2021 R-Line owner here. Yes, you can set a steering heavier and sharper without even going into sport mode. However, for a daily driving from point A to B I prefer soft and light steering. It is still sharp if you are on 19" or 20" wheels. Now that I am on 17" wheels for the winter, yeah, it is a bit ever lighter. Also FWD vs AWD makes a huge difference in how car turns as well. So, if you get a chance to test drive a fully loaded one, I suggest you try it. I was skeptical as well. I went from Golf Sportwagen to Tiguan and I was impressed how well Tiguan drives and handles. @@Jimy273 not true. Never I had issue starting the car in a morning or got stranded on a road side in 20 years. Did it have issues? Yes it had like any other brand but mostly those were wear and tear or some sensor died.
@@zedzedski7382 I understand you had a great experience but that’s the case with everyone driving a Volkswagen and rating shows that. I’m just saying compare to reliable brands like Mazda, Honda or Toyota, Volkswagen need to work bit more on good quality of vehicles
@@Jimy273 I wouldn't say Mazda is reliable. It only began to improve after 2013 but pre those years it was just as unreliable as Nissan after it got purchased by Renault in early 2000s. Also, every brand have their good and bad models. Just because one model is a total ass does not mean that the whole brand is like that. VW VR6 and the 2.5 5 cyl engines are one of the most reliable engines. Too bad that every car company is being forced to use now smaller engines with Turbo and that's where everyone starts to have problems. Look at what is happening with Toyota. RAV4 is has just become a disaster: injector problems, fuel pump malfunctions, battery setting on fire the entire car, gearbox issues (for CVT models), rolling over and the list goes on. Tiguans on the other hand had little problems here and there and nothing compared to RAV4. Honda CRV, also has a lot of problems, also fuel pump, injector problems, AC malfunctions, heating not working in cold winter. Also, Honda gave 0 fucks to address some of those issues despite a large amount of customers complaining. But if you are so concerned about VW reliability then get an extended full warranty. It will cover everything for 200 000 km. Unlike some Honda or Toyota, the VW honors warranty service and fix the issues. One of my VW had DSG problem (weird sound coming out of the gearbox). So, VW no questions asked replaced the whole transmission and while the car was in service I was provided with a loaner free of charge. Moreover, their premium warranty covers 24/7 road side assistance that you don't have to pay for. So, get a premium extended warranty and sleep tight at night and enjoy a much smoother ride with a solid build quality where nothing rattles or peels off in the interior of the car on daily basis
Out of all of the SUV's I've driven, the Tiguan definitely feels much more luxurious than most. It's so smooth, the steering wheel feels beautiful in the hand, the audio is superb, it's comfortable. And the adaptive cruise makes me feel like I'm driving a Telsa especially when I'm driving between Ottawa and Toronto! Gotta admit though, I'm not a huge fan of this light interior lol 😆 overall, I love my 2018 highline. Oh and love that it comes with remote start
One thing I’m happy to see is a light interior. When I was younger and from a practical standpoint black is fine but it’s so boring and dull inside, more light colour interiors are welcomed.
Great review as always. Agreed that most of the SUV lineup for VW lack power, it's always "Okay" haha. I have the first gen atlas and I love it, but will probably tune it. Happy holidays to you both and your fam!
Here we get a full on tiguan R (not R line, shares drivetrain from the golf R), I wouldn’t say that lacks power. also the new touareg also not underpowered
This Tiguan looks great inside and out. I’d consider getting one as a replacement for our Touareg TDI, but the lack of a true performance version is a deal breaker. VW should bring the Golf R powertrain in this for the North American market, as it would be an ideal version for people who actually need more room than a Golf R.
I have a Touareg as well. Wouldn’t get rid of it for any other SUV. It’s in a class of its own, really. It’s happy towing 7,000lbs, doing Jeep-embarrassing offroading, high speed cruising, or just commuting. Love it.
@@Gogoterps Yes and no. If it was sold as a Tiguan R, a performance model, it would be different than any Audi. It would likely be priced within the Audi range.
As an owner of a 2018 Tiguan, I agree with you on the review. Tons of room, quality interior and I even have the third row. The power is definitely adequate; however, it would be nicer with a bit more. Nothing that a tune can't take of though. Great review as always!
They did tweaks for 2020, 2021 and 2022 models. So, 2018 and 2019 models are indeed slower and number on acceleration. The 2018 goes 0-100 km/h in 8.4s, while 2020 and up go in 8.0s. Also, the torque comes in earlier so that off the line start issue that was on 2018 and 2019 models is resolved on 2020 and up year models.
My wife has the 2018 as well. It definitely had a lot of weird issues. Power is so low off a stop but is decent as a cruiser and can pick up speed pretty well once you are at like 80-100 kmh. But in the city at red lights, man its sluggish! super jerky and clunky at times as well. Apparently there were some TSBs in NA for fixes on the sluggish acceleration for 2018s but good luck finding a dealer that would actually do it. I tried and no luck. Like someone said, once the 2020's came around they fixed some of these performance issues. According to Motormouth, with this new 2022 model, they refined the transmission and how the engine paired to give better gear shifts and reduce that sluggishness. Still 185hp at the end of the day.
I have 2020 Highline R line pack, great family car . Less power but good on gas in Canadian winter I got 6.7L/100km . Only thing I would complain is too much wind noise... but overall great family car with good tech.
There is a Tiguan R in South African thats got an RS3 engine swap... I cannot get over how perfect that engine is for that SUV. VW dropped the ball not using that engine
I picked this up after my GTI was totaled. Got an all black 2022 SE R-Line. I love it. The power is surely a lot slower than a GTI which is expected but is a little frustrating considering it has the same engine with turbo. Good thing is APR has told me they'll have a tune out soon. Otherwise, I have no complaints. It's a fantastic car and the fact that it has semi-autonomous driving at this price range is fantastic.
Hey Jake, I'm thinking about getting a sel r line Tiguan. The only negative for me was the engine. Did you ever go with the APR Stage 1? If so, how did it turn out and what was the price?
@@lcdcac This is late, but I got the APR plus tune on mine a few days ago, its noticeably quicker, especially in 2nd and 3rd gear. Also, its a lot easier to pass people on the highway too, even with 3 people in the car, which took forever on the stock engine. The gear shifts are way smoother too and not clunky and jerky anymore. The APR plus costed $499 for the tune plus $499 for powertrain warranty.
@@puddingsnaxxx A bit of a tune-noob here, but is this upgrade ECU only? (i.e. no additional parts?) Do you need to change the type of fuel you need to use after? (i.e. go from 87 to 91 or anything?) Does this mean the car wears down faster? (obviously yes - since you're pushing the engine more) - but does that translate to more frequent oil changes? Waiting for our 2024 Tiguan R Line.
Top review and content as usual gentlemen. In South Africa 🇿🇦 we get the Tiguan with the full 220 Hp from the 7.5 GTi engine with DSG and 4 Motion. A pity you guys get downgraded engine 👎
It would be cool if they would actually add a performance version. The cosmetic changes are definitely eye catching, so throwing some extra performance in would create a really compelling package.

