When it comes to .22 ammo - the true test of quality control is to measure the thickness of the rim. Target shooters put their rim thicknesses into batches.. they shoot certain batches of rim thickness together. Every gun likes certain ammo... even identical makes and models may shoot the ammo ammo differently. My experiences with Thunderbolt is that it is very dirty and fouls my barrels too much.. I have decided to stick with plated ammo and to skip lead rounds altogether. You should also try Aquila ammo - it is pretty good for the price - Thanks for posting this video
Very informative. Thank you. I would add that, with Stingers which have a longer cartridge case and therefore longer powder burn, a longer barrel (minimum 20" barrel) often allows Stingers to perform better than with a shorter barrel.
Thunderbolts are highly accurate out of my Remington Matchmaster. They run a little dirty so I just clean my rifle after so many rounds. I've taken plenty of groundhogs and raccoon with thunderbolts. Even taken a groundhog at over 100yards using iron sights with thunderbolts, that's accounting for bullet drop, etc. I love CCI stuff, but like many, I'm on a tight budget, so I always use Remington thunderbolt's, they do the job for hunting and plinking without breaking the bank.
On the thunderbolts is all about the lot of ammo. I bought 4 boxes on sale, and was getting 1” groups at 50y and 3” groups at 100 yards. An after 2k rounds only 2 failures to fire, and they both went bang the second time. Next lot of thunderbolts I bought 2 boxes. 3” groups at 50y and 6.5-7” groups at 100 yards with about 15-20 failures to fire and I’m still not done with those.
I like Thunderbolts too in my Marlin 60. I've tried all the hypervelocity 22s over the years and they have all been less accurate than the standard velocity heavier exposed lead bullets. Gilded bullets are cleaner but usually less accurate and more expensive regardless of velocity. Accuracy is everything when hunting with 22.
He was saying he’s had some of this ammo for a while. So, are the Remington’s the old ones? You know they sold their factory and the new owners retooled, and the brand new (2023) Remington 22’s I’ve tried are much improved! And in my experience worked better than the Federals or Winchesters. I promise none of my new Remingtons had loose bullets as he displayed.
What I noticed over the years is that a lot of times Winchester and Remington will have spinning heads I think it's designed like that the reason so that the rounds feed better in the 22s CCI doesn't because their ammunition is a higher quality and the spinning on the heads are a lot less than what they were about 5 years ago but they still spin
I'm thinking that there are 2 possibilities... one is that his 10/22 just isn't really on point or needs more bench rest practice/better scope/ or some other variable... looks like all but the stingers are pretty consistent "about an inch and a quarter" or so which makes me think its the gun or the shooter... But he got me curious, I may have to test these in my marlin 60... Though I don't buy Winchester bulk anymore because it just doesn't work too often in multiple guns.
I shot some Remington Golden bullets in my Ruger MK IV at the range today, and it looked like I was shooting a shot gun. Switched to Federal American Eagle and put them mostly in the orange (center).
I just bought a box of Winchester 22LR555HP and went through the box checking the tightness, all were similarly tight with no looseness. I suppose your Win was a bad lot.
groupings are measured with a silver dollar, half dollar, quarter, nickel, and dime. If you are having trouble grouping inside the size of a silver dollar move closer to the target, but don't get any closer than 25' feet. Practice the fundamentals don't blame the ammo...
Hi Dave, love the video. I do have an issue with one thing. The Norma ammo. I go out shooting with a group of friends and from time to time we go in on 1000 rounds of 9mm together. We got Norma this particular time. One friend loaded you a magazine and started shooting. Pulled the trigger on the 3rd round and it detonated and jammed inside the gun. Completely splitting the frame. This was a brand new gun too. First time being fired. Surprisingly, and thankfully, no real injury to the shooter. We SHOULD have pulled all of that ammo right then. But, another friend loaded a magazine and went to shoot. The same two or three rounds in and a second internal jam and detonation, and another brand new gun destroyed. Also, luckily, no bad injury to the shooter. Obviously, we didn't shoot another round of Norma after that, and I will never trust ANY products from that company. We got extremely lucky that neither guy lost fingers or hands or anything. And not willing to test those waters again.
