2005 odyssey 272k miles original trans and engine. Well maintained but I think it has torque converter judder now. Engine burns a quart of oil every 4-5 k. Hoping for another year.
Scotty, would you have the same opinion of the Honda Pilot? 2003-2007 I believe had the 3.5L. Also the Acura MDX around that same time? Problematic engines? What about the trans' in those?
OwlBoogie Dude, you’re in for a long ride with it. I bought my 2004 Sienna at 171k miles in 2016. I’m currently at 230k and it works great. Everyone that has made fun of me for being a dude with a Sienna has later wanted one themselves. lol Congrats on a great purchase.
Bought my 2000 Sienna about a year and a half ago, for $1300 bucks. It was at 190,000 miles when I got it, now it's right at 315,000 miles, and I do Not take the best care of my vehicles, Lol. Whenever it finally dies it won't be the van's fault, it will Most likely be mine 'cause I'm Very hard on my cars.
Marco Femto At one time if you had a family you couldn’t get better it was the perfect family Vehicle but with all the suv now you can get pretty much the same thing and look good while driving them. Yeah at one time for family’s it was king of the road. And am not saying they don’t serve their purpose because they do it all depends on what you want out of it. Maybe in longer trips it would still be a better way to go.
gym shoe The woman you know must be pigs because my wife isn’t like that at all. And I keep car of are cars not here. I just got done washing and waxing my wife suv but we did have a mini van yrs ago but now she drives suv. But yeah she not a pig and neither are my daughter you must get the wrong woman but I must say suv have took over the mini van market. Even though both of my nephews wife’s have mini van but I must say they have everything tv you name it their really nice they come a long ways from when we had ares. You need to get better woman my wife is nothing like what your saying you need to do find clean ones lol. The best vans for trip are conversion vans we had one for yrs when my kids were young and on vacation you couldn’t get better tv a bed video games that was Comfort having that. But yeah suv is where most people are.
12 year old Odyssey, 170k miles, still going strong. The problem with odysseys is a bunch of minor oil leaks. I fixed them, and bypassed cylinder deactivation. Gotta say, the van is as better than new in some ways!
Muzzling the VCM is key to increasing the longevity of this engine. The van is way nicer to drive after installing the VCM tuner. I ran the original and just upgraded to the solid state version. Do your regular transmission maintenance and the transmission should go 250,000 miles. We’re at 150,000. Plan on selling it when it hits 200,000. Going hybrid for our next mini van.
@@downforwhatever67 had a VCM Muzzler installed on my 2011 Ody....185k, best most reliable vehicle I ever owned... Still runs like new.....My 2000 Ody was a POS..
My 2005 transmission and engine were still going strong at 315k. Only replaced the timing belt, and it drove like a sports car compared to my 2011 Touring, float-boat.
I'm the third owner of an 05' Dodge Grand Caravan SXT. It has a little over 175K and I love it. It's previous owner was my late buddy Jim. I'm keeping it going as long as I can.
I also had a 2008 EX-L, never had any issues until at 90k miles wife wrecked it. Bu the next one, a 2015 EX-L, had gear skip issue around only 30k miles. I believe Scotty is right, individual cars may work just fine, but if you increase the sample size, you will see problems.
My 2007 Odyssey had 216k when i traded it in. I changed the oil as scheduled, changed the timing belt once, had to replace the power steering rack under warranty and drivers window motor also under warranty. I changed the power steering o rings on the pump myself, costs were under $20, and also the a/c relay, cost was $7. Drove to Florida and back, Texas and back and finally South Dakota and back, never had any issues. I never had the transmission serviced and it shifted just fine when i traded it in. Now that said, i would not buy another one. It did use oil between changes, and for a minivan, it was uncomfortable for long road trips. I drove my mom's Sienna, and would buy it first over the Odyssey.
We have a 2006 Honda Odyssey with 44,000 miles used and it is at 95,000 now and we have had no problems what so ever. Shifts fine, rides nicely, I just don’t understand what the complaining is about. I also have a friend who drives a 2005 Honda Odyssey with 220,000 and it still runs fine with the original transmission. I just don’t see the bad problems with them.
Well good for you man. Auto trans during the early 2000s for Honda were NOTORIOUS for bad transmissions so you dodged a bullet. My sister had an '02 V6 Accord that had a transmission go out after 3 years of use. I suspect it's the same transmission that was in the '02-'04 Odysseys that were having these problems.
If you haven't had any issues with it yet , you will ! But what Uncle Scotty isn't telling you is that when the transmission starts to act up , they are replacing them but it's time to get rid of it because it's a temporary fix ? I have a 00 Honda Odyssey LX and transmission has been replaced by Honda 2 times and last time they said I'm on my own if this one goes ! But uncle Scotty has been keeping my Honda Odyssey up and running for a few years now ! Thanks Uncle Scotty
We have a 2002 odyssey with 145k miles on it. Still runs. Won’t fix it if its expensive. Drive it till the wheels fall off. It’s been a good van. When its time we will get rid of it. Got our moneys worth anyways.
