If there was a site like that, it would cost as much as several existing sites combined. And monopolies aren't known for being cheap, innovative, or consumer-friendly. If pirates are whining about paying multiple sites because they expect to get everything for the price of a CR subscription, they're not going to pay more for a site that has "every show."
Besides, neither Netflix, Hulu, nor Amazon has every US movie and TV show ever made, yet people still pay for one or more of those sites. I'd say part of the problem lies with the anime viewerbase's culture of entitlement and unrealistic expectations.

Here's another reason why piracy wins over legal streaming. SOMETIMES, OLD SHOWS ARE REMASTERED IN 1080P. In 2020, El Hazard was remastered for bluray. Is there any way to watch that version legally? Only if I bought the expensive Japanese Blu Rays, then downloaded subtitle files, ripped the blu rays, and did a crapload of muxing work. Imagine if Crunchyroll did an ad saying, "whenever a blu ray remaster of a dvd quality show we have is released, we will update our dvd quality videos with the blu ray quality video." That would at least be something.

    • @randominternetguy3537
      @randominternetguy3537 3 роки тому +2

That's illegal. They'd have to pay the company that remastered it, pay someone to sub it (or do what you said, use the existing subtitle file) and pay someone to look for remasters, or pay someone to make an ai that looks for remasters automatically. Either way, its a mega loss to them, for not a lot of potential.
For a good feature, it needs to be cheap to implement and provide clear potential. The problem is that these companies are horrible at recognizing the potential and hella low ball it. They dont see the value in "qol" features.

      @@WhayYay
Over the past 15+ years, American-based anime import company FUNimation has had a series of incidents in which individuals working on the dubs of their various shows have altered the dialogue in individual episodes to include references to then-current sociopolitical matters within the United States. Shows known to have been affected by this include “Crayon Shin-Chan”, “Prison School”, “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid”, and “My Girlfriend is a Gal”.
This alone has been enough to upset not just anime fans the world over, but even reportedly some Japanese studios, as it brings controversy to shows that didn’t originally have that specific controversy going.
However, it’s not the only issue FUNimation is dealing with right now.
FUNimation paid a high price for the license to the series “Interspecies Reviewers”, a price they paid sight unseen. Because of this, it wasn’t until they were dubbing the first episode that they realized it was incredibly raunchy, at which point the voice actors balked at continuing. FUNimation halted production, only to sit on the license for several months thereafter. While people were waiting for FUNimation to figure out what they were going to do (they eventually sold the license to Nozomi Entertainment, which has a division that handles “adult” material), individuals employed by FUNimation took to social media to lecture everyone about how “if you can’t get it legally then you don’t need to have it” in response to people demanding that the series at least be subtitled.
FUNimation also botched the home video release of at least one recent “Dragonball Z” movie, such that the US release had a green tint to it that the theatrical screening and non-US releases didn’t have.
Several FUNimation employees - including top voice actors - have used their social media accounts to express controversial political sentiment, with many of these individuals getting into fights with fans and critics alike over them.
One of FUNimation’s top voice actors, Vic Mignogna, was hit with numerous allegations of improper sexual behavior right after the aforementioned Dragonball Z movie was released, a film where he had a major starring role. Some of these allegations fell apart instantly, but the fact that allegations were even made enough for FUNimation to fire him after what was essentially a kangaroo court. Mignogna has since gone through several rounds of legal action against a number of his co-workers and others in an effort to try and clear his name.
…Meanwhile, several individuals who had accused Mignogna were themselves outed as predators and criminals, such as one individual who was caught soliciting minors and another individual who had a criminal record for assaulting their ex-wife.
…And if that wasn’t bad enough, a series of audio recordings, images, and video recordings have surfaced indicating that contrary to the moral purity many of Mignogna’s accusers - and others at FUNimation - proclaimed in public they themselves often engaged in unprofessional and even lewd behavior on a regular basis, including a raunchy parody of one of the shows they have the license for.
Put it all together, and those people who know about FUNimation’s assorted scandals and incidents do not trust them anymore, and do not want to support a company that allows its employees to behave in such a fashion as has since been exposed. It’s to the point now that whenever FUNimation announces another license there’s a surge in traffic on pirate websites to get that show in its raw Japanese format. There is also reason to believe that their actions are on the minds of many Japanese studios and media companies, and that it’s part of why there has been a push to find new ways for these companies to deliver content directly to foreign audiences.

