With a turn on approach that was far from a simple landing. The professionalism of you and the captain made it look easy. In complete awe. Keep up the good work.
@@DutchPilotGirl it is. You can do it from two spots. One outside of airport and second one from is located on third floor inside of the airport itself.
Nice video, i could literally see my house from the cockpit as I live a few kms from the runway. Hope you enjoyed our island and come back many times, maybe landing the plane yourself some day.
As someone living on this island who tends to travel a bit, I have always wondered what the view from the pilot was at landing times, this cleared it out thank you!
Great Island lived there 2004/5 My under standing back then you had to have 2 senior Captains to pilot the aircraft. Used to take a helicopter to the Island next to Maderia. Which was a old NASA emergency strip Porto Santo.
I have landed there several times always interesting, I remember as a kid in the 70's landing on the old runway in a TAP 727 felt like the pilot had the breaks on before the wheels touched the ground luggage fell out of the overheads people screaming....pilot was already turning around while we were still slowing down fun stuff.....
That old runway was a postage stamp. You can still see the old one - which is already after the first extension. It's still very visible if you know what to look for. It ends basically after the buildings. 😮 Talk about tiny. Even nowadays the pilots prioritize just stopping the plane over stopping it very smoothly.
the runway was extended in 2000 to 2 781, partially over pillars, the terminals were rebuilt to what we have today.... I believe the single accident there was with the TAP Boeing 727-200 in 1977 with 131 deceased and 33 injured. A memorial was built where the plane exploded
@@TheGabrielPT You wouldn't believe how clever Madeirians are to spend EU money to improve and to make this beautiful island more modern. Respect - honestly! I've been there 3 times so far and before I die I'm planning another 50 :-)
Driving away from the airport, one can see how amazing this runway is. From the highway, it resembles an elevated city highway perched on a forest of concrete pillars at least 50 metres high. On take-off, there is no soaring climb into the air, just a continuing gentle climb as the wheels leave the ground and the rocky coastline replaces it under the wings.
Ok 2 things. 1. Such a beautiful view out the windshield, thank you for sharing. 2. I'm not some dolt but am I the only one still enamored and amazed by aviation. The pilots who fly to Funchal deserve much respect. I was on a plane as a passenger and when it landed some of passengers started clapping. I asked one why are people clapping and they said because they got on the ground safely. Madeira is a nice island and i would like to go again.

Hi Sonu, the Zakynthos video is still in production, only have one camera angle so not sure if people find it as interesting as the newer format featuring at least 2 angles. But I will continue to work on it :) Have a great weekend !
Very cool to see this approach and landing from the cockpit in real life. I've done it a few times in MSFS 2020 and it's certainly challenging. Thanks for sharing!
One of the most incredible landings I've made in my life... a few months after the only plane crash this airport had (in 1977). It's a 'must' for anyone who likes these themes! God speed!
Hey girl, been to Madeira once but we had the opposite end approach, Stil spectacular though. Levada walks are great as are the glass walkway and the valley of the nuns.
That approach is a rarity and my favourite. Avoids the U-turn. But it's always unexpected. There you are, looking at the small villages and then... landed. Like... already?
Masterful and professional approach and landing! Very beautiful!! I am virtually familiar with this airport. I tried to land there on an Airbus A320 (in the cockpit of an air trainer, not in real aircraft!), and it was very, very difficult! My instructor told me that even he does not have permission to land in Madeira, and it is one of the most difficult airports in Europe. Thank you for this video!
Looking as beautiful as ever Michelle. Find your videos very interesting. Gives an insight to what goes on in the front end. Looking forward to more of the same, hopefully. Stay well. Mick🇬🇧
Thanks! I would also love to upload on a weekly basis.. just don't have the time unfortunately.. I am expanding the team though so might be able to at least do 1 video per month minimum..
Another terrific video Michelle, thanks. I've flown to Funchal twice in recent years, landing on that same runway. Neither were as pleasant as your arival. The first time was best described as alarming with gusting and windshear so the aircraft was slewing from side to side quite violently on the run in. We were expecting a 'go around', but eventually the pilot just dropped it quite heavily as soon as he was over the runway. Wish you'd been driving 🤣. The take off is also interesting with dropping the starboard wing and banking right as soon as airborne. In fairness the pilot had warned us that this would happen, necessary due to the terrain ahead. Love all your videos which are so well produced, edited and so much information on screen....thanks again.
