    I think cringe is also directly related to feeling emberassed for the other person / people. It's the idea that I would be embarassed if I was in their shoes.

    So the way to avoid being cringe:
    1. Be yourself

      @LMD Sun everyone copies and paste cuz we're biological sponge evolved robots, but focus on what makes you happy including goals towards that and doesn't destroy you and what you care about. nobody wants you to be free and only happy on their own terms. 3. do what you understand like the man above said. don't try to impress anyone be it commoner, scientist, celebrity or whatever cuz they're robots to. you're not a special robot but you are built to preserve your life and interests. also everybody parrots that what you want is shit. don't pay them mind. if your cringe is natural, love it be self aware and joke about it. if you're self aware while cringing it's funny as fuckto those who get the memo. just make sure your brain isn't always off and you don't always sound unintelligible to people you need help from. you need a self disciplined persona, but when you become successful being yourself fly your persona. and you'll change based on what you learn and loose your alter ego maybe. it's hard for me to get my alter ego back i miss him. he liked explosions and tok'n leik diss.

    Cringe is instinctualy placing yourself in the subject's perspective - You feel you're performing the cringe yourself, and therefore you feel embarassed FOR that person.
    That's cringe. That's why something can be cringey to someone and not cringey to another.

    • @greatpower6063

      No cringe is just trying to insult someone by saying they did something a way you didn't like and so it must be bad; its like being a slacker and telling someone who actually cares about their life that they try too hard. It's just like being a complete idiot and telling people who study too hard or know more than you that they are losers. on teh other side of the coin its like collecting manga and telling everyone (as so many anime protagonists do) that "2d woman are 'better' than 3d women".

      Its when people try something and yet dont give it their 100, and are hesitant even though they've already started. It isn't just impression, as sometimes they arent impersonating at all and it still comes off wrong.
      Example:
      Basically, fucking insecure ass kid trying to explain a joke but is too insecure and shy to actually explain it and keeps falling back into his comfort zone, trying to end off the conversation and making it awkward even though in a normal scenario it wont be awkward/cringey, whilst hes still talking and trying to explain his joke.
      Or its when they are insecure/shy over a certain situation, or just not comfortable with it (Same shit), and when they are presented the situation they feel uncomfortable, and rather take in the new experience, they either mask it as if they already been through this new experience, or jump back into their comfort zone and completely reject it, not physically like saying no (as that is still delving yourself completely into the new situation, adding more experience), but just mentally too insecure to believe that they themselves can be in the presented situation . I feel like this is the cringe you're talking about.
      Easy to avoid, once you find out what the fuck it is.
      Know your lane, comfort zone, and when you hop out of it dont keep a leg behind. You need to fully jump out. Dont impersonate as if your comfort zone/lane is different/bigger than it is, rather when you DO try to become what you see is impressive (Which is why you would impersonate) just fully involve yourself into it and take it as an experience, not a mask over who you really are.
      Which actually just contradicts everything I said, so yes. It is impression.

      I'd say cringe is applied when something either attempts to project itself as impressive and fails, or manages to fail a mundane activity in an exceptionally disasterous fashion - usually with a high amount of social exposure.

    • @BradenBest
      @BradenBest 6 років тому +2

      +Dexxus - A mundane activity? You mean like walking up a flight of stairs? I don't see how something like walking up a flight of stairs only to turn around to chat with someone, slipping on a puddle of mayonnaise while turning, rotating around the guard rail and into the adjacent dumpster would be cringy.

    A really insightful video but there's one piece of the cringe puzzle that is left unsolved- Cringe culture in general. Like people who make fun of ANYONE who likes Undertale, or anyone who likes Cuphead, or just anything "cringey". I feel as if cringe culture is actually an after-effect of people who think they are superior than others because they don't like those things. The problem with cringe culture is the fact that people who like said things or partake in the fandoms or anything, aren't trying to impress anyone. They're doing it out of passion yet this cringe culture still exists around them.

  • @fropps1

    Wow, a genuinely insightful video on youtube? What planet am I on?
    I'd like to add that I think empathy has a really strong impact on how we register cringe emotionally (empathy being feeling someone else's emotions). I think that we feel bad when we see someone acting 'cringy' because we can recognise that they're failing to act impressive and so we feel what they should be feeling, which is basically shame.
    This is part of what I find really weird about cringe. If you were told that a group of people on the internet came together in order to watch videos of people acting socially inept, you'd expect that they were laughing at them or shaming them rather than empathising with the person being cringy. In a certain sense they do make fun of them, but that's always secondary to the cringing.

