- Anime has changed a lot in the last 60 years, with each decade being defined by the introduction of new technology. Today, anime isn't just defined by the characters or backgrounds. It's also defined by how all of these elements are brought together.

Ive always wished people would talk more about compositing in anime, so this video is very much appreciated
He didn’t mention rotting plant matter ONCE my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
@@Astronopolis goddamit.... (I can't live with the shame, I had to edit the comment to add the missing i)
Compositing? You mean like hand drawn type animation?
@@itsblitz4437 No, compositing is what happens after the initial animation process. Here the animation is put on top of the background, The colours are adjusted to match said background and the setting, additional lighting and other effects that are necessary for a shot are added here. Like he said in the video, this is most of the time done in after effects.
I like the compositing in aot
11:48 and i- OOP 👁👄👁?!
I'm a MASSIVE Ufotable fan, so I honestly could listen to you talking about their animation forever!
Likewise!
Ufotable and kyoto animations are top tier. Both in animations and the way they treat there staff, They chose quality over quantity.
Don’t forget about Studio Trigger lol. All their frames are hand-drawn
especially with the new fate movies, the animations were a huge middle finger to every other studio other than kyoto
SAME
Anyone remember Attack on Titan’s compositing in Season 2? That left me breathless during several moments, particularly Historia and Ymir’s moment after the tower collapsed they both looked so gorgeous
That was called makeup animation. Shame they had to abandon it due to the bad scheduling.
I hope mappa also gets something like this for the part 2.
@@shubhamsharma2923 There news that the teams are changing for part 2 of s4. And with more time they could archived the quality that was missing in part 1 but I don't expect much in the event the worst happens.
Yeah that was insane. WIT Studio did that scene justice.

