adds a certain unwelcoming element to the people who aren't part of the fandom. So i agree with some of the points that you make, but i do believe that some fandoms can be considered more toxic than other

  • @pointynives

    I largely agree with you. Except with RWBY. I don't think they're cringe or anything but I have yet to talk to a fan of RWBY that hasn't proceeded to tell me that I should give the show another chance. That has tried to somehow explain away any issue I have with "it gets better later on though". RWBY fans have a creepy habit of trying to push that show on everyone, even people that watched multiple seasons and still didn't enjoy the show at all.
    Also your avatar isn't cringe, kinda cute really.

      I'm a RWBY fan I guess and I wouldn't force someone to continue a series (I wish Dragon Ball ended in 1989) when it is in decline... though I do think RWBY is worth a watch if you got to Season 3 of the main show.
      It isn't hard to find more skeptical RWBY fans if you look into fatmanfalling and the video makers that he associates with.

      I am a RWBY fan, no a roosterteeth fan. I watch the show because I want it to be good... okay I want it to be decent. Its like watching your kids film project. Even if its terrible you are still gonna watch it. I will admit RWBY does have some redeeming qualities to it, like the anime trope characters. However, I will never recommend it to someone who isn't already a roosterteeth fan. Its an amateur anime being made by an amateur production company, and its watchable with that mindset. If you sat down and watched Red vs Blue, you can definitely sit down and suffer through RWBY, and maybe just maybe find a character you might care about or two.
