The Maruyama curse. He always try to create something special to see it turned on a money devouring monster.

How ironic that Madhouse produce the Anime Monster and that Anime was the embodiment of higher ranks
But somehow some of his friends like the Founder of Kyoto was so friendly and good at treating employee
this is literally the curse of capitalism, where artists will never be able to make art for its own sake
embodiment of suffering from success

Smosh, Rareware, Madhouse and so many others
How Ironic that Mappa was founded by Madhouse director and most of its worker is from the Madhouse and also the animation artstyle was same with Madhouse

I got downvoted hard on Reddit for saying the stuff you said I said “there’s lots of young talented webgen animators and it’s because the industry is lacking of animators to the point they hire people in twitter, it’s good for them the animators in social media but it’s not good for the industry. Black clover biggest fight a month ago had lots of first timers they’re all talented but I don’t think it’s a good idea for first timers to animate the biggest fights, shows how understaffed they are and the industry.”
It's really hard because in one way it is exciting that more people are having the chance to work in anime. The issue is that the circumstances and the pay isn't at all what they deserve.
@@TheCanipaEffect yeah. I'd wait months without anime or amazing animation if it meant that the people were both getting the sleep and the money they deserved.
True. That's one of the reason why most people don't do 2D animations...people.settle for being an illustrator instead
@@indianflippingart9593 Wait could you tell me the difference?
@@Vexies see. If someone is a good illustrator...it does not mean he or she will be a good animator. See an animator needs to be very very quick and very accurate with his lime work. Which the illustrators are not. Cause an illustrator has to focus a lot more in the coloring, lighting aspect of his art. Cause he is trying to.put hi entire sould in one frame. But am animator has to learn the way the app and the frames work. Like how much difference should be between the two artworks ( line work) if the frame rate is 6 or 8 or 12 or 24. And trust me it's really difficult to get to learn that thing. Cause sometimes you'd make way less frames...or sometimes the difference might get too much or too less. So it sucks. That's why every scene is corrected like 3 times or so. Me personally want to be an animator as well. I'm working on it for like 5 months now. It's like 10 times more exhausting than being an illustrator. I even thought of settling for being just an illustrator and grow in that field for once. But you know whenever I see these anime fights I find motivation to work on the animation aspect more. I'm a decent illustrator but I was a noob when I entered the animation field. It's just a completely different realm. If you can draw perfectly and quickly them you might makes things easier, otherwise it's a pain.
All in all, if mappa wants to stick around and makes eye pleasing projects then they simply need to slow down the amount of anime they do.
The video already gave an answer for how they will keep doing it: by hiring people from other countries. They will not slow down and many directors will be burned out and go to other studios eventually.
@@theLikou1 😔
@@theLikou1 then would titles like JJK and csm be sold to other anime studios?, cause i think that’s what happened with madhouse on opm that soon went to J.C Staff
@@Manchesterunited00 It fully depends on the production committee. If they want the product out soon or good animation is up to them. Mappa can deliver good products in tight schedules, the reason OPM went to another studio was because they didn't accept the tight schedule and the director was making other series (Boogiepop Phantom)
They are. They did 9 shows in 2020... And they are slowing down for 2021. So far, Mappa is doing only 4 major shows, as well as JJK zero. They aren't killing their staff as much, after 2020.
If there's one thing I've learned from MAPPA's huge explosion of popularity last year, is how terrible the working conditions not only for the studio but also Japan as whole. And it's good to know that majority of the Anime Community are slowly realising it.
It's kinda disappointing to see the current state of the studio. I was thinking that they could be a "replacement" now that madhouse isn't at their best anymore. I hope they do something about it (which would be a miracle if it happen) because I'm starting to like the studio now.
America also has some really shit working conditions as well for people who get paid around minimum wage and possibly work more hours then people in the anime industry cause they have to take multiple jobs to survive. cx
@@zackrose6261 that’s also true, in general animators didn’t get enough love and recognition that they deserve. Yeah
They treat their employees so much better
It is important to talk about how companies treat their staff. Thank you for doing this, and I hope that you do not get too many people hating on the video for discussing this difficult topic.
Greedy people don't exist in the field of animation production companies.
There are just presidents who are desperately trying to keep the company from going bankrupt by increasing workloads so that they can pay their employees so that they don't end up in the red.
The greedy people are among the people at companies that cut their animation production budgets to the limit and make money from distribution, merchandise, and related products.
There is no smell of money in the animation production field, so the greedy people stay away from the field and just use people.
They better not, it's the truth
Sad how much there staff is overworked but let’s give the animators thanks for putting out great pieces of art (edit: wow 1k never seen that before😂 appreciate it😅)
Probably should be the other way around. We should applaud the animators for their efforts, but we should never forget the human cost and exploitation that goes into that.
@@JoelBurger most definitely. just saying that especially for attack on titan people where going after the animators instead of the heads of mappa, and that seemed backwards to me, so I’m saying instead of just giving blind praise to the company, that praise should go the to directors and animators instead.
True i wish them the best , but u know ....
Mappa is not the only overworked studio
I mean a lot of studios are overworked Japan definitely cares more about the result.
@@foxinaround1220 that’s very true aswell this is sadly where the anime industry is goin because it’s mainstream
I genuinely like the new criticism the anime industry is receiving as it widens. Sure, it may take away some of the magic: the reason people look at anime for escape from a very unfair world. But to me this is positive, we're less disconnected with the product we love so much. We know how much it means, we may even know people who work in it and suffer because of the way their art is used for profit and robbed of its value. I think this is positive, because even if the landscape is bleak we are able to create a little safety net for those we care about be it through vocal support or donations. I want this little ripple to become a wave of real change.
I think it's important as well. So much early coverage of anime was about responding to what was being made, but we need to understand where it comes from as well. The good and the bad. Anime is the home to the greatest artists in the entire world. Hopefully they can work in the conditions they deserve.
@@TheCanipaEffect wise words! what you're doing is super important, keep it up because the anime community has never made me prouder
You make a fantastic point.
Those who produce everything-not only anime, but our clothes, food, etc.-work behind closed doors and shuttered windows, out of the public's eye. Most of us don't buy our veggies straight from the farmer or anything, we go to the store and take it off a shelf right? So it's sometimes easy to forget people put hours, days, perhaps weeks of labor into this or that and see the product as something apart from them, strange as that may sound (though perhaps not to anyone familiar with Marxist thought).
It sounds corny, but giving a damn could, can, and did make a difference
@@irighterotica that's right! The biggest trap one can fall into is cynicism, believing that there's no point in even talking about this because it's omnipresent. I feel much more motivated to help make a change now that I can believe in the anime community. Isn't that how things improve?
I think the animator dormitory initiative is still around and taking donations ;) btw
This comment and these replies, they made my heart feel a little bit warm 🖤