@Blasian Babies There is a Trailblazer in my driveway because of a Oldsmobile Silhouette. The silly wet ran fine with 150,000 miles on it, but the body had major rot. The T-blazer has 200K+ and well not going to replace it any time soon. But with what? I would like a pickup but the olde lady says no way. I tried to get a Transit Connect. Nope you ain't putting one those ugly things in the driveway. I think I may just go buy a Mustang stick and tell her just go lease something.
I have a neighbor with an 08 who bought it new, and he's had very little trouble with it, and drives it daily as his families only car. He said he had an alternator go bad a few years ago, and some worn shocks in the rear, but again can't recall anything else major going wrong with it beyond normal maintenance.
It's funny though nobody wants a minivan, I've been trying to sell my 04 sienna for a while and nobody wants it. Oh well it's worth keeping it for me... I use it to transport 3 kids and I also use it to transport my band to gigs.... No problems with it at all
We had an ‘03 Odyssey for eight years and didn’t have a single problem with the engine or the transmission. Was a great family car for us. Went on many a trip in that thing. Am sorry to hear other people aren’t having the same flawless experience.
I’ve had mini vans since about 1992 or so. I can’t imagine any other vehicle that would be as versatile as these. Not a lot of support for someone who needs an ego boost from what they drive.
I love my 2006 odyssey too yes wear & tear u might have to pay little extra for Transmission u just have to change fluid every 60000 miles it will last long but u can’t beat it’s smooth driving and it’s class 😁😉🤩👍
2011 Honda odyssey 258970 miles, oil changes were few and far between, still no problems with the engine or transmission. Also the last fluid change was around 100k miles
Right on, bro. I have a 2011 ridgeline, same drive train. 180 k , not a drop of oil missing and shifts like a dream. Scotty`s stuck in the early 2000s.
I just brought one 2008 exl ! And now my check Engine light came on ! It’s really nice I hope I can fix the problem it got ! I need it for my family and kids
I'm on my third Odyssey. The 2004 model I drove to 349,500 miles when a head gasket went out. Other than that it never burnt any oil and the transmission had no problems. The second one was a 2006 model that I drove trouble free to 305,000 miles when I thought the transmission went out. But it turned out to be a corroded Steel line between the transmission and the cooler. I replaced it with a rubber hose and the transmission was fine. Now I have a 2011 Odyssey, that went trouble free from 142,000 to 180,000 in one year. I always used Mobil 1 extended, that I changed every 12- to 15,000 miles.
Scotty my family own 2008 Honda odyssey it's 250k miles on it, yes transmission is shifting hard, but the engine doesn't eat any oil and engine still works like a clock
That's a cute anecdote. Which doesn't negate the vast amount of data that has been collected that shows Honda had huge problems with their transmissions for so many years..
We have 425000 miles on our 2005 Odyssey. We changed out the transmission at 300000. I have it pimped out just the way I like with aftermarket upgrades and sheepskin seat covers. Love the power, ride, and turn radius on these vans. Run it with premium fuel and regular oil changes, and it will last forever.
We LOVE our Toyota Sienna. The first one, a 2008 bought new, had zero problems for 288K until a deer jumped out in front of us and totalled it. EVERY safety system worked that night and saved us. What did we buy? A used 2013 Sienna with 90K miles and have had NO problems with it for over 18 months now and 140K on the odometer.
@@ljohns9143 I'm looking for one now. Cheaper and less abused than a used mid size truck. Plus the stealth of a minivan keeps the cops attention elsewhere.
I had an 09 Honda Odyssey. I had to change out both the cv axles, an alternator, and the alignment was always out. Yes I had it aligned. It only had 70,000 miles. Should have bought a sienna
I don't know, I like Scotty, but I have 350,000 miles on my 2002 Honda Odyssey, LX model no bell and whistles, and it is still going strong. However, I did have a transmission problem at 180,000 miles that caused me to have it rebuilt by a local shop for $1500. Apparently this was a good shop, they were heavy into rebuilding Honda transmissions through factory warranty clams. I think I was lucky and got a better than new transmission since I have had no problems since. I have done the 100K timing belt replacements and routine oil changes, etc. Anyway I still like my 2002 Odyssey and drive it reliably every day. The 3.5 L V6 engine is fantastic !
yeah me too 160k and runs like butter, I service it a lot and it runs like a dream everything shifts well and the most comfy car I've ever driven. Its actually amazing
Scotty, I like your channel and your videos are usually very good and what you say about car Manufacturers is generally true.... BUT YOU HAVE TO BE MORE SPECIFIC ABOUT THE YEAR OF THE HONDA ODYSSEYS' you are talking about!... There were only a few years that were defective.. NOT ALL MODEL YEARS of the older Honda Odyssey Vans were bad. They resolved problems (in later years) ... I wish you would be more specific instead of generalizing so much.