    reasons why I pirate
    a: free shit is fun
b: the best release of a show will always be the pirated version, subtitles will be better, encode will be better. many times the blu rays & streaming sites will have visual issues, and more experienced encoders will fix the source issue using filters. the typesetting in legal anime is abysmal compared to what some fansubbers can do.

True. If each service can provide what you paying for specifically than you'll buy it. Funimation used to be the go to for dubbed fans and was worth the money until they where barred from having many of the seasonal shows that their service was 'advertised' to be providing ( dubbed anime ). You brought it cos it was more convenient and safe now you avoid it because it's no longer providing the value you place on it.

Why most people outside of the US don't have a Crunchyroll Account? Because we don't even get 10% of the Content that people in the US get. Here in Germany for example we have no One Piece, no Dragonball, only half of the Naruto Episodes available. So people go to illegal sites. I use a VPN to get all the content but legally that's also a grey area and most people don't know what a VPN is.

Nina Felwitch its starting to look like it’s happening here in the US too, after Crunchyroll and Funimation teamed up almost all of the other streaming services completely dropped most of the anime that Funimation dubs, Netflix is the best example. Crunchyroll and Funimation have raised their prices in the last year or so because of their “exclusive content” and Netflix has been dropping tv shows nonstop that aren’t exclusive and raising prices, despite the fact that the majority of their customers only use their services to binge watch tv shows.

@@devilscreation572 Plenty of anime is also censored. But we're not talking about the crotch mosaics you see in hentai. We're talking bout the sunbeams/shadows/steam/whatever that gets done on "normal" anime. There's a lot of hot springs and showers and other such fanservice scenes where the girls are topless in a non-sexual context (at least as far as the story line is concerned!) That kind of stuff tends to get censored (even in Japan) for the TV release -- which is what CR and other sites tend to use as their source material -- but the Bluray edition has the censorship removed (depending on the quality of the show, sometimes that's the main selling point of the Bluray..)
      .
That wouldn't even really be _that_ big of a deal if it was done well. But they tend to do it with an overly heavy hand and it starts looking very awkward and out of place. It becomes very noticeable after you've seen a couple of shows in both the censored and uncensored formats.
      .
It would be like if HBO decided to re-film a "safe" version of Game of Thrones where the actresses all wear modern day lingerie in the sex scenes. You might not notice at first but once you realize how out of place it is in the setting, suddenly it would be all you can see when one of those scenes come on.

One small nit pick; a lot of the arguments for "supporting the industry" were referring to the anime industry, not the streaming one.
It's the studios that make the anime that needed the money because for a long time their ability to make money was incredibly poor unless it's a huge name like Miyazaki or Mad House.
But you're absolutely correct about the rest of the video, streaming services can and should do better.

Easy features I want from Crunchyroll:
    No censorship
    No censorship
    Buffer bar
    No censorship
Wider variety of shows constantly being updated
    Featured partnered content creators
    No censorship
Show recommendations based on how long you have been watching on the site (I.e. Veterans get veteran shows, newbies get newbie shows), interests, and MAL rankings
Recommended merch on each show page
    And of course, no censorship.

In order to air the show on the same day it airs in Japan, they need to use the TV edit, which is heavily censored due to Japanese law.

The censorship is due to them getting broadcast versions of the show which have to be censored in certain depending on when it airs by Japanese law. Also if there is an uncensored version that excise it’s usually an exclusive deal with a cable channel in Japan.