We ended up buying a 22 Tiguan R line brand new, since the price of a 21 with a considerable amount of miles (30-40,000) cost the same amount. Around $32,000 USD it was a no brainer to buy a new one, but no sunroof for some reason on almost all new Tiguan R lines…unless you get the SEL R-line. There was an interested credit applied to the window sticker of around $1,800.
Canada needs the real tiguan R not just the R-line. I considered trading my mk7 gti for an suv, but 184hp is disappointing and an sq5 is like $70k…VW would do well with it priced similarly to the golf R. Would tick all the boxes for a ton of people wanting some fun from the “family hauler” 🤷🏻♂️
Here in Australia we have a 162kw version of the Tiguan in a short wheel base and a 235kw soon And ours look so much better, better screen, tail lights, interior, etc
@10:17 That's not lagging. That's motion is known as animation. You can tell because it expands into position. Anyway, it really needs a black edition across the trims. I also wish the offered option captain's chair for the second row, like on the Sorento. One reason that's my top choice ATM.
I'm curious if you put the passenger seat down as far as it goes? My son is 6'2" and he fits beautifully in the Tiguan! No hair brushing on the headliner 😂 That's one of the Tiguan's best features, is the height adjustable passenger seat!
Funny to see a visor test on this one. My wife has the 2021 SE R Line Black edition here in the US and the passenger visor doesn't go back on hers either! When I saw that, I was hoping you guys would review a Tiguan and see it for yourself. I was not disappointed haha.
Great review, thanks! My only complaints with the 2022 Tiguan are the relatively weak engine, the fact that the ambient lighting is not more extensive and reaching towards the back rows, and finally the exhaust pipes not being real! Actually I would also have preferred the white interior to pair with the Platinum Grey Metallic exterior color. Other than that, I think its a great choice in this category.
In Europe this car is sold as the Tiguan Allspace which is a considerably bigger version of the normal Tiguan. And all versions come with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, although the normal size Tiguan can be had with a PHEV drivetrain and a 6-speed dual clutch transmission.
I have a Tiguan 2019, same car basically, I drive with the steering column at the lowest, my seat the highest and my palms rest on top of the steering wheel and it’s perfect view of the gadges.
My partner in crime has been mobbing a 2019 VW Atlas for the last two years. It is quite possibly the best car that we have owned. Performance is solid. It has a very comfortable interior and is sooo smooth to drive. Handles great in deep snow. I get that you are reviewing its baby brother, but they are fairly similar. Worth a look for those curious.

