In this video, we collect data and test the Federal Punch up against the classic CCI Stinger in Clear Ballistics gel. Punch is touted as a fantastic new round to make 22LR a more viable personal defense option, especially in short barrels. Stingers are the classic super high-velocity, pack-a-wallop rimfire round that can take care of varmints and other critters with ease.

I was a victim of an attempted car jacking and defended myself with a Walter P22 with 10 rounds of Federal Punch. All I can say is it did what it was supposed to do. I’m alive to type this comment the other guys…not so much. Unfortunately. I’m sold on the Federal Punch. It saved my life.

These detractors should come with me to the range. My Beretta M9 provided a very tight group 15 round group at 5 yards. Imagine how those
15, or in your case, 10 rounds would stack up at car window distance.
Like the 45 versus 9mm, the 22 versus 9mm, has less recoil meaning back on target immediately. My little old granny wife has the M9 at her desk for home defense. I’m betting her life on it. And if 15 rounds aren’t enough, she’s got 2 more mags to send your way. FYI, she’s a shoot til you go down, not an empty the msg kind of shooter.

The Stinger has always been considered the gold standard in .22 LR “defensive” ammunition. Looks like that title might go to the Punch. Good to see the .22 evolving over the years. Truly a fun cartridge to shoot, and can be very deadly.

@@BillB23I’m of the opinion at this point that MANY of these .22 rounds provide excellent defensive protection. 40 gr Minimags target rounds for penetration, Aguila also makes several reliable rounds. Inside my house I wouldn’t want the blast of a .223 probably, but I might end up there in shtf despite myself. .22 is extremely accurate and, after seeing so many of these videos, I think it works just fine.

I have many boxes of first year manufacture Stingers from 1975. I still have 9 boxes left from what I found in a 30 cal can I put away decades ago and forgot about. Every year I shoot 20 rounds from what is left to see if they are still reliable. So far 100% ignition and full performance compared to recent production Stingers. Because of that, for long term storage I stick with Stingers for the proven longer than usual shelf life for .22LR. I also have a few boxes of Sears .22LR ammo my Dad bought in 1980 give or take a year. Few of them fire and if you pull the bullet, the powder literally looks and feels like grease. That Sears ammo is a good example for what I usually expect from 45+ year old .22LR ammo. Just thought y'all would find that interesting.

On small game, the impact of a CCI Stinger is legendary. It almost turns a standard .22 into a .22 mag. We got a permit to remove some large nuisance birds that were leaving a mess on playgrounds. We used pellet rifles, and subsonic .22 all the way up to Stingers. There was no comparison to the "crumpling affect" of 1600 fps.

As with any defensive ammo, make sure your ammo of choice will function and shoot reliably in YOUR gun! This is doubly true for 22LR since they are often not the most reliable when it comes to feeding. I can't find any information about the Punch ammo, but Stingers have a longer than normal case and OAL. It probably won't matter for most 'defensive' guns, but I have seen warnings for some guns with match-style chambers to NOT use Stingers because of the case length.

The flat surface on the end of a bullet is called the meplat. The bigger the meplat, the better the hydrodynamic shack transferred into the recipient body as displayed by the Punch cavities.

    • @chuckhaggard1584

      What?
The reason why this bullet has a flat point is to help insure straight, nose forward, penetration, nothing to do with the BS made up terms you are misspelling. RN bullets tend to yaw, which cuts into penetration depth.

I kept a 10/22 with a bx25 magazine, flashlight and stingers in the corner for my girlfriend when I worked 3rd shift. We sleep upstairs so if someone ever made it through 2 locked doors hopefully they'd make enough noise for her wake up, get behind the book case and aim that thing at the fatal funnel aka long hallway at the top of the stairs. She's shot it enough to know how to clear dud rounds or malfunctions in the dark.

I keep my sons revolver loaded with federal when we are out in the woods and I've used it to kill a hog from about 15 yards with federal punch straight between the eyes drop instantly siezed up and died within about 30 seconds so thats what ive carried ever since and out of the rifle always CCI stinger. Currently the 22 LR ammo that strikes the best balance of bullet weight and muzzle velocity to achieve the greatest power is CCI’s Stinger 22 LR Ammo. This round has a 32 grain CPHP bullet loaded to a muzzle velocity of 1,640 fps. The hyper-velocity Stinger cartridge boasts a whopping 191 ft lbs of muzzle energy. It furthermore remains supersonic past 75 yards, so it delivers an impressively flat trajectory.

  • @cj4freedom856

Fun video to watch, probably more fun to make, anyway, after watching the impact to the gel blocks I was surprised at how much more impact shock the 16 inch barrel delivered over the pistol barrel. The Stinger seemed to win out on initial shock caused to the gel block when fired out of the rifle. Great job showing the differences.

