I absolutely LOVE this song and as Amber said you can absolutely lose yourself in the journey. So many fantastic Supertramp songs though. Too many to say this is my favourite. I guess if I had to put some sort of order on them it would be: (1) Give a Little Bit, (2) The Logical Song, (3) School, (4) Dreamer and (5) It's Raining Again. I return to these again and again.

@@briandonohue2502 If Jay and Amber want to go REALLY deep into prog rock they could review Rush - "2112" , Mike Oldfield - "Tubular Bells" or Renaissance - "Song for all Seasons" but maybe having a video of an hour or so (including comments) would be too much work to make or too long for people to listen through! Why is it scary or surprising that good music last through the years. Just like paintings and sculptures, music is an art form and great artists are remembered. Right now, while you read this, thousands of musicians are playing music written centuries ago, there's even a chance that human invented music(Neanderthal flute) before they developed a language. We who wear the ears, are responsible to "feed" them the good stuff. Don't let an algorithm decide for you what you must listen to. I would argue that most of the music crap we are fed from the medias these days is somewhat the same as Trump's NFTs for visual art, cheap ,shallow, plagiarized and unimaginative.

Seriously, you two need to listen to the whole album in one sitting. I was very young when this album came out, but I bought it. I was 7. I really didn’t “get” everything that they were trying to convey, but the music did take me away from where I was at the time. It was amazing. The best distraction from a stressful (not entirely in a bad way) childhood. I was raised in a very strict home on military bases. Dad was often away fir training exercises. We were often on bases isolated from cities and “the real world” populated by homes of civilians. If we didn’t move in any given year, most of our friends did. There was little to no contact with the extended family. But my parents let us have our escapes from daily stresses by giving us unrestricted use of base and community libraries, and both my brother and I were given radios for our rooms. The music was the best. The era I grew up in was filled with such variety and such amazingly creative artists. The reason I started watching these reaction videos is to see the joy and wonder on your faces. It takes me back to not only when I discovered the songs, but the moment that the meanings “clicked in” for me. Thanks for posting the videos. I look forward to seeing them daily.

When I was 13 in 1974, a friend's family here in Canada had a pizza restaurant. One of the restaurant employees just happened to be the sister of a Supertramp band member. She had her brother send a copy of the album signed by the band that she gave to my friend. At the time the album was only released in the UK and it was almost three years later that the re-release became an international hit. It's possible that when we used to listen to my friends copy, we were the only ones in North America doing so. We would hang out and play the entire album repeatedly. It was (and is) so good! I suspect my old friend Neil still has that signed copy after 49 years but the album itself is likely worn out.

Supertramp was sort of prog, but with an interesting jazzy twist. This whole album is brilliant (as others have said). This was a great opening track...also love Asylum, Rudy an the title track Crime of the Century.
I was fortunate enough to see them live after the album came out - still remember it so clearly...lights go down and opening with that haunting harmonica...epic

Now you're dipping into some classic Art. Pretty soon you'll be listening to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Relayer + Court of the Crimson King! (crossing fingers) [edit] This is a GREAT album to experience Supertramp's more "progressive" side. "Rudy", "If Everyone Was Listening", "Hide In Your Shell", "Asylum" + the title track are ALL works of genius. The two "poppier" songs you've already heard, I believe - "Dreamer" + "Bloody Well Right". It's simply a Masterwork from start to finish - a real rarity in the world of Rock.

NOTHING like that would be recorded today.

My favourite group all-time from my favourite album of theirs - a true masterpiece lyrically and musically from the opening song School to the closer Crime of the Century. School, lyrically, is serious social commentary. It is followed immediately by another all-time classic Bloody Well Right. As with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (1973), to get the full sonic and lyrical impact of the album Crime of the Century (1974) should be listened to in its entirety in one sitting. Please do all the songs off Crime at some point.

Supertramp is obviously awesome, and this song is no exception.
I've started teaching this schoolyear, at the age of 51. Honestly, I loooove it. It turns out it's my dream job! The feeling I get when I realize I got through to a student, and he/she 'gets' it, is so amazing!!
That said, there's one quote from Neil deGrasse Tyson that keeps playing in my head: "the reason kids cheat on tests is because the system values grades more than the student values learning".
I think that's soo true. The exams and grading are, imho, an unfortunate tool for trying to determine which students have absorbed the knowledge, and a very rudimentary tool for it's purpose imho.
I've been thinking about how to optimize the 'learning', but it's a hard nut to crack, because no two students are the same.
Anyways, I guess that's the reason why this song hits so hard for me. It's about learning what you need to learn, and what you want to learn. And at the same time trying to find yourself, finding your passion, finding a purpose.
I'm 51, and I guess I'm only now realizing that being a teenager or young adult is not easy at all!

Coincidentally, one of my grandsons put this on yesterday. He's far too young to appreciate it so when I saw this was today's reaction, I just had to listen to it without any distraction. Somewhere, stored away, I have the Crime of the Century in vinyl - great album. My grandson's mother (my daughter) "discovered" Supertramp's Crime of the Century in her teens and loved it. Hopefully, one day my grandsons will also enjoy them. 😄
SUGGESTION: Another one I listened to the other day - if you are ever pushed to get that third reaction in on the one day and you want two and half minutes of chill music, completely different and evocative of the Hippy '70s vibe, try Ananda Shankar's 'Snow Flower' - no vocals; just some chill Indian sitar-based music.

Love Supertramp and so pleased you two are discovering their greatness. Also, excellent insights Amber. As a retired teacher of 40 years, you're exactly right. American schools were created to prepare children for the factory system in the mid-1800s and not much has changed since then. It was all part of the dumbing down of America - no individuality, no creativity. Schools, at least those behind the scenes, only wanted to create little robots of the state. Sad but true. I did my part to change that, but I'm only one person.
