I got all but Dirt. Dirt looked very similar. I was trying to pick out definition in the clouds around curves, but that was tough. The only game I'm preferring to use Tone Mapping over HGiG on is MLB the Show on S/X. The uniforms and stadiums really pop on sunny days and just looks a bit more amazing than HGiG. Other than that I set it to HGiG and forget it.

So what I noticed is that calibrating for hgig and the switching back to dtm you get blown out highlights and an over brightened image. If you're going to use dtm rather leave the hdr adjust values at default, do not even adjust the black scale for dtm on ps5 because you'll end up with crushed blacks and dark scenes will look unpleasantly dark.

Hi I was just wondering when your in the setup menu to calibrate the PS5/Series X HDR or HGIG with any LG OLED do you calibrate the console with it turned on or off on the TV. This has been for me a bit confusing, some people say to calibrate your consoles with DTM/HGIG being turned on the TV and others say to turn it off. Sometimes I notice both looking a little dark and dim and the colors look a little washed out, probably because I've set up DTM or HGIG wrong.

@@Adamantaimai HGIG has a base level brightness Which is static.
Huds will overall be dimmer .
With DTM on, scenes that do not push high peak nits, it will tonemap the whole image to brighten up ALSO brightening all hud elements ofcourse.
I agree. Ggig is a more stable image as it tracks a nice curve.
Sometimes dtm on can completely change a scenes look in a negative way.
      For example:
If the content is mastered way above 800 nits. Dtm will try to preserve highlight detail while dimming the rest of the image. Making bright scenes with sunny clouds look like overcast.
But as a positive You can also use DTM to your advantage in daylight viewing
As it wil generally brighten up the whole image. So for example setting the peak hdr brightness way lower in a game, the tv doesn't have to curve to 800 nits anymore and is capable of tonemapping darker and mid brightness scenes way brighter because the of lack of 800 nit specular highlights.
But note that often small highlights will clip with DTM on.
My takeaway is just use whatever looks best for you in any given situation.

Lol if you can’t see the difference between HGiG and DTM off…you might wanna get your eyes checked, or maybe learn how to access HDR. No shade either…just you really might wanna learn, bc it’ll make your experience better, if you actually understand. There is definitely a difference. Overall tonal range, APL, mid tones, etc, between HGiG and DTM off should be exactly the same…the difference only being in the specular highlights, and how they’re mapped. If set up correctly, with a properly implemented HDR game…HGiG will almost always maintain more specular highlight detail than DTM. I mean even in a game like RDR2…which isn’t a HDR masterpiece..,the difference between HGiG and DTM off, is clear.
All DTM does, is interject fake brightness into the mix. It boosts the mid tones, and APL in dark scenes, however dims the image, to maintain specular highlight, in high APL scenes. That’s the biggest issue with DTM imo. They should of taken Sony’s approach, and respected the APL…
Btw…DTM off, doesn’t mean tone mapping, in case you didn’t know. HGiG means you’ve disabled all tone mapping on the set, and are letting the source control tone mapping, to prevent double tone mapping. DTM off, is still performing tone mapping, up to around 4,000 nits. However, DTM off, shouldn’t be used for any games. At least none I’ve come across. DTM on or HGiG, is the only way to play. With more of an emphasis on HGiG, as it’s the better mode, I’m most circumstances. Sorry you can’t see the difference tho. But you better look again there brother…
One last thing, to try and make this a little easier to follow…HGiG and DTM off, both follow the PQ EOTF curve accurately until roll off, or hard clip. DTM on, does not, and will artificially boost that EOTF curve, causing overtraking/over brightening. Most of the time you can see this effect on screen, when the color begin to dilute and wash out to white, easier, with DTM on. HGiG almost always maintain more color purity/volume as well. But it really all depends on the game, how the HDR is implemented, and if the game has a peak brightness slider, etc.