Whoa thanks for the shout out bud. Much appreciated and great vid!
I think I laughed more in this than I should've. And I guess I should add my two cents.
So ya. Everything you said I pretty much agree with. People say 'support the industry' but the industry's already been supported by the big corporations paying them big bucks for those exclusive licenses that are indeed hindering the streaming experience. I know some people will say we dont know that for sure without any financial statements or concrete data in your face stating exactly how much the industry has been paid. But take the subtle hints. Digibro just made a vid about how there's too much anime. Thats because the market has grown. You know why the market has grown, because demand has increased. And one of the most basic rules of economics is the laws of supply and demand. If the demand for a product or service goes up, the supply increases in order to keep up with demand. So you saw netflix saying 30 anime titles for next year, thats one platform out of three major ones that are throwing money at the industry to try to corner the market on anime streaming. As you said in the video and the only opinion I tried to convey in mine, was supporting a company or corporation that provides a poor services on the basis that 'it's right' is an easy way to encourage poor business practices and business models in the only market that can legally provide the medium we love.
K its 4 AM, and I work tmrw so I dont really have time to edit this right now. Thanks again though.

Since you seem to know stuff like this, do you know if legal streaming actually has a moral argument?
IIRC I've heard that most studios earn they money either through dvd-sales or merch, so if you want to support the creators, shouldn't you rather watch fan-subs illegally, then buy dvds or merch as more of that money might go to the creators?

    • @HxH2011DRA

Ah I remember seeing your video. It was very good!

    • @LhymeLife
      @LhymeLife 6 років тому +24

+ITR The thing with physical media (DVDs and such) is that none of the money goes to the creators upon purchasing the item.
I'll be using "StoreMart" as an example store front.
So you see a DVD in your local StoreMart or on StoreMart.com that means that the company (StoreMart) has already purchased some number of DVDs from a distributor, who in turn purchased the rights to distribute the DVD from the Licensor who purchased the the rights to license the DVD from the studio who created the product (or their parent company in most cases).
By the time it comes to you the consumer to purchase the product the creators have already been payed in full and the bill is sitting on the store front. They do not send the creators a check every time they sell a copy of the DVD, that money goes all to them.
What you are trying to do is:
      A) Get the storefront to purchase more copies of the DVD. More copies being purchased on the retail end means more money going to the creators overall.
      B) Convince the store front that products from the company are a good investment. If the DVD you buy sells a lot of other copies the store front will purchase more of the next DVD in the series hoping the trend will continue.

    Things Crunchyroll can do:
    1. Get a fucking video player that isn't dogshit
    2. Subtitles on dubs
    3. Add the entire anime, not just a couple seasons (I pirated One Punch Man Season 2 because Crunchyroll doesn't have it for whatever reason)
    4. Better servers so they don't implode whenever a new episode of a really popular anime comes out

    • @Zalis116
      @Zalis116 2 роки тому

Illegal sites already have non-dogshit video players, all seasons of any given anime (since they don't have to pay for licensing rights), and adequate servers. That doesn't change the "why should I pay for what I can get for free?" calculus.
And pirates don't seem to actually care about "subtitles on dubs," since illegal sites not only don't have closed-captioning/dialogue subtitles for dubs, they often omit the signs/songs subtitles that legitimate dubs on legal services and DVD/Blu-Ray _do_ contain.

