    Hey Everyone !
    What do you think about this little DX Prime...
    iv not spent a lot of time with it but I like what I see so far
    certainly worth looking at especially for those of you that are primary DX users out there.
    as always thank you so much for watching getting closer to that 50K now 😍

      I think it's a welcome addition to the DX family of Z lenses. I've had the new DX 12-28 PZ lens for several days now and I'm enjoying shooting with it on my Z fc. Because of that I don't think I'll invest in this new 24mm lens, but I do hope to see more DX lenses coming from Nikon!

      Nice to finally see the 24mm DX lens out, seems like a good overall lens.
      I would have considered purchasing it but did purchase the 40mm F2 for my Z30 not too long ago mainly to be able to get better shots when lightning is not as good.

    So happy that Nikon decided to release this lens. I know that DX (crop-sensor) cameras aren't really a major focus for the likes of Nikon and Canon, but I think a DX lens here and there would do well to help Z30, Z50, and Zfc buyers feel like they didn't waste their money.

      Indeed it adds a lot of versatility along with the zooms. Low light while staying compact, close-up stuff (in the all important particular foodies here in Asia) with shallow DoF, people's images with shallow DoF. Great addition, will pair mine with the 50mm 2.8 MC on the z30, real nice two-primes setup, compact and capable.
      Yes, I would prefer 28mm equivalent, that's my preferred focal length, but guess I will survive with a 36mm equivalent...

      I don’t feel like I wasted my money; I just got the Z50, 40/2, 50/1.8S and that 40 is wonderful. 50 is kinda big and heavy for my liking, I may return it and get the 26 or 28. Personally I would rather buy the FF Z mount lenses

    As usual I really enjoy your equipment reviews, thank you Ricci. I think the 24mm f1.7 will be very welcomed for DX users. Can I ask do you know why Nikon removed a very useful feature "Peaking Stack Image" from Focus Shift Shooting on the Z6ii and Z7ii please? I have the Z6 and Z7, I find this function very useful in the field to be able to check you image for sharpness knowing that you have what you want. I would like Nikon to re-instate it on the Z6ii & Z7ii through a firmware update.

    I own a Z50 and a Z6II and I use the Z50 as my every day carry camera. I will be looking at this possibly as one to get for the Z50. Wish they would do either a 16 or 18mm for a 20-24mm wide angle effect. But I am curious how it will preform at night. Not real wide for astro but you could still get some astrophotography done with it. Glad to see Nikon getting more lenses to their dx lineup now!

    Thanks for this review - I have literally just received the Nikon 1.7 24mm and intend to use it for street and lowlight on a Z30 which is a super portable combo.
    The only thing I am not sure of is the lens hood - as a matter of course I always fit a UV filter to my lenses for protection. looks to me as if I can only fit this filter to the lens hood if I intend using it - the alternative being fitting it to the lens and forgetting the hood.

  • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
    @ThePhotographyHobbyist Рік тому +15

    So far, I've never seen a bad (poor performing, optically) Z mount lens (and I've had plenty). I'm sure this one will be the same as far as the images you get. Even the little 16-50 gives you great images. People may whine about a plastic lens mount, but come on...the lens weighs nothing. Unless you routinely drop your camera and like to bang the lens against solid objects, there's no reason at all why a good quality plastic mount on a featherweight lens like this would be a 'problem'. The only problem is in people's minds. They should concentrate more on making photos rather than crying about plastic mounts on an inexpensive lens (that still has great optical quality...and weather sealing).