  • @jerrybobteasdale
    @jerrybobteasdale Рік тому +5

Looks like one should expect a Stinger or a Punch to tumble at lower muzzle velocities. So, a short barrel or long distance will lessen chance of mushrooming, but will increase the chance of tumbling after impact. Either thru tumbling or mushrooming, you get more tissue damage.

    .22 'rules' in effect
-pretty much no 22 opens up out of a pistol
-pretty much all 22's open up, fragment, or deform in some way out of a rifle
-the performance difference is usually so small that the only thing that really matters is 'Does my gun like it ?"

    • @Paelorian
      @Paelorian Рік тому

You don't want a .22LR to expand out of a defensive handgun. If the ammo expanded, it wouldn't be useful for anything larger than a squirrel or rabbit. .22LR lacks penetration. Although almost no available .22LR rounds expand at handgun velocities, they do not all achieve similar penetration. Federal Punch is the deepest penetrating .22LR round and the only one that penetrates 12" in gel even out of a 1⅞" snubnose barrel. It's consistent. The flat nose of the bullet should also cause slightly larger wound channels than the typical round nose.
.22LR penetration has always been marginal. If relying on it to defend your life, it's important to choose the best round. Because most .22LR rounds underpenetrate when shot through a handgun, and Federal Punch doesn't, it's worth buying.
With all "mousegun" handgun cartridges, careful ammunition selection is important to achieve minimum penetration standards from typical short handgun barrels. With .380, .32 ACP, and .32 Long, most non-expanding ammo will penetrate adequately, but expanding ammo won't. With .22LR, .22WMR, and .25 ACP, only the very best premium rounds designed for handgun use will consistently penetrate adequately (to FBI spec minimum 12" in ballistics gel). With .22 Short, no available round will penetrate adequately. Even though there isn't a great difference in velocity out of a very tiny barrel like a NAA mini-revolver, .22LR is a much better performer than the Short because it has rounds like Punch that can decently penetrate.
Underpenetrating rounds can still kill easily if put in the right place, but they also run the risk of not penetrating deep enough into the body of an attacker to stop them from killing a victim. It's happened many times. You want a round that can sink deep enough into the body to do damage. It might need to break through a bone or pass through a large amount of flesh to disable an attacker.

I feel that initial damage from the stinger is way better than the punch. I don't think excessive penetration is as important as initial damage in a self defense situation.

I alternate the two if I carry a 22LR but I am going to try CCi's new Uppercut and see if it will be the new CCi to carry and alternate in the magazine with the Punch.

After watching a lot of videos on the new CCI Uppercut, I'm not convinced it would be a great defensive round so I'll just stick with Federal Punch if I ever need to carry using a 22LR pistol.

I always appreciate you informative and interesting topic videos. The one thing I like is you are not opinionated. For example; when you gently mentioned that some people wish to carry a 22 for self defense and then gave positives for that subject. Many other videos are bias and over opinionated, sometimes offensive to some viewers. Thank you for your passing along information's to us viewers.

Let's call a spade a spade. A .22 pistol is WAY better than a knife, sharp stick, or a club. Delivered energy is not a stopper. Penetration wins in ANY .22 encounter. The Punch's non-expanding bullet wins every time in my book due to penetration. Two thumbs up on this video.

    Great comparison.
I was not at all shocked that the carbine got less penetration.
Crazy analogy here, but the 460 Weatherby runs the same 500 grain bullets as the ancient 450 Nitro Express or the 458 Winchester Magnum but about 400 fps faster.
It would seem that the 460 does not penetrate as well because it expands so quickly.
But...the same thing happened with heavy jacketed solids which deform at the 2600fps of the Weatherby.
I participated in one of these experiments but they have been done many times by enthusiasts, manufacturers, and even some governmental agencies.
Our own USFS conducted a pretty comprehensive set of tests to determine the most affective cartridge for defense against large bears in Alaska and the wimpy 458 Winchester out performed the 460.
It just all shows that there is a lot more to terminal ballistics than velocity and foot pounds of energy.
    Great content.
    Cheers!

I have the punches and upper cuts for my pistol and revolvers. If you read the tags on the boxes, they are made for 2 1/2 inch to 6 inch barrels. They do make a giid defense round or small game/ varmit round but that is almost all 22lrs. I use mine for hunting and self defense when i don't want to carry my bigger caliber firearms.

I recently tested a ton of 22lr out of a 6.5" revolver and found something very interesting, which I suspect can be attributed to the burn rate profile of the powders in each round. What I found was that I consistently got better performance out of my 6.5" barrel with the mini-mag than I did with the stinger. The mini-mag delivered an average of 15 ft lbs more energy, more controlled expansion, and almost 50% better penetration. Some other stuff I found interesting was that a tie for #1 in energy was the superx hyper velocity(1435), but the superx std(1280) was only 5 fpe behind it. Also the browning bpr, which is rated exactly the same as the superx hyper, was complete garbage. Out of 10 rounds I had a ftf, a near squib that barely made it out of the barrel didn't even register on the chrony, and the rest had an ES of 300fps.
