    "Note to the filmmakers: Margot Robbie is the wrong person to cast if you want to make this point." I love how they just brought the narration back solely for that.

    I loved that Ken was only interested in patriarchy because he thought that it involved horses. Ironically, horses are a maternal animal. Also, my entire cinema cracked up at the unexpected "I'm Just Ken" musical number.

      It’s weird though because many Barbie dolls had horses with them, actually she was probably the one who led to the horse girls trend

    Okay, but Weird Barbie is actually so accurate with how girls play with Barbies. I would throw around some of my dolls, cut their hair, paint on make-up, and I even chewed on the hand of one of them. I also had soap opera level plotlines for them to act out and the drama was messy lol.
    Anyone who believes kids are 100% gentle with their toys has never watched a kid play before.

    Sasha and her pals were designed after the original four Bratz dolls, Barbie's biggest competitor. Sasha is nicknamed "Bunny Boo", just like her doll counterpart, and one pal was apparently named Jade.

      @@SophiaPhannnTo be fair he's from the 60s so most people didn't know him before this movie (although he did have a comeback in the 90s as Midge's husband) my doll was an og Allan (I spelled his name wrong in my comment 🤦‍♀️) I got him when I was about 6 at a yard sale. He was in a box full of other Barbies from the 60s and 70s. My mom was only gonna buy me one Barbie but when she asked the woman selling them how much it was they both looked over at me and as my mom puts it I was "literally vibrating with excitement over those Barbies" and the woman said she'd sell the whole box for $5 😂 best day ever

    I feel like people don't think about or recognize how sympathetic the Barbie movie is to Ken/men.
    His whole point is that having men being accessories and attachments for empowered women without any autonomy also doesn't fix gender issues but just leads to an inverse resentment, which would also lead to gender struggle/war when shown that they don't have to do it.

    Just to clarify, the Barbie movie is just as much about societal pressure of men as it is about women. It frustrates me when people watch this movie and say things like "why is Ken getting a musical number in a Barbie movie?". So many people watch this movie and interpret it as "women should have everything instead", rather than "both genders are in unfair positions". Where is the nuance in this conversation?

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  Місяць тому +11

      Tbh I was watching this more for a fun watch rather than an analysis, so it more so slipped my mind to look at both sides. If I had watched this more times prior, I probably would’ve picked it up and talked about it.

    • @Hesgot_apoint
      @Hesgot_apoint Місяць тому +3

      I agree. Though I personally don't think this movie does a good job highlighting any of that.
      Why did Ken not feel respected. I thought in cannon like "Barbie Dreamhouse" or whatever Barbie respected everyone, and her and Ken's relationship was strong.
      Why did the Barbies seemingly install a Matriarchy when it's been said before it would be no better than this.
      Why did the mom compare the Ken vs. Barbie to colonization spreading diseases.
      Why did the teen girl use patriarchal tactics to help the Barbies. Making Ken's questions their power over Barbies than their power over themselves.
      Seems like an almost play by play of how the working class is constantly pitted against each other, leaving no ability to focus on the people pitting them against each other.
      If every Barbie and Ken in this movie was white, it might as well have been a movie about white dictatorship from a "feminist" lense.
      Also this channel is a reaction channel not so much a movie analysis. This usually isn't the place to bring this up.
      Sophia was just having fun lol

    the only thing i dislike about this movie is the approach of her losing her hyperfemininity and taste of fashion to show her becoming "human" as if there's something not human in being feminine and fashionable. I hoped they did something similar to legally blonde because to ME that is being Barbie, focused on your goals and being confident in yourself, productive and being happy with your femininity. I loved the movie but in the final half it lost me, also i hated how everyone focused in Ken and it even had a performance in the Oscars like the whole purpose of the movie seemed lost.

    • @rachezzel
      @rachezzel Місяць тому +2

    • @onlinegirliee
      @onlinegirliee 16 днів тому +2

      @@rachezzel in my opinion that only makes it worse lmao, bc, it's like implying that being feminine, liking pink and girly things was something bad and "fake" when the message that Barbie always gave is to stay true to yourself and you can do anything. the "girlboss" "i don't need to wear pink to be powerfull" is old and very weird lol but yeah, i get the point they were trying to make, i just didn't like it bc it felt so forced.