not that light on gas but i like the self parking feature. i know most people don't bother with it but if you take some time to figure out how the algorithm works it makes your life a lot easier in the city. also glad they got rid of the auto hold from previous generation. not a fan of the camera system though. they should have made it so it changes to front camera when you shift from reverse to drive... but instead the thing stays on reverse all the time unless you manually change it.
If the UK can get the Tiguan R badge with the last gen Golf R engine why can't we get it in the US & Canada? (CarWow reviewed it and it's AWESOME) We need more people bitching that we deserve that same engine here!!!
We test drove one of these after test driving a CX-5, Acura RDX, and a Ford Edge and this felt brutally slow. We really liked the room and the Tiguan overall, just needs more power.
I bet you took the cx5 since you are looking for more power it's really a good car that mazda .if you didn't buy yet I suggest you to wait for the new kia Sportage or check the Hyundai Tucson.
Yea I mean the CX-5 and RDX are honestly just a class abpve a Tiguan. Like 80-100 more power/torque so yea I mean theres no way id consoder a Tiguan if I could afford and RDX.
I know this isn’t something straight pipes does but I wish they could review a stage 2 Tiguan…. A normal Tiguan is NOTHING special at all, but a tuned one can hang with scatpacks, SS Camaros, SRT Grand Cherokees and it’s only like $3k in mods and they’re still basically factory reliable.
I wish we could get the Tiguan Hybrid in North America. I think this would be a perfect additon to the Tiguan line. I don't want an ID4 . This would be a great transition to the electric future.
Does support Android auto via the app button. I actually sold my 18 Tiguan for a 19 CX-5 and don't regret it. Tigua has way better tech provided it's not constantly in the shop for warrenty repair, like mine was lol
Did you know that in Germany there are two sizes of the Tiguan and you in Canada (North America) get the in Germany called Tiguan allspace (not translated) that is the bigger size of the two
Gotta admit, I hate how VW makes such handsome looking cars but makes them with completely inadequate power (except the GLI series). I’d really consider VW, but I guess they have distinguish it from Audi. But man, they are def good looking
It really needs more power. Something the Tiguan lineup has been lacking since the beginning. Even tho german vehicles are a bit more preppy due to the tuning and accelerator response but you still feel it.
@@zedzedski7382 Thats why I mention the Germans are overall more preppy but then again you can just drive the Japanese competitor in sport mode 24/7 to get very smilar response.

