  • Disintegration Loop 1.1 consists of one static shot of lower Manhattan billowing smoke during the last hour of daylight on September 11th, 2001, set to the decaying pastoral tape loop Basinski had recorded in August, 2001. Shot from Basinski's roof in Williamsburg Brooklyn, this is an actual documentary of how he and his neighbors witnessed the end of that fateful day. It is a tragically beautiful cinema verite elegy dedicated to those who perished in the atrocities of September 11th, 2001

Visited the 9/11 Museum here in NYC recently and was so "happy" (not quite the right word) that they included the Disintegration Loops in one of the installations. I recognized it as soon as I came around the corner and heard it overhead. A truly difficult museum to spend time in without getting choked up. Very fitting that they included it.

I wind up back here, something special about this piece and this footage. It articulates something deep in the centre of it all. Less a political opinion piece and more just an honest lament, for the state of things, the quiet ache of the human struggle in this current age. The cycle of melody and the slow decay, the imagery of billowing smoke. It is wrong to think of Sept 11th as some sort of beginning of anything. For some it was the end of an innocence, the end of the illusion that somehow peace and prosperity reigns. Instead there is a strangeness when one realizes the decay that already exists, the strain and tension that ripples beneath the surface, the polished shine of America, held together by such carefully stretched strings. And so much we wished to over look, that we cannot over look. So much we wish to point the blame and miss our own brokenness and darkness, this darkness billowing out of our very centre. May we have compassion to see, wisdom to learn from our secret selves, may we learn the value of forgiveness, the bankrupt nature of revenge, may we come to sense the wounding of our passivity, to no longer ignore the lives we hurt with the excess of our consuming lives, and the insatiability of our corporate greed. But this all takes time, and maybe for an hour we can sit with it, and try and discern it's whisperings.

iTzDark740 There are a lot of great "minimalist" composers out there that achieve the same thing for me. I like Terry Riley's concert in Koln; I come back to it all the time. Arthur Russell helps me, too.

iTzDark740 Interesting that it helped you through some parts of depression. This masterpiece is a haunting reminder of the decisions I made my first semester of college. Ever time I listen to this I do the samething I did the day I heard this; lay on my bed, turn all lights off, and slowly close my eyes as a tear herre and there falls. The psyce is a wicked thing.

it becomes more and more heartbreaking as it decays and as the gloom of night overtakes it. As a piece it is masterful. As an event, a tragedy.

Imagine being the plane passing by at 29:14 . Seeing all the chaos that lies below. In a way, despite how powerless you are to it, you keep chugging on... It's sort of poetic in a way. This video is a work of art; a historic footnote of our American history. May we all keep moving forward; despite the hurt we have faced.

the day just ended here about an hour ago, but still:
may we honor those who helped on this day, and keep those who didn't make it in our hearts
may we pray for a brighter world tomorrow, where we can all learn to love just a little more

This music reminds me of the hours after 9/11, like how the rest of the day went. Families crying, calling their relatives about the events that unfolded. I imagine a family of 5 sitting in their apartment in manhattan crying over the lost ones, panicked and confused, looking out of the window and seeing the smoke clear out.

Thoughts in fragments my mind yearns for clarity. Ideas fade like the days of youth that can never be relived. We all live in fragments of time. Use it wisely, we all die alone. Beauty is found in pain. Without the pain I feel, I would never understand the beauty that surrounds me. I am isolated.

Pompy for this genre or that haunting but simple loop type of tracks there is so many pulled off so perfectly that i struggle to put them in order.. i would probably still say rhubarb is at the top with burial - forgive trailing behind at a molecular amount
      # rhubarb
      # burial - forgive
      # gas - pop, track 4 and 7
      # stars of the lid - even if you're never awake
      # stars of the lid - meaningful moment through a meaningless process
      # disintegration loops 1.1 and 3, or just the whole album..
      # boards of canada - nothing is real
      # stone in focus is pretty up there..
lots more BoC and SoTL too, there is so much of it. they all seem to convey the same emotion