I'm from Madeira. I've landed there a few times. As long as the plane stops safely, it can hit the track hard. I don't care for the bump, that's why we have the seatbelts. That being said, I must say I never had a bad experience. The pilots flying to Madeira usually know what they are doing.
There are tons of videos of challenging approaches in adverse conditions. Hair raising stuff. And they usually nail it. Even if the plane dances a little bit.
Perfect! I've flown in to Madeira as a passenger a few times, and always knew it was a difficult one. I didn't know it was a 'Captain-only' procedure though. Interesting! The approach and landing I have always found totally awesome is the one into Innsbruck. Amazing when you have jagged mountain peaks on both sides as you descend down to the threshold.
@@gamma_dablam not a question of difficulty but there is certainly no ILS on this airport, because it is expensive. Also the crew must be qualified to autoland, and naturally the aircraft must have its two autopilots available etc.

@@DutchPilotGirl Thank you, I will! We have lots of pilots living in our apartment complex, all of them very young and they are all so friendly and willing to give me lots of advice on how my son should plan a possible career in aviation.
Robb, the Americans are saying that pilot training courses are valuable these days due to the imminent needs to hire competent new pilots. The problem about using this airport as a recruiting tool is that she is absolutely right in saying it is far more difficult than normal approaches. Unfortunately it is the only "major" airport serving a politically sensitive and vital outpost of the Portugalese nation.
I was in Madeira in 2016. It's wonderful island. My father was born there. I was impressed with part of the runway above the sea, it´s a great engineering feat.
@@tomvalentine4928 That's strange. I flew there in 1978 or '79 from Porto, Portugal (therefore long before the runway was extended), and don't remember any stopover in Porto Santo for refueling on the way back to the mainland.
@@miguelcoelho3877 I was flying to Manchester, UK, so would presumably have needed more than twice the amount of fuel needed for a flight to Porto. We were told the plane could not take off with enough fuel for a flight to the UK from the old Funchal airstrip so we had a short flight to Porto Santo which had a longer airfield and allowed us to take on enough fuel to fly back to England. Did it two consecutive years .
@@tomvalentine4928 Haha, yes, that makes sense. I'm just not sure if in those days in the late '70s, there were any direct flights from the UK to Madeira without a stopover in Lisbon first. Edit: flights, not flies, oopsy...
@@miguelcoelho3877 I don't know about the '70s but I can confirm that we went in 1982 ( my first ever flight) and 1983 with Brittania Airways direct from Manchester to Funchal
I remember landing at the old airport 40 years ago. Even hairier than that. Ask any really old colleagues. Take off weight severly restricted. Rolling turn and away then a landing at Porto Santo to refuel. Those were the days 😊
@@gamma_dablam I thought it was nearear to Funchal. As it was 40+ years ago my memory may be faulty. When I visited last September I was amazed at the new roads, bridges and general expansion of Funchal. I wont wait another 40 years!
You know, that runway used to be much shorter. It was prolonged in the 90's I think. Before that, planes had to apply strong brakes and reversers in order to stop in time. I remember people would start applauding inside the plane, when it came to a halt. Nowadays is a much easier landing.....
Incredible . Airline Pilots are amazing , skilled and calm , controlled and collected . Cannot imagine how that landing would be in bad weather , uugghh , just the thought . Thanks for sharing , one word comes to mind ……Majestic .
They do not land in bad weather, planes usually get diverted, they simply will not risk it. TAP pilots are more likely to try it because they are more used to landing in Madeira.
@@catarinarosario9867 True. Growing up in Madeira, the most common news was diverting planes with bad weather. But indead, some pilots will succeed in doing difficult landings. It can depend on a specific company guidelines or on a captain's decision.
I have sadly developed a fear of flying over the past 10 years. Before that i had lived in the USA, Spain, Greece and UK and flew regularly. This may sound a bit strange but watching this video has actually made me feel like i want to try to board a plane again. I'm not sure why the video made me feel better about it, maybe seeing how calm and relaxed the crew are and that its the not being able to see ahead syndrome that gets to me. Thank you.
You must be sure pilots not recording video in time of piloting. Health and safety stuff have to know what I'm talking about. Be safe and know we're on one bot.
Very cool...thanks again. Got to land here in a B737-300 simulator...they failed the flight director so I had to land it like a 172. Got it done...and they treated me different after that. Scared my wife though...and she never went back.
