This is an extremely informative video. I had initially decided that DTM on is the best when comparing still images, but the way that it will completely change the brightness of the scene depending on what you're looking at is something that I've been noticing a lot in game. The conclusion I'm drawing is that neither HGIG or DTM on are perfect solutions and I'm not really going to get a true HDR experience without a 4000+ nits display.
@GamingTech, Thanks for your work. Imho your explanations about HGIG vs DTM is one of the best on Internet. Great job! Long time I (like most people) like the DTM on for it's brigtness and vibrancy, but now I prefer Game Optimizer with HGIG. With calibrated Playstation5 (or XBox) HDR it looks nearly perfect now. Just a shame that not a lot of Games support HGIG nativly.
Why do i feel like i was just watching the new regarding the forecast of the weather? You will make a very good Meteorologist! Should you ever wish to change your profession. Thanks for explaining what HDR Tone Mapping is, you made it very easy for me to comprehend!
This is by far best video explaining/demonstrating worst part of DTM On. I always hated that constantly changing brightness. Even DTM Off is better (I use it for movies only).
That's exactly why I dislike the option even if it makes the screen look better and bright but the constant change in brightness is so noticeable it's honestly a shame
HGiG is generally more accurate as it forces the TV to closely follow the EOTF curve with a hard clip at max brightness. DTM doesnt follow a strict EOTF curve, but rather attempts to generate a vibrant, contrasty, colorful picture. If someone is an absolute purist and doesnt want their settings to ever deviate, then sure, HGiG is your thing. However, HGiG tends to be quite dark, and in dark games like Demon's Souls, I found it sometimes unusable because everything was just so dark. Ultimately, whether one uses HGiG or DTM is a matter of preference, and I feel like the debate between the two has been beaten to death.
I find that DTM increases color banding in some games, especially Demons Souls (like in world 5-2). Have you ever tried HGIG with Dynamic Contrast turned on?
@@SpookyApparition Interesting, I've not noticed any color banding and I put about 45 hours into Demon's Souls with DTM on. I did notice that HGiG made things unbearably dark, though (at least on some levels). You can always jack up the brightness, but then things get sorta washed out.
Best answer, this is not right/wrong, it is completely up to preference. HGIG felt too dark for me too even in spiderman miles morales. However i can totally understand if other people want a more accurate picture.
What I do is keep it on hgig and adjust the in game picture settings like luminance an paper white and looks just as good as DTM on. With no brightness adjustments like he shows in the video that DTM on does. But not all games you’re able to adjust luminance and paper white. Older games probably benefit from DTM on most likely.
Top review you have got yourself a new sub. I got myself a LG NanoCell 2021 smart tv 42 inch 4k it works wonders for my PS5 that's all I could efford at the time money well spent.
Ich habe mal etwas auf reddit gelesen und nicht nur ich empfinde das anscheinend so. Das Bild bei hgig wird nicht nur dunkler, die Farben sind auch nicht mehr so lebhaft wie bei dtm on. Was sagst du zu diesem Thema Markus?
Thank you very much !! You helped me man, even HDTVtest dindt explains so good things about this staff.. i didnt realise that DTM it is the same that HGiG..
Your commercial placement is something to be studied using the great videoographers of the world🤣 bring back your little funny skits people love that stuff.. your so pro now jees
What about DTM ON or OFF for gaming HDR tv that don't have hgig? Are you enabling it? I know it comes down to preference but I would like to hear your opinion on this please:)
Just keep it on hgig and adjust the in game picture settings. Most games now a days you can adjust the paper white and luminance and it will be just as bright as DTM on. Also calibrate the Xbox with hgig on.
If you do not have HGIG then I'd keep DTM on. Just set the peak brightness in games to a value that is close to your TV's advertised peak brightness or use something sensible like 1000 nits as a target. Ignore the calibration test images, they do not work with DTM on. This way you avoid the game thinking it can push 4000 nits into screen which causes a lot of brightness fluctuations as the DTM tries to compress those absurd nit values down to something that the TV can actually display.
What about DTM ON or OFF for regular HDR content (Movies/TV)? Are you enabling it? I know it comes down to preference but I would like to hear your opinion on this please:)
In your TLOU2 example when you've moving the camera, you should at least mention that the game is using Eye Adaptation effects, meaning the game itself also has an effect where it increases or decreases the exposure of the image based on whether or not you're looking at the sky. However, this effect happens much faster than the DTM adjustment that you're pointing out, but still I think it's worth mentioning so that nobody is confused as to what you're referring to.
What if my tv doesn't have the option for HGIG? Would DTM off still give me a more accurate image? The hdr on my tv isn't very good and most sites recommend turning it on in that case but it seems to make a huge difference in the tone of scenes. With DTM off clouds seem to clip and blend into each other more while DTM makes it look more like real clouds.
Hey friend, i use a LG TV UP7500 with about max 350nits. Would you recommend using HGIG? Some games are waaay to dark, like assassins creed mirage, so i need to turn dtm on. Should i keep changing between both? I play on xbox series x and the hdr was configured with HGIG on
In Samsung Q80B should you enable or disable HDR tone mapping option of Game HDR which optimises HGIG brightness or should it be off in game mode? Will enabling it cause a bit of black crush or is it better to enable this option in game mode? I am playing God of War Ragnarok and don't know whether I should use the TV option of HGIG HDR game tone mapping
I just have it off its to dependent on what your playing so when your quick resumeing games and it looks good on 1 game but then to bright on the other 1 ..... its to much messing around... plus it doesn't make a massive difference that much
What if you don't have HGiG? Having it off makes bright areas too bright but having tone mapping on means everything is to dark it looks almost no different to non-hdr content!
Please make another video about vertical banding in lg cx. It’s not too bad when I do the 5% grayscale in my tv. But I notice it in a lot of dark scenes in games. Like for example when I play cyberpunk the area out side v’s apartment in the building at night I can sometimes see it on the walls if it’s dark. And sometimes it became very noticeable if the scene is dark and hazy
Do you already have the latest update on the LG Cx? This should make the picture extremely dark when playing games with Hdr! 20% darker than before. Can you confirm it?