@@jgfergus my van is not a fiat Chrysler rather a Daimler/Chrysler. I agree with you on certain models but the Caravan is a good van and to date the Chrysler pacifica's the number one rated van currently and has been since it came out. Reliability is subjective. Keep that in mind.
I have 70K miles on my 2013 EX-L Odyssey and it is doing well, no problems so far. Bought it used as well 4 years ago for only $23K and thought I did pretty good. I guess we will see how it does in the coming years.
I got very lucky. Bought my 2003 Odyssey in 2005, still going strong. No issues mentioned in this video. Real lucky. 307,000 miles so far. But I've been religious on maintenance with my vehicles, including my 1986 Honda V65 Magna.
Bought mine 2005 ody 2 years ago for $3000 at 130k. Currently 160k and still running. Made two trips from NY to Miami and back. The secret - buy LX version without VCM (no oil consumption) and electronic scrap, flush tranny, replace ATF filter and install additional ATF radiator. Also I replaced timing belt, crank seal, water pomp, radiator (was small leak) and thermostat. Serviced myself, so bought only parts, usually aftermarket but not the cheapest ones. In total ~$1000 in parts. And I love it - so much room, its perfect for long trips. Also you can carry a lot of luggage, plenty of power, smooth ride, perfect vehicle.
I still like my 2005 Odyssey. The engine and AT are still great, humming among just like when they are new. Still the best vehicle in my family fleet even after 15 years. My in-law had their 2002 Odyssey’s (known AT problem) running to 200k miles before trading them in for another Odyssey and CRV. Do not like Sienna sloppy handling and transmission shifting. It felt unsafe for me in emergency situations. With proper maintenance, I got the rattle trap 1997 GM van running for 21 years before giving it away. My neighbor’s kid is still driving it. Every design has problems. But one needs to take care of the vehicles to make sure they last a long time
Our 2010 Honda Odyssey Touring is still going strong with 137,780 miles on it. So far no majors issues, knock on wood. We also had a 2003 Odyssey EXL that had 183,890 miles on it when we traded it in.
I'm with you on the older Honda transmissions, but your wrong on that J-Series engine your looking at. If you keep the oil changed, they're bullet proof. Used in lots of Honda and Acura products and they'll run forever if you take care of them. Also, the transmissions weren't that bad either if you kept the fluid changed often.
I agree, the electronic oil life change is very long, in the ten thousand miles, with synthetic oil, i change every six thousand and trans oil every twenty
Engine oil consumption, power steering pump, CV axles, torque converter, engine mounts, spark plugs fouled. They broke down before 50,000 miles. Odyssey is not reliable. You spend thousands to keep it running right.
I agree 100 percent. I have a VCM accord j series, use high quality oil keep the oil levels where it should be, the engine will be fine. I'm willing to bet that around 90 percent of the population open their hoods for two reasons: one when they about to go on a long trip or two when it dont start overheating or making loud noises. We can talk about reliability all day but let's be honest people dont look after their vehicles. Yes I know Toyota can take neglect better but some vehicles needs a little more attention. I agree the j series is solid they can go 300 to 400 thousand miles when maintained properly. After around 2005 the transmissions in the honda Acura line up has gotten way better.
I think the original 3rd gen vans, the 05 and 06 could have problems. I kept my oil changed WAY more than the oil life indicator wanted, and my engine suffered VTEC failure at 150,000 miles. It got noisier as it aged. Finally, the van got stuck in cylinder deactivation mode, stuck running on 3 cylinders. The cost to fix it was too much, so I junked the van. Later Odysseys I noticed added a 2nd VTEC solenoid I believe to help with the problem. I did not have transmission issues myself, but I converted it to Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic ATF with Lubegard Red added to it also. The plug/magnet was gnarly the first drain I did to get the Z1 fluid out. I did a couple drain and fills with the Maxlife and the trans loved it. The next time I changed it, it did not have that crap on the magnet. I do know people who's transmissions went out early, but mine held. I credit the Maxlife with that.
Sorry to hear about others. My 2016 odyssey has 100k and no issues. I do keep up with maintenance - oil, trrransmission, filters, & alas, timing belt but it is going strong ...no oil burning, admit the transmission is not as swift as our Lexus suv, but fast enough.
So Scotty, I am so happy you stated that the Sienna crushes the Odyssey for reliability. I was responsible for picking out of a vehicle for someone who only had $6000 cash, which included the money for the taxes etc. She also had a family with children. At first I was leaning towards the Corolla since I knew I had to buy a high mileage vehicles and those last a long time. They had a 2006 Corolla for the same price as the Sienna, but it had rust on the rims and the engine seemed to make a little of a rattle noise. I also used the screwdriver to check the bottom of the vehicles for rust as well. :) Then I decided on the Sienna. Found one, a 2006 Toyota Sienna for $5300 with 155K miles. That dealership also had the Odyssey for the same amount, but I remembered what you said about the Honda Odyssey, so I decided not to even look at the Odyssey and go with the Sienna.