  • @ye-rochawkins5432
    @ye-rochawkins5432 3 роки тому +3

Lol…there really no right answer between DTM and HGiG…it’s all game specific, and depends on how the HDR is implemented. Hell…even some native HGiG games aren’t implemented well. But overall, HGiG is the clear winner, and should be used majority of the time imo. DTM has it’s use case, and is necessary for certain games tho, for sure.
    Btw..
    1st clip is DTM left…HGiG right….
2nd is DTM right, HGiG left…
3rd is DTM left, HGiG right
4th is DTM left, HGiG right
5th is DTM right, HGiG right
From what I was seeing, ratchet and clank was the only really tricky one. But I finally could tell, by the colors difference. I know DTM pops more in that game.

@Bzake Minimal? I see blown out highlights with DTM….then if use HGiG, it will results in clearly less clipping, and more detail resolved. Tho it’s not perfect, I will say….especially with majority of HDR gaming implementations, that aren’t very precise in their sliders. I just kinda find the CX to be pushing white too hard, no matter what tho, especially once you start pushing luminance. Idk…it’s just something that’s always bugged me. It’s gotten a little better over updates tho. The grid effect also bugs me, in bright HDR highlights. DTM just exaggerates this. HDR seems to be all about compromising tho. It’s whatever you prefer.
There’s definitely games that require using DTM tho, unless you want to look at hard clipped highlights. The flip side to that, is over brightened mid tones, which personally I don’t mind, as long as things aren’t too, too bright, causing exaggerated noise and artifacts within the source itself.

Long post. Still struggling with my settings, year and a half later. All attempts(except Dirt) I've choose are wrong, but i think that's just how my tv is, everything is backwards.
Im using LG Nanocell79(cannot afford expensive one), and im more comfortable to play with HGIG than anything else, but it's not perfect. Here is my experience, its a bit tricky to explain:
Everything off: looks so washed out and dim, and in some cases, all white colours seems on the same level, loosing details, making some images to be just white/greyish.
DTM on: looks good, but biggest downside is that dark scene seems to lower my tv lighting, making everything hard to see, including subtitles. As if with this setting, whole brightness goes down for some reason, back and forth, very distracting.
HGIG on: reverse situation, everything looks good, ui is bright af, unlike two options above. But light sources(only daylight) in the game became hard to watch, literally blinding you. Yet i choose this, cuz it looks richer than first option, and doesn't lower brightest like second. I'd rather be blinded by sun, than being unable to see what is going on in the darker scenes(ingame or cutscenes).
Plus, im still struggling with PS5 hdr setting. In HGIG, the grey squares can be seen up to 26 tics, and for some reason, they sometimes disappear, starting from 10, yet i can see outline of them, while inside is pure white. It doesn't feel right, I understand that my tv is not good, so how can it can go up to 26 tics?.... And occasional borders with white insides bothering me. My dark level is at lowest. Black Level i put on limited, with auto(its always full) it starts to hurt eyes, contrast is just too brutal... I'm using PC mode, power eco is off, light and contrast is 100, brightness and colour at 50, warm2.
Perhaps something should be changed in games settings itself? This is where im lost, when going in game hdr settings, i don't really understand those numbers.

sounds like it could be various limitations of the TV itself that are causing your issues.
I would certainly recommend using HGiG if you can, as that is the more accurate representation of HDR. The issue, HGiG can and IS often on the dim side - esp if a TV's peak brightness is limited.
Also, I believe that TV uses HDMI 2.0B ports, so you would certainly want to set your RGB range to limited, or sometimes its known as "low."
When calibrating the PS5 HDR, calibrate exactly per this video: www.bing.com/videos/search?q=how+to+calibrate+HDR+on+ps5&view=detail&mid=9890FC70ADAE2B6B8B6D9890FC70ADAE2B6B8B6D&FORM=VIRE

It therefore adds a percieved greater depth to the image, that now appears more dynamic.
With DTM on the contrary, the APL is greatly increased, compressing the dynamic, in the sense that everything is much brighter, therefore highlights can't pop, they won't appear to stand in contrast to the general level of luminanse, therefore being perceived as being dimmer.
In conclusion, HGIG provides a much more correct and also Vivid HDR experience as compared to DTM, which simply compresses and overbrightens the image, completely deviating from the EOTF PQ curve.
Assuming you have a worthy reference monitor which has been professionally measured and calibrated to D65 White point, 2,2 gamma log, 65.000k color temperature etc,
you should share this experience aswell.