    • @INTERNAL_REVENUE_SERVICE

Exclusive licenses really should go away. I mean if every streaming platform could get every series, then it really would be competition of whose site is better. The Japanese companies who sell the licenses would also get money from more streaming sites, not just the one that is willing to buy the license and fans wouldn't have to buy several subscriptions if their favourite anime isn't on the site they subscribed to. No, we could actually base our decision on which site is better for us.
I don't know if it's a good comparison, but I'm more in the favour of buying the anime on disks, because it doesn't matter which publisher gets the rights, because I can play the DVDs on my DVD player anyway. The funny thing is, anime isn't published in my country at all, so I have to tell family members who happen to travel to a country (in my case Germany) that has anime on DVD and they can buy them for me. So not only aren't they in my native language, not only do I have to rely on others to buy them for me, prizes aren't even accurate because we don't use the same currency as the country I'm buying them from so I'm sure I actually pay more then if I'd live in that country. And I still try to get my favourite series on DVD. So I do want to support the official releases and the creators, but it's pretty hard and all of the series tha tI've bought, I checked out on illegal sites first, so they are also a nice way to advertise series.
So yeah, exclusive licenses should die, legal sites should all offer every anime and work on making the sites better and the Japanese companies should work on getting anime into smaller countries as well. I don't see how else this problem can be solved...
Also the heads of the Japanese companies should pay the animators better. I always hear about how they don't get enough payment and stuff like that. This job shouldn't just be done out of passion, they should be able to love from it as well...

    • @Zalis116
      @Zalis116 3 роки тому

No legal site can ever get "every series," even if exclusivity goes away. A lot of older anime are in situations where the video masters are lost/damaged, or the ownership rights are unknown/disputed, and many are just too obscure/unappealing to draw enough views to be profitable. Any legal site that tried to pursue something approaching "every anime" would have to charge more (i.e. an amount greater than one current subscription, which this series would consider "anti-consumer") than they currently do, so that revenue from new/popular series cover the losses from older/money-losing titles. There's no guarantee that Japanese companies would get more money, since distributors aren't going to pay as much for non-exclusive licenses as they would for exclusives -- exclusive licensing comes with bidding wars that increase the amount of money flowing back to Japan. Japanese companies could wind up doing more work (negotiating contracts, approving translations, transferring materials on a weekly basis) for less money if they're dealing with 5 different distributors instead of 1. And even if every service _could_ get every anime, that doesn't mean every service _would_ get every anime, so the cost of getting everything legally could be higher in a non-exclusive regime than it is now.
So even in the absence of exclusivity, the amoral "consumers" that this video cultivates will still decide, "This bootleg site that gives me every anime for free is better for me than any legal site that charges money / makes me watch ads and doesn't have every anime." There is no magical service feature that legal sites can implement, but illegal sites cannot. Even if there were, it wouldn't make that much difference, as most so-called consumers would pick "service 75% as good with a better selection for 0% of the cost" every time.
I know some actual consumers discover anime via illegal means and go on to buy it legitimately, but we saw how an "everyone watches for free, then buys the discs if they really like the series" system worked out in the U.S. in the late 2000s -- it led to a collapse. Piracy became more widespread as illegal streaming on YT became common, anime's online buzz/hype expanded, and convention attendance skyrocketed. But all that additional popularity didn't translate to profitability -- sales plummeted, companies went out of business (turns out "rough times" don't necessarily spur miraculous innovation), and there was a negative effect in the amount of anime produced in Japan, thanks to less licensing money being in the system.
True, animators should be paid better, but they're not going to win any concessions if the industry can barely keep the lights on.

Bootleg streaming sites only get anime subbed within 24 hours of the Japanese release because they're re-encoding rips of legal streams. Yes, some sites like Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu are moving into the anime scene from outside, but CR, Funimation, and Hidive (an ADV/Sentai spinoff) have been anime-focused companies since their inception. If you're dissatisfied with North American companies providing insufficient service in your country, then maybe some company that's actually _in_ your country needs to pick up those licenses, assuming there's a viable paying audience present.

The thing that bugs me the most is that you have to pay to support the corporate privatization of anime translation rather than support the creators themselves. The "industry" of licensed anime providers was never needed and they just try to make money that benefits them rather than support the content itself. Some of the money goes into the Japanese content creators pockets, but the vast majority goes to supporting a terrible system that goes against fans. When they notice that fans like a product that is being translated they give the Cease and Desist letter to the Translators, that are usually not receiving any money, and give a inferior translation that comes out much later when your interest in a series has waned. YenPress and Cruchyroll are both very guilty of this. If they want my traffic they need a better business model. My personal recommendation for companies would be to have online translators work with a business in an easily accessible manner that is not overpriced. They would never do that though since their current model is giving them a profit.
TLDR; The "industry" doesn't deserve a dime. I love capitalism, but when I have a better alternative to your crap I will go with that. The moral argument isn't really moral unless there exists better competition.

