9:50 This shot feels absolutely insane to me. Just how many unique Denji frames do we have here? There's no vector tweening here, I zoomed in and you can easily notice the slight jitter you can expect of anybody who has to draw so many near-identical frames with only small changes from frame to frame.
Actually, this exact comment could be made for several scenes in this anime, but this one takes the cake for being over 8 uninterrupted seconds of constantly changing perspective, on a character in standard anime style (not stylized for ease of animation), and entirely animated on 1s. The fact that they used a CG background, or a 3D pose model reference for Denji, or that the shot begins with only Denji's left foot being visible doesn't detract at all from the 200+ drawings of Denji on display, all without being able to reuse any part of previous frames due to the changing perspective, all spent on this scene alone.

While the hyper color style would be cool for chainsaw man, it would not have the same merge between cinema and anime that truly makes the show unique. While I liked the direction the anime took, I realized after reading the manga that the cinematic inspiration was just as strong there, and that having cinematic anime with stylized OP/ED's is honestly more reflective of the source material than if the entire anime looked like the manga covers, especially when we have unique endings for EACH episode in different styles. Honestly one of the best and most faithful anime adaptations, because while it may have some surface level changes, it's essence is as close to the source material as you can get.

The insult of CSM style has gotten pass my "Don't Care" limit. I'm also the one where think CSM need a more bizzare approach but in the end i love to see this kind of project where the artists can express themself in different way with what people expect without lacking any quality standard. It's fresh, it's fun, it's not boring and not easy to be expected. The rejection of such a passionate project are dumb. This is what makes originality in anime became much harder to grow, people won't let some kind of variety to be exist.

I very much enjoy how the opening and endings, which are colored very emphatically, (in my opinion) act as the anime's version of the manga's cover art. Like you said, they give the viewer a lot of different interpretations, which im totally for! I remember lately someone, maybe a producer if memory serves, from Mappa said something along the lines of wanting to adapt Fujimoto's entire portfolio. Which makes my brain race with different ideas on how to adapt different kinds of stories. I like the direction that was taken for the CSM anime because it already had the vibe and personality of an exploitation film that is accented by exentricities that cartoons can only give. But I'm interested if they ever do adapt something like Fire Punch, what they would even go for. Thats when I hope the director of CSM episode 8 (my favorite) gets the helm somehow, because I think that's a story where his camera movements would benefit the most!

Ushio's tracks for CSM are absolutely gorgeous, my favorite moment is the one where we see Makima get back up on the train, where she just...stares. I'm not a music guy, but his music captures the unsettling feeling so well through the composure.

I always thought the cinematic feeling adaptation was just a poetic stroke. Almost every work of Fujimoto includes a theme or even an entire character that is about the appreciation of art, specifically film. The opening being several homages of cinematic scenes should be telling that this team takes Fujimoto’s work very seriously.

Chainsaw Man getting this treatment just makes sense to be honest. It's a guaranteed sell, yes, and it's massively popular, but that's nothing compared to how huge the story is itself. Not in terms of story length or worldbuilding detail, but instead in how you could ask anyone what the story is about and you'll likely get thousands of different answers that are all debatably correct. Every time I rewatch an episode or re-read the manga I end up leaving paragraphs of text somewhere talking about ONE MOMENT in the story that I have to analyze. And that bleeds out into the rest of the story like drops of ink into a massive body of water. After I finished reading part 1 for the first time I was stuttering and stammering to explain what I thought the story was about. I wasn't sure if the message at the end was one of great hope or great despair. I ended up just saying "it's about EVERYTHING" and I felt stupid saying it at the time, but I haven't had anything happen to make that feel incorrect to me. This story SPARKS something in people to an extreme degree.

I saw an article from a Sakugabooru community member talking about Nakayama’s direction controversy to this series. Not many people in Japan are very happy with the cinematic and photorealistic tone, the earthly grey real life colors, and serious direction of the adaptation, there’s a lot of people here in the west who complained about it on social medias.
My recommendation to manga readers and anime onlys is to view the Chainsaw Man watching experience as an entirely different stand alone series where you can’t expect the outcome and not as an adaptation. I think that’s what Nakayama tried to do with Chainsaw Man, give it it’s own world within his vision away from adaptations, anime tropes, comics and tv mainstream and also in respect to Fujimoto’s love for cinema.

12:46 I'm A-OK with CG Ghost here. The messy hair and neck-patch of flowers would've been hell to keep consistent and good-looking in 2D, and the innate uncanniness of fully CG-lit characters in anime isn't a bad fit here. We are looking at something that should be highly detailed, uncanny and off-looking. Just the kind of thing computers are talented at. And shadow composition errors in the hands-crawling-on-the-floor shot aside, it's one of the absolute sickest shots I've ever seen on any anime. In terms of vibes, it is immaculate. It encompasses the creepy and the hype of the moment, all at once. Same with the shot of Snake just hard cut disappearing after being told to leave and leaving Ghost's falling severed head behind in slow-mo. No sound or transition effect, just... gone from one frame to the next, along with your hopes and dreams. Unreal. The kind of cinematic flair that is unique to the possibilities of the anime medium and couldn't be achieved to the same extent on the original source material.