Been waiting years for the "Pluto" anime that Masao Maruyama wanted to make and has seemingly been in production for awhile (possibly cancelled). I need that shit
Masao maruyama has left mappa tho
@@SatimoDZN I should have mentioned this but this became a thing after he left Mappa and made M2. The video just reminded me of it and I'm really hoping for some kind of news on its production sometime soon :)
Me too. That's been in production for about 2 years. MAL has listed it being 8 episode show and I'm kind of worried because adapting Urasawa in such a short time frame is adapting very difficult, unless it is one hour episodes . Pluto is one of my favorite manga and really want it to be brought to screen. Last I checked, it was slated for a release in 2021 but the pandemic hugely effected the production.
@@yashsolanki589 Pluto is my favourite manga
I heard Maruyama making it an international production in Studio M2 with a lot of time and extremely high Production value (obviously if it's not cancelled)
I really find it hard that the project is cancelled, it's a passion project for one of the greatest names in the anime industry. But they are taking their time with it, and that's good.
Gotta say, AOT: Final Season was a real eye opener for me. I still loved the season, but it made me realize how fucked the anime industry can be. You'll find greedy executives and overworked employees in every major business, but the anime industry seems to take it to a whole new level. To the point where I'm genuinely nervous whether or not the entire industry is just going to explode in on itself with the talent/work not being there to hold up all these new projects. Add on top of that the fact that Japan can be very narrow minded and stubborn when it comes to many practices, which is just another layer that'll keep the country's many businesses trapped in this destructive cycle.
Sad. I hope MAPPA studio becomes a better workplace to their creative staffs. This is one of many reasons why I always defend the animators whenever someone says, "This studio sucks!"
I agree. Defend the animators but hate the higher ups.

