      That piano riff starting about 2/3 of the way through is one of those pieces of music that would have been at home in any era ... it's something mozart could have composed and wouldn't have been out of place. I know on my first listen I thought ... i must have heard that before because the notes just make perfect sense; they belong together in that order. They were meant to be ... they existed in the universe and were just waiting for someone to bring them to life.

      Very Nice, Gents. I really enjoyed that and have to give an S to the album and for your reaction/analysis-breakdown. It's just an almost perfect album from the songwriting and arrangement to the musicianship and production. My favorite track is "Rudy" and "Hide in Your Shell" is the 3rd song, Alex. Thanks and Cheers!!

      Sure that you realise now that this was not their first album, there were two before this and each had a few good songs but neither had the strength of this one which was S tier as you noted. They did not stop there however and the next two albums, Crisis what Crisis, and Even in the quietest moments are equally as good and argued by some fans to be better. The sound then changed a bit to try to get US airplay on Breakfast in America from which you have heard two or three tracks. I really don’t want to push you to break up the next two albums as they both sound best in vinyl sides at least but if you have to listen to one song then you cannot skip ‘ Fools overture’ from Even in the Quietest moments it’s a masterpiece within a classic.

    This is the first album I ever bought. Likely my first actual purchase outside of candy, pop or salmon eggs. Pure fluke. I was about 8 years old, on vacation with the family when I was drawn to this hole in the wall record store. Through their speakers, they were piping out 'Bloody Well Right' and I bit hard. As a little kid the chorus was so candid and humorous, infectious. I walked up to the counter and asked if I could buy the album they were playing. What a stroke of luck! I've never not owned it since (at least for any length of time).
    The scene from Platoon with Willem Dafoe comes to mind.
    Elias: First time?
    Chris: Yeah.
    Elias: Then the worm has definitely turned for you man.

    Watching music reactions on UA-cam I'm starting to really feel how lucky I was to grow up in this era of music. I just watched a reaction by the Bros to the Day on the,Green version of Free bird (I know you guys did this one too). I commented on how many Days on the Green we went to back in the 70's and 80's. For example, in 1978 Day on the Green #3 the lineup was Aerosmith, Foreigner, Pat Travers, Van Halen, and AC/DC. I'm pretty sure the ticket was less than $15 (I'm thinking $12 but it was a long time ago). It was an incredible time to grow up and we quite literally saw bands of this caliber nearly every weekend. On the other hand you have such incredible access digitally to so much great historical music; we didn't really have that. I'm glad you young guys can appreciate the music I grew up with and love so much; it makes me appreciate it even more!

    Boys! You have had thé experience I had at age 14. I then did not know what was coming over me. English is not my native language and at that age I mostly enjoyed the sounds, not getting the content at most parts at all. During the following years when the music of this album became known to me from note to note, slowly the message of each verse unraveled to me. This album was a discovery to me and it has taken years, litterally. It is my sheltering place when feeling off, it is my happy place when I am on a high. It is just so much to me. I am thrilled about your reactions and how you were overcome by this splendid album. There is a solid story about how this album came to be and it is easy to look up. Their third album, after the first two didn't actually do much. Man! There is also a live recording of a concert from 1974 included in the remastered CD version. You will be surprised how accurate they re-created this 'PLAY'. Another suggestion: the live album Paris, from 1979, emerged after the release of Breakfast In America. 6 of the songs from Crime feature on that one as well. The rendition of the titletrack will blow your mind! It was really a joy to listen to this album with you guys. It made me aware of some details I had taken for granted along the long, long way..... Love to you both. You are doing a good thing. ♥️

      @@robertcartier5088 yes, looking back it was, as it was with many many great albums that I first got to know by the instrumental aspect and later on by the lyrics. It was the time of many, many masterpieces that ultimately became timeless classics. On the other hand it was my music that taught me English on a whole different level than what I could have learned in school! An artist like Kate Bush forced me to think, wonder and explore before I could understand a bit of what she had produced. Singing in metafors, like she uses to is very very difficult stuff. But what a thrill it is! I like the challenge.

    • @robertcartier5088
      @robertcartier5088 3 роки тому +1

      @@j.k.1963 Indeed! I've always said, if one wants to learn a language one needs a good reason. Falling in love with someone who doesn't understand you is a great motivator... Just like loving the music enough to learn it's lyrical nuances.
      Your story made me suggest some music today that I wouldn't normally suggest to an American. I referenced a band from Montreal, and said that the album was so good that it might be worth learning French for! I even added that listening to the music even now, without understanding the vocals might be a motivator! The album is "Harmonium"(1974) by Harmonium. (Folk/Prog)
      Anyway, thanks for the reply!
      Cheers from Canada!

    In the instrumental section of Rudy there is the background announcing the train leaving "platform 2 for Bristol Temple Meads calling at Reading, Didcot, Swindon, Chippenham, Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads." I went to University of Bristol in the mid '80's and took the same train many times. Quite the connection to one of my fave songs.

    Crisis, What Crisis? and Even in the Quietest Moments would round out the best albums from Supertramp. Breakfast in America was predominately a Roger Hodgeson production. I saw this band live in the mid-'80s after Roger left the band. They chose to not play any songs from Breakfast in America and their performance was so amazing, I didn't notice anything missing.

    SO glad you reacted to Crime of the Century! This was another album that was the soundtrack to my teenage years. This was their third album released in September 1974. This album hit #4 in Canada (where I'm from). Supertramp were hugely popular in the 70s here. Their next album Crisis? What Crisis? is also excellent, with a similar theme running through it again so it again could be seen as a concept album. You should listen to that as well. Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies were the composers and vocalists. I always listened to this album from beginning to end. That being said, School, Hide In Your Shell, Dreamer and Crime of the Century are my favourites. Congrats on 90K Here's to 100K soon!