I Have watched many videos and figured that CCI was superior, in my semi auto and revolver I found them to be consistently weak rounds with multiple FTFs. Thunderbolt had 1 FTF from 100 rounds. I recommend that you avoid bulk purchase until you find out what your firearm likes,
Five and a half minutes in and I've made an observation. Seems to a pattern that your center (larger) target creates bigger groups. Take it for what it's worth but, in my opinion, there may be an issue with your optic or at least your human interface with that optic. And I agree with other commenters about including flyers, unless you felt human error during the process, include the flyers. Excellent, informative video this far in the video though. Thank you for saving me the cost of the ammo. I made similar observations about my Winchester ammo and have thankfully ran out.
I have some Winchester superspeed and a lot of the heads are loose on the ones i got. Not all but some. Average of 5-10 are loose in a case. ? But that was last year. Maybe they are better by now ?
Good video. Keep in mind that results will very with every gun. I took 6 different ammo brands to see what my S&W 617 liked. It ended up liking the CCI minimags and Winchester high velocity rounds. The slower the bullet the more open my groups were.
I just bought a box of the Winchester Super X, and I notice that some of the bullets seem to be a bit loose, and some spin in their cases, so I am going through the box one-by-one to make sure all bullets are seated properly. I just finished going through a new box of 300 rounds, and I found four rounds in which the bullet wiggles more than it should, so 98.667% of the rounds should be good to go.
This is a great idea for videos. Take a particular, popular, rifle type and shoot groups with it, at average range (say 50yards) using commonly available ammo. Of course, every individual rifle is a law unto itself, but specific rifle platforms (like your 10/22) should have similar characteristics. It might be good, if at the end, you had a flip chart kinda page where each rounds performance could be looked at and compared easily to the others.
For me, it's all about the group so my vote is keep measuring. What about the Rem Tbolts? You showed just 3 groups but they were all some of the best groups and you didnt mention any FTF or feed. I like them for the money.
No hate, Dave, but that is no way to measure your groups. Groups are measured center-to-center and should include fliers. Fliers can result from variations in powder charge/velocity, concentricty, bullet weight (usually due to voids), and rim thickness, not just shooter error. The group size is the distance between the most distant rounds minus the diameter of the bullet. My rifle also loves the Tac-22 ammo, but CCI standard velocity is a cheaper alternative. I shoot bolt action so the failure to feed issue doesn't bother me. Thanks for doing this. I love seeing ammo accuracy tests and hope you do more in the future.
The best ammo for price is Winchester cause I've hit prairie dog at 300 yards and smoke them sometimes they drop faster at further ranges than up close cuz it just Zips right through them yes CCI is probably the best ammo on the market and the best animal to get from them is the velociter it's the best all-around 40 grains I think it's moving around 1400 it's a really good shooting round yes Stingers are great too they're the fastest but I would say velociters are the best I've tested all the ammo Remington's good to Thunderbolt all of it and I think the production of ammo nowadays is getting better I have a lot less jams or misfires from Winchester now
That's a semi-auto for you, I have a marlin mod 60 Glenfield and it shoots about the same when dirty. But I also have a marlin mod 25 bolt action 7 shot it is a tack driver compared to the semi-auto.
I have a marlin model 60 and two model 80 rifles the oldest 80 does not have the micro groove barrel the newer 80 does have it. they all shoot better than my 10/22..

I like federal in bulk for several different calibers, usually consistanly good quality in manufacturing, feed and velocity, good price. Thunderbolts not bad 22lr ammo either.
Didn't catch how far you were testing for groups? Hard to beat auto match IMO. I had a very different outcome with Tac 22 out of a bolt gun. Anyway, good video.
For your test next time. Clean the barrel before you test each ammo. Then do 1 fouling shot then test. This will give you better and more accurate results.
My Ruger 1022 circa 1984 shoots consistent 1/2 inch ten shot groups at 25 yards using Remington .22 bulk ammo . The rifle has a mid grade Bushnell 32 mm 4x scope with no other mods . What happened to this once great little rifle ? I've seen several vids so far were this rifle groups like a damn shotgun . If anyone can tell me something about the new ones , please comment before I buy another one .