I personally love Nakayama's direction. It's exactly what I imagined while reading the manga. He lets the scenes breathe, his angles give this tangible feeling to whatever is happening and he focuses on highlighting details that add to the characterization of the characters (something I consider to be real important for a story like CSM), one example that comes to mind being when Denji tells Aki that he never went to school and Aki gives him this side-eye look and stays quiet for a second.
Nakayama adapted Himeno's sacrifice perfectly, I was stunned while watching Himeno vanish little by little combined with that beautiful OST. I don't think I felt that immersed by her sacrifice when reading the manga. I believe Nakayama's realism was also responsible for making me realize how truly messed up and gritty Denji's life was at the beginning of the story. Between Pochita and Himeno's death he definitely knows how to provoke strong emotions. I was particularly pleased and Impressed by the way he handled the entire Eternity Devil arc.
And I think people are being way too harsh on him due to their own specific perceptions of what CSM adaptation should've been. In my opinion the colored covers (and the unofficial colored version) of the manga gave the impression of saturated colours being inherent to CSM and the only way it could've been represented, but the insanity and chaos of the story can absolutely be conveyed in more than one way. It doesn't need to be a Trigger kind of animation. A cinematographic approach allows to expand on CSM more psychological and humane aspect while still maintaining that comedic and cartoony feeling.
There's things I would've done differently but there will always be complaints like that when adapting a work as famous as CSM. Overall Nayakama's direction was unique and solid.

    @wordsoflove8787 Рік тому +12

I think Ryu Nakayama's vision for this series is honestly perfect. The manga reads like a movie storyboard at numerous points, the movie references are clear as day and his use of letting a moment or scene breathe even in the manga creates such a great contrast with the chaos that follows in the rest of the story. It's such a shame he has such nasty detractors online, for a first-time director his approach is just fantastic to me. As exemplified with episode 1 and the industry-pushing episode 12 with some of the best 2D/3D blending all-round I've seen in years.

As i heard The CGI department is in-house which is very impressive for a TV Show (they made a CGI studio for themselves). If The compositing is in-house, then I'm excited for JJK season 2, despite the actual production schedule is not good (The pre production was good as i heard).

They made a CGI studio for themselves (CSM and AOT part 2 CGI is in-house). As you said they are handling most of their projects (compositing). They are appearing more in the production committee than Before (which is not an easy thing and it's also risky). What is even more risky and rare is that they can even Fund a Show Completely like CSM and this new isekai Show. Sure their direction has flaws and is not easy at all (if production committees weren't this harsh, it wouldn't have been a lot easier, but it's kinda makes sense that the production committees Dosen't want this to happen.)but looks like they want to get more and more independent and create a lot of Quality shows (and looks like they are successing to do it a lot more than Before) and also they are growing so quickly. And more people are joining them like yubata (even looks like Gosso has joined Mappa 💀. Which is possible that he is gonna be The director for JJK season 2). The best thing I hope comes from Chainsaw Man is that it proves the viability of these shows outside the traditional anime committee structure.
That setup has resulted in a medium that prioritizes promotion of manga, unfinished stories, subpar products, & overworked artists, just to dump a project & move on to the next glorified advertisement. It's ridiculous that such a great medium is resigned to leaving 90% of its stories unfinished...
It feels completely backwards... a great medium's only purpose is moving more physical, paperback volumes of manga? That'd be like if Hollywood only made movies to get people to buy celebrity magazines, or MCU films to push weekly comics...or Baseball being played to push baseball cards. Why can't the medium exist & be profitable on its own accord, absent all the tertiary stuff?
It's become so foreign to see a show just get a normal, one season a year setup, that continues the story & progresses until its conclusion. You either have an endless series that pumps out episodes every week all year (like One Piece) loaded with filler to pad out the runtime, or shows that disappear for years on end, either never heard from again or reemerging out of nowhere (like Classroom of the Elite).
All of this is due to the traditional anime-committee structure, and anime studios taking on a million projects just to get by. It's why you have a billion Isekai release each season, with 99% of them never being continued. Even shows that are successful & beloved go abandoned. Look at Magi: Kingdom of Magic... It was hugely successful in boosting manga sales, keeping the series in the top 10 sellers its entire run. But because it was so successful, the anime committees felt it did its job, therefore no more Magi!
If it didn't boost manga sales, it'd get discontinued. If it did push manga sales, it did its job & gets discontinued.
Anyway, apologies for the long rant. This medium deserves better. Anime can be successful absent of anime-committees. Content is king these days, and licensing to streaming services can be extremely lucrative on its own. I hope Chainsaw Man proves extremely successful so this trend can continue.