Much respect to the pilots! The responsibility they carry on their shoulders with over 100 lives in their hands makes them as skilled in their profession as any surgeon. All I can say is *Wow!*
Great video, I love the 'sight seeing U-turn' before lining up for landing; seeing our own hotel at the coast made it very personal. It has been one of our most beautiful holidays even out of season (September) Thanks for posting this and making it all look so easy.
I love your approach videos, they are so well edited and full of information as well as downright beautiful. Would you consider uploading a narrated version where you explain all the technical details you put on screen?
It was great. How you all went onto final...and just went right in to the field. Loved seeing and hearing what was going on in the cockpit. You make it look so easy but I know you went through a lot of training to get to where you are.
Thank you Michelle for sharing your aviation journeys. I know Funchal is in the top 10 (if not top 5) of challenging airports and good to see this one from the front seat pov 👍🏼 Still want to hear the ATC comms, but great video and editing too, always good quality from you. Take care and wishing safe flying. All best ❤
I just found your channel... I literally cannot believe the quality of the video, the editing, your skill, your beauty, its ridiculous. Well done at life, seriously, you are winning!
I have been to Madeira a few times and never had any landing problems but a few of my friends have been on flights where the plane has had to make a couple of approaches, so they had to have a couple of pops ie, large brandies when they landed as it was a bit scary.
Very informative videos well done so the average person can see and understand what pilots go through to get us all safely to our destinations. Thank you for all that you do.
lmfao no pilot actually watches this. There is something called flight school for professionals, but your brain just goes to youtube and thinks you are some kind of expert.
Loved this approach! You make it look so easy. What a beautiful view for an airport!!!! Thanks for the pro editing (I know it takes a lot of work) and for sharing with us!
I went there and we had so many go arounds that we had to land on an island near by and refuel and allow everyone to calm down. We then landed sideways. It was so terrifying that I cannot get on another plane.
What a great video, I love how you put the procedures and what is going on etc up on screen with tags to the controls/runway etc… VERY informative and interesting. Please don’t change this type of content 😊
Nice to have this view. In real life I've seen this from a passenger seat once. Also it's a very good island to walk if you're getting to old for much climbing. Walking along the "levada's" (water canals for irrigation) is also very nice and not really challenging...this on contrary to an isle as La Palma. No , it's not suitable for rollator or wheel chair, those paths....)
Michelle, so happy for you to have such a successful and exciting aviation career, and really enjoy your videos. Do you ever pass through Gibraltar? If so, that might be an interesting approach to view. Thanks and greetings from the USA!
Unfortunately Gibraltar is probably the only place in Europe we have any sway over, not even sure the Gibraltarians like us much either! Its' only the British based airlines that fly in - unfortunately no Dutch carriers serve it.
Last year I flew from Gatwick to Funchal. 30 knot crosswinds at Funchal developed en route and we were diverted to Port Santo, where we sat for two hours. The gusts didn't abate and we flew all the way back to Gatwick, arriving around midnight and a two-hour wait for a fairly pointless hotel room, only to get up again at 5am for a 7am rematch.
Sadly, happens a lot with Madeira. Sometimes, it's possible to brave the winds. Other times... well, lives are more important than to attempt something. If they close the airport, it's because it was necessary.
I remember visiting Ponta Delgada in the 1980’s. The passengers would all hold their Rosaries during landing. The breaking was so severe everything on the floor would be catapulted down the aircraft. The terminal building was like a wooden shed. I recall that the runway had a cliff at the end of it - hence the breaking. It was a strange place. The toilets in the bars were overflowing and soaking into the carpets in the bar. They had a festival going on. The girls were crawling around the square on their knees and the illuminations looked lethal. Thank goodness we had our RN trials ship on which we slept.
That's Azores, I believe. The other group of Portuguese islands. Probably also an interesting landing. The connection to the smaller islands is with smaller planes. Weather is usually challenging. As for the rosaries and girls on their knees. Yeahhh, us Portuguese folks are still on the very religious side.
@@mffmoniz2948 absolutely correct. It would have been in the early 80’s. I felt quite sorry for the Portuguese girls as it all seemed rather barbaric. It would be interesting to know how the island has changed. I was on the UK MoD trials ship RMAS Newton. The other island had a huge US airbase.
Out of all of the Boeing jets, the 737 is by far my most favorite. Sitting at the wings is especially comfy for folks who are worried about turbulence!

I was in Madeira in 2016. It's wonderful island. My father was born there. I was impressed with part of the runway above the sea, it´s a great engineering feat.
I flew there twice on the old runway, so short we could not take off with a full load of fuel and had to hop to Porto Santo to tank up.
