Great video Ken, I was fortunate to watch Ronnie perform from the front of the stage and he was absolutely amazing. I was extremely fortunate to spend some time with him afterwards and I can't stress enough about how genuine, humble and just a sweet human being he was God bless him. 🙏🤘
I love your psychedelic t-shirts!! And, MAN, you just took all of my favorite singers to analyse, to study them, and to bring to us so amazing elements of learning and building amazing vocals!!! Thank you! Nowadays I'm finally feeling I'm able to sing some stuff, but I'm following your videos and lessons since, at least, 13 years ago!! So, THANK YOU SO MUCH, Ken, for EVERYTHING!!! And, until the day, the most difficult song I think to learn and sing, it's not Dio, it's not even Dickinson, but Tamplins: Straight between the eyes!!! Thank you for building a such amazing legacy for humanity! Love, Peace, Work, and Perseverance!
I appreciate you explaining to us the techniques and effects used by these vocalists (and engineers!), so much passes unnoticed by the untrained ear 👍🏻
Ken you're awesome! That doubling and room reverb technique REALLY gave that vocal SPACE! Man you can hear just how much bleeding from his phones the mic picks up!
Ronnie was a brilliant singer and songwriter and storyteller and musician who was also a brilliant lyricist... Ronnie was the real deal, his lyrics can absolutely scratch your soul and his vocals are so transparent...
I recently discovered a rocking 1960 R&B song by LaVern Baker titled "Voodoo Voodoo". Her voice reminds me of Ronnie's. He covered several R&B and soul songs in the late '50s and early '60s, among them "Shout", "Ooh Poo Pah Doo", and "What'd I Say". This influence would show up in later performances when he sang soulful runs with great agility.
Wow! Legendary! Another great powerful singer. And of course if it is coming from this channel the information is an absolute GOLD. Can’t wait for the next one.
This was a few years ago so you may have found this out since. He actually nearly cut up the original tape of this track because he disliked it, he was stopped by someone. Thankfully 😅
Dio was a church choir singer when he was young. That's why he didn't have to take lessions. He was amazing. Really.. I thought that his voice was fuller. That "doubler" thing is magic! 😆
Ken awesome Job i really am enjoying this series of analysis, please do the analysis on Cornell, Axl Rose, and Glennnnnnnnnn Hughes cant ever get enough of Glenn
I love this series. Dude, Ken, you're the man. I love the way you break down vocals, there just isn't anybody better. I have to get your course. I've been singing for 25 years, but I was trained by an opera singer who really hated rock music, so she never taught me all those little secrets. I figured out a lot on my own, but it's nice to hear you verify some of the things I've already learned. I was considering doing a cover/tab video for Rainbow in the Dark, and, since I replay everything when I do a cover, including vocals, this tutorial is going to come in so handy. I guess I just wanted to say thanks man. I can tell just by listening to you that you love people and that you're always trying to help them be better musicians and that's something I aspire to myself, and greatly admire in others.
Amazing job here, Ken. I am following your channel since last year (I guess) and I must say that THIS IS THE TRUE VOCAL LESSON, when you just split it up a vocal track and teach us lots of things. But I must say: That natural drive on Dio's voice is unique. He was legendary.
I'm really enjoying this series, Ken! You show all your techniques by actually demonstrating yourself. That's the difference between you and so many others. I appreciate that!
This is great, Ken. Love this breakdown / "how-it's-done" series, especially Dio as he has been my favourite singer for decades and the one that really made me want to sing. When I first got into singing, I always longed for a singing teacher who would show exactly how someone like Dio actually sings as he does! And now it's happened as we have you - thanks!
I love these videos Ken. Your voice and your singing sound amazing to me. I don't have a good voice but it doesn't stop me from trying. I look forward to learning more. Thank you.
This is one of my favorite metal songs of all time, rippin' guitar solo too! I was on a motorcycle trip last year, and right as I approached the first curve of an absolutely epic mountain road in Nevada, the song shuffle on my Harley stereo kicked in and the opening power chord of 'Rainbow in the Dark' blared out. It was one of those zen moments in life, just pristine, and I'll never forget it. Speed limits might have been exceeded in those curves. :)
He was a diminutive, demonic Elf from the depths of Hell with a voice that could shake the heavens and reduce mountains to rubble!! Plus he was a very nice guy! RIP RJD!
You always publish your videos timely! Strangely enough, I happen to be tackling the very issues you address in this one. Rest assured I'm doing this with proper training and teaching. Still, you are the lighthouse guiding my journey into singing: thank you so much, Ken!
@@kentamplin I do, but it's no wonder :-) You teach us the key components of good singing technique: any singing issue will have to relate to at least one of them... Can't wait to put my hands on your course!
Hey Ken! Please do one for me. That would be Eric Adams from Manowar! Thanks for taking the time to analyze the greatest singers of our time and sharing your knowledge with younger singers. You are definitely contributing to the "singer community". Cheers and stay healthy!
Wow - what a fantastic breakdown of this song. The more I learn about music, the more I understand why some songs/bands span generations while others just fade away. I always thought Ronny was better than most, but had no idea why. Thanks so much!
I have been learning dio and singing for a while and I have been struggling a lot with losing my voice then this doubler effect always confuses me if I'm on point. Ken is like my Guru from the very first time, thank you Ken for all your efforts in these free videos, once I'm able I'll buy that course too!
Ken, first of all thanks for your channel which is a pure jewel who evreyone who is interested in vocals. Even if i'm not a singer (or maybe a beginner very shy !) I really apperciate how you analyse vocals on isolated tracks. That's so efficient and giving so much information. Your analysis is always very clear, and god, when you show us how "they" done, we can see that you are a very fu**** good singer !! Greetings from france were i have a lot of fun with your works ! Thanks warmly ;) You rock Guy !! 🤘
For the producer geeks out there, it is important to mention that this isolated track is going thru a compressor (Not the kind of vocal compression Ken teaches, but an audio effect making the vocals sit a bit tighter within the overall mix)
Great video, Ken! Ronnie didn't want this song to be in the album, since he tought it was too commercial. What an amazing tune. Is the high voice in the chorus harmony using the same technique used to sing AC/DC? Thanks!
What makes Dio's voice superior to most who try to cover him, is that behind all that growling, you can hear that pure unstrained beautiful tone. Which most great singers have. I feel in some ways the carriage is being put before the horse here. If I were to teach Dio, I would first teach the studrnt how to sing just as powerful without adding any of the growls.
Lot to learn from isolated vocals, Ronnie James Dio amazing rock singer but Ken your very close to his style with your own nuances e.g. like the way you hold out the note on "found" with vibrato awesome!!!
Been playing bass several years. For a long time, I never had anything between my bass & amp except a cord. I like vocals the same way. Dio & yourself can easily pull it off. Not all singers can. When effects are added, it makes it twice as good. You do a fantastic job with Dio's songs! Dio will always be the GOAT! Thanks so much for the video Ken! RIP Ronnie.....
undoubtedly “Dio” he is already a legend, ken.!!!!. your videos are very professional and you are also a great singer, I would like to know if you would ask to analyze the voice of Joey Tempest in songs like Tomorrow or Carrie. Thanks 🙏
