One thing I love about this movie is how it really shows how strong female friendships can be and also the inverse when it becomes toxic as hell. So often in women centered stories everyone might fight but "sisterhood save the day". Which is nice but sometimes someone's unhinged and staying in that dynamic even if it might kill you feels like the only choice so I'm glad they showed the more toxic side of female friendships.
I think those films (and Jawbreakers) are hard to compare to each other: "The Craft" is a fantasy story, "Heathers" is a black comedy with societal messages, "Jawbreakers" is a black comedy with no societal message (and I didn't like the ending, personally), and Mean Girls is the most different by being more light-hearted while still sharing a message.

I had no idea until years later that Robin Tunney was wearing a wig as Sarah. She'd shaved her hair off for "Empire Records", so had a pixie cut during her audition. The director stated that he'd be happy to have Tunney sport her real hair, but the studio insisted on the wig.
Fun fact Nancy the "crazy" one the actress for her was actually very much into spirituality and the occult so she gave alot of insight to the methods and stuff behind the acting as a witch to the other actors. Or at least that's what they said in a interview
All four of the girls correspond to a certain element, which befits their respective personalities. Sarah is Earth, since she's the most grounded and mature, Nancy is Air, since she's the wildest and most unpredictable, Bonnie suits Fire, since she was burned by one, and is compassionate, and Rochelle is Water, as she's gentle, soothing, and goes with the flow.
Switch Bonnie and Nancy. Bonnie is air, and Nancy is fire. Bonnie has seer qualities, she's the first one to notice Sarah's power, Nancy is totally out of control and destructive.

Still doesn't erase the fact that what she's being put through is shitty as fuck, but it's nice to know she has at least one castmate seemingly on her side. Idk about how it was back in the day though, and if they truly did nothing that's not excusable.
My theory for The Craft was always that Bonnie, Nancy, and Rochelle initially had to siphon their magic from Sarah, a true witch. Prior to creating a coven with her, they likely were just doing what Agatha All Along would describe as "analog magic"--simple tricks with little inherent magic. Invoking Manon led to Nancy finally actually gaining her own magic, so the three of them technically didn't need Sarah anymore. But fucking with Sarah led to her binding Nancy, which inevitably led to Bonnie and Rochelle going back to square one magical-wise because they don't have anyone to siphon from anymore.
I find it so crazy that the actress who plays Nancy is the same actress who played Dorothy in Return to Oz! Quite a difference between roles! (The actress' name is Fairuza Balk)

So the snake is normally seen as a symbol of transformation and rebirth 😊 Also the Times Three Rule is usually only attributed to Wicca, not so much other Pagan or Witchcraft lines of practice. There are ways that spells can rebound if done improperly or broken, but other practices does not have that hard and fast rule.

I think the reason she got her karma like the rest was cause her initial intentions were to not hate Laura despite Laura hating her and fell back on those to humiliate Laura the way Laura humiliates her. And whilst, yes, I don't blame Rochelle for getting back at Laura a little heavier, I think Mano saw that as like dabbling in darker magick for petty revenge. Like with how Bonnie said she wanted to be beautiful inside and out, Mano could've sensed deep within herself, she only wanted to look good instead of being a good person who's also pretty. You see how it didn't take hardly any time at all for her become full of herself despite wanting to also be the same beautiful on the inside. She truly only wanted to look like a good person because she also becomes really mean after the spell. The same with Rochelle's nonchalant behaviour after humiliating Laura and acting like she also didn't do something wrong because Laura was being racist, the same way Laura is when doing the same to Rochelle, almost like she's becoming the type of person she doesn't like and trying not to acknowledge it despite that little voice in the back her head probably telling her what she did to Laura was no different than how Laura treats her every day and that that anger and resentment can turn you into that horrible person that's constantly hurting you (becoming the worst version of yourself basically and pretending everything's fine). But let me know if I'm like wayy off cause I could be looking into it too deep, being a witch myself, I know that karma exists and whatever hateful, power-hungry energy you give out can come back to bite you in the ass like it did with Nancy but on a more realistic scale.

I think they convinced themselves they did it with Magick but the man was literally tweakin in the middle of the road, holding a snake....what were they expecting to happen lol but even if they did have a hand in it, yeah, they all just kinda watched and ran away lmfao they were all awful teenagers to begin with. Sarah was the only one that actually came out of it level headed and saw through the sparkles, she realised how much power they had and that they were essentially abusing it and that's why their spells backfired and invoking Mano backfired on them. I think Mano only helped Sarah out cause she wasn't a negative witch using her powers to get back at people or kill people, she basically had no intentions of hurting herself or anyone else which is technically how a true witch should be.
Bonnie and Rochelle truly didn't deserve to get that magic reversed badly on them. But I also like that they became bad people on their own and not because of Nancy.