    • @user-js5iy6mb6z
      @user-js5iy6mb6z 6 років тому +46

      Also, important to note that "cringe"/"cringey" has been co-opted as an insult that basically means what you're saying. I.e you should feel shame for how embarrassing your actions are to yourself, but without the connotation of empathy. Saying something is "cringe" can just be a short, snappy, condescending way of saying "you're embarrassing yourself." I just want to point out that It's not always the case that people calling others cringe are, unbeknownst to themselves, secretly admitting that they're empathizing with the person they're calling cringey. Sometimes they're just being dickheads.

    • @UmTois

    • @weslance7913
      @weslance7913 6 років тому +4

      Cringe and shame go hand and hand. Second-hand embarrassment and the resulting shame feelings are probably the gut reactions that make for the *Cringe (verb) and flinch* kind of reaction we physically have and then empathy becomes a factor when we choose how to respond. Telling them to stop, they're trying too hard or etc can be empathy. If we disregard the first reaction to make fun of them, then it's not empathy. If we disregard the first action to comfort them, it's sympathy rather than empathy.

    • @cheezuschrist588
      @cheezuschrist588 6 років тому +8

      The act of cringing is basically getting embarrassed on another person's behalf. I think it only applies to when they are trying to be impressive, since I don't think cringe is the right word to describe something like a person's nudes being leaked.

    Teachers singing about math or whatever will always be cringe because the intention is to get students interested and it's an attempt to connect with the kids, which it doesn't accomplish
    In fact, this is a less extreme example of the most classic example of cringe that dates all the way back to the 90's- out of touch adults rapping, which is the same basic principle but even more obvious

    Nah, see, cringe is when you see someone else in a situation and just get a burst of empathy where your experiences etc lead you to think you would be incredibly embarrassed in that situation. Your definition works for you, as imitating something but failing makes it clear to you that it should be embarrassing, and thus you get that sudden burst of cringe, but I get cringe from things that should be disqualified as they're not going for the imitation route as I would still be incredibly embarrassed to be in such a situation. For example, the first incredibly cringey bit in RWBY, for me, was immediately after the first action sequence, where Ruby is being a complete fangirl. This caused me cringe because "Oh fucking Christ can't you see how embarrassed you should be?", not because "Wow, you were pretending to be cool, but now you're not, how cringey.". It doesn't fall under imitation of being a badass, because after that fight scene, it's clear that Ruby does have the credentials to back up a badass attitude, and it's not an imitation of being a fangirl, as pretending to be such a thing when you're not generally falls under mockery. Basically, it's cringe because you would be incredibly embarrassed in such a situation, even if the person in the situation does not realise it.

    I think the best way to define cringe is simply taking yourself seriously, while appearing silly, ignorant, childish, foolish, etc. to others. And that's why what is and isn't cringe-inducing is subjective, because what we find silly, ignorant, etc. is subjective.

    Honestly, I rarely ever find cosplays cringey. To me, when they strike a pose (even if their costume isn't perfect), it's another example of how much they're into it and having fun. They get a chance to be a favorite character for a day, so they're just committed to that mindset, even if they aren't good at costume building.

    Great video! Never really thought about what causes cringe until now, good insight. Though, after watching the video. why'd you use the term "impressive" as opposed to "being taken seriously"? Sounds like it would fit better.
    Not everything cringe is failing to be "impressive" per say, but more like something taking itself seriously (even a joke) and failing at it. If it has ironic humor or self awareness then it isn't cringe due to the awfulness being the point, but when somethin is actually trying to present itself as one thing but fails, it's cringy.

    For me, what is considered cringy is when a character performs an action that would embarrass me if I attempted it. I know this is the case, because growing up, I had to watch TV on my own since whenever something cringy occured while I was around others, I had this strange idea that I would be ridiculed for the cringe taking place, as if I was the one performing the cringy act.

    This video was very insightful into something I never really understood. It followed a bunch of other terms coined only recently which flew over my head. And actually, as an artist aspiring to eventually make comics there's one really difficult term I've been having trouble with because it has some weird stigma or something to it, known as "Edge". I feel like there are more examples of edge and unspoken rules about it than concrete rules to define it that I never really understood it. Especially since the only definition I could find didn't hold up with everything I heard to be called-out as edge. And I find the feeling of "Edge is bad" to be very difficult to deal with when I don't understand its... everything.
    That context out of the way, I'd like to request a video about edge since you have a very insightful way of explaining and making point and arguments and if I feel confused about it, I imagine others could be too.

    I think another factor to cringe is the lack of social awareness someone needs to be accidentally make someone cringe.
    Cringe is bad enough when someone fails to imitate something then backs away accepting their defeat. However when someone fails at something and is oblivious to why they failed, or even worse the fact they failed in the first place acts as a cringe amplifier .

