Madeira is very beautiful island - I can recommend it to everyone. But our second landing there was really something. Thankfully when I first went to Madeira in 1991 I didn't know about the airport's reputation. The second time I didn't know too much either. On my second trip the flight out was delayed by over an hour I think because of a technical issue, possibly to do with the brakes? It was an old BA (or GB airways?) 737 with the little engines.
Are you the guy on the right or the left? Sorry I assume there are correct terms to address to you guys but I know nothing about flying but I like this kind of videos.
Capt. Cláudio, you’re a very skilled and technical pilot. I am Portuguese but live in the USA. I saw the report they did on you back when you were flying the A310. Are you still flying for SATA? What routes do you fly?
@G E T R E K T Actually it's not. All pilots must show what psychologists call "appropriate arousal" - not so chilled that they fail to manage or control the situation, but not so uptight that they overreact to things.
3 weeks ago I went to Madeira and now I could see how the pilots made a lending. The lending was soft and secure thanks to our Croatia Airlines pilots !!
Awesome. I just got back from FNC: arrived and departed very smoothly via runway 23. Is it just the (manual) arrival on runway 05 that's really the problem? How often is runway 23 used?

For your information, the airport is on the edge of the coast at sea level and quickly rises approximately 250 feet in height, which is why the GPWS count drops suddenly, because from one second to the next it goes from being 350 feet above sea level. height at ground and sea level at the same time at airport runway level, which causes the aircraft to lose meters of approach to the ground, but the aircraft does not lose altitude itself, but what changes is the ground level, In this case it passes over the ocean, which is the minimum level, the famous sea level, and suddenly, the level rises almost 250 feet high and therefore the aircraft activates its GPWS at 300, 200, 50, 40 , etc. I hope you understand and that also when you see the radar which, Weather is SET, you realize that the weather is very adverse therefore this landing, saying RETARD four times, was, SMOOTH and excellently performed, a round of applause to the PM and PF (Pilot Monitoring and Pilot Flight).
Awesome video, thanks for sharing! Would you be okay with me featuring this in my series Weekly Dose of Aviation? Of course you will be credited both in the video and in the description.

Its normal where there is traffic
