  • Hi Photographers!
    In todays episode: few thoughts about the recently released 24 1.7 DX lens from Nikon. Is it decent enough to get one? Hear me out.
    Cheers from Poland!

    Did you have the chance to shoot with Nikkor 24 1.7? What is you experience?

      I got it and paired it with the z30. Great combo!

    I went with the 24 1.7 and no regrets...light, sharp, quick focus and the bokeh is amazing! 35 mm POV is so handy.

      Agreed! 35mm fov is great📷

      How is it 35mm?
      Are you putting it on a full frame?
      A dx lens on a dx body would produce to advertised pov of 24mm

      All lens focal lengths are measured in full frame terms as in 35mm film which is the size of a full frame sensor. So...a DX lens used on a DX sensor which is a 1.5 crop factor from full frame (for Nikon cameras) produces a field of view in the case of a 24 1.7 DX lens will be 36mm. Another example is if you use the 24mm 1.7 DX lens on a full frame sensor camera, the camera will crop down to DX crop mode and will produce a 36mm point of view. Another explanation would be if you used a 24mm full frame lens on a full frame camera, the FOV would be 24mm. The same 24mm full frame lens on a crop camera will produce a FOV of 36mm. because the crop sensor camera can only use the center of the lens. @@MikeVideos327

      @@MikeVideos327 No, catually the DX/APS-C focal lenghts give you a 1.5 ratio as compared to Full Frame. So 24mm DX lens in this case gives you a ~36mm FF equivalent FOV.

    Very nice channel. I have a Z30 with a 16-50 3.5 lens and I would like to switch to this 1.7 because I see that I have noise in the house when taking pictures. Do you think it makes a difference?Thank you

    If you're like me and you like to customize or decorate your gear, you can get a skin/wrap for the Nikkor 24mm (and others). There are all kinds of textures and colors, I think I want a gunmetal or sliver wrap for my Gray ZFC. Instant sexyness! 😅

    Beautiful "film" colors on your photos. You did it manual, or used some preset?

    Aloha! Thanks for reviewing this lens. As a Fujifilm X100/S/T shooter and with the shortage (and overpriced used) X100 versions, I am on the search for an "alternative." With the introduction of this lens, I thought it would be a great alternative paired with the Zfc, Yes, I agree that it would of been great if it was designed like their SE line, but I can live with the more modern look. My only concern is the image quality either wide open or close to it, since you didn't have glowing praise at those apertures? Any further thoughts? Would of been great to see close in 1:1 images. Mahalo for your content and for any comments. Kind regards, Thomas

      Hi Thomas! Thank you for your feedback. Glad you like the review. Same case here - I got the Zfc because the lack/sky high prices of X100V. As for the IQ - I think I expect to much from this lens wide open, mostly because of the comparisons I made with my Ricoh photos(but yeah, Ricoh is tack sharp wide open because it is 2.8). Feel free to contact me via email(its in my profile) - I can send you some wide open RAW and JPGs made with Zfc + 24 1.7 so you can have a look and judge yourself. Cheers!

      @@DigitalRetro Aloha Rav! Sorry for the delayed reply. Much appreciate the personal reply and your offer to share image files taken with the Zfc & 24mm combo. I don't normally pixel peek or am very critical of sharpness, but was just wondering how it compares to the Fuji X100 series, although I think only the "current" X100V has corrected for the less than stellar optical performance of the original X100 lens. Since I have only used the X100T as the most current iteration, my expectations won't be super high (hope that made sense?) I also have a Ricoh GR, but unfortunately the lens is "stuck" in the extended position. I still prefer Fuji files to the Ricoh, so I haven't bothered to find a fix or send it in for repair, but I agree it's a very sharp lens. Still undecided on the Zfc and I would probably just get it with the kit lens at first and then get the 24mm later? Mahalo again for the reply and offer. Take care, Thomas