    This is an interesting take on cringe, and it touches on what psychologists discovered. Cringe has to do with empathy. It's feeling embarrassment for other people ("vicarious embarrassment"). This can happen when you think they're "trying too hard," or when they're not trying hard enough (for some people). For me, cringe happens when someone fails and people call them out on it (either by being an unreceptive audience, or they literally tell them to stop). Having that happen to me is embarrassing to me, so when I see it happen to someone else, I cringe on their behalf, because I think they're embarrassed, and I understand how it must feel.

      Uniquenameosaurus I saw another comment that pointed to a difference between functionally descriptive "cringe" and the petty insult which essentially means "I think you should be ashamed of yourself." The former believes the subject is simply naïvely unaware of themself and comes from a place of their own empathetic repose (I.e. actually themselves cringing) while the latter comes to it from a much more combative mindset, not necessarily experiencing that empathic wince, simply ridiculing the subject for doing something shameful.

  • @nerdvanguard3368

    I love your video. It made me feel like I can speak more eloquently about a topic that I only understood impulsively before.
    Overall I agree with your assessment, but I have a few specific things I want to mention.
    I think you really touched on something by mentioning perceived intent as fundamental to cringe. I think that presenting it in front of a live studio audience, in your example, is important to effectively intentionally conveying cringe simply because it removes the doubt of intention since so many other people have perceived the same thing. I think that other methods, such a presenting the laugh track plays on the Big Bang Theory are created for similar reasons such as enforcing how people should interpret the perceived intent behind various actions.
    I have a mild criticism of your word choices. I think that "imitation" actually goes a step too far in describing the phenomenon, and if it was replaced with "impression" or "image" whenever it occurs. I think that this would likely solidify the idea that "cringe" is when people latch onto a method of presentation that isn't appropriate for the context of their ideas. Although I completely agree that "cringe" usually occurs when people imitate a popular and well-known social construct that projects their idea. If this is a correct interpretation of your intent I mostly agree with your choice to use imitation, though I doubt many people's ability to perceive this without the correct mindset.
    If I might add an observation of my own:
    Interpreting something else as cringe may be a value judgment based in the interpreter's belief systems, social perceptions, expectations, and understanding of crafting an "image." Ironically this could mean that people who put more effort into doing well by conforming into a particular system (such as through your "challenge" example with cosplay) might be the ones who most notice that an action is cringe-worthy. In this way, cringe may assume that someone is working with the same values that you have and work towards the same objective, at which point cringe could be feeling that someone is directly acting against the status quo to an embarrassing degree.
    This also means that the best way to avoid undesirable cringe is to develop an understanding of expectations and symbols as much as possible and present an idea in a way that can be interpreted as clearly towards the intention as possible. However, this doesn't prevent cringe, as some may choose to take actions that others will interpret as cringey even with this understanding, much like those cosplayers who are just doing cosplay for self-expression.
    This might mean that "cringe" is more of an expression of how things do not fit in a status quo according to the beliefs of the perceiver. As an example, I'm sure that some people thought Avatar: The Last Airbender was cringey, because it was an anime not created in Japan. Many people have or had set definitions for anime being developed in Japan, and as such Avatar probably many people's beliefs. I'm sure the entire idea of the show was considered cringey American weeaboo trash by many and was dismissed off-hand because of that perception of social norms, despite the quality of the show and it's ideas.
    Put another way, I think that cringe can be defined as "a vehement feeling of embarrassment towards another based on their method of presenting ideas compared to one's own standards."
    I hope my try harding has helped develop your theories on cringe further.
    Thanks again for taking the time to make this video.

    Two of you explanations for why RWBY was cringe I disagree with. Other than that, good video. I agree with your definition of what cringe is. Just disagree with some of what makes RWBY cringe.
    1. I love Jaune. He's hilarious. One of my favorite characters. His failed attempts to court Weiss brightened my day. I didn't find them to be more or less cringe than they were purposefully intended to be.
    2. This is one I have to agree with, but only because comedy can be subjective. I am personally easy to please and found most jokes to be funny and the laughter to not be forced.
    3. Meh. I was able to forgive minor inconsisencies and many mistakes early on because I knew they had such a low budget. I also personally loved the chibi Ruby and sister dust cloud fight you showed as examples here. I thought they were cute.
    Honestly, for me a lot of what makes RWBY cringe is its writing. It... could use a bit of work lol

    RWBY looks like an anime license game from 2005. It's beyond me how people can watch something this ugly. It's really cheap looking and it having a Japanese dub for some reason doesn't make it any more watchable it only makes it so you recognize most of the voice actors. I'm guessing the only reason even Japan wanted something like this was because of the cute girls. They are in some cross over fighting game now together with Japanese IPs. So I guess there's that.

