Aeroporto de Cristiano Ronaldo is not a normal international airport, it is number 9 among the 10 most dangerous airports in the world. It is located directly on the slope of a cliff with dangerous shear winds that make landings difficult and challenging.
In contrast to other airports, only specially trained pilots with additional training are allowed to land here.
This is due to the fact, that no instrument landing system (ILS) can be used here due to the topography and therefore the landing approach and landing can only take place on sight.
Landing from the sea on RWY 23 involves a spectacular, steep 180-degree approach turn, which many arriving passengers have already noticed.
The nice thing about this airport is that you can experience flight operations not only from the visitor terrace, but also from the many spots around the airport.