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews Рік тому +1

      I think the problem is Canon are releasing primes at similar price with metal mounts and a switch on the barrel. It just makes you look cheap by not doing those things.
      Plastic is alright say sub 200 price, even then the 35mm 1.8 G lens (very popular DX lens hugely popular), is under 200 and has a metal mount.
      If you're paying more and get less, it's fair game to point that out. Plastic is only acceptable IMO for the cheapest kit lenses

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist Рік тому +2

      @@MrBazReviews I'll take more rather than less any day (if it's included). I understand what you mean, but I also also challenge people to compare the optical quality of the cheaper Nikon Z mount lenses like this to cheap Canon lenses. Until you've used them, you don't realize how much of an improvement they are (Z mount lenses) over the F mount lenses or even modern mirrorless lenses from Fuji, Sony, Olympus and Panasonic (I've owned all those brands). So, I personally would take the better performance for what matters (making nice images) vs a metal mount that doesn't help me and a button I'd probably never use on the side of the lens, but everyone has their own preferences.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews Рік тому

      @@ThePhotographyHobbyist I'm not sure you get what I'm saying. I'm purely talking about cost cutting measures (and this applies to many makers not just Nikon)
      All makers have good/weak lenses, no doubts about it. I'm mostly referencing the RF 28mm 2.8, which does have a metal mount, does have a switch on the side (and the MTF also looks good but no I've not used it or seen images from it)
      It's too vague to talk about how much better Z mount lenses are, because many F mount ones are much older. It has more to do with newer designs, than it does a new mount. For example the 70-200mm 2.8 E is a great lens, and so is the new S Z mount, but I'd be pressed to say the new one was far better. The F mount a later design so it's much closer. Still you get a real lens case with the F Mount one, and a cloth wrap with the Z mount (again more cost cutting)
      I'll go further still, there is more to any lens then pure sharpness. To me the look is critical, if I find a super sharp lens with a bad rendering or poor look (bar a wide angle lens), I'll scrub it off the interest list. There are plenty of good lenses on all mounts and some like the older ones. Photography is far far more than sharpness alone.

      I still think hooked on photography is right overall as the dx buyers are always looking at cost and wait, from a newbe prospective, I'd say quality is a given be it cannon nikon etc.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews Рік тому

      @@daveyboy6210 Most buyers are not even going to look at APS-C, and only Fuji take that format seriously (and look at their prices)
      Crop has had it's day, and Nikon's Z line up is so weak it's not even worth considering. Head straight for full frame.
      Once someone gets more experience, they're not interested in just sharpness, it's the "look" that counts
      Some are excited by the next best thing (some even pretend to talk about good enough yet don't follow it)

Maybe even the 24f4 of the 24-120F4S as a prime with those nice sun stars. Then pair it with a 60F4S macro. I wasn't crazy about the 50MC as a general purpose prime.

    I wonder why Nikon did not introduce an additional SE variant. The 28mm SE and 40mm SE are a perfect match for the Nikon Z FC.

Pride of ownership, a lens that’ll last forever, while Nikon continues to treat DX users like beginners with plastic mounts, something you won’t even find on third party lenses. With every plastic lens Nikon releases I’m getting more and more sorry that I invested in a Z50 system.

    I'm really glad to see Nikon coming out with these types of lenses, especially since on the Zfc this would make a perfect street combo (at 36mm equivalent). The sad reality though is that people shouldn't get comfortable with the DX releases as there may not be as many as there were for the F-mount, and this does make sense. But this is a welcome addition to the family and it might be what makes me get a Zfc after all (I was never really a fan of the 39-42mm equivalents when using the 26 and 28mm pancakes for FF, but this (also being a native DX lens) may be the ticket, as I've grown to like the 35mm focal length for street and casual shooting with a prime (50mm equivalent is fine, but sometimes its too narrow). That being said, though, Nikon SHOULD also do a 35mm DX lens just to at least have a few fast primes for the DX crowd (I know that Sigma is supposed to fill some of that role, and they have with some of the others) but I think if we could also get a 35mm DX, the DX Crowd should be pretty satisfied (aside from also needing a "D500" replacement but in mirrorless form and maybe an ultra wide like a 10-20 or an 8-16 as 12mm is not exactly super wide on DX).
    I do have to say that the comparison at 0:39 surprised me a little as I thought the 24mm DX was shorter than the others (at least this is the impression that is given in photos I've seen so far, looks more compact than it actually is it seems) but still it's not bad, just surprised it's taller and about the same size (diameter) as the 28mm. But the price is good on it regardless...
    For those who don't like the plastic mount, it's not huge and it's not heavy. And unless you go around banging your lenses around on things, a plastic mount can be just as durable (if it was a 70-300 or something longer, then I could understand). On the other hand, if you are going around banging your lenses into things, then we may have bigger problems than just having a plastic mount.
    (on a side note, I guess now we can simply say: "Z5 to Z9" since we now have a camera for all gaps from 5 to 9, whereas before we had to sort of spell it out so to speak).

