This sweater is a top-down raglan style, knit in a light summery yarn. Learning to knit (and fit) this style of sweater will set you up to knit all kinds of other patterns. I've sized this sweater from XS to 3X.
Thank you. The sign of an excellent teacher is someone who explains things so well a novice feels prepared to tackle the task.
Staci, I love your tip on finishing when weaving in the ends (separating the plys and tying a knot so the ends don't slip out). I now do this on just about everything I knit, with every type of yarn fiber. Thanks so much for this great tip!!
Watching this video has given me confidence to knit my very first sweater!! YOUR TUTORIALS HAVE BEEN MY FAVORITE FOR YEARS! THANK YOU!
"You'll have an easier time trying this on because you have arms". Best line ever!
Yes - I design, write, and grade (size) all of my own patterns.
Yes - repeating Rounds 1 and 2 for the raglan increases means you work one increase round, then one plain knit round.
I just finished my sweater and I absolutely adore it. Thank you for the great pattern and the tutorials! (I used the "lifeline" on the first sleeve after getting a bit carried away and knitting a few inches longer than I wanted, LOL!) This was the perfect project for me, as my first knit sweater.
I am so thrilled to have found your tutorial! I love both sweater designs. Thank you for sharing your talent with the rest of us.
I am seriously thinking about doing this in spring, partly due to the fact I've already knit a top down raglan by Sheep and Stitch, partly because I feel I have.more experience with sweaters and I can adjust the body slightly and do some waist shaping so it doesn't fit so loosely. I'm really looking forward to it!!
The marker used to mark the beginning of the round is a ring marker (doesn't have to be a clippie marker), and it's on the needle between the first and last stitch of the round. That's a least for the body of the sweater...when I'm knitting smaller circumference (like sleeves) on DPNs, I use a clippie marker to mark the beg of the round. I don't use it to mark a specific stitch, but instead just the space between the two DPNs where the round starts.
Thank you so much. Now I have some idea how to knit a seamless sweater with your help. What you do is wonderful and great help to us.Keep making a lot more videos like this one.
@MrPammybone Yes - 24" circulars will work fine for this sweater. The important thing is that you get gauge - meaning the correct number of stitches per inch. So the needle size (not length) is what is going to be more important. To knit a hat, you'll want to use 16" circulars. It's a very handy cord length to have for hats as well as sleeves.
I can't wait to try this. I have never made a wearable knitted item before, thanks for sharing this with us.
This is an older video so I doubt my comment will be seen, but it was incredibly helpful. Just finished my first top down sweater and am ready to start another. All of your videos are great - concise, helpful, everything needed to finish a project included. Perfect.
I always see all of the comments, regardless of the age of the video. :) Thank you for the note, I'm glad you had such success with your sweater!
I have never knitted a sweater or garment of any kind yet; I've been too chicken to try! I'm fairly new at knitting and am just now venturing into hats and lace patterns. I fully intend to try a sweater in the near future! the gauge and sizing does put some fear into me though! yarn can be so expensive to make terrible mistakes and end up having to toss the garment. thank you so much for your videos! You're an excellent teacher and I have learned so much watching yours! I watch you almost exclusively now because of the clear and excellent video teaching!

Thank you. This is the best tutorial for sweater that i've watched on youtube.
Yes, you should easily be able to get the correct gauge (tension) with DK weight yarn. It's very close to sport weight.
First of all you are probably one of the best knitters I go to , to help me and second all your videos are very helpful
So glad you posted this! I am a newbie to knitting and am ready to challenge myself to knit something besides the "safe" scarves I've been making. With this tutorial I am not afraid!
Yes - you can make a sweater that way, the same way you can sew together pieces of fabric like that to make a tunic. But your best bet is to go on the Ravelry website and find a pattern that fits this bill...then someone else will already have figured out the cast-on numbers, the yarn amounts necessary, the neck-hole opening, etc. Finding a pattern will also allow you to see what the finished item looks like before you start knitting.
I am currently finishing my 3rd.this is a super easy to understand pattern
What yarn did you use? I see her recommended yarn is discontinued.
@lisarayone Great! Glad to hear it! Just two weeks ago I released another woman's sweater pattern that is sized to 3X. (This one is a cardigan/letterman's jacket.) I'll keep sizing from XS to 3X, don't worry! :)
That sweater is beautiful. This is a sweater I would like to make. I am going to give it a try.