2D/3D mixed animation is on an exciting era. I thought this was a forgotten animation style after Treasure Planet, but I'm happy to see it back again for animes (based ufotable and Kyoto animation), and even on western animation too like Klaus.
The moment he said 140 fucking layer my mind just went blank mainly because I hate to go beyond just 28 layers and here people are going beyond 50 and my mind just went to the manhole at that point anyways thanks for this educational video I got a bit more insight on how to make my own anime if I ever even am going to make one and yeah some of these series mentioned looked exceptionally good not because the 2D was great but because the effects and 3D work kept up with the 2D work I remember SAO S1 & S2 and yeah those looked worse in terms of visual appeal compared to Alicization and Ordinal scale because the backgrounds feel too tight or small and also the lighting not matching the mood at times don't get me wrong certain scenes were perfect but not all
Glad you brought up Waki- the man's work in Alicization is definitely worth recognizing.
Waki is an absolute champ. I love that he's been sharing the process on Twitter as well. When I interviewed him, he sent back really long and detailed answers too.
Prob. the only thing worth recognizing in that show.
@@hexcode006 there is more the soundtrack the world, the lore and the writing SAO you might think the writing is bad but no no its not maybe if you would stop watching terrible translations (IE SUBS) you'd get that
@@hexcode006 the writing in Alicization is far from bad
Compositing, as with all animation is all about collaboration. The 3d artists, texturers, lighting and 2d animation all have to have solid communication or else the best comp team won't be able to save it. The animators have to know how many layers (books in anime) to use so the compositor doesn't have to fuck around for hours masking things.
The douga team will usually draw or scan in non aliased lines so paint is easier, and then the aliasing is added in ae to give back the naturalistic feeling
Castlevania has a really interesting approach to comp. Just like the animation is simpler for dialogue scenes, and then amazing for the acton shots, they do the same with the compositing. Some shots the characters will barely match the backgrounds, and then in the climax you can see 5 gradients in the eyes and face, and a bunch of layers for all the fx animation. It deserves just as much attention as all the amazing animators.
Anyways great video! Comp is super important so glad you talked about it. the clickbait is 11/10
The moment I saw Hathaway near the start I knew Kentarou Waki was gonna be brought up. Probably the best in his craft.
Please talk more about gundam hathaway. For me it felt like a homecoming of classic anime. The old school characters models just moved so well and were so subtly expressive. I wish more anime went back to this 80's and 90's look with a modern twist. And what a hugely interesting vision of what the future can look like
90's design especially. I see old animes have bloom effect in them before digital becomes a thing.
@@Joshua_N-A(sorry for my bad english) that's why the compositing is so important (part of What made 90s anime special although it wasn't in Digital) and Most of people don't even know What it is. And that's when talented people has enough time. Production committees Really need to treat the animators a lot better and stop wanting to make too many high profile anime. That's damaging the industry.
Thank you for talking about Gundam Hathaway! My anime of the year so far.
That being said I do think quite a bit of the visual splendour of that film is down to the direction of the ever amazing Shuko Murase. For instance you mentioned the first person shots. Those are already present in Murase's previous film: the highly underrated Genocidal Organ. Same goes for a lot of the areal sequences. For instance compare the opening scene of Hathaway with the bombing sequence from Genocidal Organ. You'll see a lot of similarities in style and animation. Obviously Gundam Hathaway looks better (in fact Ive never seen an anime that looks as good as that) but you can see the seeds for what would become Hathaway in Genocidal Organ.
Oh, it's totally Murase's ambitious vision. But it takes great digital creators to actually turn these ideas into film.
@@TheCanipaEffect Absolutely. The greatest director in the world would be nowhere without people who understood his vision and could bring it to life.
Also thanks you for replyimg and so soon. I really appreciate. Also thanks for using not one but two tracks from the Hathaway soundtrack. Imo the best Sawano has done in years.
Looks spectacular but was rather boring
I think it's interesting that some people get hung up on cel animation "texture and feeling" since I've never really seen any animator care about that and it's something enthusiasts only seem to care about, not even an old school grump like Miyazaki, seems to care much about it because by Spirited Away Ghibli had moved on to Digital painting if I'm not mistaken.
Plus like with Megalobox or that Gundam thing, they can recreate it, but it seems most just don't care to because it's not a priority.
Probably because animators understand how labor intensive traditional animation is. Through digital drawing, painting, and composition they can avoid the time and cost. This is also probably the primary reason why so much more anime is produced now than compared to 20 years ago.
@Jonathan Max01 When done right.
Most of ANY kind of media sucks ass and isn't memorable because either the people working on it didn't have time, didn't know what they were doing, or just didn't care. The artist having the time, talent, and passion to *add detail make something look good* is always the deciding factor, not just the equipment. All the old shows that were successful enough for you to remember never would have appeared in your conscious without healthy productions (whatever that means in Japan) and competent people who gave a shit. Those things will always exist, no matter what equipment is available, but they'll always seem rare because people are constantly being bombarded with trash, half-assed productions. There are hundreds of anime made on cels that nobody wants or remembers because they couldn't check their boxes. There are hundreds of anime being made now that no one will want or remember for the same reason.
Stop glorifying cels, glorify the artists that utilized cels correctly and the artists that continue to make good shit with whatever equipment they have.
Animation just continues to blow my mind... So much care and effort, and so many steps to bring it all together. Loved hearing more about compositing. I have a new respect for it.
I always felt, "this looks nice" when watching certain animes and cartoons but never understood why. Thank you for the great and detailed explanation
Def appreciate this video. Always nice to learn more about the underrated aspects of anime production.
Nice educational, and I think you did a great job showing us, specifically how studios use after-effects to create the aesthetics and feel of every scene, especially near the end in complimenting a variety of styles, also mentioned the artists responsible. Great video.
this is easily one of the most underrated video essays I have seen and one of the most helpful for creators like me in the industry so thank you so much.

Thank you so much for this. I personally miss and prefer a lot of the animation style from the 90s, so getting to understand where the technology background for some of the modern innovations in animation that we are seeing these days is really exciting and fascinating.

Very cool thing to see a video talking about what the DoP in animation is. I would like to add that a DoP on movies is also managing the lighting of a scene (in the same way as your examples in the video) but with projectors, other tools (light measurments or camera's setup). How tu use them, where to put them, how many we need....
Great Video !
Great video, thank you for your work as always!
Really interesting and informative, as usual.
I've watched Hathaway 12 times now and i have a guess here
I think what makes Hathaway the best looking anime of all time is because it's simple and complex at the same time
What i mean is that theres a scene where Hathaway is just walking around Davao trying to meet up with his group yet the animation, lighting, effects, background, and 3D effects are just so good to the point where even as a simple concept of a guy walking around a city without any flashy moves or action effects can make it the best looking scene in anime history
Random question but as someone who never watched anything Gundam before can I watch Hathaway?
@@mazenadel7905 Hathaway is much more of sequel to the original UC timeline