Bought a used '08 EXL Ody in 2014 because we thought the Hondas were reliable after our '96 Villager (a great little van) died. Recently read about oil consumption due to the VCM. Plan to muzzle it soon. Not happy to hear about Scotty's verdict but so far it has run very well.
Scott, you are damn right about every thing about honda odyssey. i have a 2014 honda odyssey, it engine blew out around 3 years normal drive and was repaired under warranty. From day 1, the engine leaks slowly and ruined 2 alternators already(the alternator got heavy grease all over it and worked over hot ish all the time and it gave up every two year). Last weekend, my husband put the 3rd alternator into it and I am praying this thing last little bit longer before I get enough money to buy another car.
LOVE our automatic 2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L. 180K miles and going strong. Can carry 7 people with luggage uphill and pass other cars. The thing is a beast and workhorse!
I bought a used 2014 Odyssey that now has 80,000 miles on it and running pretty strong, I love that V6 engine and the transmission problems were a know issue in earlier models. As long as you maintain those Hondas they will last forever. I used to be a I will never buy a minivan but after I bought this Odyssey and the way it handles, I love it!!
We had a 2005 Odyssey from new up to 105k miles. Aside from the recalls we had no issues, ran smooth and powerful. We bought a 2016 Certified Used with 22k miles, now up to 40k. No issues, rides like a dream. However, it doesn't jump off the line like the '05 did. At the time we were buying, the Sienna (options galore) with the same features was $4k more each time. Not sure why Scotty gave such a different price perspective. I live in SoCal.
Love my grand caravan! Cheap to buy, spacious and comfortable. So far she's been a treat. Over 150,000km now. Sure you get what you pay for, but I been real happy with mine.
I've had two Odyssey MiniVans (15 years) -- with little or no problems. No Trans problems at all. Loved them. Had to go with Sienna 2016 since Odyssey no longer has a gear shift. I did have to replace a power steering pump in 2016. But no problems at all.
I have my odyssey since it’s have 105,000 and now have 285 thousand miles, with no problems on motor and transmission, thanks good ,and I love it so much ,so that’s pending on the trust you have on it.👍🏻
Sadly, the 1999-2004 Honda Odyssey transmissions are among the worst ever made. But moving forward, 2005-present day Odysseys, doing a transmission drain and fill at least every 30K miles will ensure a strong running Odyssey, and will get to 300,000 miles. When comparing the Odyssey vs. the Toyota Sienna, in my opinion, the Odyssey is far more comfortable, better back support, and is a drivers vehicle (simply feels good to drive). The Sienna feels bulky and horribly uncomfortable, especially on longer drives. Sorry Scotty, but you're off the mark here.
I agree, I have a 2012 T&C and Ive had the damn transmission services 4 times in the 6 years I’ve owned her. 2 rebuilds and two torque converter. I only keep her because my wife can’t part from it, but as for me, I wanna bash the windows in every time I see it. Apart from transmission Ive had a lot of electrical grimlins that started from the damn fuse box shorting out.
I have a 2010 t&c 3.3L. Never had any transmission issues. I also had a 2007 pt cruiser no transmission issues. Only reason that one is gone is because the timing belt broke.
I’ve had Odyssey’s since 2004...I did kill the transmission in both but it was from towing. I also had a 1997 Camry that sludged out (yes it had oil changes regularly). I have a 2018 Odyssey Elite with a 10 speed transmission. It’s awesome and so far has no issues with engine or transmission. It is so much nicer than the Sienna. It’s sound-resistant now...built on the Ridgeline chassis, air conditioned seats, adaptive cruise, lane keeping assist...Sorry...I’ll take my chances.
We've had an '08 Pilot since 2010. Bought it with 30,000 miles on it and it's been great. It has almost 200,000 miles on it and other than replacing the alternator and radiator we've just done routine maintenance to it. It still runs and shifts very smoothly. I do change the Transmission fluid every 60,000 miles though so that might be part of it. It was starting to use oil but I replaced the PCV valve at 187,000 miles and now it's not using any oil between changes anymore.
I had a 2014 Odyssey with the 6 speed. It was a great van and the engine was silky smooth after 129k. No transmission problems either. I believe the problems you are speaking of are mostly limited to the 5 speed and older engines.
We have a 2005 Honda Odyssey EXL purchased in 2004 Nov. We have put 225k miles on it and it is still going strong. I had to replace the AC compressor twice in its lifetime and recently the serpentine belt with a couple of pulleys as they were squeaking. I hate to get rid of it as it rides great and coz of sentimental value. Planning to run it to the ground. The clock has reset to 2002 which is a known problem with Honda and Acuras built before 2007.
I'm a mechanic for major ambulance company out of Ohio, all the wheelchair vans (47) are sienna's. They are truly bulletproof. Most of the work I do is on the ambulances (sprinters). The company uses Amsoil for the fleet. I rarely see them.
