    Once more you show off the staggering beauty that the PNW has. I fell in love with the sea as a kid and the love affair deepened when I was in my early 20's when I lived just outside of Vancouver in Ladner. I'd like to one day interact with a Pacific Octopus, I find Cephalopods' fascinating but have never seen one in the wild and given their reputation to either enjoy or despise divers, I still really want to try and make meeting one a reality! Thanks again for letting us tag along on one of your adventures, Chris, and all the best to you and your Family!! Take care!! - Dave

    Sweet dude. Those starry flounder are supposed to be the most expensive white fish sashimi in Japan. I've sashimi'd a few, and they are delicious! Definitely some easy spearing when you find 'em. • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  6 місяців тому

      The visibility was awesome! Full disclosure though, it's not always that nice haha. Starry flounders must absorb the flavor of their environment. I'm not picky by any means, but the ones I've caught are not edible. They have a strong iodine taste. The Sole from the same area tastes great though. I wish I liked em because it's one of the few fish you can spear around Vancouver, BC. They are fun to catch, you don't even need a spear. If I was harvesting them I'd just chase em down and grab em by hand haha.

    Love your videos!
    Here’s some horticultural info.
    Those flowers you called dandelions are actually catsear (aka false dandelion).
    In your wildflower garden, avoid bindweed (aka morning glory) as it will take over everything. If you buy a seed mix, make sure you check the ingredients list to ensure it isn’t included.
    You also had some shots there of Yarrow and that is a great natural plant. You can find lots of great wildflowers if you go for a drive up a logging road, including fire weed, columbine, lupines. Avoid foxglove it is poisonous for Reefie and and the kids. Don’t plant grapes because they are also poisonous for dogs, but there is lots of natural ground cover out there, including kinnik kinnik. Oregon grape grows well, but also poisonous. You’ll find viburnum and lots of other hearty local perennials in the wild and in the nursery stores.
    I so appreciate your videos. I have only ever scuba in tropical waters, but always wanted to try it out here. I didn’t like the idea of diving in a dry suit, this looks much more appealing to me. I am still surprised that you go out solo though!

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  6 місяців тому +1

      Dude that's amazing information, I appreciate that. Would I just drive up a logging road and dig/replant a wildflower or just look for the seeds? That's a great idea though, never thought of that. And good information about that to avoid too, I definitely don't want a sick dog or kids.
      And yeah, I totally get the dry suit thing. Not a fan myself too. Freediving/Snorkeling in a open cell wetsuit can be just as enjoyable and rewarding in my opinion. Thanks for the support!

    • @CCMHRT
      @CCMHRT 5 місяців тому

      Yes, nothing better than hitting a forest service road for some wild plants. I have literally done that countless times. Columbine, fireweed (forest fire sites), viburnum, walnut and so much more for free. Just bring some empty pots and a shovel. Lots of good books out there to help you ID some stuff.
      Try making tea from spruce or horsetail.
      Thanks again for the amazing videos. You’re a lucky man because you realize that you’re a lucky man.

    • @coleomo
      @coleomo 6 місяців тому +3

      flounder is typically a great fish, but in my experience Starry flounder in particular here in the PNW does not taste the best. maybe just a bad experience, have you tried much Starry flounder?

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  6 місяців тому +2

      Hmm, I would bet they are just moults. Crabs shed their exoskeletons and you'll often see a massive pile of shells on the beach. That often gets confused with a mass die off. Without seeing them it's hard to say but I'm thinking that's what you saw. And I agree with Colombo. Starry flounder in particular tastes nasty in my opinion. Like iodine. I really like sole though! I wish I liked Starry flounder as they'd be an easy source of protein.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  6 місяців тому

      No worries! Depending on who you ask you'll get different answers. Some say low tide pulls the bad visibility out. Some say high tide pulls the clear water in. Haha. I usually just dive when I can. If it's a super shallow spot I'll wait for a high tide though, like the Royston wrecks. If it's a high current area I aim for slake. Lily point is really shallow so I also wait for a nice high tide. If I'm freediving a deeper spot I might prefer a low tide and it could save you from diving another 6-7m depending on the tide.

    I am 5 minutes from that spot. Can I do it without a wetsuit?

      I did when I first started but it was cold. I could only last a few minutes and it wasn't very enjoyable haha. I'd recommend finding a cheap surf suit off marketplace or Craigslist at minimum. You'd probably need a weight belt to counteract the buoyancy of the wetsuit too.

    Navionics got super greedy and almost tripled the sub cost since last year. No thank you!