    • @rachezzel
      @rachezzel 16 днів тому

      @@onlinegirliee i see what you mean, i feel like that colour was chosen because of the idea of pink being traditionally feminine and “pretty,”. saying she doesn’t have to be conventionally attractive or commercially viable to be a worthy person. i do see how that idea could be taken multiple ways though, and i would have preferred if she had kept some of her original style

    My parents wouldn't get me a Ken for some reason; it's not like the doll has anything a kid shouldn't see. So I cut a Barbie's hair really short and put on a loose shirt and pants and his name was Ben. One day my super conservative parents discovered Ben and bought a Ken they forced me to use. Now whenever they ask how they have a child who is pro-Trans and LGBT rights I ask them who made me recreate Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast without a Ken.

    A reaction from Sophia about the Barbie Live Action that’s released on my birthday?? Hell yeah! I love this movie so much, I went and watched it with my friends during the summer and we loved it. As a guy myself, I felt the empowering and beautiful message behind the movie. The monologue of the mom ranting about how being a woman is difficult struck way too close to home for me, despite not being a woman myself. I cried during that moment because I’m someone who has severe amounts of perfectionism, impostor syndrome, anxiety and self-loathing.
    I found myself wanting to please everyone and be strong and perfect as possible without showing so much a flaw or imperfection, and yes I still have some of that. But with age, I found that kind of mindset harmful to me in every sense possible. This movie saved me in ways I didn’t know was possible.

If you hold it to the impossibly high standard that it’s going to change the world and make everyone into feminists, yeah the movie will be disappointing because nothing can ever be that perfect. For me it was a fun movie with gorgeous set design and costume design so many cute callbacks to the original Barbie sets and an overall positive but realistic message

One of my favorite parts of the movie is when Margot goes FULL BARBIE, when she's feeling all defeated... And she just like flops onto the ground and starts rolling around all stiff and Barbie like... Grade A Barbie acting!! And don't get me started on Ken... I literally have an "I am Kenough" hoodie, exactly like the one Gosling wears after the "I'm just Ken" number. Like with the tie-die and EVERYTHING just EXACTLY like the one Ken has. Sasha and her friends are highly likely a Myscene doll reference as Mattel also owns them and they were made after Bratz came out to combat their popularity. They were older and more "edgy" then Barbies style. I loved watching their films as a kid even if I never owned the dolls. But the girls are a direct copy of the main girls in that Madison, Delancey, Chelsea, and Nolee

      Close. She's actually supposed to symbolize the Bratz. Her name is not only Sasha (one of the dolls) but her mom affectionately calls her "Bunny Boo" which was the dolls nickname. Though interestingly she should have been called Yasmin, as that's the Latina doll in the group. Sasha is the Black one. Then again, maybe that would have been too on the nose.

    This was a blast! And you're right, Jane Lynch would've been a perfect additon to the cast, omg! I loved this film. I wasn't sure what to expect when I first saw it, but it was fun. My sister and I actually owned 2 versions of the "Pregnant Midge" doll (mine was given as my birthday present by a classmate when I was 8. It's literally how my mom discovered I knew what a "pregnant" person was. I said "oh she's pregnant!" when I unwrapped her lollll). Her tummy was detachable & hollow; held to the doll's abdomen with magnets. There also was a lil newborn baby that literally fit into the belly. So you could role-play her being a new mom, as well as pregnant too. Kind of ironic in hindsight, considering the monologue that the film opens with, and the philosophy that that Barbie was founded on; luckily, a more nuanced take on feminism is what's examined in the film .
    Also, believe it or not, part of the controversy regarding pregnant Midge had to do with Alan. Barbie & Ken were historically marketed as fashionable older teenagers (like 17-19). It's only in recent years that Mattel has vaguely started leaning into Barbie & Ken being 20-somethings. But they were always polished, "mature"-looking teens. Midge, and then Alan, were introduced in the 1960's to add more 'youthful'-looking face sculpts and fashion aesthetic in the doll line, averaging a more 15-17-yr old look to them. (Barbie & Ken still embodied that done-up mini-adult 1950's demureness at the time). They were marketed as boyfriend & girlfriend, like Barbie & Ken.
    When pregnant Midge came out, decades done the line, the doll box made mention of Alan being the expectant father. And, besides the social taboo of treating pregnancy as a normal thing, around kids (gawd forbid!), there was an uproar about how Alan & Midge were still vaguely marketed as teens & also *gasp* unwed! But yeah, Alan is technically the baby daddy lol.

