  • Quick rundown of each ammo I tested. Most shot like I thought they would, a few surprised me for better and worse. Groups at 50 yards.
    EDIT
    Replaced the factory barrel with an E.R. Shaw 20 inch barrel. Will post videos soon.
    I've since got a trigger gauge and with it adjusted all the way down its averaging 1 pound 5 oz. Also i've ordered 1000 rounds of ELEY force and ELEY target. Target is the most accurate round out of this particular rifle at 50-100, eley force for 200+

      When you use the wrong words to describe your work....you lose all credibility. Max deviation is flat f'ing wrong.
      If you shoot like you talk, your reviews are crap. Blow you nose and do not pop you lips when you talk. Horrible video.

    Man, I love your documentation, time and $ you spent on this. Thank you. Seems .22 rifles are notorious for being ammo sensitive. I prefer subsonic and suppressed so no earplugs. My son just went two/ten at a 20 gauge empty shotgun shell at 115 yds. Shooting from prone, Savage MKII, BSA Glass, and CCI standard subsonic. Winds were from 0 to 10 and changing directions. Went 5/5 on 6” gong at 200. Ran out of adjustment and was just using holdover (no dots or lines), so I am proud of it.

    You keep saying that you wouldn't want to shoot a subsonic beyond 50 yds. Actually, you will find that subsonic is MUCH more accurate at long range in a .22LR. When you shoot a lightweight bullet at 1200fps, it very quickly drops below the speed of sound. It goes trans sonic somewhere from 40-70 yds, usually. As it dips below the speed of sound, the pattern of the shockwaves change, and the bullet is destabilized. Once it is destabilized at 40-70 yards, it has the rest of it's flight time to wander all over the place. This is why you might see great groups at 50 from a supersonic, but crappy groups at 100. If you use a subsonic, it never goes trans sonic. OK, there is more drop, but you get yourself a 20-30MOA scope base, and you are fine out beyond 300. Yes, the bullet lands on the target like a mortar, but it's consistent and predictable.

    • @coreyd1474
      @coreyd1474  5 років тому +44

      No you're absolutely right. Since this i've taken all the best to 200 and beyond and eley force will shoot up to 1/2 moa at 200. That was something i didn't really know about how supersonic 22 rounds are easily destabilized through the transonic barrier. Like you said, its basically coming straight down but its coming straight down consistently. I can shoot force out to 350 and not run out of dope on the scope. the rprf has a 30 moa base plus the reticle has 36 more MOA of elevation. Interesting stuff.

    • @fishrrelaxing9361
      @fishrrelaxing9361 5 років тому +2

      Joel Curtin spot on the issue with hv at range is they all drop below super sonic around 76ish yards.. when the fall back below super sonic they get pushed off target. All long range 22 shooters is std velocity heavy for caliber rounds and elevate their scope to make up for drop.

    • @joelcurtin9409
      @joelcurtin9409 5 років тому +1

      Fish R Relaxing I was shooting Eley Tenex, but I’m running out, and they are going for crazy money. For now, I’m switching to SK Long Range. The standard deviation is better on the Tenex (5.4 vs 7.5), but the SK is half the price.

    • @ontargetthomunclesam3926
      @ontargetthomunclesam3926 5 років тому

      Joel Curtin yes but your rail better have a lot of MOA at least 30 at the elevation adjustment or your rings are shimed up quite a bit but you are right high velocity and supersonic stuff is real accurate over a hundred yards I've seen some people shooting at 500 yards

    Love the video and extremely thorough comparison. I’m surprised you didn’t try anything from Eley or the Federal Ultra Match but I understand trying to keep the cost down as low as possible. I tested 7 different ammos in my RPRR and found that it liked the Eley Tenex, Federal Ultra Match and Eley Edge best in that order. The CCI 40 gr standard velocity was a close match as well until I went out to 100 yds. That’s when the Tenex really separates itself from the others. Great video!

    Nice summary. Norma TAC22 shoots very well in my RPR rifles. 8/10" 5 shot group at 100 yds. You have to clean the barrel and shoot a bunch of the Norma to acclimate the barrel to the waxy lube. It's that way with any of the bullets that have the soft lube.

    When you get right at the point of breaking the sound barrier then you start having group problems. Thats why the PMC at 910 FPS shot a good group, you gun barrel twist rate and the slower FPS works very well together. Once you get to around 1130 fps and above its a different story most of the time.

    A suggestion for these types of accuracy videos. When you are shooting 10 round groups, I would allow for
    operator or environmental (wind) error at least once. (I'm a mathemetician, throw out the best and worst, average the rest. I'm willing to live with leaving the best in since it would often be hard to pick out.) Throw out the worst flyer and post the results for a 9 round group. The CCI Standard for example would have been MUCH better.