Really glad that you brought up the rise in freelancing work contracted through social media. Think that's only going to become more and more of a factor as time goes on, may even warrant its own separate discussion someday. Especially since, if the response to somebody saying "anime would die if Twitter shut down" on Twitter is anything to go by, people are woefully ignorant about how integral those freelancers have become.
Also Punch Line is indeed amazing. I really hope Too Kyo gives Uchikoshi an opportunity to work on another anime. I mean, Kodaka already got his with Akudama Drive, so why not?
If twitter dies there will be another platform where people will flock to.
Just as when studios get bought up and start to lose their way.
Finally someone who realises the exorbitant amount of freelance work anime studios are using. At this rate i am nervous for the future of the industry, once freelancers get better pay (i.e china of all places), what will happen to japan?
I'd absolutely LOVE another Uchikoshi works, big fan of his. Isn't he working on a few projects right now, though?

@@gamebond6248 i completely agree criticizing is definetly needed at times
Isn't the Ufotable way the best though? They take few projects but pour everything they have into it. They're sure to have made mad bank with demon slayer and the fate trilogy movies, while also maintaining an incredible level of quality and what I hope is a healthy work load for the staff. So basically they got a lot of money (that they should use to pay their taxes), incredible quality and their staff aren't dying. Why can't more studios adapt to this pattern? Ofcourse it's not a simple thing to do, but from this video it's clear that one right step and MAPPA could've easily become like ufotable and kyoani.
I don’t see Bones or Trigger struggling.
Does kyo ani also do the same?
If only the treatment of female staff was a fraction of what KyoAni's is
The difference between ufotable’s approach and MAPPA’s is that they rank high in the committee for their anime so they have more control over a studio like MAPPA when it comes to scheduling (although this doesn’t necessarily mean they have a flawless schedule all the time). This is a huge risk which most studios won’t do, but for ufotable it paid off because their anime are extremely successful and they get a share of the profits by being in the committee. There is also the fact that they have other steady sources of income such as a cafe. Basically they can afford to not do as many anime per year as mappa (even though they have even more employees to pay). MAPPA is similar to jc staff in the sense that they are large, have a lot of employees to pay and pretty much no other source of income besides taking on as many shows as possible. This could change for MAPPA if they rank high in chainsawman’s committee and it does well while jjk also does well, but I doubt otsuka will ever change his mindset.
KyoAni is a similar situation to Ufotable with the added bonus of being located in a much cheaper area, having better schedules and are completely self sufficient.
Basically like Ryu X said, they keep the lights on by taking in projects. A lot of studios are in the red and need money to stay afloat and the way the system is setup you take up more work to get the cash. Other studios may not need to worry as much about keeping the studio afloat and it can come down to a lot of reasons.
Would love a spotlight on TMS Entertainment. To me, this is the most overlooked studio by anime fans, disregarding the fact that they make amazing shows.
I wonder how much time remains before the Mappa bubble bursts (like the Madhouse bubble did)
I love many of MAPPA products, but they are leaning hard at becoming the next J.C. Staff. Someday all their products will be meet with subpar animation but they'll have like 5 animes per season.
Mappa is trying hard not to be Madhouse
Madhouse was like trying their best to be creative and unique with the highest quality possible but didn't had any astounding profit from being creative, unique, and high quality. That's why they got sold and lost their credibility
Madhouse was and is the best studio in the anime industry just from the quality of their library but quality don't make money and anime is a product
P.S. Best we can do is to support good products and discourage these corporations to be the heart and soulless factories
Cloverworks getting a head start.
@@Karma-pq9fi man.. imo but i think cloverworks is an exception tho since they're really get well funded by big corporate (sony/aniplex) even with 2/3 projects on the same season they still deliver with some high quality products (i mean the art and animation)
Correct me if I'm wrong, i might be misremembering, but Madhouse went bankrupt or something right? Mappa definetely has a staff/work culture problem (nothing new here), but I don't think bankruptcy will do them in (at least not now)
Welp, looks like you were right. A key corrector from Attack on titan's animation team is leaving the project, and 80 percent of the workers there have filed complaints about being overworked.