Morgan - yes, as long as you're getting the correct gauge, you can use any yarn, to make this sweater as warm and heavy as you like. Good luck! :)
Thank you! I needed to see how the raglan sleeve worked on my cardigan pattern, it now makes perfect sense.
Thanks so much! I always thought knitting a sweater would be an impossible feat, but after watching this video I feel like my days of knitting simple scarves may be over.
This pattern is written to use sport-weight yarn. It is unlikely that you could get the correct gauge with worsted (stitches per inch), and if you did, it would be a very thick and stiff sweater. So, no - I'd stick with sport-weight.
Hi Lindsey - yes, if you're comfortable using the magic loop method of circular knitting, you can complete these sleeves with circular needles instead of DPNs. If you aren't familiar with magic loop knitting, you can watch my video called "Knitting Help - Simple Magic Loop". You can search for it on my channel page - sorry, I can't give you a link here in the comments.
Thanks for the note! Yes, if you wanted a less-lacy (less summery) look to this sweater, you could substitute the yarn-over increases for Make 1 (M1) or knit-front-back (KFB) increases. I have videos for both of those techniques if you need help with them.
You make it look so easy!!! I started on your dishcloth yesterday and that is so much fun to do. I might feel courageous enough to do this sweater in a few months (after some more cowls and scarfs). Your clips are a joy to watch! Well filmed and the sound is really good too!
Thanks!
Hi Amy - altering a sweater pattern isn't a quick or simple thing, but I think I can help you. I suggest that you search for sweater patterns on the Ravelry website, and look for pattern photos showing women with your similar shape. That way you'll know that the designer has made something that will flatter your figure (she probably designed the sweater to flatter her own figure!). This is frequently how I find patterns for myself. Good luck!
This video is so very helpful! Thank you so much! The discussion on determining the gauge was very insightful and will help me so much in understanding patterns I was getting frustrated when the things I was making were way to big for me.
you have come a long way with your tutorials..
thank you. learnt so much it's been 1 year for me...
2017
Yes, it can be done - but I would only recommend that for really experienced knitters. It would be much easier to follow a pattern with shaping already built in. :)
Right - I have never noticed a difference in my gauge between flat knitting and knitting in-the-round, so I always just knit flat swatches. If you are concerned about a gauge difference, there are no tricks for knitting a swatch in-the-round, I'm afraid. You just have to cast-on enough stitches to fit on your circular needles and get to work. Some people prefer to just start knitting the project and checking their gauge after a couple of inches.
Amazing. Thank you from an ever so slightly advanced beginner knitter!
Sport and DK weights are very similar, and I'm sure you can get gauge with sport weight. The only danger would be that the fabric might be airier (looser), and it might make your top a bit see-through. If I were you, I would try knitting up a sample with the sport yarn, and see how it looks. Good luck!
The links work fine on iPads - it may be the way you have things set up between PDFs and the UA-cam app. Regardless, at the end of each of the links in the pattern is a time code to a spot in the video (this video here you commented on). Just fast-forward the video to the time coded spot in the link, and you'll be at the right spot in the video for that section of the pattern.
Hi Staci, I have started the sweater with the correct gauge (a small victory for me) using KnitPicks Cotlin yarn which is DK instead of sport. My knit looks more open and airy than yours, although possibly wearable without need for a camisole. I am adding 1-2 more rows of increases get a more comfortable fit under the arm. I've never made a sweater before and I'm nervous, but this pattern is so easy! I'll post some pictures on Ravelry when I'm done. :o)
@Aubreykianna My stitch markers are from a shop on Etsy - the store's name is "rycrafty". She is currently on vacation so her shop is closed, but I'm sure she'll be selling stitch markers again soon!
Funny you should ask - I am currently working on a new sweater design that is knit flat, then seamed. The pattern and video tutorial should be released Summer 2012.
Excellent tutorial
YOU are an excellent teacher. I enjoyed your video very much. I am definitely going to knit this sweater. I am so glad I stumbled onto your site. Thanks again. -j
wow you are an amazing teacher patient and so eloquent Thank you so much😘
@MICHELLEEVANS33 You'll have a mess on your hands if you wash the yarn in the machine before you knit with it!