@@Lasse3 Highlights can still pop in DTM, despite APL generally being higher. You act as though DTM just blows everything out and makes a truly hideous image. Sometimes, this is true, but not always. Again, HGiG is the more "Accurate" way to go, though not all games are even programmed for HGiG or even have in-game sliders to effectively hone in peak brightness.
Ultimately, if HGiG wasn't sometimes too "dark" for some people, then DTM would have never been invented, now would it have?
No need trying to tell people how to use their TV. If they like DTM, they like DTM.

@@steadychaosproductions3376 splendid you're actually well wersed in this stuff.
Why HGIG can make dark scenes in some games completely black, is a mystery to me.
You're right, that If the creators, were in fact color-grading with HGIG active themself, we would not experience this.
The only game that really appears to be made with HGIG in mind, is Ratchet and Clank rift apart.
But there is no such thing as an "HGIG rdy game"
Alot of people are confused about what HGIG is..
Long story short, every TV has different DTM, and the creators should make the games so it would look perfect without DTM.
Ofcourse this would require the creators to adjust peak brightness to match your exact TV.
So we need a peak brightness slider, to make HDR work. But DTM is garbage, I have yet to see a game that looks better with DTM.
"Highlights can still pop" you say.
Yes to a certain extent, but nothing like HGIG, also this is about much more than just highlights, DTM acts as a conpresser, leaving too much of the image in the 50% nits area (mid-tones)
The depth is lost, the dynamism, the fidelity.
But yeah it really makes me scratch my head why HGIG goes so hard on reducing the low level brightness, to the point of crushing blacks it sometimes appears.
This is happening both for QLED and OLED, it's really not a TV specific phenomena, I have a professionally calibrated Neo-Qled, I also experience the "too dark HGIG"
But I'll take that anyday over DTM, 😜 I'm not telling you what to do, I'm just stating some facts and some opinions to go along.

Well on the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 you can calibrate your HDR setting, and on both of those modes will kill make it really overly bright and stupid dark in dark sense. Look up the (Samsung S95B OLED TV review | The Good. The Bad. Should You Buy?) on Digital Tends. It really shows what happens when you follow the calibration settings on the Xbox or Playstation. Honestly not having them on is the best in my opinion.

Nice video. I like your opinions because you don't drink Vincent Teohs kool aid and suddenly pretend like HGIG is amazing and DTM is trash.
I play with DTM. Day time or bright scenes in games look absolutely stunning and pop with it on.
I do think HGIG is much better for night scenes and dark moody games, but if I had to choose between amazing pop during day time scenes and proper black levels during night scenes ill pick the former.
It sucks we cant have a clear winner, but anyone that can play a game like ratchet and clank rift apart and can say HGIG looks better in that game needs their eyes examined or are just out right lying

Thank you for the Video! I have the LG BX 55 and when I do HDR adjust on my Ps5 (after game mode and Hgig on), at the first screen I need to almost go to highest possible setting because the sun image persists. It first becomes very light, then I only see the outlines of the circle, then it becomes a little more visible and almost at the end of the adjustment range (highest value) it becomes barely invisible again. Anyone else have this issue and knows a solution?

    • @calamitylam
      @calamitylam 2 роки тому

You need to turn on HGIG in the tone mapping settings on the tv, with dynamic tone mapping on or off both are doing some tone mapping, hence why the sun does not disappear. Set to HGIG and no tone mapping will be occuring so you will be able to set the hdr screens correctly (correct settings for your TV are first 2 screens 14 clicks from bottom, third screen exact bottom).