I love this movie and I love showing them to friends that have never seen it before, but I always warn them about the triggers. Nancy is my favorite and I like to imagine a future where she gets out of that institution, amends for her mistakes and finds peace. Spending her whole life suffering locked away seems horrible. On another note, one of my most treasured items is a T-shirt Fairuza (who played Nancy) was seeling on her website to raise money to save wolves near where she lives. The shirt as a print an artist drew of Nancy and it is so beautiful. I wear this shirt almost every week. I love it so much. And it came with an autographed polaroid. 🥺

10:12 Oh come on, mom, two-and-half feet is hardly 'high'. 😆 The WORM that burrowed itself into hundreds of thousands of teenage girls after they saw this film, I swear, I thought Hocus Pocus was a seminal film about witches, but WHOA did this thing prove me wrong. My little sister did that "light as a feather, stiff as a board" nonsense during a sleepover about 3 days after seeing this film and it scared the hell out of our parents. They were unsuccessful, duh, but it didn't matter; if Hocus Pocus made witchcraft seem fun and family friendly, films like The Craft and The Crucible made witchcraft suddenly dangerous again. It's not to say that the film made every character into a stereotypical 'bad witch'. Now, Fairuza Balk is FUN crazy but not FUNNY crazy, she has a ton of infectious energy and MASSIVE screen presence. You said it, she stole every scene she was in. The only reason I remember certain films like 'The Waterboy' and 'The Island of Dr. Moreau' is because she was in them. But again, she is fun crazy because we KNOW people that are that unhinged in real life. It makes for scary stuff and a good antagonist in the film. But I never found myself laughing at what she said or did because it was funny, only ever because it made me uneasy and a little freaked out as I watched her go from menacing and quirky, to genuinely insane and dangerous. That, beyond anything else, is what freaked a lot of folks out about this film and the movement it helped fuel; what genuinely disturbed/angry/ill people do when they finally have the power to change their surroundings. That's kinda what The Craft and The Crucible are, at their core; stories about power dynamics, how they effect seemingly normal people and what happens when a marginalized/ostracized minority finally upset those dynamics. The Crucible is a much more historically fascinating film and better acted IMO, but it wasn't NEARLY as popular or pop-culturally influential as The Craft. Nancy has never had REAL power until Robin show's up, and then suddenly, she gets a taste of something as intoxicating as it is volatile...and she's hooked. Robin wasn't looking for power, she wasn't even really looking to be a witch, really, not when she first arrives at St. Benedict's. She represents power tempered with naivete and, to a degree, virtue. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, she doesn't want revenge...she wants to be loved, or at least pursued. It's vanity, sure, but no more so than any teenage girl. And just like Nancy and Bonnie and Rochelle, the power goes all Jonathan Swift and proceeds to it's ironic and ludicrous conclusion. But whereas Nancy needs the power to feel...anything, really, loved, successful, safe, in-control of her own life, all the things she could not achieve on her own, Robin doesn't need to maim or injure or kill anyone to achieve her goal. She realizes how her power can be used for evil when she see's what it does to Chris (and then what Nancy does to finish Chris), causing her to pull back. Ultimately, yes, she is the stronger witch--and demonstrates it--when forced to defend herself. BUT (and I thought the way you did, too, I could have sworn she would return Bonnie and Rochelle to their former selves at the end), in the end, she takes the high road. Where vengeance would have been poetic, she choose saber-rattling instead. She gave them a warning...and left it at that. Nancy let the power control her and it got her thrown into an asylum. Robyn proved that 'the ultimate expression of power...is self control'. Great Vid! I need to re-watch more of these, get myself back into my 90s-Halloween-vibe. Did you ever see Balk's first witch role in "The Worst Witch"? Watch Tim Curry chew the scenery like a wood-chipper with no brakes? It's amazing 80s cheese and I love it to death. I first watched this on Halloween night, in the dark with a thunderstorm and home alone. At one point I thought I saw a big frog jump under my tv cabinet. They show up when it rains, it's normal but not that size and I couldn't find it to put it outside. All that to say this actually spooked me, especially nancy floating menacingly towards the guy (I didn't care he died tho😂). I watched it since without the perfect scary combination, it's a good movie 😊

This movie actually contains a whole bunch of actual spells and rituals used in pagan and witch traditions. The most prominent one being "calling the corners", which is still used by witches today. It's really interesting how they worked real occultist traditions into the movie to make it ad authentic as possible to real world practice.

