Hi I was just wondering when your in the setup menu to calibrate the PS5/Series X HDR or HGIG with any LG OLED do you calibrate the console with it turned on or off on the TV. This has been for me a bit confusing, some people say to calibrate your consoles with DTM/HGIG being turned on the TV and others say to turn it off. Sometimes I notice both looking a little dark and dim and the colors look a little washed out, probably because I've set up DTM or HGIG wrong.
Always, always calibrate your LG OLED using HGiG. Calibrating your LG with DTM would be entirely ineffective. Once youve calibrated with HGiG, you could switch over to DTM when playing a game. I made a pretty in depth video on this topic, if you are interested: ua-cam.com/video/z17PS8N0cCQ/v-deo.html
While sometimes I struggle to get used to hgig darkness as I’m new to oled , I much much prefer the detail in highlights that hgig presveres , dtm blows out highlight details , like the sun in the windows on miles morales , also at night time dtm makes night time look too bright and washed out in some games
you’re right , i used to like DTM but when i noticed how much better low lit areas in games or movies looked with DTM off or HGIG on for games i stopped using DTM. DTM will completely change the “mood” of low lit areas or night time scenes.
If you want punchiness and vibrance, HDR tone mapping on is the way to go. If you want accuracy, HGiG is that way to go. You could also try using dynamic contrast to enhance the brightness.
I have no idea about these subjects but played along and noticed that I preferred HGIG, is that something that I can change on my LG Oled? Or is it perhaps on my PS5 or Xbox series X? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
youll be fine, just make sure you take reasonable measures to protect your LG OLED. Use pixel shift, make sure logo luminance adjustment is set to at least low, and if you're using your OLED as a monitor, use a dark background/themes and make sure screen saver is set to 3 minutes or so.
Long post. Still struggling with my settings, year and a half later. All attempts(except Dirt) I've choose are wrong, but i think that's just how my tv is, everything is backwards. Im using LG Nanocell79(cannot afford expensive one), and im more comfortable to play with HGIG than anything else, but it's not perfect. Here is my experience, its a bit tricky to explain: Everything off: looks so washed out and dim, and in some cases, all white colours seems on the same level, loosing details, making some images to be just white/greyish. DTM on: looks good, but biggest downside is that dark scene seems to lower my tv lighting, making everything hard to see, including subtitles. As if with this setting, whole brightness goes down for some reason, back and forth, very distracting. HGIG on: reverse situation, everything looks good, ui is bright af, unlike two options above. But light sources(only daylight) in the game became hard to watch, literally blinding you. Yet i choose this, cuz it looks richer than first option, and doesn't lower brightest like second. I'd rather be blinded by sun, than being unable to see what is going on in the darker scenes(ingame or cutscenes). Plus, im still struggling with PS5 hdr setting. In HGIG, the grey squares can be seen up to 26 tics, and for some reason, they sometimes disappear, starting from 10, yet i can see outline of them, while inside is pure white. It doesn't feel right, I understand that my tv is not good, so how can it can go up to 26 tics?.... And occasional borders with white insides bothering me. My dark level is at lowest. Black Level i put on limited, with auto(its always full) it starts to hurt eyes, contrast is just too brutal... I'm using PC mode, power eco is off, light and contrast is 100, brightness and colour at 50, warm2. Perhaps something should be changed in games settings itself? This is where im lost, when going in game hdr settings, i don't really understand those numbers.
sounds like it could be various limitations of the TV itself that are causing your issues. I would certainly recommend using HGiG if you can, as that is the more accurate representation of HDR. The issue, HGiG can and IS often on the dim side - esp if a TV's peak brightness is limited. Also, I believe that TV uses HDMI 2.0B ports, so you would certainly want to set your RGB range to limited, or sometimes its known as "low." When calibrating the PS5 HDR, calibrate exactly per this video: www.bing.com/videos/search?q=how+to+calibrate+HDR+on+ps5&view=detail&mid=9890FC70ADAE2B6B8B6D9890FC70ADAE2B6B8B6D&FORM=VIRE The video is exhaustive and particularly informative when it comes to HDR calibration.