      Pirated sites:
      - free: Meaning that the creators get no money when you watch it there
      - get's all anime subbed withing 24h after japanese release: Because they either steal it from crunchyroll or someone does it in their free time.
      - advertisements: Yeah those horrible rabbithole clickbait ads the consume all of your bandwidth and ram which makes your watching experience horrible without an adblock.
      - run by people who loved anime since years: True with torrenting but not true with streaming sites. Free anime streaming sites only care about ad money hence all the ads and they care far far less about you than anyone at crunchyroll. Hell they barley have any server cost because most of the videos a streamed through different sources.
      - aviable in all countries- mostly true.
      Paid sites:
      - you pay: The creators get money yay
-- there is a delay in subbing or flat out the whole anime is released at once after the season is done: It takes time to sub something and you know that.
      - run by companies who did something else and now plan to milk the money out of anime- yeah basically like free streaming sites except these sites actually give money to the anime industry
      - not aviable in my country- you can use a vpn but it will take a lot of bandwidth

And this applies to ALL entertainment media involving exclusive licensing, now more than ever. With the entirety of the movie and TV industry sliced up like it is, there is no way for someone to access the content they want, without subscribing to several services. I'd really like to see a broader video on that, because its a fucking disaster. Platforms literally only differ in terms of what shows they have, not how high the quality of service is. The content is not the service, and so to compete using the content not the service, is not just wrong, its more, way more than wrong. As it stands now, the only thing standing in front of EVERYONE in the visual media space making an absolute killing, is the market being split up like it is. If every platform, from Netflix to Amazon, from Crunchyroll to Anime Strike or what the hell ever the current equivalent was, carried ALL the content appropriate to that platform, and the only choice was where to watch it, EVERY show would get more views and if the licenses were worked out properly, not exclusively, then every view would result in financial gain for the studios, actors, voice actors, special effects artists, illustrators, directors and everyone else involved in actually making the shows we want to watch, because there would be a greater number of eyeballs with access to the content in question. Its a no brainer, a win win. With things as they are, platforms limit the access to the content they purchase control over, limiting how successful each IP can be while under their ownership or licensed control, and that is demonstrably bad for those IPs and the potential viewers. How do I know? If I could watch The Boys on the platform I am actually subscribed to, I would. I can't, so I won't. If I could watch The Mandalorian on a service I am already subscribed to, I would. It isn't, so I won't. The same thing applies to anime content. If the creators want bums in seats and eyes glued to screens, they need to stop handing out exclusive licenses to distributors, and only offer non exclusive agreements to prospective distributors, it really is that simple.

As someone who started watching anime back when "fansub" meant a bootleg VHS with yellow translation text, I think it's funny that people seem to have forgotten how expensive and unavailable anime used to be. The reality is that in the 90's and for a part the 00's certain anime were just totally unavailable unless you pirated. This was also during a time when actual licensed anime was released overseas at insane costs (anyone who disagrees should be pointed to the MSRP $200 Trigun box set from 2001 that I own).
What's happened to anime is pretty similar to what happened to the music industry. Years of overcharging the consumer have backfired as a result of instant availability.

umm, but in One Piece case, it is quantity over quality. Old One Piece was fine but as it progressed the pacing became worse and then time skip the animation and art got worse. Literally, those 97episodes could be condensed to 40-60 episodes and make no difference. Past one piece at least 1st arc was 2 chapters per episode but they stop that long time ago. You rather buy the box set for one piece that cost about 150-160 Aud in bookdespoitory while covering two huge arcs East Blue and Alabasta that contains 23volumes. Also with that 200 dollars, only 1 big arc is cover and some small arcs. I think the jojo is a good example on how to do it, you have a complete story by buying it in a reasonable price plus the blue ray improves the art and animation of the actual content.