Thank you so much!! I've been looking for a good tutorial on how to make a sweatet and you explain everything so clearly! Thank you!
Fabivaca - the pattern is the written instructions you need to knit the item you see in the video. My videos are here to help you through the trickier parts of the written pattern. If you've never knit anything before, I suggest you start with my video tutorial and pattern called "Learn to Knit Your First Scarf". That tutorial will teach you the basics, and get you going on your first project.
You are the best. I learn a lot from you.you are a good teacher
I enjoy your videos because you're the only person I saw knit your way, and I'm eager to try it. :-)
Dror - if you want to make a sweater with a different neckline, I recommend finding a sweater pattern that you like, and following that pattern, instead of trying to modify this one. You can find tons of sweater patterns on the Ravelry website.
Hmm...I'm a fast knitter with plenty of time to devote to knitting, so this sweater only took me a few days. My best guess is that it would take the average knitter (knitting in the evenings) a few weeks to finish.
This sweater is bound-off "in pattern", meaning it is a K/P bind-off, to match the ribbing at the cuffs of the sleeves, and the bottom of the sweater.
another question from the novice. How do I adapt the pattern if I don't want the "holey" look. What do I substitute for YO?
Thank you so much! Clearly explained and well videoed. I love your website and have signed up. Happy knitting :-)
No need to fear - if you don't get the correct gauge in your first swatch, just change needle sizes and try again. Once you get correct gauge, you can knit confidently, knowing your sweater will fit!
I’m a beginner knitter and I want to knit a summer top with a picture in the front 😳😊...thanks for this great tutorial!!!!
Would you please knit a seamless dog sweater because I would like to knit one for my toy puddle that way it is a good start on learning how to knit sweater. Please consider this. Thanks......
It is important to wash and block your swatch, because you will want to know what size the sweater will be after it is washed, and you want to knit it according to that size. The only way it would be unnecessary to wash and block your swatch is if you never intended to wash the finished sweater itself - which I can't imagine ever happening. :)
I just purchased this pattern and I am so excited to try it!
Thanks so much Staci!
Can you please do more tutorials like this :-)
It's great ....thank you
Claire - are you working from the written pattern? The pattern explains where to place the markers for different sizes. Other than that, you just slide the marker from the left needle to the right when you come to one. :)
thank you ,your video is so helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i will try to make a sweater with your help!!
rena valt of course
rena valt u
Thank you! I love the way the sweater looks.
I'll just stay with the sport weight and follow the pattern in my size. Thanks for all that you do :)
Staci, thanks so much for your great videos. Oh and wow, I adore your hair style -- very chic!
I'm think of making this sweater 4 myself but I wanna use the seed stitch design u did 4 the Toddler Tunic Sweater but keep the yarn over increases 4 this sweater. I think that would work well 4 me! Wish me luck!
@MICHELLEEVANS33 This pattern is listed as appropriate for "advanced beginners" - meaning someone who is comfortable with the basic stitches. If you need review of knit, purl, casting-on, and binding-off (the basics), you can search my channel page for a playlist called "The Basics". That will get you started. Or you can knit my "Learn to Knit Your First Scarf" pattern, which will do the same thing. Hope that helps!
Hi Kathleen - all of the information you need to knit the sweater (like the cast-on numbers for the different sizes) are available in the pattern. You can purchase and instantly download your copy of the pattern by following the link just below the video, in the video description field.
Please help- I did this in reverse where I knitted the torso first. I'm really confused on whether to bind off the torso and then knit the sleeves and the neck seperately...and then sew them onto the torso. Or whether to knit the torso and the neck together, bind off and then knit the sleeves seperately and sew it on. If so, how do I do this? I am really stuck on this. Could you possibly do a video on this? I really want to get this done in time for my mom's birthday. Please help, thank you.
Are you able to make a video hat shows how to make a typical, comfy, loose christmas sweater. I would really appreciate it. Thanks
Hi Staci! Great tutorials, probably the best on UA-cam. How do you close up the little holes under the arms of a sweater that one can get while knitting. Thank you.
Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/Pc4EiYS17GQ/v-deo.html
thanks so much for this excellent tutorial!!!
I finally got the raglan increase right!!! 🤗🤗🤗
As usual, so well explained. Looking forward to making this summer sweater :)
How can I make this jumper to flatter my apple shape (small bust with large belly)? Where would I start the waist shaping, horizontal darts or short row. I know these techniques are beyond the basic pattern but I would like the jumper to flatter my shape.