    The SK and the Wolf are exactly the same ammo. They just change the outer box. The yellow SK is the Wolf Target and the Red box is the Wolf Match. You will get an occasional flyer out of both. Seems to be about 2 or 3 a box. The Lapua pistol king has a faster burning powder to get higher velocity out of pistol length barrels. The pistol loads tend to get really good standard deviations because all the powder gets burnt in a rifle barrel. They are kind of an "insider's secret" to getting match grade ammo a little less expensive. Works best in bolt guns because it burns hot and quick.

    Your dedication to comparing several different manufacturers and loads for the 22lr should be commended. It’s time consuming and NOT cheap to this comparison of the results in your rifle. Anyone that has a 22lr would be doing themselves a huge favor by doing this type of comparison for themselves. Every rifle is different and the 22lr specifically is probably more particular to certain ammo. If someone were to just pick up a random ammo for their 22lr and maybe has bad results at the range may think their rifle isn’t any good. Finding the ammo that your rifle likes is crucial to being happy with your ability to hit what you’re aiming at. Thanks for sharing your experience at finding out what YOUR rifle likes. 😊

    Great job! This is a well-organized and thorough review. Most of your results mirror what I saw with my RPRimfire when it still wore its factory barrel. The only exceptions being that I have not seen a gun group Federal Automatch well in many, many years, (guys in my gun club laughingly refer to it as "automiss"), and that Lapua Midas+ wasn't quite as tight from my gun. Mine also did not like Aguila Super Extra high velocity nearly as much as yours does. I was not fully satisfied with the accuracy from my rifle, so I picked up a Green Mountain fluted and threaded 16" barrel. Not only does it cut my groups by half with almost every ammunition I have tried, it also reduced the obscenely barrel-heavy nature of the rifle. It's a lot easier to lug around, and more importantly, balances reasonably well offhand. It shoots cheap Aguila Super Extra standard velocity into the high 0.3" to mid 0.4" range, and Midas + into the low 0.3" range. The difference is more pronounced at 100 yards, but given the price difference, I'm perfectly happy to hit dime-sized targets at 50 yards for 4 cents a pop. These rifles are definitely not well-suited to benched shooting anyway.

    • @derekshapiro1
      @derekshapiro1 4 роки тому

      I should add that Lapua Center-X shoots almost identically to Midas Plus in all my rimfires, and it's a bit cheaper too. It's my go-to load in several of my rifles even including match participation. Pretty much every target gun I own prefers either Eley Club or Lapua Center-X. Eley Tenex has simply not performed well for me despite being the winningest rimfire ammo in the world. Maybe guns need to specifically have a chamber cut for the EPS bullet to make good use of it.

      22s traditionally shoot subsonic more consistant than HV and thats out of almost every gun. i have had a few types that performed ok like federal white box and eley force. my advice is if you're just shooting for fun stick with subsonic. no 30moa isn't too much.

    Great video. I have been testing ammo in my new CZ 457. I watched a lot of videos and did some research on how people test ammo. A common theme I saw is shooting foulers to season the barrel before shooting groups. Different brands have different lubes and people shoot foulers so the barrel gets fully coated with the new lubricant. During my testing I definitely noticed my groups tightening up by the 10th round. For my tests, I pull a bore snake (with the brush removed), then I shoot 20 foulers, followed by six 5-shot groups. I use the best 5 groups for my average group size. Pulling the bore snake is not necessary but I am shooting suppressed so my barrel gets very dirty, very fast. I do consider shooting the foulers necessary. 10 rounds is probably enough but I shoot 20 just get the most accurate data possible. I realize I shot a lot more ammo to conduct my test. If you do not want to shoot an entire box, I would recommend shooting 10 foulers then three 5 shot groups. I really prefer my way though and choosing the best 5 of 6, 5-shot groups. This way I can eliminate one group where either the wind, the ammo, or myself caused a flier. Just wanted to share how I have been conducting my tests to give you some ideas...

      depending what kind of am mo you're going from and going to 10 is probably too many, 5 at most will suffice with like ammo (sk, lapua, eley, ect) but for non coated stuff yea i agree. 10 at least.

    • @mdees88
      @mdees88 Рік тому

      @@coreyd1474 I agree, but i want a standard way to test all my ammo. I don't want to change my testing methods for certain brands. 20 foulers on every type of ammo can definitely be considered "overkill", but it guarantees that the barrel is fouled in before I shoot my groups. I shot eley match, target, club, and subsonic hollow all back to back. You're right, I didn't need many foulers between them at all. But my first 5 shot fouler group of eley match (after shooting a different brand) was 1.5" at 50yds. Next 5 was 3/4", and after that, they were ~.5". I just wanted a uniform way to test everything, and 20 foulers, plus 6 5-shot groups, uses all 50 rounds.