They are something burn issues between DTM and HGIG with 100 OLED Light ? Can I save use DTM on 100light for Warzone ? (Because I see more in dark area with DTM ) Sry for English :)
I recommend dtm off if you are concerned. But I play loads of games with maxed out settings. Really driving this tv HARD. IN WARZONE daytime playing Oled light 100 Contrast 100 Brightness 55 Colour 80 Sharpness 40 Dtm ON
Lol…there really no right answer between DTM and HGiG…it’s all game specific, and depends on how the HDR is implemented. Hell…even some native HGiG games aren’t implemented well. But overall, HGiG is the clear winner, and should be used majority of the time imo. DTM has it’s use case, and is necessary for certain games tho, for sure. Btw.. 1st clip is DTM left…HGiG right…. 2nd is DTM right, HGiG left… 3rd is DTM left, HGiG right 4th is DTM left, HGiG right 5th is DTM right, HGiG right From what I was seeing, ratchet and clank was the only really tricky one. But I finally could tell, by the colors difference. I know DTM pops more in that game.
@Bzake Minimal? I see blown out highlights with DTM….then if use HGiG, it will results in clearly less clipping, and more detail resolved. Tho it’s not perfect, I will say….especially with majority of HDR gaming implementations, that aren’t very precise in their sliders. I just kinda find the CX to be pushing white too hard, no matter what tho, especially once you start pushing luminance. Idk…it’s just something that’s always bugged me. It’s gotten a little better over updates tho. The grid effect also bugs me, in bright HDR highlights. DTM just exaggerates this. HDR seems to be all about compromising tho. It’s whatever you prefer. There’s definitely games that require using DTM tho, unless you want to look at hard clipped highlights. The flip side to that, is over brightened mid tones, which personally I don’t mind, as long as things aren’t too, too bright, causing exaggerated noise and artifacts within the source itself.
So what I noticed is that calibrating for hgig and the switching back to dtm you get blown out highlights and an over brightened image. If you're going to use dtm rather leave the hdr adjust values at default, do not even adjust the black scale for dtm on ps5 because you'll end up with crushed blacks and dark scenes will look unpleasantly dark.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 this has made the picture awesome! Thank you thank you thank you. Only thing is when I do this and click the calibration app, all of the checkerboards are back. Is that ok?
@@valps5gaming579 yeah, the reason you want to calibrate with HGiG is because that's the most accurate setting from a tone mapping standpoint. When you engage DTM, that tone mapping solution will change making the checkerboards look different. But, by at least using HGiG to calibrate, you start with an accurate baseline.

And yes, you can tell the difference between most of the clips in this video. That's evidenced by the fact that most people in the comment section down below had the right answers.
Thank you for the Video! I have the LG BX 55 and when I do HDR adjust on my Ps5 (after game mode and Hgig on), at the first screen I need to almost go to highest possible setting because the sun image persists. It first becomes very light, then I only see the outlines of the circle, then it becomes a little more visible and almost at the end of the adjustment range (highest value) it becomes barely invisible again. Anyone else have this issue and knows a solution?
You need to turn on HGIG in the tone mapping settings on the tv, with dynamic tone mapping on or off both are doing some tone mapping, hence why the sun does not disappear. Set to HGIG and no tone mapping will be occuring so you will be able to set the hdr screens correctly (correct settings for your TV are first 2 screens 14 clicks from bottom, third screen exact bottom).
Well on the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 you can calibrate your HDR setting, and on both of those modes will kill make it really overly bright and stupid dark in dark sense. Look up the (Samsung S95B OLED TV review | The Good. The Bad. Should You Buy?) on Digital Tends. It really shows what happens when you follow the calibration settings on the Xbox or Playstation. Next time, please show the exact same clip side by side, would make it alot easier. I got them all right 😄 HGIG always makes shadow detail much darker, and highlights stands out as being brighter. All in all a much more dynamic image full of contrast. DTM is just a washed out overbrightened mess in comparison.