Your videos are so fun! This is the first time I've run through this movie and could sort of understand how the spellwork of each witch had its good and bad points. They're teens and they're not going to navigate their troubles perfectly, but they're empowered to in the way that they want, to the extent of being harmful in the process. I suppose the telling of that theme was kind of awkward, but I understand the intention. I just couldn't get past seeing the Making Of this movie and a bunch of guy writers, directors etc. talking about how it's about young women discovering their sexuality?? Ick. Bonnie wasn't wrong for wanting to get rid of her scars, but her "narcissism" (poorly presented) showed she wasn't ready to be a Hot Chick without getting careless about everything else. Laura's revenge is sweet, but the blonde bully losing her hair had nothing to do with her ignorance, so it didn't really address the issue. She literally didn't understand why it was happening. And Nancy is perpetuating the abuse she's experienced. Justice for Nancy. Sarah is really cool, I'd be her friend.
I recognized Nancy as Vicki Vallencourt from that annoying Adam Sandler Waterboy movie because of her distinct mouth. The mean girl whose hair fell out, I recognize from Arrested Development and the AD character she plays secretly has Alopecia - which is revealed really late in the show - Arrested Development notoriously has so many random, obscure easter eggs and that’s probably one of them. Like the entire cast eats weird green shaker parmesan cheese and mustard sandwiches as a silly Easter egg about the character Gene Parmesan playing Colonel Mustard in the movie Clue. The British Charlize Theron plot twist was crazy and when you watch the show again you can’t unsee all the clue and it just gets funnier.
I feel like there is many sides to this story. Nancy tried to warn Sarah about the bad guy but instead she did a spell to make him obsessed. Bonnie became a little mean, sure. Rochelle shouldn't feel bad at all for what that girl got imo. Is it wrong that Nancy wanted a better life without that creep(moms husband)? I think 3 of them wanted "normal" outcomes for their life while Sarah used her power on that boy. I don't really know how the ending makes me feel and i grew up watching this movie. As I've gotten older I see it differently

I think Mano only helped Sarah out cause she wasn't a negative witch using her powers to get back at people or kill people, she basically had no intentions of hurting herself or anyone else which is technically how a true witch should be.
Bonnie and Rochelle truly didn't deserve to get that magic reversed badly on them. But I also like that they became bad people on their own and not because of Nancy.

I love this movie and I love showing them to friends that have never seen it before, but I always warn them about the triggers. Nancy is my favorite and I like to imagine a future where she gets out of that institution, amends for her mistakes and finds peace. Spending her whole life suffering locked away seems horrible.
On another note, one of my most treasured items is a T-shirt Fairuza (who played Nancy) was seeling on her website to raise money to save wolves near where she lives. The shirt as a print an artist drew of Nancy and it is so beautiful. I wear this shirt almost every week. I love it so much. And it came with an autographed polaroid. 🥺

The WORM that burrowed itself into hundreds of thousands of teenage girls after they saw this film, I swear, I thought Hocus Pocus was a seminal film about witches, but WHOA did this thing prove me wrong. My little sister did that "light as a feather, stiff as a board" nonsense during a sleepover about 3 days after seeing this film and it scared the hell out of our parents. They were unsuccessful, duh, but it didn't matter; if Hocus Pocus made witchcraft seem fun and family friendly, films like The Craft and The Crucible made witchcraft suddenly dangerous again.
It's not to say that the film made every character into a stereotypical 'bad witch'. Now, Fairuza Balk is FUN crazy but not FUNNY crazy, she has a ton of infectious energy and MASSIVE screen presence. You said it, she stole every scene she was in. The only reason I remember certain films like 'The Waterboy' and 'The Island of Dr. Moreau' is because she was in them. But again, she is fun crazy because we KNOW people that are that unhinged in real life. It makes for scary stuff and a good antagonist in the film. But I never found myself laughing at what she said or did because it was funny, only ever because it made me uneasy and a little freaked out as I watched her go from menacing and quirky, to genuinely insane and dangerous. That, beyond anything else, is what freaked a lot of folks out about this film and the movement it helped fuel; what genuinely disturbed/angry/ill people do when they finally have the power to change their surroundings.
That's kinda what The Craft and The Crucible are, at their core; stories about power dynamics, how they effect seemingly normal people and what happens when a marginalized/ostracized minority finally upset those dynamics. The Crucible is a much more historically fascinating film and better acted IMO, but it wasn't NEARLY as popular or pop-culturally influential as The Craft. Nancy has never had REAL power until Robin show's up, and then suddenly, she gets a taste of something as intoxicating as it is volatile...and she's hooked. Robin wasn't looking for power, she wasn't even really looking to be a witch, really, not when she first arrives at St. Benedict's. She represents power tempered with naivete and, to a degree, virtue. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, she doesn't want revenge...she wants to be loved, or at least pursued. It's vanity, sure, but no more so than any teenage girl. And just like Nancy and Bonnie and Rochelle, the power goes all Jonathan Swift and proceeds to it's ironic and ludicrous conclusion. But whereas Nancy needs the power to feel...anything, really, loved, successful, safe, in-control of her own life, all the things she could not achieve on her own, Robin doesn't need to maim or injure or kill anyone to achieve her goal. She realizes how her power can be used for evil when she see's what it does to Chris (and then what Nancy does to finish Chris), causing her to pull back. Ultimately, yes, she is the stronger witch--and demonstrates it--when forced to defend herself. BUT (and I thought the way you did, too, I could have sworn she would return Bonnie and Rochelle to their former selves at the end), in the end, she takes the high road. Where vengeance would have been poetic, she choose saber-rattling instead. She gave them a warning...and left it at that. Nancy let the power control her and it got her thrown into an asylum. Robyn proved that 'the ultimate expression of power...is self control'.