I'm driving a 2001 honda odyssey I bought new. It has 430K miles and it runs great, with exception of a little oil leakage from front main seal. Yes, it went through 4 transmissions and honda covered them all except the last one at 280K. I had that one rebuilt. I added a transmission cooler and switched to synthetic fluid (AmsOil) and I baby it. The transmission started making bearing noise at 400K and I was told it could go anytime. So at this point I'm just going to run it until it breaks. Overall, it's been a great vehicle that handles very well in all weather conditions.
@@Mag1c4lyfe I don't think there was anything wrong with the first transmission. They just swapped it out for a rebuilt per a service bulletin (that was at about 40k mi). Needless to say I was very irritated. After that, the tranny would start acting up at about 40k. A class action suit resulted in Honda extending the warranty to 180k. They replaced ours for the last time at 200k as a good faith service since we always took the van to the dealer for service and repairs.
My 2007 Odyssey bought new now with 223K no transmission issues. I can tell by looking at the rpm gauge when it shift and the noise and feel when driving. Don't make me wrong, I took care a lot of other minor issues and engine oil leak, but nothing wrong with transmission so far. Still going strong.
I didn’t realize they had so many issues. I have a 2009 Honda Pilot AWD with over 205K miles with out any major issues, just normal maintenance. The engine is very similar to what was in the Odyssey. I only use Amsoil for oil and trans fluid and it runs like a champ.
I've had a 04(245,000mi), 05(181,451mi), and now a 11 Honda odyssey and not once has the odyssey failed us nor has the transmissions. It called maintenance keep the fluids clean and the van will run forever.
My parents used to have a 2004 Honda Odyssey from 2004 to 2018. And I drive it form 2015 to 2018. In 2015, they traded it in for a used 2015 Toyota Camry. That van didn’t have any major issues, as it aged it had some minor electrical problems, the steering wheel audio controls stopped working, the back vent windows didn’t open anymore, and the driver’s side sliding door like don’t work, also because of its age, the track for the doors need some lubrication, but that’s was when it was 14 years old and had nearly 120,000 miles on it. I don’t recall our minivan had any transmission or engine issues. I still see a ton of older Odysseys still on the road. I actually didn’t mind driving it, I kinda liked it. The used 2015 Camry I drive has more features, and I like that car too. Both the 2004 Honda Odyssey being handed down to me and the 2015 Toyota Camry that I drive are not perfect, technically Borge were used when I started driving them but they weren’t terrible either, I like both vehicles. Also if I remember correctly, the Toyota dealership sold that van like a week after they bought that used 2015 Camry.
Wish you made this 3yrs ago. I bought an 07 with 140,000 3yrs ago and already changed trans, air compressor, water pump failed, ac condenser, 1 door roller. Been a Toyota fan boy for years and bought the Honda over sienna because it looks more modern. And ever since I've been regretting it.
2005 odyssey at 250k miles still going strong for my family. Maintenance is huge, although admittedly these transmissions are weaker. They have steadily improved, the gen before the one in the video was notorious for transmission failures
I have a 2005 Odyssey. Transmission went out around 210k. Had it rebuilt for $4k. Still changes gears rough and makes high pitched sound when stepping on gas. Now the ignition lock cylinder is locking up, so I sometimes can't start the van. Thought I was gonna get reliability. Repaired transmission bc used prices so high. But now thinking I might get a different van. Maybe Sienna. Even before the transmission went out, I was spending about $300/month avg on maintenance.
@@dsha2006 I think you got unlucky. We’ve owned probably 5+ of this generation and know many others who have one. Besides normal maintenance, they usually don’t throw many problems. Higher mileage you’ll notice the trans not to shift as crisp, but with age you’ll also have CV axles start to go out, the power sliding doors not function properly, etc. I will say I love Toyotas but I’ve never really been a fan of the Siennas.
@@OfficalTCG haha yes ur right! I just had to replace right cv axle (I couldn't afford the left but that needs to be replaced too). Also the power steering pump needed replacing, timing belt and associated repairs. Sure maybe you can call these regular maintenance but if ur averaging $300-$400/month is it time to get rid of it? Even after all these repairs, cd player busted, power outlet busted. Each of those is $200 just to have it looked at. Not sure how long I should persevere. Will these repairs die down?
@@dsha2006 Timing belt is with age, admittedly I wish these J35s were chain driven and not belt driven, like many Toyotas. The power steering pumps are known to go to. It really just depends on how it was maintained. That being said we’ve never had that many issues with these. But with age, you should expect some things to start to go out. You definitely shouldn’t be averaging that much for “maintenance” though. We’ve had one that we’ve owned for many years, that had 240k miles. It would be a good few months before something outside of your normal oil changes would be required.