I swear, there's always someone who will complain about something. Never figgin fails. lol Anyway, depends on the game. I usually use HGiG as well, but certain games can be a bit flat with it.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 no HGIG does the exact same thing everytime. Regardless of which game is active, it's completely static. *With HGIG* - dark areas become darker -APL is reduced (average picture luminanse) -Highlights is the only thing that isn't reduced As a result - with HGIG every highlight will stand in greater contrast to the general luminanse level. It therefore adds a percieved greater depth to the image, that now appears more dynamic. With DTM on the contrary, the APL is greatly increased, compressing the dynamic, in the sense that everything is much brighter, therefore highlights can't pop, they won't appear to stand in contrast to the general level of luminanse, therefore being perceived as being dimmer. In conclusion, HGIG provides a much more correct and also Vivid HDR experience as compared to DTM, which simply compresses and overbrightens the image, completely deviating from the EOTF PQ curve. Assuming you have a worthy reference monitor which has been professionally measured and calibrated to D65 White point, 2,2 gamma log, 65.000k color temperature etc, you should share this experience aswell.
@@Lasse3 Highlights can still pop in DTM, despite APL generally being higher. You act as though DTM just blows everything out and makes a truly hideous image. Sometimes, this is true, but not always. Again, HGiG is the more "Accurate" way to go, though not all games are even programmed for HGiG or even have in-game sliders to effectively hone in peak brightness. Ultimately, if HGiG wasn't sometimes too "dark" for some people, then DTM would have never been invented, now would it have? No need trying to tell people how to use their TV. If they like DTM, they like DTM.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 splendid you're actually well wersed in this stuff. Why HGIG can make dark scenes in some games completely black, is a mystery to me. You're right, that If the creators, were in fact color-grading with HGIG active themself, we would not experience this. The only game that really appears to be made with HGIG in mind, is Ratchet and Clank rift apart. But there is no such thing as an "HGIG rdy game" Alot of people are confused about what HGIG is.. Long story short, every TV has different DTM, and the creators should make the games so it would look perfect without DTM. Ofcourse this would require the creators to adjust peak brightness to match your exact TV. So we need a peak brightness slider, to make HDR work. But DTM is garbage, I have yet to see a game that looks better with DTM. "Highlights can still pop" you say. Yes to a certain extent, but nothing like HGIG, also this is about much more than just highlights, DTM acts as a conpresser, leaving too much of the image in the 50% nits area (mid-tones) The depth is lost, the dynamism, the fidelity. But yeah it really makes me scratch my head why HGIG goes so hard on reducing the low level brightness, to the point of crushing blacks it sometimes appears. This is happening both for QLED and OLED, it's really not a TV specific phenomena, I have a professionally calibrated Neo-Qled, I also experience the "too dark HGIG" But I'll take that anyday over DTM, 😜 I'm not telling you what to do, I'm just stating some facts and some opinions to go along.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 Not 100% sure but it must be Rachet and clank then. That one is a tricky one. In person is definitely way more easier to tell. A UA-cam video is not the best way to do this comparison. is fun though.

I made a pretty in depth video on this topic, if you are interested: ua-cam.com/video/z17PS8N0cCQ/v-deo.html
@@steadychaosproductions3376 Oh thank you for that, now I understand, I will definitely watch the video in the link. I really appreciate the feedback.
DTM will completely change the “mood” of low lit areas or night time scenes.
hello good evening i bought lg oled c1 which modem should stay hdr on or hgig seems lifeless
It is something you can change on your oled. Which oled model do you have?
Does the lg c1 take care of screen burn-in?
youll be fine, just make sure you take reasonable measures to protect your LG OLED.
Here is my experience, its a bit tricky to explain:
Everything off: looks so washed out and dim, and in some cases, all white colours seems on the same level, loosing details, making some images to be just white/greyish.
Also, I believe that TV uses HDMI 2.0B ports, so you would certainly want to set your RGB range to limited, or sometimes its known as "low."