      Rin I love rwby for the story aspect. Some characters and certain fights but even I will admit the first three seasons looked god awful but 4 and 5 actually look very smooth and beautiful. Like certain cgi anime. You can’t deny it though. Rwby has still somehow got famous despite its bad looks the first few seasons.

      @@FixTheWi-Fi Kinda an old comment, but it's because the voice acting industry in Japan is incredibly bigger than the English one.

    Dude, you have no idea how interesting this video was. The concept of cringe is something I've been devoting a lot of thought to over the past year or so, mainly triggered by my introduction to cringe culture via Pewdiepie and other UA-camrs, and personally knowing a few people irl who I find cringey. It's really a fascinating topic.

    I've been following you since before that video and oh my god I'm so glad you finally figured it out, and with a theory that covers a lot of cringe as well. One thing I did want to bring up were moments of cringe that come from someone doing something and not realizing why what they're doing is wrong, such as someone trying to shake a blind person's hand or misunderstanding a game show question and losing money by missing the question. While the second can be chalked up to them trying to appear confident and missing the key parts of confidence (IE a reason to be confident), they both induce a feeling of really wishing you could stop the person and being unable to, which results in cringe. Do you think that compulsion to stop an awkward situation results in the cringe, or is there an underlying factor that groups these situations in with the ones you described ?
    (Edited for clarity)

    Tldw: What makes something cringe is a high ratio between someone's belief they are X and how X they actually are. ie: someone believing they are an intimidating badass when they are in fact an overweight teenager with a cheap katana they can't use.

    I always cringe at superheroe suits, and it perfectly fits your explanation. For example, the flash. They are trying too hard to make Barry look impressive with his suit, while to me the thing's just really really. And also the fact that nobody laughs when seeing him in that thing is silly. This perfectly fits what you said in this video

    I've dealt with a lot of cringe before (mostly in fanfics and OCs) and I'd just like to note that the person doesn't have to think they're doing a great job at it. A lot of the cringe I see comes from someone's lack of knowledge or effort into something. In that case the cringe doesn't come from the fact that the person think's they're impressive, in fact most of them will say they're just okay or even not the best at it. In those cases, the cringe comes either because the person thinks their terrible attempt is okay or simply because the person doesn't think their terrible attempt is cringe. It does tie in with what you're saying, but it's not as extreame.

      Not really mate. On a different note. When I happen to watch one of Pewdiepie's videos, he tends to gets alot of cringe..it says alot about him, doesn't it...oh well I'll look in to it another time..
      But this video about cringe seems about right. Have you seen the one that explains "creepy". That one is good. Most people don't know how to explain that feeling. If you haven't seen it let me know, I'll post a link to it. Oh and thank you to whoever happens to read all this. Here you go.🍦

    2:33 For me, I see the cringe as the other way around. The girl on the left's expression and pose are really impressive to me. While the guy on the right looks like he's not trying which appears pathetic and possibly 'cringe' to me.
    But I guess this goes with what you had said only a moment before when you expressed that you use to find some cosplay cringe but no longer do. Cringe can be subjective.

      I find neither cringey. But I find finding the guy on the right cringey, to be a bit cringey.
      He's chill and relaxed, and to be opposed to that or find it cringey gives me vibes of being too uptight and the sort to "try too hard", therefore it winds up cringey to me.

    *You know that time when people cringe over everything? Like. Literally everything.* Sometimes you can’t even express your feelings in a comment, as because people cringe over you. There are channel’s over there that are made to help you, and they tell you to express your feelings so they can help out. (Psych2Go for example). But some people cringe over your “hurt stories.” And other stuff. I really dislike how we cringe on everything. ✨😒✨

    • @Yipper64
      @Yipper64 6 років тому

      Conspiracy theories with tea no no no.... you see, what he was saying is that a lot of the time, 3D animation isnt that stylised, yeah proportions may be slightly different, they might put faces on things that dont usually have faces, etc, but they never look all that different, especially with how light bounces off surfaces, and how shading looks. RWBY with its 3D animation imitating 2D animation looks really unique comparatively... and it has a familiar touch too it, as a lot of 2D shows tend to use a big of 3D models if they need too.

    • @credfire8660
      @credfire8660 6 років тому +2

      Adam Eason the problem is rwby trying to look anime, if it tried to have it's own style it would look better, this is because the typical anime style was made for 2d, and since rwby tries to imitate that style it ends up looking like an mmd video (one with great editing). RWBY shouldn't try to imitate the style, because it ends up looking bad. And yes I know that rooster teeth doesn't want to spend money on making 2d animation frame-by-frame.