@@OfficalTCG I see. Did any of your Odyssey's have the transmission go out? And, how often to you change transmission fluid? I've recently had front control arms replaced, had oil leaks and was hard to find source, so the following was done: Valve Cover and Intake Manifold Gasket Replacement (expensive), Oil filter adapter seal/gasket, now they recommend a new new oil pan bc of hairline cracks (expensive). It would be one thing if it was running nicely after all these repairs, but with the high pitched noise (even after transmission rebuild which took 7 weeks) and rough gear shifting, I wonder if it's worth it. We have a fam of 6 and I've tried to see if there's an SUV option, but unless you go with a huge gas guzzler, the minivan has the space spacing for the price. I think perhaps minivans in general might have more maintenance since they are carrying more weight. My friend's Kio Rio of a similar age and miles hasn't had near the repairs I've had (even though Honda supposed to be more dependable). Never new axles needs or PS pumps, etc. But maybe I'm just more meticulous.
My parents have 2, 2005 and 2007 Honda odysseys that are well over 100k miles and they are the most reliable vans I've ever seen. Also has decent gas mileage for both the vans age. They have never broken down and don't show any signs of dying anytime soon. I also know a lot of people who say the Toyota vans are not reliable and things break on them a lot...
Dixie Normous don’t worry it’s tough. Takes about two hours. You have to pull the radiator fan. Mine went out right at 100k. And you have to buy the Honda one for 500 the aftermarket ones don’t hold up. Ask me how I know.
My 2005 Odyssey just hit 200k last week and no engine or transmission issues. Replaced the slider door rollers and fixed a power steering leak, changed timing belt, spark plugs, water pump at 105k and plan on doing again at 210k. Runs like a champ and burns very little oil - especially after switching to mobile one high mileage oil. I do all the maintenance myself and religious about keeping up with it so maybe that makes a difference. Love my odyssey. And to be honest you sound like a Toyota sales rep. Lol
My 2001 Odyssey have 350k. So far runs good. Previous owner fix transmission at 170k. Now Engine light is on with transmission error code. For me it was (and still is) low maintenance car to run.
I had a 2006 honda odyssey with 190 K miles on it. I was very good van. And parts also cheaper than Toyota Sienna's parts... But Sienna runs smoothly for sure...
Scotty, I've been trying to decide between. An Odyssey and Sienna. Been worried about potential transmission issues as I'd be getting around a year 2005 one. I feel a lot better leaning towards the Sienna now. I think that's what I'll do. You are the best!
Worked at a Nissan dealer when they came out with the van. Nissan ended up giving the customer the option to buy them all back, then they scrapped them. All us techs had first shot at the tires, radio, whatever we could get off them, as long as they could drive them on to the car hauler to send em to the scrap yard.
Thank you so much. Was going to buy a used Odyssey this week. The money spent will be critical & cannot be misspent. I’ll be going after a Sienna now. Really appreciate it!! Dodged a huge bullet!

Scotty what do thing about a2017 Honda ridgeline should I buy it.
2005 odyssey 272k miles original trans and engine. Well maintained but I think it has torque converter judder now. Engine burns a quart of oil every 4-5 k. Hoping for another year.
i got 290,000 out of a 2009 and counting original engine and transmission edit: and i tow a 3,000 pound trailer consistantly
Scotty, would you have the same opinion of the Honda Pilot? 2003-2007 I believe had the 3.5L. Also the Acura MDX around that same time? Problematic engines? What about the trans' in those?
Don't buy a Honda Odyssey because . . . pizza!
Yepp sienna are the best.
My mother currently have one. Bought it brand new in 2007.
Currently at 492K miles!
Original engine and transmission
John Le good to know. I just got an 04 with 113k on it. Still a baby in terms of miles.
I've thought about buying an older one like that. That makes me feel a lot better about the transmission.
Nice! Sienna will last you a long time. I have a 2002 Toyots Sienna with 290K. It still has the original engine and transmission
Minivans are awesome I dont care what anyone says. Comfortable and useful 😉
We've had minivans 8 years ago, we trade in our 2000 chevy Tahoe and bought us a minivan, it more luxury and spacious and fuel effeciency.
LOl!
If you were listening, he is only referring to the Honda, but recommends the Toyota minivan
12 year old Odyssey, 170k miles, still going strong. The problem with odysseys is a bunch of minor oil leaks. I fixed them, and bypassed cylinder deactivation. Gotta say, the van is as better than new in some ways!
How do you bypass cylinder deactivation? It drives me crazy when it activates
@@brian3863 vcm tuner 2/vcm muzzle
My 09 is still running great. Knowing it won’t last forever. The 2022 sucks.

My 2005 transmission and engine were still going strong at 315k. Only replaced the timing belt, and it drove like a sports car compared to my 2011 Touring, float-boat.
@@lloydandbethbeiler8127
How much did it cost to replace the timing belt? Thanks.
Scotty, it was the 1999-2004 Honda Odysseys that had problem transmissions. If you go with a 2009-2013 they are extremely reliable vehicles.