When calibrating the PS5 HDR, calibrate exactly per this video: www.bing.com/videos/search?q=how+to+calibrate+HDR+on+ps5&view=detail&mid=9890FC70ADAE2B6B8B6D9890FC70ADAE2B6B8B6D&FORM=VIRE
The video is exhaustive and particularly informative when it comes to HDR calibration.
They are something burn issues between DTM and HGIG with 100 OLED Light ? Can I save use DTM on 100light for Warzone ? (Because I see more in dark area with DTM ) Sry for English :)
yeah, anytime you use HDR you should max out pixel brightness and contrast, whether youre using HGiG or DTM, it doesnt matter.
I recommend dtm off if you are concerned.
But I play loads of games with maxed out settings. Really driving this tv HARD.
IN WARZONE daytime playing
Oled light 100
Contrast 100
Brightness 55
Colour 80
Sharpness 40
Dtm ON
Lol…there really no right answer between DTM and HGiG…it’s all game specific, and depends on how the HDR is implemented. Hell…even some native HGiG games aren’t implemented well. But overall, HGiG is the clear winner, and should be used majority of the time imo. DTM has it’s use case, and is necessary for certain games tho, for sure.
Btw..
1st clip is DTM left…HGiG right….
2nd is DTM right, HGiG left…
3rd is DTM left, HGiG right
4th is DTM left, HGiG right
5th is DTM right, HGiG right
From what I was seeing, ratchet and clank was the only really tricky one. But I finally could tell, by the colors difference. I know DTM pops more in that game.
Close, but your answers are not 100% correct.
And I agree, in general, HGiG is prb preferred for accuracy sake, but it can certainly vary game by game.
Hey, just a question: regardless whether I use HGIG or DTM, how should the HDR settings on PS5 being calibrated? With DTM on or with HGIG on?
always calibrate using hgig for 100% accuracy, then, if you wish, you can switch over to dynamic tone mapping on.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 which hdr calibration on PS5 for HGIG how man clicks lol?
@@steadychaosproductions3376 using HGIG on C2 for PS5
@@MrStrictlyOLED i made a video on the topic if you are interested. Try searching for HGiG on my channel.
I find HGIG is the best for most games, but dark/nighttime games, TM can help a lot.
If you want to just set it and leave it (not change back and forth for every game) would you recommend HGIG or DTM?
DTM.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 do I do the HDR calibration in HGIG and then turn on DTM or calibrate in DTM?
@@valps5gaming579 always calibrate in HGiG then you can turn DTM on.
How do we calibrate an adjust . feature?
HGIG IN PS5
I have a pretty in depth tutorial on how to calibrate your PS4/5's HDR with HGiG: ua-cam.com/video/z17PS8N0cCQ/v-deo.html
hgig in dark room. DTM in bright room. Its as easy as that. The only option I wouldnt recommend is DTM and HGIG "off"
Last of us : HGIG Left - Right DTM
Ratchet : HGIG Left - Right DTM
Spider : DTM Left - Right HGIG
Dirt 2 : HGIG Left - Right DTM
RE8 : HGIG Left - Right DTM
Watching it on an SDR video makes it a bit hard to tell them apart 😪
There is a lot of crucial hidden details that an SDR curve cannot catch so we can only guess based oh the overall contrast instead 😢
Its very challenging to tell them apart, for sure. I made the video and then watched it after and even I was having a hard time.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 yeah it's much easier in real life when you sit in front of the TV.
@@Lasse3 debateable.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 as compared to watch your video side by side comparison on my phone on UA-cam.
Hell yes, watching the game in HDR for real on the actual TV hooked up to the PS5 is much better for comparison between HGIG and DTM.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 It's not. Just pay attention to brightness changes.
Brightness changes in scene or scene to scene based on camera angle = DTM On
Brightness doesn't change no matter what is on screen or how you turn camera = HGIG
3:33 Do you notice how awkwardly bright it gets on left one after you drop down?