The only trouble I've had was finding a tire due to its size 🙃
Lol you must be paid by VW 😂😂

@@Jimy273 I'm sure it's always going to be luck of the draw! I know so many people with VW and never had any issues

One thing I’m happy to see is a light interior. When I was younger and from a practical standpoint black is fine but it’s so boring and dull inside, more light colour interiors are welcomed.
Me too. I hate a black hole interior.
Need to start a petition to get the Tiguan R in North America. That version solves the power issue perfectly, such a nice SUV!
Love the tiguan, mine has served me well so far and I plan on keeping it till 150k miles

Love the way exterior looks, and love the way the interior layout looks. Don't like the capacitive buttons, but it all looks really good.
Nobody does. Another fix, where it wasn't broken.
Was this filmed in Mississauga, by the airport?
Love the show...great reviews
This Tiguan looks great inside and out. I’d consider getting one as a replacement for our Touareg TDI, but the lack of a true performance version is a deal breaker. VW should bring the Golf R powertrain in this for the North American market, as it would be an ideal version for people who actually need more room than a Golf R.
I have a Touareg as well. Wouldn’t get rid of it for any other SUV. It’s in a class of its own, really. It’s happy towing 7,000lbs, doing Jeep-embarrassing offroading, high speed cruising, or just commuting. Love it.
But then it’d be competing with the Q3 or maybe even the Q5
@@Gogoterps Yes and no. If it was sold as a Tiguan R, a performance model, it would be different than any Audi. It would likely be priced within the Audi range.
at 8:36 Yuri sums up the reason Volkswagen went for this " low " output 4 cylinder engine.
For this type of SUV,enough is enough 👍
Could you start a segment showing off the key of every car? I’m always curious
As an owner of a 2018 Tiguan, I agree with you on the review. Tons of room, quality interior and I even have the third row. The power is definitely adequate; however, it would be nicer with a bit more. Nothing that a tune can't take of though. Great review as always!
@Capsized Cloud not the most reliable in the segment. But all in all, it's still pretty good.
Tune it
@@guitarking4734 I will be in the very near future...it definitely needs it
They did tweaks for 2020, 2021 and 2022 models.
(i.e. no additional parts?)
Do you need to change the type of fuel you need to use after? (i.e. go from 87 to 91 or anything?)
Does this mean the car wears down faster? (obviously yes - since you're pushing the engine more) - but does that translate to more frequent oil changes?
Waiting for our 2024 Tiguan R Line.
Top review and content as usual gentlemen. In South Africa 🇿🇦 we get the Tiguan with the full 220 Hp from the 7.5 GTi engine with DSG and 4 Motion. A pity you guys get downgraded engine 👎

There is also a Tiguan R, it has the new 320hp engine from the new Golf R. Don't know if it's available worldwide though.

The best looking out of its competition. CX-5 next up after.
Regarding seat comfort: all European OEM tend to install what you call stiff seats. The reason is, that stiff seats have better long range comfort.
It would be cool if they would actually add a performance version. The cosmetic changes are definitely eye catching, so throwing some extra performance in would create a really compelling package.
Similar to how Toyota used to gatekeep AWD on their Lexus sedans, seems like they are gatekeeping performance engines on their Audi SUVs.
In Europe they have a performance version of the Tiguan, the Tiguan R. It has the Golf R engine
Loved the look of it however sat in it and the seats are so uncomfortable. Bought a Q5 Prestige with Bucket seats for the fiance instead and they are so much better. Ive always been an Audi guy however wanted to try to get into the VW world. Anyone else find their seats uncomfortable? Maybe ill reconsider it when its time to replace mine.

