Ah, Supertramp. Lostt one of my best friends last year to cancer and THIS group will always remind me of him. Was his favorite back in the day. R.I.P. Steve! You're still here in my heart. ✌
Supertramp has two lead songwriters & singers, with VERY different kinds of songs. I used to love Roger's songs, & still do, but I've come to appreciate Rick's gravelly singing, & his piano playing, outstanding. There's a live version of "School" I've seen around UA-cam recently, that might be fun to do if you want to see what the band looks like. The piano is fire, Jay will love.
'School' is definitely one of my 2 favorites - the other being 'Rudy' - but the live versions of both lack the impact of the studio versions - the start of School makes you jump the first time you hear it.
Totally agree! The constant tension between Rick’s bluesier style and Roger’s poppier, hippie-flavored approach made Supertramp so special. Roger (I think it was him, anyway) once said that Supertramp’s songs were basically an extended musical conversation between the two of them
@@yogibarista2818 I agree, the studio version is much more polished. But sometimes it's fun to actually SEE the artists. (I saw them in concert in April 1979, on their Breakfast in America tour. Probably the most iconic 12 strings acoustic guitar song of that era. From the same album, you should check out *Lover boy* , it has a fun story and all the good stuff we like from Supertramp. If you do, make sure you let it play 'til the end, don't be tricked by the long silence.
Absolutely agree "Lover Boy" isn't particularly well known but, like you said, everything is in there. That's the one I always blast when I play the album in the car. That and "Fools Overture". Great suggestion.
Roger Hodgson has a hit solo song with "Had a Dream (Sleeping with the Enemy)". Lyrically, it's pretty deep and it rocks a little harder than most Supertramp songs. You might want to give that one a listen.
Thanks for paying tribute to my favorite band. Roger Hodgson was the vocalist on this classic, Rick Davies is the deeper voiced vocalist on the other classic tracks.
i've noticed that too. is it a concerted effort to avoid it,or are there just more popular supertramp songs keeping them from it? either way, you're "bloody well right"!
This song was actually used in the background. In the gas Station scene in Superman the Movie (1978). When Lois Lane is in a gas station to buy some gas for her rent a car.
One of my favorite songs, I bought this for a grouphome 4 6 ultra special need ladies, as I left it after 4 years of managing it , it said everything I felt
"Take The Long Way Home" and "Goodbye Stranger" are my two favourites but they do have a lot of great songs. Regarding the voice, the band has two different lead singers and they have very different voices.
Old Supertramp takes me back to my late teens, sitting in the park with my friends..hanging out - cool vibes. Old Supertramp is best. Albums 'Crime of the Century', 'Even in the Quitest Moments' are their best work. Masterpieces. Explore both these albums cover to cover and you'll never be the same. The Long Way Home album was good...but too commercial for an old fan like me. Two different lead singers and writers in the band...so two distinct sounds. I've seen them live at least 5 times since the early 70's, solo concerts, and I'd go back again and again. Supertramp lives on!
Well... thanks for this, guys. Always love me some Supertramp! A very uplifting tempo, and, as Roger Hodgson sings "There's so much that we need to share, So send a smile and show you care" This is on their greatest hits album, yet you have to explore their more complex recordings... I am still patiently waiting for you to discover "School", and "Crime Of The Century", and "From Now On", and their epic "Fool's Overture"
When his voice comes in gradually, at first it just sounds like another wind instrument or synthesizer. It raises the hairs on your neck. Then there's that ending.
Super trump was extremely popular late 70’s early 80’s. The Breakfast In America album - entire album was great! This really launched them into a huge, very popular band at the time.
Nice to hear you describe Supertramp as unique cos' that's definitely what they were. Don't think you've reacted to "Breakfast in America" yet. Also try "Dreamer" so many great songs. Much love from England 🏴
When the Supertramp Album Breakfast In America came out it was a bowling ball strike knocking all other songs out of the way. With hit after hit. The music industry was so different then and more magical because there wasn't MTV and so much was left to your imagination and emotions.
So, this one is for Amber. Another song with a lot of sax! I believe it's a new artist as well. I think you will love it. It is Billy Vera and the Beaters and the song is At This Moment. Keep up the great work! Love watching!
"Bloody Well Right", for the best sax solo of any of their songs, as well an excellent guitar with heavy wah pedal, and "Dreamer", for that tasty Wurlitzer electric piano, (also present in Bloody well Right)!
Here's a Thin Lizzy - Supertramp connection. The Drummer of Supertramp Bob Siebenberg is a brother in law to Scott Gorham one of the guitarists of Thin Lizzy!
There are so many songs by supertramp to choose from. There are already so many suggestions. Here is a song from the same album, Even in the Quietest Moments.
"Give a Little Bit" is the opening track off their 1977 album, 'Even in the Quietest Moments.' It begins with Roger Hodgson strumming a 12-string acoustic guitar. Not an overload of complex lyrics, however, as with many of their songs, a message of love and giving. 😍 I was fortunate enough to see them in Milwaukee in 1977. My friends and I were SECOND ROW, right in front of Rick Davies (the other lead vocalist) who plays a wonderful electric piano and other keyboards. The horns (and backing vocals and keyboards) are provided by the multi talented John Helliwell. Three other outstanding tracks are the title track, "Downstream" and the final cut, "Fool's Overture." Don't stop now, y'all...DIVE DEEPER!! 🎼🎷🎶
You are such good and kind people Rob and Amber. What I would do to be your neighbors and just talk about music. Thank you so very much for sharing your love and passion for music. Keep up the great work!
