      What this video does not mention is that Odyssey is based on a light truck chassis (same as ridge line). It’s a big boy and a very safe vehicle. You can watch NHTSA crash test ratings. Odyssey is much much safer and also drives better. Almost like a big sedan. That’s why it’s a better drivers car and safer too.

      I owned a 2009 odyssey and it was as very good except having to change the belt, water pump and tensioner every 100,000. We had 266,000 miles when it was totaled. The back 3 cylinders started burning oil at 200,000. Occasionally an issue with the slider doors but lube took care of that. I was ready to purchase a used Sienna 2016-18 but after watching a Toyota mechanic who is extremely knowledgeable with the Sienna, I’m looking for another Odyssey. I do hate the squatty suv interior of the Odyssey but I will deal with that. The 3.5l v6 sienna has oil leak issues that can get quite expensive. Cooling leak issues along with water pump, head gasket leak issues…. No thanks.

    What most people don't know the difference between these two minivans are the long term maintenance costs. Honda Odyssey uses timing belt and it requires to replace it every 90-100k miles and probably needs to clean the engine valves periodically because of direct injection only engine. Otherwise, it will have serious performance issues in the long run. In addition, both of the maintenances aren't cheap either. While the Sienna has the timing chain (never need to replace it) and it has dual injections (port/direct) and will never need to clean. The choice is clear for me.

    • @realnapster1522
      @realnapster1522 3 роки тому +18

      Honda does not need valve cleaning for direct injection if you used good quality oil and refilled it at 5K interval. Honda engines are not the problem. It’s the transmission that is the weak point. 10 speed is a better transmission than 9 speed. Unfortunately they used 9 speed for lower trims. Honda should have used 10 speed in all trims.

    • @realnapster1522

      Honda needs to be driven aggressively and taken care of. It lasts. But Toyota is overall more reliable. But I have seen reports of transmission issues with Sienna as well.

      Good news is that Honda got rid of the 9 speed automatic in the Odyssey in 2020. Starting from 2020-up, the 10 speed automatic is standard on all Odyssey trims.

    I own a Honda Accord for my wife and it’s been a great car. When I decided to get myself a minivan for the family both of these were on my radar. I ended up getting a 2018 Sienna and love it. The deciding factors for me were the odyssey only having 4.4” of ground clearance as I do some camping and have to take some two tracks to get back to my spot. I also like the Sienna having some technology that people say is dated. For me I’d rather have simpler things with physical buttons. Both were good choices but the Sienna fits my needs better and gotta love the Toyota reliability.

    I've owned both odyssey (gen 2) and sienna (gen 1), hand me downs). I'm automotively inclined and do a lot of the upkeep maintenance and repairs myself. With my growing family (4 kids), for me the Sienna is hands down the better choice. The odyssey transmission issues (across multiple gens, paint longevity across multiple gens (prone to rust quickly around the body panel corners. I live in the Midwest), and overall more costly maintenance (engine timing belt vs sienna chain). Both vehicles are solid and can go above 200k miles but the overall reliability/easy of repairs of the sienna, and design decisions that the automaker down selected on (odyssey engine belt vs Sienna chain, odyssey FWD vs sienna AWD, odyssey interference engine vs. sienna non-interference engine, etc.) did it for me (just pulled the trigger on a used gen 3 AWD sienna (2011-2020 model) after months of consideration.

      2007 my timing belt fail and the engine needed to be redone. Several valves bent. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND why Honda would do that and make a timing chain design. I ended up working on my car due to not able to afford a used engine and replacement.

    People just glaze right over the many problems Honda has these days. From the goofy transmission issues to the "great" infotainment system (except, it's not great at all) but you sure pay like it is, to the many electrical problems, crazy vacuum that works only when the van is started. The power sliding doors that just sort of glitch a little too much out of nowhere. "But it's a great car, it's a Honda!" I don't get it and on top of that, they still price the car it's absolutely perfect. Plus, a timing belt at a 100k?? Please, my Toyota, with a timing chain has only had breaks, tires and plugs at 180k. Rounding the corner with 315k and still going strong. My third Toyota. Not one problem. If you ask me, the Odyssey is not the Honda of days gone by. The styling is great but so is the Ram truck, but I wouldn't buy one of those either. Over it.