Good video, and as always pretty informative. It's tricky because as a fan you want too see a lot of good anime that is polished and want to celebrate the industry being successful but something has got to give if you don't want your favorite anime being made by a exploited workforce, which I imagine is what most fans want. The obvious solution is to make less anime but besides companies not going to do that, I fear it could be that it prevents more niche shows and the fewer ones we get are mostly manga adaptations.
The funny thing is how amazingly and horribly this video has aged. On one hand, yes, their planning and productions are lacking, to the point where animators are complaining about how the bad the conditions are on Jujutsu kaisen.
On the other hand, some of the directors you mentioned, alongside Mari Okada, are in MAPPA, making their own original shows and movies. Lazurus will be interesting to see, since it's been speculated the AOT team will be on it.
Now it's not even the fact that MAPPA isn't a place for creativity and passion projects, because Gosso, Nakayama, Hayashi, Matsuda, Mari Okada, etc, were passionate about what they were working on. It's the fact that they cannot plan for shit. 🫠
Hey, thanks for shouting out the hardworking PAs out there! As far as I'm concerned, they have the hardest jobs in the whole company at the studio I work at. There's so much to keep track of in the big shows we make, and they have to be on top of all, and it's insanity. I can't even imagine.
Watching Chainsaw Man is going to be that gif of that guy looking conflicted from Curb Your Enthusiasm
And know what the saddest thing is? This won't stop, because anime fans don't actually care about the people killing themselves to make those animes. We'll just want more and more and more. Nobody's talking about what you just talked about for 21 minutes. What are people talking about? "OMG MAPPA IS MAKING BANGER AFTER BANGER THEY SHOULD DO EVEN MORE!!!".
And I'm also guilty of this by the way. I had no idea how bad the behind the scenes were to give us so many good animes within a year. I was also the person thinking MAPPA should handle the top tier shounen animes and release like 5 per year. And this ignorant opinion of mine is being echoed everywhere I look.

That's a bummer. When I hear MAPPA, I think of a versatile studio that is able to produce a lot of anime and still making it look great.
Yuri on Ice's biggest issue was the insane schedule and hugely varying quality. Instead of learning that great anime takes time, they double down on the thing that almost broke the show's back... Otsuka extinguished the studio's soul. Capitalism at its finest. Only looking at growing. Like cancer.
Aptly said.
How is this "Capitalism at its finest" when other companies working under the same system are and will continue to be more successful without having to treat their workers this way?
@@ltrt6975 If your only priority is financial growth and you ignore the health of your workers, the quality of your product and the principles the company was founded upon, that's capitalism at its finest.
I don't know if you saw the same video. But it's pretty clear that Mappa is not treating its staff better than others. The workload is absurd and Otsuka wants to explore the limits of how far he can push it.
@@MelvaCross Ain't that capitalism at it's worst? Well, the ideals of capitalism is far off from what is actually happening, I get that. But capitalism working to it's utmost ideal and philosophy of freedom would be heaven right or at it's finest. And that goes to other political system, if a political system were to be able to work at it's finest and perform accordingly to it's ideals then that would essentially be a utopia.
@@HiHi-it1vr Every political system is utopian if everything functioned as intended. But everything has its flaws.
I won't debate what system is best. That's not my intention.
My intention was to point to a flaw in the mindset that is typical under capitalism: Growth over everything. The more money you make, the more powerful you become. There is a huge monetary incentive to disregard your workers' needs, the principles and ideals the company was founded on and reduce the quality of your product.
There are stories worth being told. But those stories may not promise safe financial gain. If your only goal is making money and not art, these stories will go untold.
"Capitalism at its finest" is a hyperbole. It can be better. But it's very typical for it to end up looking like this. Thus my dislike for the capitalist mindset.
This has helped me to rethink my once thoughtless support of Mappa because of the titles they were adapting which I enjoy the original works of. Not to say that I don't respect what the company has done or what its putting out now because the quality is generally incredible; however, this has encouraged me to rethink who I credit for these works, and how quickly I'm willing to give praise to the company as a whole. I appreciate where Mappa has gone dating back to Kids on the Slope and Rage of Bahamut: Genesis, for example, and I am appreciative of the Chainsaw Man adaptation, but I appreciate the actual souls, people who have worked and are working on these things. I will no longer blindly speak about how much of a "goat" Mappa is. Thank you, and thank you to the other commentators as well for helping me see how much I was viewing things from a fan standpoint, and by extension, dehumanizing the talent on future adaptations by not considering the human cost of them.
Yeah sometimes people need the realize human begin are behind these shows we love and that at the end of the day these shows are just fictional works of art
@@aero2423 Very true, and your comment makes me think of how interesting it is that fans' treatment of the works themselves can sometimes be better than the treatment of the staff behind them (specifically highlighting the harrassment of the animators for aot and even Gabi's Japanese voice actress I believe). Nothing wrong with indulging in fiction or becoming attached to it inherently, but being made aware of, and keeping in mind that there's real people to thank for it is just as important as streaming/buying the product. I'm not sure how much fans will be able to help beyond keeping this in mind and showing direct support to the people who work so hard. Thank you for your comment!
@@awesomeziza I think people get so emotional attached and invested to the point were they start harassing staff and most of the time they don’t even know who there talking to one time the harassed a director who didn’t even work on a episode they were mad about it’s just blind rage at that point and criticizing is fine and needed at times but yeah man it wild I don’t speak for all air fans but the ones that did what they did it’s honestly pathetic
The reason why I hate bandwagon dickriders who praises an anime studio and declare it the bestest of the best just because it's being adapting their fav shonen manga to anime back to back in a single year.