I'm the third owner of an 05' Dodge Grand Caravan SXT. It has a little over 175K and I love it. It's previous owner was my late buddy Jim. I'm keeping it going as long as I can.
My 2008 Honda Odyssey EX-L with 170k miles has never giving me any problems. Transmission works like a champ.
Mine2008 has 250k all original love mine
It’s all about maintenance and care.
Mine has 300k
Ours is close to 270000
I got 214k out of my 2007 before selling it. Ran strong shifted great. Maintenance is key.
Michael Glenn that is true .. it could be any car but as long as the owner takes care of it it will last

@@chc754 Yeah...no chief, Dodge, Chrysler, and Fiat owners are gonna have to say no on that one.
My 2003 Odyssey transmission gave up. My friend also had a 2003 and replaced the transmission twice!
I’ve got a 2000 Odyssey. 292,000 miles, original transmission and engine. I changed transmission fluid every 15,000 miles and oil every 5,000.
I miss the conversion vans of the '70,s with the crazy murals painted on them.

Nathan's Tabs and Trucks, spot on.
Go knock on some wood. You may have just jinxed yourself
There's a Sienna in my driveway because of the Odyssey.
Same
I have a neighbor with an 08 who bought it new, and he's had very little trouble with it, and drives it daily as his families only car. He said he had an alternator go bad a few years ago, and some worn shocks in the rear, but again can't recall anything else major going wrong with it beyond normal maintenance.
Even a beat up junky Sienna with 300,000 miles is still better than any other minivan brand new.
Now those are the years that had the transmission problems
Parents got 02 odyssey off the lot. Now it’s being maintained by a 16 yo, car has 300k miles 😂
I’ve had mini vans since about 1992 or so. I can’t imagine any other vehicle that would be as versatile as these. Not a lot of support for someone who needs an ego boost from what they drive.
I think I got more utility out of my minivan than my pickup lmao.
Love 2006 odyssey, yes I've had my transmission fixed...Honda took care of me, other than that it's been rock solid...I've had it for over 1o years.
RP Drifts they supposedly fixed the transmission problem after 2006 maybe that is why

The first 2 you got may have been ok because they are older but the newer ones as Scotty says are no good.
Cant stand how my 2011 handles compared to my 2005. Steering way too light, and it floats (bounces) going down the road...

Weird since I have a 2007 Odyssey with over 200k miles and still running strong. Only issue I've had is the power sliding door jamming up.
06 Honda Odyssey with 150k miles ND just had to replace the original axles and still runs super strong. Love my odyssey

But one needs to take care of the vehicles to make sure they last a long time
You sound like a Chevy dealer.
Yup on the Acura TL
Imma stop stealing exotic cars and imma start stealing minivans thanks Scotty :)
Make sure there are no kids in the back.
Good for drivebys
@eimb1999 Emmas sister. Lol
Tell us what happened after that?
What happened after that?
Did it end up being reliable for her?
'09 Odyssey owner here. Yes, transmission went out before 100k. Has a slew of other problems as well. Next minivan will be a Sienna.
You don't have anything to worry about
Scott, you are damn right about every thing about honda odyssey. i have a 2014 honda odyssey, it engine blew out around 3 years normal drive and was repaired under warranty.

I have the base model, no stereo, 2010 model
I bought a used 2014 Odyssey that now has 80,000 miles on it and running pretty strong, I love that V6 engine and the transmission problems were a know issue in earlier models. As long as you maintain those Hondas they will last forever. I used to be a I will never buy a minivan but after I bought this Odyssey and the way it handles, I love it!!
my 2005 odyssey still runs like new
We had a 2005 Odyssey from new up to 105k miles.
What year may I ask? I have an old 96 Plymouth Voyager base model with 235 000kms.
I've had two Odyssey MiniVans (15 years) -- with little or no problems. No Trans problems at all. Loved them. Had to go with Sienna 2016 since Odyssey no longer has a gear shift. I did have to replace a power steering pump in 2016. But no problems at all.
I have my odyssey since it’s have 105,000 and now have 285 thousand miles, with no problems on motor and transmission, thanks good ,and I love it so much ,so that’s pending on the trust you have on it.👍🏻
Buy a Toyota Sienna. Thing will go forever.
Even now ?
Toyota santica is the way to go ?
Joshua Peltier .. I ❤️my Toyota Sienna.
Not that ~millennium aged Odyssey's aren't still running around but they're now about 20 years old. The 2000 Odyssey was also a Venture with Isuzu.
You ESPECIALLY don't want any Chrysler mini van. Their transmissions are horrid
I agree, I have a 2012 T&C and Ive had the damn transmission services 4 times in the 6 years I’ve owned her. 2 rebuilds and two torque converter. I only keep her because my wife can’t part from it, but as for me, I wanna bash the windows in every time I see it. Apart from transmission Ive had a lot of electrical grimlins that started from the damn fuse box shorting out.
rbagel55 Chrysler overall is pretty bad lol
Tell me about it. Theres a reason shes my winter beater ;)
I've had my 2012 Odyssey Touring van for five years and I love it.
