Cheers! It's too amazing not to share. Definitely not for everyone, but lots of people have no idea what they're missing. Unless good times in my opinion!
I can’t do big dives with a heavy weight belt and tanks anymore due to injuries but I definitely could do this. This is actually inspiring and I don’t say that often.
That's awesome, happy to help. I got into freediving/spearfishing/snorkeling after some injuries from boxing. It's definitely easy on the body and rehabilitative. I have my scuba cert and equipment but I find it was easier to just hold my breath. All the scuba equipment becomes a nuisance with the cold water.
I'm glad to finally found a local BC spearfishing channel. The ones I've been following are based in Florida and Australia. More power to your channel!
Haha cheers! I've filled an extremely small niche. Happy to share my adventures though, they are loads of fun. People don't know how awesome it is here which is a shame.
@@Usachatnow thanks! I appreciate that. I'm happy people find value in these edits. The trips are a blast and I'd rather make a video than watch tv. Comments like this keep me going!
I wish easy video had been around 40 years ago. I would dip net Dungeness off the ridge on Newcastle island at low tide as a child with my dad. Great memories. Wish I had recordings .
That's the main reason I make these videos. If my UA-cam account was shut down today, I'd still be editing tomorrow. I watch my older videos from time to time and it's crazy how much you forget. High definition memories is what I call em. I have some pictures from when I was a child on Newcastle, videos would definitely be cool.
Awesome! Your footage is so crisp and clear and the editing is great. Some great music. The camera quality at the 7:10 mark is higher than the 12 min mark. Are you using different cameras? I think you said you were using an Osmos? Ocean nerd for life! Dead skates are the only ones I've seen, a few times actually. Seeing a live one would be a great day. Happy swimming to you and yours!
Thanks man! Finding the right music is half the battle haha. I've been using the insta360 ace pro for all my underwater stuff since Dec. I'm really happy with it! I think the visibility is just better at 7:10 so it looks cleaner. It's a wicked camera though. And yeah, skates are dope. I wish they were more common. My buddy Ethan got some epic footage of a Big Skate, I'm craving for an experience like that. Another friend saw a torpedo ray off Ucluelet. I'd love to see one too but I guess they are electric, aggressive and can stop your heart. I wanna see one from a distance haha
Oh wow! That would be freaky. Seeing anything that's aggressive towards humans would be a bit of a heart stopper whether it stings you or not! Thanks for the clarification on the video! Everything looks really great btw. The ocean is so beautiful and it's amazing exploring it but it definitely highlights the importance of respecting it and it's beings when you read about some of the venomous creatures. Like a cone snail. Ranging from 1cm to 20cm long with enough venom in it to take out 700 people! Just wild. And it just looks like a pretty shell. Pretty safe in our waters though! Still, safe diving everyone and big ocean love.
@@shanefoster6018 haha thanks bro! 10,000 would be a big milestone. Maybe it'll happen in 2024. If not, quality over quantity. My subscribers are awesome haha 👌
thanks for another great video. I am going to go diving at Cabbage Island this weekend and I am going up to Desolation Sound next month. Are there any other good spots around the Southern Gulf islands?
Wicked man that's exciting! How was Cabbage island? I hear some 6 gills hang out there in 80' of water. I'd love to go explore there and look one day. There are lots of good spots, I'd google some of the artificial reefs. The GB Church is a wicked spot and it's at freedive able depths too.
So your channel came up on my UA-cam and I instantly recognized you from somewhere and it had taken me a few minutes to realize that you had taught me a confined space and fall protection course earlier this year! I’ve been glued to your videos the past few weeks and it has brought to my attention that I would love to get into the sport of free diving and spear fishing. I was going to ask you since I have no experience at all if you know of any local introduction courses on free diving? also tried reaching out on your instagram but wasn't too sure if you would have seen it.
Thanks! Hmm, the best option is to get your equipment and certification if you plan to freedive. You can also just buy a cheap wetsuit, snorkel, mask and fins and search around for crab at the beginning. That's always a good time! Proper equipment is necessary if you plan to dive though.
@@PNWSamson Wow thanks for the response, I hear you - yeah not expecting to start free diving yet but would love to see white rock pier similar to your last video there
You have had many suits i have the same cressi apnea suit it was cheap but i still get a lot of fish with it and pretty darn warm how does that cheaper suit compare to your nicer ones ?
I think it's great. I got it for warm water when I visit Bermuda in the winter. Works around here in BC in some areas during the summer too. Do you have the 7mm? Mine is only 3.5mm. the only thing I'm not a fan of is the layer over the neoprene. I prefer the neoprene directly to the skin, though some people prefer the lining.
@@PNWSamsonI have the 7mm I love it good to about 46 degrees then get cold about an hour and a half into my dives but by then I’m tired out any how I just always questioned the quality because it’s so cheap and I’ve never had a nice model of diving suit
I think fit is the most important. I'd buy the apneaman again. It's just not super fancy in terms of looks. I think that's what people pay for anyway, fish don't care what you look like haha.
In some areas during the summer months I would be. I wouldn't be diving around false Creek that is for sure. The warmer water during summer causes all the bacteria to multiply like crazy. I'm not concerned around white rock as there is a pretty strong exchange of water in the boundary bay with each tide. I've dove around Stanley Park in the winter, I prefer to do so on a falling tide so the current is pulling the water from the waste water treatment plant out to sea. If you stay educated and know your surroundings, the risk can be virtually eliminated.
My comment didn't seem to post. I rock a 7mm and 3.5mm. it depends on where I dive. It's pretty cold off the west coast of the island but not too bad on the east coast or around Vancouver.
Just a question how do you not fear sharks. I would love to dive for crabs but I just can’t get over the fear of sharks. Have you had any experiences with sharks and if so could you share them
I can’t answer for him but I also have dove in the area. It’s too cold for most sharks! The types of sharks that are most likely to attack people don’t live in the area. That said, even in warmer waters, you’re much more likely to die from the water (drown) than a shark. I used to live and work in Hawaii doing snorkel tours and never saw a tiger shark.
Yeah, I agree with Adam. I've yet to see a shark, it's definitely not a concern in British Columbia. Down in Oregon and California, shark attacks are not unheard of but are extremely rare. I've yet to see a spiny dogfish on any of my adventures. The only place I've seen a shark was on a scuba dive in the British Virgin islands. They are super chill and fun to watch. In some ways, I wish we saw them more frequently in BC, in other ways I'm happy we don't haha. Here is a list of sharks that frequent our oceans. www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/mammals-mammiferes/docs/sharks-poster-affiche-requins-eng.html
I replied to your comment. For some reason it's not showing up. Basically, they were flying very low to the water and came close to hitting Clayton and I while coming up from a dive on a few occasions. One to the side of the head could probably render you unconscious. It was pretty sketchy to be honest, especially in the states without travelers insurance haha.