Any chance we could get a studio spotlight on Fire Force, or even in David Production as a whole?
Yea that would be dope
And also the studio that make Mushoku Tensei, since the studio was created to only make that anime and there's some people say Re:zero season 2 had lack of animation was because the team that used to work on rezero season 1 were moved into Mushoku tenseis studio (cmiiw)
@@Nakazawaaa They only have one series and we don't know if the studio will ever make another project besides Mushoku Tensei or everyone will be back to their original studios. It will be a little hard to make an analysis on that.
@@Nakazawaaa I'd probably wait for them to make a few more shows before I go right ahead and make a spotlight on them. MAPPA in a nutshell: From passion to greed and that's just fucking sad. Nothing shows that more than aot imo.
Imo AOT S4 is great
Jayson
It feels passionless really, pretty sure none of the animators had a great time with it. Even the freelancer chinese guy who did the Levi vs Zeke spoke out about it too
@@harolrvez7124 I feel you. You can tell the animators were miserable working on it and I feel so bad for them. I also feel bad for Aot as a whole. Seeing it ran through a studio ran by a bunch of greedy corporate asshats rather than people who actually have a passion for what they work on and for the fans they work on it for makes me incredibly sad. Aot was the anime that got me into anime and animation hence why I feel so passionate about the topic. Guess it's safe to say I didn't enjoy S4 at all xd
I liked AOT S4, but it sucks how they just took that challenge and wasted their potential on some tight schedule for a big anime
Thank you always for your entertaining and informative videos. The anime industry really needs to change, thank you for being vocal about the issues facing the industry. Hopefully things can change.
Idk why I got recommended this but I've been binging your stuff ever since and I've been loving the work
I found this very insightful, all I ever see on twitter is MAPPA being boasted about yet these issue's are worth knowing and people should be aware of the anime industry in greater detail especially in the western side of the world.
Studio MAPPA sounds like what CDProjectRed does in the videogame industry. Burn through all the people they have access to in order to create an experience that shouldn't be possible with the budget and schedule. Because it isn't. The cost of CDPR is developers health, both physical and mental. They are famous in the industry for grinding developers to dust and burning them out hard. Sounds a lot like what MAPPA is currently doing and it will turn on them hard a few seasons or years down the line, when all the great talent they rely on for consistency will have left.
I'd love to see an M2 Jujutsu Kaisen, so we can have both incredible animation _and_ relatively fair working conditions.