Randy Furness DO NOT buy a new 10/22. Mine is the worst gun that I own. BY FAR!!!! Horrible reliability, and embarrassing accuracy. Mag well, headspace, receiver, bolt, and firing pin protrusion. Allllll out of spec. It's a piece of JUNK. I NEVER shoot it. My Ruger LCR is a joke, also. Light primer strike, every 5 rounds or so. I don't buy Ruger anymore. Period. Taurus is smashing Ruger in the mouth these days.
If u shoot standard velocity.22 ammo I think u will have way better groups try out a bunch of other brands to the lapua-aguila-eley there are bunches of other good ones usually bulk boxes ammo are shit unless it’s cci or aguila
Unless cleaned before each group, and heated barrel... variables. 60 yrs ago TBolts were dime sized groups. Havent shot that Mossberg 36 in 2 decades. Stingers/ HiShok are 1680 fps. Makes a difference! My Norinco Browning takedown has a massive firing pin and fires everything other guns wont. Ive had 3 new 10/22s over 25 years, the last 3 yrs ago, all all 3 were junk, poorly made parts, erratic function.
The only issue with stingers in a Ruger 10/22 is reliability. Stingers are slightly longer than other .22lr bullets. If you get a match barrel the stingers will definitely be a problem because of the tighter chamber on a match barrel.
With my Ruger 10/22 I would just buy whatever was cheapest (for hunting ) it seems that anything shoots out of this rifle. With my Ruger SR22 handgun I can also shoot all the bulk ammo you had listed with minimal failures, I do like the federal auto match price point per 325 rounds. I don't carry concealed with this handgun so the match grade ammo (price)isn't necessary, its nothing to go through 150 or more rounds per trip to the range on a slow day! with the rifle anything is fair game as far as ammo goes but with the pistol I try to stay with a platted bullet to keep the barrel cleaner longer while at the range.
What are those groupings? I shoot cci standard through the same hole 7 out of 10 times. They're all touching except the odd flyer. That's off a bench rest of course. If hand I group similar yo your bench shots XD
All 22 dies are going to be the last to be changed in any factory. I have found over the years a bunch of different results. Some of the more expensive brands of late are lousy when it comes to accuracy. Guns are not much better these days. Pumping things out way to fast to keep quality control.
I have a Winchester Mod 69a from the 40's that will shoot most brands in a very tight group open sight. I have owned 1022's over the years and am not impressed with their accuracy. Marlin 60 or Winchester 160 is far better.
Bruce Shook I agree!!!! My 10/22 is the worst gun that I own. Reliably, AND accuracy. It's horrible. I don't get the hype, with a 10/22. Not impressed...
Google (brimstone ) 50$ trigger job on a 10-22 & your trigger will be home in ten days. order (the sweet spot) also try 10 15 &20 lbs of torque on the stock screws & you should get under a inch easily. Good luck
22 plinkster RAVES about a new rifle he got, for its accuracy: ua-cam.com/video/coB-HlGWeMc/v-deo.html Accuracy and gear is a lifelong adventure (I've been shooting for nearly 60 years now, lol). For one thing, it offers an AMAZING opportunity to burn through a lot of money. I've found it most important to determine exactly what you want the firearm to DO (...to be capable of) before you buy it. Furthermore, accuracy in NOT a function of the barrel exclusively. With rifles, bedding is also very important -- as well as tolerances of the action itself (i.e., how the round is held in the chamber). I'd also recommend buying a box of quality target ammo (like Eley) to get a benchmark to compare from. In any search for accuracy, beginners need to keep two things in mind that they sometimes don't: 1) Proper scope mounting (and indeed, sometimes scope quality itself -- sometimes crosshairs on cheaper scopes can "walk around!"). The number of people with loosely mounted scopes, wondering why they can't shoot accurately, is astonishing. 2) Cleaning/fouling. 22s can be very dirty guns. A badly fouled bore will badly degrade accuracy (and so will improper cleaning which is abrasive to the barrel crown). I've found Bore Tech cleaning supplies the best. An ordinary 10/22 is fine for plinking and practice. Monkeying around with it TOO MUCH, to try to achieve some "ideal" accuracy, will ultimately cost you more than buying a highly accurate rifle to begin with (and in the end, it still won't be as good as the good rifle). If you want a Ferrari, buy a Ferrari -- don't buy a Fiesta and start changing the drive train, etc.