To big of a variable with this test. We are viewing on different displays. Even if I was watching on my LG CX it still wouldn't be the same as what you see. Each panel can reflect differently.
This video isn't even coded in hdr. So the point of this video is?
bro, take a breath, have some fun.
Everyone says how starkly different HGiG and DTM are, this is testing that theory. Of course, its not a perfect experiment, but this is UA-cam, not mythbusters.
And yes, you can tell the difference between most of the clips in this video. That's evidenced by the fact that most people in the comment section down below had the right answers.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 Mythbusters!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Anyone else have this issue and knows a solution?
make sure your black level is correct. Both should be matching.
Honestly I am stumped on which one is which. I cant tell the difference honestly.
Indeed...I made the video and I had to squint to differentiate the two.
Its crazy.
It's all about personal preference. As gamers let's just enjoy our games
Agree, but its still fun to talk about.
Honestly not having them on is the best in my opinion.
interesting, ive not noticed that problem.
Thank you sir!! 👍👍
DTM looks better in bright scenes but alot worse in dark scenes .
Yeah, thats a pretty common refrain from people.
Full House for me, and even more proof, I know working HGiG better than Vincent Teoh :) G1 has broken HGiG BTW, which we are arguing over lol.
it has broken HGiG? haha
@@steadychaosproductions3376 Seems like it's only the G1, was very dim (came from a CX) I knew right away, randomly autocal cured it, which 100% confirmed the problem. Others are coming forward too now....but a guy who has a 40 gamerscore clearly ain't gonna know better than someone with 90K, when it comes to HGiG 😂
Nice video. I like your opinions because you don't drink Vincent Teohs kool aid and suddenly pretend like HGIG is amazing and DTM is trash.
I play with DTM. Day time or bright scenes in games look absolutely stunning and pop with it on.
I do think HGIG is much better for night scenes and dark moody games, but if I had to choose between amazing pop during day time scenes and proper black levels during night scenes ill pick the former.
It sucks we cant have a clear winner, but anyone that can play a game like ratchet and clank rift apart and can say HGIG looks better in that game needs their eyes examined or are just out right lying
Yeah, the YT community says you need to use HGiG, 0 sharpness, 50 color, warm 2 yadda yadda yadda. Sure thats accurate, but I tell people to use whatever looks better to them.
Next time, please show the exact same clip side by side, would make it alot easier.
I got them all right 😄
HGIG always makes shadow detail much darker, and highlights stands out as being brighter. All in all a much more dynamic image full of contrast.
DTM is just a washed out overbrightened mess in comparison.
I swear, there's always someone who will complain about something. Never figgin fails. lol
Anyway, depends on the game. I usually use HGiG as well, but certain games can be a bit flat with it.
@@steadychaosproductions3376 no HGIG does the exact same thing everytime. Regardless of which game is active, it's completely static.
*With HGIG*
- dark areas become darker
-APL is reduced (average picture luminanse)
-Highlights is the only thing that isn't reduced
As a result - with HGIG every highlight will stand in greater contrast to the general luminanse level.
Assuming you have a worthy reference monitor which has been professionally measured and calibrated to D65 White point, 2,2 gamma log, 65.000k color temperature etc,
you should share this experience aswell.
But there is no such thing as an "HGIG rdy game"
Alot of people are confused about what HGIG is..
Yes to a certain extent, but nothing like HGIG, also this is about much more than just highlights, DTM acts as a conpresser, leaving too much of the image in the 50% nits area (mid-tones)
The depth is lost, the dynamism, the fidelity.
But yeah it really makes me scratch my head why HGIG goes so hard on reducing the low level brightness, to the point of crushing blacks it sometimes appears.
This is happening both for QLED and OLED, it's really not a TV specific phenomena, I have a professionally calibrated Neo-Qled, I also experience the "too dark HGIG"
But I'll take that anyday over DTM, 😜 I'm not telling you what to do, I'm just stating some facts and some opinions to go along.
If DTM looks washed out to you, something is wrong with your settings