I have attempted to get this sweater going so many times I’ve given up counting. I do love your tutorials and I am continually learning. This however is not a beginner or learn to knit project of any kind. This sweater has zapped my confidence. I guess I need thicker wool and bigger needles☹️
I'm sorry you're having trouble...if you're working from the written pattern and you have questions, you can always email me at staci@verypink.com, I'm always here to answer questions on my patterns. This is an "advanced beginner" project, appropriate for people who already have the basics down (knit stitch, purl stitch, simple increases and decreases), and who are ready to start a first sweater.
OOOMG this is such a great video!!! Thank you so much!!!! I'm about to start making this sweater now, but I'm going to make it more of a long tunic type and I'm going to wear it with leggings. It should look great! Thank you again! Your teaching method is clear as a blue sky, keep it up!
I noticed that you knit a flat swatch in stockinette (k on rs, p on ws), but when you knit in the round you only knit. wouldn't you need to work a gauge swatch in the round to make it more accurate? If so, how would you knit a round swatch?
I like that! Thank you very much. But I think that if knitting in the round, that is difficult to accurate to fit body. Because I crocheted like it.
If i don't want to knit a fitted sweater, but a shapeless one similar to that of a hoodie, is it possible to knit two long rectangles for the front and the back, sew them together with a tapestry needle and yarn leaving two 'holes' for the sleeves? Then use a circular needle to knit the sleeves and sew them to the body piece?
For the collar part, I would start binding off from the middle, and bind off additional stitches each row I knit, so a circular shape could be formed.
Could I use your pattern and make these changes or is it best to use a pattern that as waist shaping. Can you make available a jumper pattern knitted in the round with shaping?
Can you do a V neck or a deep round like your black sweater the same way? Thanks
I have never knitted or anything like it before, but I have been challenged to knitt a sweater for a friend. This technique does not seem to be that complicated and I think I might be able to do it. But then again I have never done anything like this before and dont know how to measure the difficulty. Is there any advice that would be helpful for a guy like me, and what material would I need to do a project like this?
can you do a v neck sweater top down please
Yes, please make a fabulous V neck top!
Could I use a dk yarn and adjust my needle size to get the same gauge? or Should I stay with the sport weight? What do you think?
Perfect! Thanks por the video! Now I'll be able to knit something to my nephews! Beijos e abraços para você!
What wool it that were do I get the pattern what size needle thank you so much
You have made this look so easy. How beginner friendly would you say this is? I have tons of crochet garments under my belt and have a working understanding of everything in this video with the exception I haven’t used DPNs yet.
I designed this pattern and tutorial to be "advanced beginner" friendly. Like, good for a first sweater if you already have basic knitting skills. But too advanced for someone who is still learning knit, purl, k2tog, ask, etc.
I have question on the markers. You used the marker of the beginning of the round as one of the markers to increase. Do you do the yarn over one stich away at the end of the row also? Like YO K1 SM K1 YO where the marker of the beginning of the round is?
how many yards of yarn are typically needed for a sweater? I'm thinking something between weights 4-6. Thanks. Love this tutorial.
Hello! i'm just a beginner and i have knitted scarves and hats and stuff and i decided to do this but i' sorry i don't understand how to use the markers? so can you please help me? thnx xxx :D
Thank you very much
Thanks. Getting ready to start mine in the next couple of days :)
Can you show how to increase a stitches for half fisherman knitting in round please
Sorry - it sounds like you are working from a different pattern...I would consult the pattern you're using, and/or visit your local yarn shop for help. Your question is more than I can answer here. Good luck!
I would love to try this pattern i have several cotton yarns will they work most are dk weight
I made a sweater for a friend and the chest size is a little tight. Is there a way to stretch it/adjust it a bit to be bigger? Its a crew neck top down sweater
Hii I am shivalini I saw your designs its really amazing but I wanted to know about the hand knitting blouses please can you update it for me as well as for others...I am looking forward for it ...I will appreciate it if you can upload it ...its a humble request thankyou ...!
what? you said this is for beginners? what is the difference between a pearl stitch and a regular stitch? what is raglin?
I love your knitting style but I must say YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL 😍 AND SMART TOO