Too bad you used a 1022. When 6-8 of us old High School buddies get together every so often the grouping of the guys with the 1022s always looks like yours, whereas the rest of our holes are mostly touching each other. - Not one round tested here can't out-shoot *that* rifle. Try an older Marln 60 or a good old Remington/Winchester single shot bolt, clean the heck out of the barrel, remove the copper & lead - then try this test again. Your eyes will be opened.
I shoot at ProjectAppleseed.org competition's. I use golden bullets. Have a stove pipe now and then, but at 25 yards I can put five shots in a 1/2" group.. With this cartridge I shot a rifleman score out of my built Ruger 10/22. I encourage everyone to attend an Appleseed..

It's ok....throwing away flyers is acceptable in this guy's back yard! Jeez... Oh...and the group size doesn't change if you measure from different directions...LOL
with the cost of ammo it will not be long until we see groups of one...Be careful shooting stingers in your 10/22, I have found fractured rear pins in two rifles.....
MEASURE CASE LENGTH OF CCI STINGER CASES=== ---- MANY CCI CASES HAVE LONGER CASES THAN NORMAL 22 SPECKS AND CAN ""DAMAGE""" MATCH CHAMBERED GUNS,, A WARNING CAME WITH MY CUSTOM CLARK AND VOLQUARTSEN CUSTOM PISTOLS AND RIFLES.. HOPE INFO IS HELPFUL ? THANKS FRED US ARMY RETIRED,
Very Surprised with the crappy Stinger results... I need to put my 10/22 in the caldwell and see what happens! Thanks for the info. They actually manufacture a 3rd party "Stinger Barrel" which would be interesting. Stinger is my Stocking gift at Christmas once a year; my go to on killing game. REM7600
I'll try to remember to post back the results. It may be a while as the temps here in the NW are in the single digits up to 24 now... Not comfortable to go out and shoot in, if you've ever done it. Thanks Dave, I have a closet full of 22 in all but the stinger, Super X, and federal match. I've seen similar results with my Remington 597

HotRod Ray I agree! I just bought a 10/22. Not impressed.... My Marlins smoke it, in every way possible. Period.
HotRod Ray Yup. My 10/22 is a piece of JUNK, also. I think this gun has been hyped up by kids. LOL
I've seen various reports that say NEVER EVER use stingers in a 10/22 target barrel!
+Malcolm Taylor yeah, same here, but mine isn't target, it's just the regular carbine, different right? I hope so. :)
You said you wanted an upgraded barrel... Just sayin'
+Malcolm Taylor got it, thanks.
The only issue with stingers in a Ruger 10/22 is reliability. Stingers are slightly longer than other .22lr bullets. If you get a match barrel the stingers will definitely be a problem because of the tighter chamber on a match barrel.
Norma didn't like to feed because it's lower power than the other ammunition tested
My Ruger 10 / 22 Target shoot with CCI STANDARD in 50 m 5 shoot groups of 15 - 20 mm.
mm?
If you want to quote in MMS go to europe!USA =sae measurements unless ofcourse you are a Democrat in which case communist measurements are expected.
Id recommend cci SV. Pretty much every 1022 does good groups with them. I did a ammo comparisson video on my channel and that was my conclusion
You need to to shoot 10 shot groups . The. You know if that flyer is just a flyer if what the amo really does
Federal Automatch at Wal-Mart $14.98 / bof os 325
That's a good price. Still about twice as much as the good old days.
Yup.
Stuff hits same hole 3/10 in my Colt Woodsman 6 5/8" @ 25yds!
Pew Pew Dave good ole days = 500 count brick for 8 bucks 😍
I didn’t start shooting that far back.
Have a regular 16" barrel?
Get you a marlin model 60 if you want accurate results
My 597 out shoots my marlin mod 60 everyday of the week.
I might be wrong. But it seems the slower and heavier the round. The better the accuracy.
What are those groupings? I shoot cci standard through the same hole 7 out of 10 times. They're all touching except the odd flyer. That's off a bench rest of course. If hand I group similar yo your bench shots XD
Pretty arrogant.
What rifle were you using for your test. Great video! Thanks
It was fiddy yards. Glad you liked it!
