After failing a lot of times, subscribe Liepe's Lessons, and take some basis before coming back to this video... :D
Happy to see some Dio on this channel. Would love to see a full breakdown of his vocal style and characteristics. Otherwise, great job as always, Chris.
You totally got me after Dio and Rob. Was wow! after notification and didn't wait a second to click. First like, then watch and it is really wow! I don't know about Dio's influences but I am sure Rob mentioned Plant as one of his influences and you have that Plant-ish base. Didn't expect to hear you sounding like Dio or Rob but you revealed some tips about warming up which is tremendous for heavy metal singing + mixing + your voice sounds so unique backed by heavy metal sound \,,/ You rock, Chris!!!!
I watched Matt Heafy's vocal lesson with Ron Anderson, and Anderson suggested what you said, as well: Before trying to hit the high note, place it with the falsetto first. If two legendary vocal teachers tell me the same thing, I'm doin' it!
this makes so much sense to me.... good closure in head first and than chest and mix after. Thank you very much. And the siren during the head voice workout of the song?! Youre a genius
Chris, first time I have to respectfully, not completely agree. These singers are masters at some skills not covered with just these components. I believe (especially regarding Dio) the underlying core component is Classical, operatic, open throat technique and the ability to manage high levels of subglottic air pressure. Their breath capacity and breath management is strongly developed. Their throat shapes (vowel sounds) are finely tuned and they are significantly more T/A dominant vocalists. At times, they are not thinning out as much as we think.
Thanks! I agree with you completely! Especially in the case of Dio. This "thinning" technique and dynamic budgeting from head to mix has saved me so many times though... especially in a live situation when I'm trying to keep up with guys like Dio, Delp and some of these other awesomely developed singers!
@@chrisliepe I understand. Myself, at times, I chose that intensely difficult, harder, more tiring way, purposely, and over years, it gets more manageable. The tone that develops is extremely satisfying and diverse. I respect you highly.
What impresses me about Dio, is his chest voice range almost unbelievable compared to most vocalists, he sang his whole life much more with his chest voice than with his well developed mixed chest voice and I know a lot well differentiate; He sings clean highs for the band Rainbow, you realize he sings with his chest from the moment he sustains fully open vowels like "á", "ó", "é" and "í" ; and within what you study in vocal physiology, it is impossible to sing completely open vowels in mixed chest voice for example, from the moment you start mixing with the head voice, the vowels start to close and compress more and more the sound sounds like "an", "on", "in" and "en". His performance in this song Straight through the heart is enticing and in my view very technically complex: ua-cam.com/video/00-Ti_XhPKA/v-deo.html
I think genetic it's a thing too (maybe lenght of vocal cords), because singers like Dio, or Jorn Lande for example have a great low raspy voice also in very high range.
I believe I heard a low tenor talking about it being baritones and tenors that make the high notes the most believe it or not. The thicker vocal cords make solid strong sounding notes (instead of airy high notes) when trained to coordinate well then the range comes from flexibility/elasticity of vocal cords.
Damn, it's impressive to see you going "hell break loose" with your high registers and then hear you talk normally right after. Lol Props for mentioning Ian Thornley, a name you don't hear often on these voice topics!
I will be patiently waiting for a video on Jim Grey of Caligula’s Horse. Definitely my favorite vocalist. His voice in the chorus of Undergrowth is easily the most beautiful and emotional singing ive ever heard, even beating out Jeff Buckley
I've been practicing some brendon urie songs recently and this is super helpful... his head voice is so natural and full sounding, I'd love to see you break down a second song of his some time!
Thanks for sharing the video, as always... Now, you talked as well about chord closure, or vocal closure. Could you make a video on this topic? When I start to rise the pitch, not even a lot, air starts to be heard... Also another one about dynamics, rising and lowering the volume without altering, as less as possible, the pitch. Thanks. If possible, or maybe comment about these things in the videos. Whatever it's easier for you. P.S. About the last point, maybe that's directly related to mixing...
Excellent coaching as always Chris - it definitely helps with good diaphragm support - and chord closure. Will be practising this in the car and really belting it! Any chance you could do a video on vince Neil from Motley crue - he seemed to do a lot of head voice and and pure head voice too.
Chris I swear you read my mind. My band was considering covering Stand up and Shout by Dio and im the singer so this is gonna be a good vid I bet, could you do something on maybe Sebastian Bach, Don Dokken or David Lee Roth?

Sounds more like Primal Fear and Alterbridge than Dio. Those guys aren't even in the same tier of singer as Dio, Maiden or Priest. Halford used to get tired and blow his voice out all the time. You can tell because he would first lose his mix, then start clamping down harder and bending over at the waist to hit high notes. That is a classic sign of a tired voice.
Listening on Spotify 'Do your Worst' by Rival sons and it got me startled... I thought the singer was Chris :-) I had to check... It's not... name is Jay Buchanan. Surprising similarity in tone and vibrato and distortion.
Do you ever discuss pop genres? I'm having a lot of trouble with Versace on the floor by Bruno Mars. The songs travels multiple times through passagio. so I can do pieces of it on the higher end and on the lower end in the middle I feel my vocal cords open up and shut like a trap door. I wonder if you'd have recommendations for using mix on songs that go through passagio on multiple times. If I were to perform the song tonight I would raise it a whole step or lower it a whole step to simply but, I really want to learn. Love your channel by the way. 👏👏👏
Could you do a video on how to achieve better cord closure in head voice? It seems that I can only do a breathy falsetto, or pull chest. I saw you do a Mickey Mouse voice in some other video to demonstrate a head voice with closure, but I literally can't do that voice, it has too much breathiness when I try to do it.
I can do a C5 no problem. Pretty much up to the E5 before I struggle. But I can't get over F#5 and that one isn't easy. Hopefully this will help to make it easier.
I am baritone , i have the coverdale approach .....or Rob halford in more matured gritty ways .. What it rest of head voice ( i never used / worked ) is also more fat sounding than thin , but its maybe a reflex of my mecanism . I do no support my head voice . I never worked the mix like it is commonly said . I extend my chest voice in top , i use back throat mould and High larynx technique for upper stuff around 5th octave . My style is quite gritty , but i do more extreme stuff to.