Greetings from Puerto Rico @TheStraightPipes. Thank you for making great videos, they help keep me in good spirits through this tough winter season. Yesterday night temp whent all the way down to a chilly 75° 🥶

Every car I've seen on this show will always be better than my 1997 toyota tercel. I've owned this car since I could drive (18 years) and can't afford to get another car at the moment. I'm living vicariously through you guys! Keep up the great content!
Don't worry, every personal car we actually own is heavily used lol
We ended up buying a 22 Tiguan R line brand new, since the price of a 21 with a considerable amount of miles (30-40,000) cost the same amount. Around $32,000 USD it was a no brainer to buy a new one, but no sunroof for some reason on almost all new Tiguan R lines…unless you get the SEL R-line. There was an interested credit applied to the window sticker of around $1,800.
I picked the Tucson Hybrid over the CX-5, RAV4, CRV, Tiguan.
Here in Australia we have a 162kw version of the Tiguan in a short wheel base and a 235kw soon
And ours look so much better, better screen, tail lights, interior, etc
Not to mention the luxury upgrade pack is like 6k, Mazda, Nissan and such will charge you another 10-15k for that.

Time to end the year in a bang
finally a tiguan review on the channel!
Why even put the exhaust cutouts there? Do some other design detail with that space or ya know, keep it body colored?
Great review, thanks! My only complaints with the 2022 Tiguan are the relatively weak engine, the fact that the ambient lighting is not more extensive and reaching towards the back rows, and finally the exhaust pipes not being real! Actually I would also have preferred the white interior to pair with the Platinum Grey Metallic exterior color. Other than that, I think its a great choice in this category.
I have one and I love it so much. Super comfortable and easy to drive.
North America gets the short end of the stick as usual, in Europe and other markets the actual R is available sporting 315 HP and 310 Torque.
And that's why VW isnt a big player here.
The intro beat of this review was unusually hard. At this point I’m just waiting for Jakub to start spitting bars
Yuri squatting there in the passenger seat like a child sitting for the first time in the front 😅
Great review - but what is that music in the opening?! Love it
In Europe this car is sold as the Tiguan Allspace which is a considerably bigger version of the normal Tiguan. And all versions come with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, although the normal size Tiguan can be had with a PHEV drivetrain and a 6-speed dual clutch transmission.
Rocking the Tim Biebs beanie!
I am doubly impressed, Canadians more aware of American territories than Americans themselves! Thank you
I have a Tiguan 2019, same car basically, I drive with the steering column at the lowest, my seat the highest and my palms rest on top of the steering wheel and it’s perfect view of the gadges.
This car actually looks much better in person
Just got one and got it tuned with apr plus.
Now it got 234 hp and 270 torque including power train warranty from apr tuning.

Turks and Caicos annexation by Canada has been discussed over the last 40-50 years but never happened. Would have been a nice tropical piece of Canada.
not that light on gas but i like the self parking feature. i know most people don't bother with it but if you take some time to figure out how the algorithm works it makes your life a lot easier in the city. also glad they got rid of the auto hold from previous generation. not a fan of the camera system though. they should have made it so it changes to front camera when you shift from reverse to drive... but instead the thing stays on reverse all the time unless you manually change it.
Everyone complains about the lack of power, but you can simply do an APR ecu tune to change that.
Greetings from Austin, TX boys! Keep up the good work.

Woohooo! Finally! A review for the Tiguan. 👏

Hello!
Good one to buy if you like taking your car to the mechanic.
You guys have to review the Atlas Cross Sport now
I know this isn’t something straight pipes does but I wish they could review a stage 2 Tiguan….
I don’t like SUVs much but these lowered on a nice set of wheels look pretty darn good

Great review, the Tiguan is the best for me!
Does support Android auto via the app button. I actually sold my 18 Tiguan for a 19 CX-5 and don't regret it. Tigua has way better tech provided it's not constantly in the shop for warrenty repair, like mine was lol
Also the power of the bigger engine cx-5 is perfect amount of power to weight ratio for a daily beater.

Drove around a 2021 model as a company car for nearly a year and I was surprised how terrible the fuel economy was.
If the Tiguan has more power than it’ll just ruin Audi Q5 sales. I’ll still pick Tiguan in the class tho.