It was a stock ruger 10/22.
not a fan of stingers really, unless you are just looking for brute force .... the round is too hot for many purposes ...
You can't just ignore the "flyers" which make the group 2" instead of 1". Hillarious.
You should try Dynamit Match, all 5 will be touching & it's super clean.
N Domitus Maybe from any other rifle, besides a 10/22. LOL
All 22 dies are going to be the last to be changed in any factory. I have found over the years a bunch of different results. Some of the more expensive brands of late are lousy when it comes to accuracy. Guns are not much better these days. Pumping things out way to fast to keep quality control.
What distance are you shooting the groups from?
Fiddy yards
At what distance were you shooting?
I believe it was 50 yards, been so long.
10/22 affordable garbage! An old Marlin 60 will smoke it in the accuracy department everytime.
Hey bud I did a 22lr ammo review you may like.
Well that is with a 10/22 so you shouldn’t expect much.
Great Info.. Thank you Sir!
A Dob glad you liked it!
Pew Pew Dave I second his comments. Good report sir
Google (brimstone ) 50$ trigger job on a 10-22 & your trigger will be home in ten days. order (the sweet spot) also try 10 15 &20 lbs of torque on the stock screws & you should get under a inch easily. Good luck
I read through the comments. Lot of comments from the “experts”. Much class in your response. Good job. I liked your video Mr. Pee Pee
lol
No props for the thunder bolts huh... biased
try marlin far accurate
agree - my marlin 60 loves the thunderbolts - almost touching 5 round groups off the bench at 50 yards.
T03-78-01
Can't throw out flyers in one group and not on others.
how far were you shooting from?
Edit: 50 yards
ok good groups ,when you first said a 100 i was like wow !!
Ya, I had to double check after I posted. It was a while ago.
yeah, id be able to shoot one hole groups everytime too at 100 yards if it wasn't for the gosh darn "flyers"...lol
Google the Paco Kelly tool. Excellent.
Great review...
Thanks for checking it out! I have another 22LR video coming out real soon.
How many yards?
It was all at 50
22 plinkster RAVES about a new rifle he got, for its accuracy: ua-cam.com/video/coB-HlGWeMc/v-deo.html
Accuracy and gear is a lifelong adventure (I've been shooting for nearly 60 years now, lol).
I gotta tell you, I am not impressed at all with any of it.
why tale measure wow. everything is a flyer
C ELOWSKI I do the same with my 10/22 takedown, just with federal automatch ammo.
All I see is guaranteed kills in center mass to the chest
I would sell that gun Dave
Most of the video is Dave using a tape measure. Unnecessary - just get to the results.

Fake review for the tac 22 he never touched the lead like the others
MEASURE CASE LENGTH OF CCI STINGER CASES=== ---- MANY CCI CASES HAVE LONGER CASES THAN NORMAL 22 SPECKS AND CAN ""DAMAGE""" MATCH CHAMBERED GUNS,, A WARNING CAME WITH MY CUSTOM CLARK AND VOLQUARTSEN CUSTOM PISTOLS AND RIFLES.. HOPE INFO IS HELPFUL ? THANKS FRED US ARMY RETIRED,
Buy a Marlin, dude. Trust me! I own both the 10/22, and a Marlin 881. No comparison in accuracy. All of my .22's will outperform my 10/22.
Nice video.....
Thanks!
Get a savage...way better then Marlins and 10/22
@NK 60 never shot a cz...how's it better
Thanks I'll look into a cz...
Tape measure not necessary target has one inch grind Da
Shots don't always hit the lines😁
Pew Pew Dave just saying you can tell
Meh, sometimes I'm OCD about stuff
Thunderbolt is trash...
Too bad this was done with a ruger 10/22 ... they are just awfully inaccurate
REM7600
Glad you found it useful !
I'll try to remember to post back the results. It may be a while as the temps here in the NW are in the single digits up to 24 now... Not comfortable to go out and shoot in, if you've ever done it.
My NON-Modified 10/22 and 22/45 are 35 and 25(I think) years old!
Stingers are still my choice for the time being... (27 birds with the pistol one year, it was awesome)
Can't attach a file at the moment but I thought the crew would like it... (Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?)