Fantastic. Thanks for the ride!
I remember landing at the old airport 40 years ago. Even hairier than that. Ask any really old colleagues.
Take off weight severly restricted. Rolling turn and away then a landing at Porto Santo to refuel. Those were the days 😊
Before the table runway extension 😮
@@gamma_dablam I thought it was nearear to Funchal. As it was 40+ years ago my memory may be faulty. When I visited last September I was amazed at the new roads, bridges and general expansion of Funchal.
I wont wait another 40 years!
Challenging indeed. You made it fun. Great vid!
You know, that runway used to be much shorter. It was prolonged in the 90's I think. Before that, planes had to apply strong brakes and reversers in order to stop in time. I remember people would start applauding inside the plane, when it came to a halt. Nowadays is a much easier landing.....
It was extended in the 80's after the tragedy of 1977.
greetings from a portoguese in switzerland.
always nice to see my country in new videos when far away from home.
thank you.

I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MICHELLE! I am into aviation aswell!
Thanks Alvaro!
Thank you Michelle >I enjoy your videos
I love your approach videos, they are so well edited and full of information as well as downright beautiful.
Would you consider uploading a narrated version where you explain all the technical details you put on screen?
I might do that in the future :)
really cool! dank je wel!
It was great.
How you all went onto final...and just went right in to the field.
Loved seeing and hearing what was going on in the cockpit.
You make it look so easy but I know you went through a lot of training to get to where you are.
Glad to see you flying again. Continued success with your career.
Thank you Michelle for sharing your aviation journeys. I know Funchal is in the top 10 (if not top 5) of challenging airports and good to see this one from the front seat pov 👍🏼
Still want to hear the ATC comms, but great video and editing too, always good quality from you. Take care and wishing safe flying. All best ❤
Great no audio atc interruptions
I was just in Madeira on a cruise last month - what a beautiful island!!
Just got back myself 2 weeks ago. Amazing! I think the 23 approach is under appreciated breath taking beauty
Difficult for landing with sloping runway - deceptive methinks...wind shear will always be a factor here,,great vid....
Very informative videos well done so the average person can see and understand what pilots go through to get us all safely to our destinations. Thank you for all that you do.
lmfao no pilot actually watches this. There is something called flight school for professionals, but your brain just goes to youtube and thinks you are some kind of expert.
Another fantastic Landing. Thank you so much for creating an sharing these fantastic Videos.
Loved this approach! You make it look so easy. What a beautiful view for an airport!!!! Thanks for the pro editing (I know it takes a lot of work) and for sharing with us!
Really like annotations during the video, these little details are making it much better :)
Quando seu avião é pilotado por um anjo, a sensação de segurança fica maior, rsrs
Muuuuh
Great footage Michelle, thanks for sharing. I just have to try this one myself :-) ...Well on fs2020 that is ;-)
I went there and we had so many go arounds that we had to land on an island near by and refuel and allow everyone to calm down. We then landed sideways. It was so terrifying that I cannot get on another plane.
Wow
I understand but you were obviously in good hands.
Not all airports are like that. And Madeira isn't always like that. Don't give up on travelling.
I think it is awesome of the cockpit veiws of the differant countries and airports you go too and the history that you give
What a great video, I love how you put the procedures and what is going on etc up on screen with tags to the controls/runway etc… VERY informative and interesting. Please don’t change this type of content 😊
You are great Pilot God bless you always
Nice to have this view. In real life I've seen this from a passenger seat once.
Also it's a very good island to walk if you're getting to old for much climbing. Walking along the "levada's" (water canals for irrigation) is also very nice and not really challenging...this on contrary to an isle as La Palma.
No , it's not suitable for rollator or wheel chair, those paths....)
My lovely Island, thanks for showing our Airport
Michelle, so happy for you to have such a successful and exciting aviation career, and really enjoy your videos. Do you ever pass through Gibraltar? If so, that might be an interesting approach to view. Thanks and greetings from the USA!
i love gibraltar...the country that two seas meet!!!)
Unfortunately Gibraltar is probably the only place in Europe we have any sway over, not even sure the Gibraltarians like us much either! Its' only the British based airlines that fly in - unfortunately no Dutch carriers serve it.
@@M20RUM i talk about land, not people, but anyways!!! :)

Great video. Well done.

Out of all of the Boeing jets, the 737 is by far my most favorite. Sitting at the wings is especially comfy for folks who are worried about turbulence!