    What makes ammo get good groups is the fit to the barrel, imparting the twist by proper fit from the lands and grooves stabilizing the bullet in flight . This is why some ammo seems to work better than others in certain barrels for no reason, it has to do with the fit of a particular ammo . If the bullet is a little loose it doesn't get the right amount of twist to stabilize in flight , this is why a Guy will say " I only run a certain brand and type of ammo in my rifle. Check Each bullet width with a gauge to see what variation are present and which are more accurate in your rifle.

    Hello Corey D.
    I have the same 22. I once read some thing from a Utube man called STKO. He was pointing out a problem with 10 22's where the bolt harms the first round ( I think thats' what he meant).
    I notice that my bolt really scars the round if it is closed with the mag in before the first shot.
    I now see that you always have the bolt back when putting in the mag.
    Is this a rule with skilled shooters? I am very new to shooting.
    Please. Jimmy D.

    • @coreyd1474
      @coreyd1474  3 роки тому

      its not necessarily just the bolt that causes scaring on the round a lot of it has to do with the way its fed from the magazine. thats why you see the super accurate rifles (vudoo, rimx, cz, tikka, bergara) have a feeding system where the round never touches the chamber. it definitely has an impact on accuracy if its a large mark on the round.

    The effort here was great. I just can’t take these results as final for determining what type of ammo I should buy because I got different results with Norma tac 22 and CCI standard velocity. I managed to get a 5 shot group of 0.17” at fifty yards with CCI sv out of my Ruger precision rim fire
    Norma shot better than what you got as well
    I get it. Every rifle is different so buy each and see which one your rifle likes.

    I like the Federal target grade $18.99 per 325, they are a clean and reliable round for a great price (around these parts) but my favorite (not even in your video) are the (Walmart exclusive) Federal red box (fed reds) @ $19.94 per 550, you just cant beat this price per the amount of rounds, these actually look polished! 36gr. copper plated h/p 1260 fps and any copper plated bullet helps prevent fouling in the barrel after the round is fired! I like these not so much for my Ruger 10/22 rifle but my Ruger SR-22 handgun, it eats anything I put in it but I like these two rounds for the reasons mentioned. I can remember when the Thunderbolts ruled (pricewise) the market even as dirty and unreliable as they are but now you pay an extra $10 to spend an extra 10 minutes washing your hands when you get back from the range! Awesome video, thanks for showing the differences in these loads!

      I totally agree. White box federal price/availability/accuracy they're hands down the best. my only gripe about bullets going as fast as you said the red feds are going is 22 doesn't handle the transonic face well so thats why you don't get the accuracy out to distance as you would something in the sweet spot around 1090 or so. Anyway, thanks for the input and thanks for watching!

      @@coreyd1474 when it comes to hunting (squirrel) where distance plays into it, I haven't really had any instances that comes to mind where I have taken a shot out far enough to see that discrepancy that I wasn't totally willing to put on me (usually the 2nd shot does the trick) not the ammo, and as for my pistol I'm only shooting 15' out to maybe 45' where that wouldn't even come into play, or at least I haven't noticed, shooting AR 500 and they go clank every time...lol . that's probably why I haven't noticed what you pointed out...thanks for the info....one thing I can say is that with my Crosman TR-77 air rifle .177 using PBA pellets I'm going sonic because I can hear the crack and it sounds like a 22! and I get good...(ok decent) accuracy with them out to 25 yds.

    I'm in my 60s and at one time back in the 1980s PMC ammo was a common Eco-brand. I have found that PMC Target is very accurate from Ruger Mark IIs as well. I'm talking .25" diameter , not ctc, 10 shot groups at 44 feet (length of my basement range) from a sandbag rest. If you can find it, buy it.

    Great job on these videos! They got me curious so I rounded up 29 different mid to low price rounds and tested them. Turns out I have a Mexican 10/22. Across the board, the Aguila shot the best, especially the Super Extra (1130, 1255 and 1280 fps.). The standard velocity (1130 fps) shot the best overall, followed by RWS Semi Auto. I couldn't be happier about this. I stocked up on Aguila. I even named my rifle "the machine" in Spanish (pr. Ma-Kee-Nah, I think lol).
    CCI did not shoot well in my rifle, especially Mini-Mags. Blazer was the best. It was consistently around 1 inch. My tests were at 50 yds. over about 3 days with light but gusty wind of around 5 -8 mph.