I first watched this on Halloween night, in the dark with a thunderstorm and home alone.
At one point I thought I saw a big frog jump under my tv cabinet. They show up when it rains, it's normal but not that size and I couldn't find it to put it outside.
All that to say this actually spooked me, especially nancy floating menacingly towards the guy (I didn't care he died tho😂).
I watched it since without the perfect scary combination, it's a good movie 😊
I LOVE this movie so much, but, it would be way better if just like you said, if they weren’t punished, I really love this movie but… they didn’t do anything wrong, I don’t love the ending, they deserved to be happy, even Nancy!! She is crazy, she is toxic, but all of that comes from her home, she turns her magic into bad stuff bc she didn’t have a good home, she was goin insane in that house, and she latched to magic in a toxic way, she deserved a redemption, she deserved happiness, I would’ve liked to yes have consequences and everything but without the wanting to off one of her friends and with a more happy ending, idk, they’re all just good and deserve better
This movie actually contains a whole bunch of actual spells and rituals used in pagan and witch traditions. The most prominent one being "calling the corners", which is still used by witches today. It's really interesting how they worked real occultist traditions into the movie to make it ad authentic as possible to real world practice.
most of these consequences make no sense when i think about them ; Sarah's adds up but the others' don't - Nancy doesn't lose her mind because she invoked Manon but because that's who she becomes with all the power he gives her ~
actually, i just realized Sarah got them with an illusion, so Rochelle and Bonnie's consequences aren't actually real ; they didn't ask for anything like Sarah did -
I watched this movie as an adult and loved it until the girls started fighting. I didn’t understand why the coven fell apart. It devolved in the last act.
Yeah like I expected Nancy to be a problem, but I didn’t think the other two girls were gonna try to kill Sarah too 😭 like what happened to sisterhood??

Your videos are so fun! This is the first time I've run through this movie and could sort of understand how the spellwork of each witch had its good and bad points. They're teens and they're not going to navigate their troubles perfectly, but they're empowered to in the way that they want, to the extent of being harmful in the process. I suppose the telling of that theme was kind of awkward, but I understand the intention. I just couldn't get past seeing the Making Of this movie and a bunch of guy writers, directors etc. talking about how it's about young women discovering their sexuality?? Ick.
Bonnie wasn't wrong for wanting to get rid of her scars, but her "narcissism" (poorly presented) showed she wasn't ready to be a Hot Chick without getting careless about everything else.

I recognized Nancy as Vicki Vallencourt from that annoying Adam Sandler Waterboy movie because of her distinct mouth. The mean girl whose hair fell out, I recognize from Arrested Development and the AD character she plays secretly has Alopecia - which is revealed really late in the show - Arrested Development notoriously has so many random, obscure easter eggs and that’s probably one of them. Like the entire cast eats weird green shaker parmesan cheese and mustard sandwiches as a silly Easter egg about the character Gene Parmesan playing Colonel Mustard in the movie Clue. The British Charlize Theron plot twist was crazy and when you watch the show again you can’t unsee all the clue and it just gets funnier.
I forgot she’s also in Friends and Rachel convinces her to shave her head - that’s hell of a weird type cast. She’s married to Ben Stiller.

I feel like there is many sides to this story. Nancy tried to warn Sarah about the bad guy but instead she did a spell to make him obsessed. Bonnie became a little mean, sure. Rochelle shouldn't feel bad at all for what that girl got imo. Is it wrong that Nancy wanted a better life without that creep(moms husband)? I think 3 of them wanted "normal" outcomes for their life while Sarah used her power on that boy. I don't really know how the ending makes me feel and i grew up watching this movie. As I've gotten older I see it differently