Dan Roland The ending you could argue is a mess but yeah MAPPA should take their time. I doubt it because money.
@@Avarn388 Oh right lol. Well, say what you will about the actual story, the final battle itself could be the most impressive spectacle of the show if they take the time to make it good. If they could just get one or two of the pros from WIT to help out with it.

it's insane how nothing really has changed the past 2 years. if anything, mappa just keeps getting worse and worse.
Very informative video. Keep up the work.
The fact you have named the animes you show is GREAT
We will see what happens in this new decade of where anime demand is high. Hopefully we will be able to still see creative adaptations and original anime.
My prediction, china’s donghua industry wins, they have a much larger talent pool and actually decent working conditions, i mean have you seen the shit they put out? It’s on par already.
I want good seinen adaptations, I'm so tired of copy pasterino shonen, there are masterpiece like holyland, alice in wonderland, battle royale, how can these manga not have adaptations.
I understand shonen sell the most bc of age group but as more people transition into seinen land I'm expecting the industry to pick up, Im 23 and I don't have the same taste I had at 16.
It's pretty sad how story basically repeats itself. Don't get me wrong I love how JJK looks, I love Zombieland Saga, and i'm excited for Chainsaw Man. But the way projects like AOT got handled tells me that it's really not worth it sometimes. Mappa has amazing talent under them, but if this continues I feel they most certainly will keep losing a lot of them. What started as a studio created with passion became another Madhouse.
@gigaccc That’s literally what OP meant
Aot s4 animation wasn't bad imo, it was worse than wit's but good considering they didn't have a lot of time. It's pretty sad tho what the animators have to go through and that MAPPA keeps getting more and more animes to make instead of investing on those they already have, like, aot season 4 probably could've been way better if they didn't overwork their employees with a lot of different animes.
@@banana-uo3be Not talking about the animation, the production of Aot was a mess, animators left the studio for it, they had to finish stuff hours before the episode aired. It was hell.
@@SKOT_3 Yee
I've noticed some issues of art and animations bits here and there, as I was watching.
Even if the overall animation still looked great. The support studio they passed the 3D cgi models onto, did a pretty fantastic job for the titans tbh. Not as detailed as it was in S1-3 2d art (still looked alot better than the very videogame-y look of the Colossal in S3) but still looked great imo (hell even WIT went through its own bs with S1 and S3's from higher ups, like Mappa has.)
But anyways, we wont see the touch ups and fixes till the bluray/dvd release and IF the streaming services replace those eps with the cleaned up versions.
incredible video, thank you

@@shayandoomed9889 what have that produced in the past?
Well, MAPPA really take a risk with AOT, specially with the CG.
The CG was good, but, the level of animation WIT gave to AOT is undefeatable.
Not "undefeatable", with better schedule, any good studio, even WIT themselves could do a better job than they did. Like, if KyoAni would have done AOT, they would have took like 2 years minimum, but the animation would have been way better. So, it's not that the animation is undefeatable, it's if the animators are working in a healthy condition or not.
@@oh2075 , I'm not talking about just the Animation, I'm talking about the style too. WIT's style for AOT is perfect, I never felt the tention in other animes like I felt in the case of AOT of WIT.

@@sourinbhattacharjee5426 yes, I am proudly a KyoAni fanboy.
Though I appreciated MAPPA doing Attack on Titan The Final Season, I somehow felt that the "MAPPA good" thing on social media when it was airing wasn't showing the whole picture. This video shed light on that from the overworked animators on tight schedules and hiring foreign talent to be on schedule not being compensated the amount they deserve. I get that the movement is for the animators but slapping on the studio's name kinda defeats the purpose when the studio has put them on that position to begin with.
You just earned a sub! Amazing vid
Thanks for this video. I think it’s really important to discuss the studio as a whole and not make just a showreel. These animations aren’t created in a vacuum, there are people behind them and you can’t really separate the maker from the product.
I think it’s important we talk about the talent who make these happen and understand that the company is a not the same as it’s talent; we should flip the order and primarily talk about the talents and use the studios as footnotes. Just like we don’t listen to bands because we love their label, we love the music the talents make. It should be the same with animation studios.
And ethical consumerism is more of a thing and we as consumers of animation also like to know at what cost are our products made. Thanks for this video, it was very interesting and informative as a fan of many of those shows.
“Yasuke will be brilliant!” Lol
I mean, that's Netflix's fault.

Great video about MAPPA, I had my worries about how it was possible for a company to produce as much as they do rn. There's only one detail: The system *works* as intended, and this is proof of it.

Them animators are on that exploitation pain
Yasuke was made back in 2018 with enough time. Also most of the animes that have been announced started the production before even it get announced
After this, they'll mostly focus on sequels rather than grabbing more animes. It will be bad for the studio if they still ongoingly grabbing more