    Now that Canon has come back into the cropped-sensor market with so many new models (R7, R10, R50, R100), can we expect new cameras from NIkon in this format? Canon easily has the AF advantage at the moment. I've been using the full-frame 28mm f2.8 lens on my Z50 and enjoying it, but the new lens is clearly the one to go for.

    At the end of the video you show a shot of focus breathing, but without commentary. I’m a bit confused as to what it means? Does it mean that if you just let it sit there it will go in and out of focus like that slot? That would be a bad thing I’d think? How does that compare to the other lenses?

    • @wakeywarrior

      It’s going from out of focus to locked in focus. Focus breathing means when it locks on focus, you can see the background of the image pulse in and out of focus slightly as it locks on. This doesn’t have any and looks very good in that regard.

They are so freaking close in focal length. It makes no sense. So many of us who bought a Z fc just wanted a fast DX prime to begin with. THE MOST anticipated Nikon lens is the 200-600. I KNOW of 10 photo people using a SONY 200-600 on Nikon Z cameras with quite a bit of mods to achieve that. I use the 200-600 Sony on my families A 1 . They think my Nikon Z 9 and now Z 9 are better. PROBLEM: They are trying it with certain situations that my high end Z lens can handle. BUT the REAL DEAL is that in the field I have MANY times realized I suddenly needed a very different focal length, ZOOMS rule in the real world. Ive been in Alaska, Yellowstone, etc. and had guys who shoot a lot in the field say their 200-500 F 5.6 was BETTER than their $10.000 to $20,000 rigs as it is more suited to being able to quickly adapt to the real world.
    The PHOTO PROS that Nikon showcases do NOT have the positive impact Nikon thinks they do, They are often shooting under very stilted cases with models and a LOT of flood light s, and other contrived gear. I had a FORTUNE (over a quarter of a million) in medium and large format. The Nikon F 5 and 20-35 zoom I had was often more used for images. JUST why Nikon has stalled and leans towards $10,000 to $15,000 lens and still is in the "testing phase" on lens that have great customer interest. Thom Hogan says all Camera manufacturers want to take their customers higher. IN PRICE not ability. I have seen cases where photographers get better gear, and produce poorer work. I have had TOO many cases where that has happened to me.

With sharpness and size I decided to keep my 26 2.8 on Zfc...I have a FF with 35 1.8 S if I really want low light. My main jacket pocket with lens of 28/40 and lens cap, it doesn't go in either. the 24mm is basically the same length. The 26mm with almost half the length and no lens cap protruding goes in both my jackets easily. It doesn't look so much of a difference on the video, but the pancake is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller in person, like wow tiny once mounted. The sharpness wide open is what sealed the deal though, the 24 1.7 looks soft / unusable to me wide open, where 26 2.8 is sharp as a tack. So if you're wanting a lens to make your Zfc jacket/coat pocketable I'd still highly consider the 26...

I really can not understand why Nikon have produced a F1.7 lens which is soft at its max aperture. Given that it has a min aperture of F11, it is clearly meant for low light shooting and shallow depth of field. Disappointing, to say the least. We also need to see the lens perform in real life, to see the distortion, field curvature, focus shift, flare, and ghosting performance. Thank you for your introduction.