    Just saw this video while researching a replacement for my 2013 Odyssey EX. This is our 3rd Ody, after a 2002, and a 2012 EX-L. It is my "work truck", with an incredible carrying capacity, able to take in kitchen cabinets, washer/dryers, sofas, 2x4s, doors and lots more. It is ideal for my property management job, but at 110k miles it's starting to crap out: A/C leaking refrigerant, small oil leak, intermittent electric side doors, etc. Leaning towards getting a 2019 or newer Odyssey but concerned about long term reliability. On the other hand I've driven a few rental Siennas and they feel plush and capable, but with a dated interior and a very weird 2nd row seat cushion angle (though I wont be the one sitting in them). Seems many people here lean towards the older Sienna, but I'm open to check out an used one from the newer generation.

We also took a trip with two other adults for 1,800 miles and luggage for 4, all interstate, and averaged 29.5. We are very happy with the gas performance. Nowhere close to 22MPG except short in town driving.

    Picked the 2020 sienna because we didnt want a hybrid for a vehicle we plan to keep for a long time due to the concern for longevity in the battery and those electric motors. Also, the older gen has more interior room which is literally the whole purpose for us getting our first minivan. Plus, we love toyota for the reliability. Honda was our other option but seemed to have less room and cargo space. Interior looks more modern and “dressed” i do agree with that on the hondas. But at the end of the day. I just want something dependable with the most room, and AWD. To my family, simpler and bigger was just better

      If most of them are in car seats GET THE ODYSSEY! It has 6 top tethers and 5 lower anchors. The Sienna only has 4 tether/anchor sets and one of them straddles 2 of the 3rd row seats (it’s a stupid design). The Odyssey is the most versatile when it comes to car seats!

    • @katiemurphy3601
      @katiemurphy3601 2 роки тому +8

      @@RainbowMama143 Thanks! We ended up going with the Odyssey! I really wanted to love the Sienna, but when we went to check it out at the dealership there were many things we couldn't get past. For one, my husband is tall and he barely fit in the Sienna with it all the way back. You shouldn't be able to fit in a Honda Accord (Our other car) more easily than a minivan.
      Odyssey is very spacious for the driver. And the biggest deciding factor was the very odd setup to get into the third row of the Sienna. It had a cup holder in the middle of the second row with no way to remove it. And the seats did not slide forward and back very easily, my 6-year-old definitely would not be able to do it herself. So the only two options are stepping over the cup holders or sliding the seats back and forth every time you access the third row, which does not make sense practically. Easy access to the third row is very important to me. The Honda odysseys magic slide seats that go horizontally as well as vertically was a deal-breaker! We have been very happy so far.

    You failed to mention that the Odyssey has 6 top tethers and 5 lower anchors (for car seats) while the Sienna only has 4 sets, with one of them awkwardly straddling 2 of the 3rd row positions (what a stupid design!). The Odyssey is easily the best for car seats!
    My only two pet peeves with the Odyssey are the stupid “paddles” behind the steering wheel to shift between gears manually (I accidentally hit them all the time and it drives me nuts!) and the fact that YOU CAN’T PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL WITH THE ENGINE OFF!!! If your engine/battery dies in an inconvenient location, you have no way to move your vehicle without having it towed or buying a $200 shifter tool that you have to hold in place and turn with the hood open while also pushing your car. My battery died and I couldn’t roll it out of my garage to jump it with my husband’s truck. Thankfully, we have a window and my husband was able to pull up next to it and we passed the jumper cables through the window. What if my engine died in the middle of the freeway? I’d be stuck with no way to move it to the shoulder! This makes me so angry!!! I watched the video because I’m considering switching to the Sienna due to this issue.

    Weird conclusions from the video. Interior dimension and layout are the same. But I would take the simplicity of physical controls, better fuel economy and the comfy ride of the Sienna over Odyssey. Who cares how quickly a minivan can take a corner.