I think that Matt Foley lives in one of these down by the river.
HAHAHA Good One
Hahaha😂😂😂
He's stuck by the river because his transmission blew
one of the few strong points for Chrysler is at some time, maybe late 90's some came from Factory w/ Stainless Steel Exhaust components.
I love Honda odysseys. I’ve had 3 of them so far. I put in the Lucas transmission stop slip and have never had any transmission problems.
Too late for me. Got the 2014 odyssey for the wife. 77k and so far no issues but now I’m waiting. Sounds like the issues are not just newer models.
I had a 2014 Odyssey with the 6 speed. It was a great van and the engine was silky smooth after 129k. No transmission problems either. I believe the problems you are speaking of are mostly limited to the 5 speed and older engines.
2nd generation
I’ll stick with my Toyota 4Runner
Lol
Chus Papi Hahahaha definitely
Jeeping Down Under
Like your channel man.
I use to have a WJ myself.
Same! 1998 with 320k miles
Boring
I love Honda, but Toyota’s make some pretty awesome trucks.
I have an 08 odyssey with 208k and it still runs like champ.
How did you manage to get Honda to cover your transmissions for you?
@@Mag1c4lyfe I don't think there was anything wrong with the first transmission. They just swapped it out for a rebuilt per a service bulletin (that was at about 40k mi). Needless to say I was very irritated. After that, the tranny would start acting up at about 40k.
A class action suit resulted in Honda extending the warranty to 180k. They replaced ours for the last time at 200k as a good faith service since we always took the van to the dealer for service and repairs.
Were you on TV about your van?
Scotty doesn't always eat pizza, but when he does it's from an Italian American IN New York City 😂👍🏻
He flys to New York to eat pizza... seems legit 👍
I like minivans , I have been driving them for the past 25 years. They are the most versatile and practical vehicles out there.
REV UP YOUR MINIVANS!!!!!!! I was just thinking of buying a van the other day! HAVE A GR8 ONE SCOTTY!
I'm still waiting for a pocket sand review!
Metanoia coming soon!
A windowless one right? I do a pretty good "Free candy inside" paint job.
Dan Bartickle no!
@@dalegribble3684 get a Mississippi built Nissan Quest
Talk about true! My Odyssey just blew it's second Trans! Just didn't know! Wish I saw this video 5 years ago!
2012 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite has been bullet proof except alternator at 70k. Now at 110k miles and changed trans fluid once.
"Wallowing, then wobbling.."
I've never heard you so lyrical Scotty! 🤗
What a poet, and we didn't know it 😃
Thanks Scotty, saved me from buying an Odyssey. Now looking for a Sienna.
What about VCM on these engines? Why no talk about that? And the injectors on the new direct injection ones?
Not to mention how many alternators I see go out and where they positioned makes it a pain to get too.
Dixie Normous don’t worry it’s tough. Takes about two hours. You have to pull the radiator fan. Mine went out right at 100k. And you have to buy the Honda one for 500 the aftermarket ones don’t hold up. Ask me how I know.
I have 04 Odyssey with zero problems. I had it for 13 years. Scotty Kilmer your videos are just for entertainment purposes.
Lol
Is it still holding up?
My 2001 Odyssey have 350k. So far runs good. Previous owner fix transmission at 170k. Now Engine light is on with transmission error code. For me it was (and still is) low maintenance car to run.
I had a 2006 honda odyssey with 190 K miles on it. I was very good van. And parts also cheaper than Toyota Sienna's parts...
But Sienna runs smoothly for sure...
Yep, our family had one. Transmission was a POS. Nice minivan overall, but built like crap.
Sienna is the more reliable minivan than Odyssey.
crap van for crap family
I have a 2003 Odyssey about to hit 200K miles works great.
Demo Demo for now...
Scotty, I've been trying to decide between. An Odyssey and Sienna. Been worried about potential transmission issues as I'd be getting around a year 2005 one. I feel a lot better leaning towards the Sienna now. I think that's what I'll do. You are the best!
I love the sienna minivans. I never had any major problems with my 2013 sienna.
I have a 08 and never had any problems 160,000 miles
Worked at a Nissan dealer when they came out with the van. Nissan ended up giving the customer the option to buy them all back, then they scrapped them. All us techs had first shot at the tires, radio, whatever we could get off them, as long as they could drive them on to the car hauler to send em to the scrap yard.
Thank you so much. Was going to buy a used Odyssey this week. The money spent will be critical & cannot be misspent. I’ll be going after a Sienna now. Really appreciate it!! Dodged a huge bullet!
The only mini van I want to drive is the 1996 Toyota Celica
jjmf1222 15 Hahahaha they say they are the best ones
We just bought a Sienna last month and we love it !
Would you recommend 2021 Siena with V4 and eCVT? Is it reliable transmission?