    When i was a kid i was in a disney store with my parents. They had a tour guide barbie from toy story 2. My mom was going to get it for me but my dad wouldn’t let her. I wasn’t even gonna play with it. I was going to put it with the rest of my toy story collection

    I watched some of the 2023 Oscars best pictures nominees with my mom, we had different favourites (hers were Holdovers and American Fiction, mine were Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives) but we both really enjoyed this one 🥰
    edit: and that scene where Barbie is looking at the park gets me too, but for me for whatever reason it's the slow pan up into the random ass tree. I'm a Denis Villeneuve fan what can I say I'm a sucker for a slow pan up into a random ass tree 😂

    My mum didn't really like this film because she thought it was too on the nose, but I think that was the whole point (?)
    Especially the feminist speech part. I guess we can't all appreciate the obvious approach hehe
    Btw I also tear up when Barbie talks to that old lady in the park (that whole scene, actually). It's beautifully done T.T
    Thank you for making a video on this, I really wanted to know your opinion because (surprise surprise) this movie is polarising
    Can't wait for the holiday season commentaries!

      Yeah I can see how some people wouldn’t like the meta-nature of it. But with a movie about Barbie and a lot of young kids watching, I don’t think subtlety would’ve been the better approach 😂

    I was admittedly super late to the party in getting around to this, watching it (and Oppenheimer too for that matter) roughly a month after it came out, but the experience of seeing it in the cinema was still truly delightful. Incredibly fun yet also very heartfelt, perhaps a little flawed in some areas, but undoubtedly a highly entertaining and compelling film, pretty much reaffirmed Greta Gerwig as a director whose work I'll be watching whenever a new one comes out (and to think that this is her weakest film, that's a sign of how good her films generally are). Everyone else seems to have jumped in to praise the performances, the music and the script, so I'm going to give a shout out to the production design, which was just fantastic. Between the brilliantly detailed sets, the gorgeous matte painted backgrounds and all the cleverly used props, this is pretty much a triumphant showcase of good practical effects, and proof that Gerwig could make an amazing old-school Hollywood musical if she wanted to.

    11:25 Which do we think it is? That she feels like she has to act this way for her friends or that her friends feel like they have to act that way for her? Or that they're both putting on an act of what they think they all want them to be?
    Either way I don't Sasha knows what a fascist really is, and I think that at least one of her friends still has all their barbie dolls under their bed and that every morning they dress them and every night brushes their hair and puts them to bed.

    I felt viciously attacked and called out when depression Barbie watched the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, everyone else I’ve ever known who was in my age group watched the film adaptation with Keira Knightly. I had only first watched it last year but had watched it at least a few times again before Barbie and have probably watched it another 10 times. 🤣

      It seems to be a shared experience for a lot of viewers, my sister felt specifically targeted by that moment, not helped by the friend she saw the film with, our mother and I all seeing that as a sequence that seemed to reflect her directly

  • @finland4ever55
    @finland4ever55 Місяць тому

    "Does she even know what that means?", probably not. But also I think that may or may not be a reference to the fact Barbie was modeled after a German doll so calling her a "fascist" feels more directed to Barbie than you may think.

    I got asked by more than one friend if I wanted to go see this movie in theaters when it first came out, and I regret not saying yes to one of them. I still had an amazing experience watching it for the first time at home and am maybe kinda glad that I didn't go see it in public because this movie did make me cry quite a few times 😅
    I feel like this is one of those movies that makes you emotional for a new reason every time you go back to watch it. It does a great job at tackling so many of the sad and crushing things all women have to deal with throughout different stages of their life while still keeping a tone of humor and hope, and is a huge part of why I love it so much 🩷

    Some people do think that the monologue is too “on the nose” & we already know all that. & that Sasha was too negative & cynical saying that “women hate women & men hate women, it’s the one thing we all agree on “
    And to them I say…
    Our next president of the USA come January 2025 is, again…..
    I think Barbie needs to be re-released in theaters, some people clearly didn’t pay attention or understand 😔