      @@kauaiphotography Hello again Thomas! I did shoot with X100F and much preferred it as well vs Ricoh! It`s just the Fuji magic I guess. As for the Zfc with 23mm - it`s still very cool combo that I pretty much like more now than my GRIIIx - it`s the experience you get from this camera: the looks, the shutter sound, nice EVF...and you get the pretty good video performance which you can`t get from the GR or even X100 series(i know this may not be a dealbraker, but I think it`s nice to be able to use your camera for casual, quality video, too!). Do I suggest getting Zfc with kit lens? Not really - I`d get the Black Edition Zfc body and 24 1.7 straight away ;) Cheers, Rav~

      @@DigitalRetro Aloha Rav! I just don't care for the colors coming out of the GR and I also need a viewfinder to compose my images. I'll use the LCD if I need a low or high angle, but I can better analyze the scene looking through a viewfinder. I hate to admit, but I rarely shoot any video, so I don't pay too much attention to the video specs. I actually used the original X100 and X100S for many years and the limitation of having a fixed lens wasn't much of a problem, but now that I am using a XT-10 and the kit 18-55mm, I am liking the versatility in changing the perspective when I can and a short zoom when I can't get close enough with my feet. I also have the pancake 27mm, but prefer something a bit wider. Thanks for the suggestions. Thought it would be nice to get the zoom as a kit because of the lower price and I don't even see the all black edition of the Zfc for sale? Mahalo once again, Thomas

    Still wondering if I should get this lens or the viltrox 23mm 1.4. That close focusing distance is making me go towards this one though.

    • @DigitalRetro
      @DigitalRetro  9 місяців тому +1

      It is a hard choice. I had Viltrox 23 1.4. The IQ is great from wide open and rendering is unique, bokeh is much more vintage and „artsy” but the 24 1.7 wins with compact size and close focus. The viltrox is just too bulky for smaller mirrorless like z30 or Zfc. But if you don’t mind the size and close focusing go for the Viltrox. Otherwise 24 1.7 is great for everyday use.

      @@DigitalRetro thanks! I tend to go to shoot a lot of close distance so probably the 24. But the 1.4.... Lol

      @@DigitalRetro cześć, bardzo lubię Twoje filmy i podejście do fotografii ! w kwestii "23mm" pod Z APS-C: kupiłem żonie 23 i 33 viltroxa, są to świetne szkła, szczególnie 33; bez osłony p-słonecznej 23 to nie jest duży obiektyw. Widziałem zdjęcia przykładowe z tej 24/1,7 i coś mnie zniechęca w tym obiektywie, poza tym f2,1 FF vs 2,6 na mid-dystansie to odczuwalna różnica w obrazowaniu tła. Mam dwie Z30 bo zachwyca mnie prostota, lekkość i jednocześnie jakość wykonania tego korpusu, ma grip i żadnych zbędnych pokręteł zbierających kurz i zaczepiających się o Bóg-wie-co w terenie. Sam używam na nim praktycznie wyłącznie Kamlana 28mm. Zaliczył już kilka gór i innych wyjazdów. Opcją bezkompromisową będzie Viltrox 27, ale to potężny słój i w zasadzie to, po co kupujemy APS-C przestaje się wtedy liczyć. Mam nadzieję, że pod Z-tkę Vojtek zrobi 27/1,2 a nie wyłącznie kopię 27/2, bo wprawdzie wydaje się, że to obiektyw marzeń pod cropa, ale ma niestety słabe rozmycie i nie chodzi o jego "ilość" (f/3 FF), ale jakość : ( Z manuali świetną opcją w zakresie 35-40mm FF jest Laowa 25 CF APO, ale to znowu słoik i bez AF.

    Get the 26mm, sharp wide open at 2.8

    • @timom.6745
      @timom.6745 6 місяців тому +1

      Have both, the 26mm has more contrast, micro-contrast and saturation in the colours (with exactly the same camera settings at f/2.8).It is about the same weight but it is little bit smaller. So all in all the better lens between f/2.8 and f/11, even though not by a huge margin. But the 26mm loses against the 24mm DX at every aperture bigger than f/2.8, obviously. That is why I am still considering keeping both.