Very informative video! Thank you for the knowledge we needed. For the general audience I think we could settle with calling things vaguely like 3D effects, computer graphics, lighting etc but THE KNOWLEDGE is right here. The particle effects in Gundam Thunderbolt gives the combat such a memorable look when I first watched it. I feel ashamed not knowing the heroes behind it.
A very informative video. Good job.
When it come to compositing, No animation can compete with 'Klaus'. They made 2d look like 3d but keeping a 2d essence.
Everytime I'm reminded of Klaus, it just makes me happy.

Glad to see you mention the awesome camerawork in Gundam Hathaway. I thought the moving camera shots were amazing, especially the part you showed at 9:04.
Check out the director's previous film Genocidal Organ. Its obviously not as visually stunning as Hathaway. It's so bad.
Oh ho
Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway is probably top 3 visually stunning movies i have seen. Its breathtaking.
i start watching a anime if the intro gives me goosebumps
Nice video! Weird title though, I wouldn't have guessed the video is about compositing from it.
I wonder if it might actually be counter productive, since someone looking to learn more about compositing wouldn't really know to click on this
So "compositing" is the term for it! I've always been impressed with Ufotable and SAO visual effects but I never knew what the job is called. I've always just called it lighting, but now I know it's more than that.
Every ufotable anime is breathtaking, I love those
Tyral is honestly the best animator to use 2d character and 3d background together. I'm glad he works at ufotable. I wondering how he going to help out with the infinity castle arc in demon slayer.
Nice vid:)
7:05 You could put Hiroyuki Sawano music to the background of paint drying and it would still be epic. He's just too good!
UFOtable is incredible at compositing and 3D work, but bc they know they're good at it, they overdo it more often than not, it's desorientating and headache inducing.
Just bc you can do it doesn't mean you should.
That's why i prefer the more "minimalist" approach of 90's anime, where even the highest budget anime movie had to use digital techniques sparingly, it's also why those movies are timeless, while cutting edge anime that used tons of digital effects, 3D and camera movement to accentuate action, already look dated and corny, just half a decade later.
Nice video.
a lot of hardwork
As a movie Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is very much underrated for its animation. The way each character whether vampire or human is drawn and the interiors of the castle and the neo-gothic ornamentation along with some breathtaking action.
Ufotable's digital team is revolutionary.
Basically to sum it up
Get a good voice cast
Animation be great and if possible apply physics
Get a good soundtrack cause it can really set the mood
Make a close adaptation to the source and don't u dare go original on the ending
Avoid still imagining
Avoid powerpoints
Make sure the cut content isn't that crucial
Don't underestimate shadowing and lighting
Don't be greedy to get so much projects on your hand
Try to avoid cgi however if it is a must then make it at least a sufficiently watchable level
Don't rush projects or you'll be force to use cgi
Don't forget to do your background properly
Manage your production properly, watch shirobako as tutorial
And if all goes well u get an anime
Just wanted to thank you for introducing me to Gundam with this video. Currently running through the UC so I can watch Hathaway and not be lost lol
Thank you bro and would u be able to do a video assessing Bleach TYBW after season 2 concludes ?
im not really well versed with compositing and stuff but I feel like a title that should be talked about when it comes to this is Orange Studio's Land of the Lustrous. then again, idk if being a 3d title actually weighs less in terms of compositing.
Maybe, though Land of the lustrous did have some hand drawn drawn backgrounds and 2d animation so maybe it posed some problems for the composite team, though it was probably easy peezy for them after working on blending 3d into 2d for the last 15 years.
Though Orange's composite in Godzilla and Beastars is far more impressive imo since both shows have a lot more hand drawn elements in them compared to Land of the lustrous.
@@iswallowappleseeds927 my idea of compositing is basically the blending of all visual elements on screen (hand-drawn, effects, background, lighting etc), but with your comment, it seemed like it leans more to the blending of 2d and 3d visuals. if so then Lustrous should be all the more talked about since it basically pioneered Orange's 2d and 3d blending that seems to be solely unique to them in the industry and later resulted into beastars and godzilla.
but yeah, even if not Lustrous I expected any Orange title to at least get some recognition but canipa seemed to have slipped on it.
