Ronnie James Dio - ISOLATED VOCALS - Rainbow In The Dark - Vocal Analysis and Tutorial
Have you ever wanted to take a deeper look at how Ronnie James Dio created one of the greatest, most legendary vocals of all time?
In this video I'm going to show how Dio sang "Rainbow In The Dark" as we look at the isolated vocal track, line by line and then dive into how it was actually recorded.
I'll also show how to add effect to Dio's vocals to achieve that similar sound and then I'll do my own version with the same effects and we'll finish by toggling back and forth between the two so you can hear how closely they sound.

Great video Ken, I was fortunate to watch Ronnie perform from the front of the stage and he was absolutely amazing. I was extremely fortunate to spend some time with him afterwards and I can't stress enough about how genuine, humble and just a sweet human being he was God bless him. 🙏🤘

12 years without the legendary Ronnie James Dio . Hearing you singing made me remember Dio, it made me cry with longing and emotion.
What is amazing to me is he did this on tour for 300 days a year. If I tried that, my voice wouldn't last an hour.

Dio was the embodiment of tiny but mighty. Beautiful and powerful voice, the best in metal.
I recently discovered a rocking 1960 R&B song by LaVern Baker titled "Voodoo Voodoo". Her voice reminds me of Ronnie's. He covered several R&B and soul songs in the late '50s and early '60s, among them "Shout", "Ooh Poo Pah Doo", and "What'd I Say". This influence would show up in later performances when he sang soulful runs with great agility.

He was short just 5' 4 so he made up for his height with his larger than life voice ..🙏🏻🖤🙏🏻 Blessings

I don't think I've ever heard Dio's voice completely ragged out. Even when he was ill during the Heaven and Hell tour he sounded amazing.

For the producer geeks out there, it is important to mention that this isolated track is going thru a compressor (Not the kind of vocal compression Ken teaches, but an audio effect making the vocals sit a bit tighter within the overall mix)

I love this series. Dude, Ken, you're the man. I love the way you break down vocals, there just isn't anybody better. I have to get your course. I've been singing for 25 years, but I was trained by an opera singer who really hated rock music, so she never taught me all those little secrets. I figured out a lot on my own, but it's nice to hear you verify some of the things I've already learned. I was considering doing a cover/tab video for Rainbow in the Dark, and, since I replay everything when I do a cover, including vocals, this tutorial is going to come in so handy.
I guess I just wanted to say thanks man. I can tell just by listening to you that you love people and that you're always trying to help them be better musicians and that's something I aspire to myself, and greatly admire in others.

This is one of my favorite metal songs of all time, rippin' guitar solo too! I was on a motorcycle trip last year, and right as I approached the first curve of an absolutely epic mountain road in Nevada, the song shuffle on my Harley stereo kicked in and the opening power chord of 'Rainbow in the Dark' blared out. It was one of those zen moments in life, just pristine, and I'll never forget it. Speed limits might have been exceeded in those curves. :)

What makes Dio's voice superior to most who try to cover him, is that behind all that growling, you can hear that pure unstrained beautiful tone. Which most great singers have. I feel in some ways the carriage is being put before the horse here. If I were to teach Dio, I would first teach the studrnt how to sing just as powerful without adding any of the growls.
Ronnie was soooo operatic ....precise annunciation........I think Mr. Dios vocal range was a touch higher natively than Kens.

I have been a HUGE Ronnie James Dio fan since 1976. He still easily blows most vocalists out of the solar system to this day. Ken Tamplin does an amazing job covering Dio in this video.

Been playing bass several years. For a long time, I never had anything between my bass & amp except a cord. I like vocals the same way. Dio & yourself can easily pull it off. Not all singers can. When effects are added, it makes it twice as good. You do a fantastic job with Dio's songs! Dio will always be the GOAT! Thanks so much for the video Ken!

I have been learning dio and singing for a while and I have been struggling a lot with losing my voice then this doubler effect always confuses me if I'm on point. Wow!! That’s impressive! You sing great! You can do all the songs I bet….to sing like the legendary DIO? My favorite singer/songwriter?! Geez…..Plus I didn’t know that DIO used a doubler on the chorus… it sounds larger than life..never heard his isolated vocal tracks though. I like how you explain the techniques used in the singing..I know it’s hard to sing that way. There is so much going on in that piece….just that one line. Takes a lot of practice.

Yes,he mentioned this in an interview that he almost took a razorblade to the part of the tape with this song since he found it to popy. The other members of the band talked him out of it though, wich afterwards he was gratefull that they did but he still felt that it was a popy song.
