@@Vexies see. If someone is a good illustrator...it does not mean he or she will be a good animator. See an animator needs to be very very quick and very accurate with his lime work. Which the illustrators are not. Cause an illustrator has to focus a lot more in the coloring, lighting aspect of his art. Cause he is trying to.put hi entire sould in one frame. But am animator has to learn the way the app and the frames work. Like how much difference should be between the two artworks ( line work) if the frame rate is 6 or 8 or 12 or 24. And trust me it's really difficult to get to learn that thing. Cause sometimes you'd make way less frames...or sometimes the difference might get too much or too less. So it sucks. That's why every scene is corrected like 3 times or so. Me personally want to be an animator as well. I'm working on it for like 5 months now. It's like 10 times more exhausting than being an illustrator. I even thought of settling for being just an illustrator and grow in that field for once. But you know whenever I see these anime fights I find motivation to work on the animation aspect more. I'm a decent illustrator but I was a noob when I entered the animation field. It's just a completely different realm. If you can draw perfectly and quickly them you might makes things easier, otherwise it's a pain.

It's kinda disappointing to see the current state of the studio. I was thinking that they could be a "replacement" now that madhouse isn't at their best anymore. I hope they do something about it (which would be a miracle if it happen) because I'm starting to like the studio now.

There are just presidents who are desperately trying to keep the company from going bankrupt by increasing workloads so that they can pay their employees so that they don't end up in the red.
The greedy people are among the people at companies that cut their animation production budgets to the limit and make money from distribution, merchandise, and related products.

But to me this is positive, we're less disconnected with the product we love so much. We know how much it means, we may even know people who work in it and suffer because of the way their art is used for profit and robbed of its value. I think this is positive, because even if the landscape is bleak we are able to create a little safety net for those we care about be it through vocal support or donations. Most of us don't buy our veggies straight from the farmer or anything, we go to the store and take it off a shelf right? So it's sometimes easy to forget people put hours, days, perhaps weeks of labor into this or that and see the product as something apart from them, strange as that may sound (though perhaps not to anyone familiar with Marxist thought).

Isn't the Ufotable way the best though? They take few projects but pour everything they have into it. They're sure to have made mad bank with demon slayer and the fate trilogy movies, while also maintaining an incredible level of quality and what I hope is a healthy work load for the staff. So basically they got a lot of money (that they should use to pay their taxes), incredible quality and their staff aren't dying. Why can't more studios adapt to this pattern? Ofcourse it's not a simple thing to do, but from this video it's clear that one right step and MAPPA could've easily become like ufotable and kyoani.

The difference between ufotable’s approach and MAPPA’s is that they rank high in the committee for their anime so they have more control over a studio like MAPPA when it comes to scheduling (although this doesn’t necessarily mean they have a flawless schedule all the time). This is a huge risk which most studios won’t do, but for ufotable it paid off because their anime are extremely successful and they get a share of the profits by being in the committee. There is also the fact that they have other steady sources of income such as a cafe. Basically they can afford to not do as many anime per year as mappa (even though they have even more employees to pay). MAPPA is similar to jc staff in the sense that they are large, have a lot of employees to pay and pretty much no other source of income besides taking on as many shows as possible. This could change for MAPPA if they rank high in chainsawman’s committee and it does well while jjk also does well, but I doubt otsuka will ever change his mindset.
KyoAni is a similar situation to Ufotable with the added bonus of being located in a much cheaper area, having better schedules and are completely self sufficient.

Basically like Ryu X said, they keep the lights on by taking in projects. A lot of studios are in the red and need money to stay afloat and the way the system is setup you take up more work to get the cash. Other studios may not need to worry as much about keeping the studio afloat and it can come down to a lot of reasons.

On the other hand, some of the directors you mentioned, alongside Mari Okada, are in MAPPA, making their own original shows and movies. Lazurus will be interesting to see, since it's been speculated the AOT team will be on it.

Studio MAPPA sounds like what CDProjectRed does in the videogame industry. Burn through all the people they have access to in order to create an experience that shouldn't be possible with the budget and schedule. Because it isn't. The cost of CDPR is developers health, both physical and mental. They are famous in the industry for grinding developers to dust and burning them out hard. Sounds a lot like what MAPPA is currently doing and it will turn on them hard a few seasons or years down the line, when all the great talent they rely on for consistency will have left.
I'd love to see an M2 Jujutsu Kaisen, so we can have both incredible animation _and_ relatively fair working conditions.

Not as detailed as it was in S1-3 2d art (still looked alot better than the very videogame-y look of the Colossal in S3) but still looked great imo (hell even WIT went through its own bs with S1 and S3's from higher ups, like Mappa has.)

Though I appreciated MAPPA doing Attack on Titan The Final Season, I somehow felt that the "MAPPA good" thing on social media when it was airing wasn't showing the whole picture. This video shed light on that from the overworked animators on tight schedules and hiring foreign talent to be on schedule not being compensated the amount they deserve. I get that the movement is for the animators but slapping on the studio's name kinda defeats the purpose when the studio has put them on that position to begin with.

Thanks for this video. I think it’s really important to discuss the studio as a whole and not make just a showreel. These animations aren’t created in a vacuum, there are people behind them and you can’t really separate the maker from the product.
I think it’s important we talk about the talent who make these happen and understand that the company is a not the same as it’s talent; we should flip the order and primarily talk about the talents and use the studios as footnotes. Just like we don’t listen to bands because we love their label, we love the music the talents make. It should be the same with animation studios.
And ethical consumerism is more of a thing and we as consumers of animation also like to know at what cost are our products made. Thanks for this video, it was very interesting and informative as a fan of many of those shows.
