    Hiiii everyone,
    I just wanted to say that I really enjoy having these deeper, meaningful discussions with y’all. I know that when I make videos on more serious movies, they get fewer views than my more “fun” videos. But I do this for the love of the game!!
    Maybe I’m just being sentimental because it’s the holiday season or because I’m almost to 100k subs. But I am truly grateful to have fostered a community where we all love movies and can have these types of discussions (as well as have fun) 🥹🫶🏼

    Fun fact: She IS one of the archetypes people use for Manic Pixie Dream Girl BUT she isn't one. She's super flawed, she doesn't *fix* Joel. She uses a quirky persona as a shield to distract herself from her own issues. She spends the majority of the movie arguing with and antagonizing Joel. MPDG was meant to show how male writers create these idealized, unrealistic girls but Clementine is shown as a full person - flaws and all.

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  5 днів тому +32

      I think it’s also interesting because we don’t even know if Joel’s memories of Clementine are even accurate to her real character because it’s all from his POV! We only really see her after Joel’s procedure, so his depiction of her in his mind being flawed also shows that she isn’t a MPDG

    Kate Winslet wore copious wigs in this film, and I never realised, since they all looked realistic. The colour correspond perfectly with Joel and Clementine's floundering relationship. It's green, the colour of growth and spring, when they first meet, and red during their summer of passion. It's orange when their relationship starts to "Fall" apart, and blue, invoking winter, after they've broken up.

    omg you’re so right about it being just joel’s version, i want the clem memory cut!! - but also, erasing those memories does change who you are! and that’s why ultimately they decide to do it all again I think, not because they believe beyond a shadow it will work this time where it failed before, but because most people ultimately would choose to make the same mistakes again if given the choice, even if they are painful, because our lives are molded and enriched by these experiences and the people we’ve known and loved. bc in that scenario if you lose the bad stuff, that means also losing the good stuff

    Obviously there’s a lot of takes on this movie, but one I don’t see often is that, they try again because they lead each other back to themselves, Joel makes sure to remember to go to Montauk, and Clementine makes sure to do the same. Now from there the interpretation can be that they love each other deeply and both quickly regretted their decision to forget the other because they subconsciously retained feelings and memories of each other. Like you said we could not see how she went through the procedure, but with the fact that we know she ended up in the exact same spot as him, we can infer that Clementine’s experience during the procedure would have been similar to Joel’s and decided like he did to not willingly give up her memories of him.

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  5 днів тому +13

      Oooh I didn’t even think about how Clementine’s experience during the procedure could mirror Joel’s. I do think that it’s romantic that they always come back together somehow (although the same can be said about toxic relationships 😅 but I digress). Their decision to try again and how their love for one another transcends their past are very beautiful

    Dr. Howard may have erased their memories of each other, but he couldn't erase the emotional journey they went on. Emotions aren't just stored in your memory, they're also stored physically in your body. And their relationships with everyone else around them would be irrevocably changed based on their influence on the other.
    So I believe these two crazy kids have a chance. It's a clean slate at a MUCH better starting position. And they know it ended bad, even if they don't remember the details. So they have a better chance at communicating how they feel going forward
    Or it ends, but maybe not so bad. Either way, I have faith in round #2

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  5 днів тому +7

      See even reading this comment, I get what you’re saying, but I still believe that they’re doomed HAHA. Because it’s hard enough for people to break out of cycles with their memories INTACT. I think that they’re bound to make the same mistakes and end up feeling bitter about each other towards the end again. But idk, I think I’m just more pessimistic 😅 it’s kind of like those books where you build your own journey. You’re at the same starting point every time, but each decision can lead to a different ending (or the same one). The beauty about this movie is that it’s ambiguous and you just never know! Just like real life

      @n.j.5044 5 днів тому +2

      @SophiaPhannn I made this comment before I saw Editing you say final thoughts. I think you may be right. But the hope for me is not whether or not they break up in the end and are mad about it. The hope, for me, is in that they have the choice this time, knowing it will probably go up in flames, yet they get the choice, and they say, "Fuck it, le'go"
      I've known people who were so afraid of things ending badly that they never did anything. Like, literally anything. Get a new job, try a new relationship. Hell, even leave the house. So I find it beautiful that they decide to try it anyway, and this time retain their memories of the trash fire relationship so they can try having love again later with someone else.
      Either way, love your videos, love your interpretation, love you 💕

    I think some people are missing the point in hoping that Joel and Clem make it work, or that the movie is trying to say they're destined to keep trying again because they're made for each other. The point is that some relationships are worth having and remembering, even if they end in disaster. It's a coping movie for bad breakups. (Spoilers for Arrival incoming) It's very similar to Arrival, in that way. Amy Adams chooses to have a child despite knowing that she'll die young, just like Joel and Clem decide to be together despite knowing they'll break up. (Spoilers over) The good outweighs the bad.

    It's interesting to see if you got any rewatchability out of it, as you were correctly interpreting all of the timelines and implications as they were revealed, not at the end of the movie like most (?) of us.
    Yeah, it's not crying sad, but melancholy sad. About how relationships die. About how even given a complete second chance, the odds are that they still might fail. And there's some hope there, but part of it is a commentary on how we still want to try despite it only being a slim hope.
    One thing to keep in mind is that some of their outside life experiences were erased (all of Joel's love of Huckleberry Hound singing "Oh My Darling, Clementine"), so they're slightly different people than the ones that tried in the past. Plus they've got inside info on how the other felt about them which will definitely impact their future choices and thoughts.

When I first heard of him, it was through reading a book called "Proust was a Neuroscientist" which was written by a neuroscientist lol. It was great, and after the Barbie joke, I went and read Proust, and he writes the way this movie is shot. It's amazing. You decoded this movie so fast and so amazingly. I must say, I'm impressed you caught onto the twist that the opening scene actually occurs chronologically at the end of the film; most people who react to this film don't pick up on it, and in general it seems to be the sort of thing that you only really notice on rewatch when looking for the clues, so it's really cool to see someone figure it out very early.
    Anyway, great reaction to an absolutely amazing film, genuinely one of the best films of the 2000s and arguably one of the best sci-fi films of all-time in my opinion. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet turning in career-best performances, the offbeat quirky yet melancholy direction, the insanely trippy visuals, the highly creative and intelligent script - it all works so well. Absolute masterpiece.

    The main thing of the movie is that if you no longer remember what brought you to the point of no return, to the point where you would willingly erase someone/something, you lose the ability to properly judge the effect that person or thing had on your life.
    As a concept, this could help someone with severe ptsd or other types of mental illnesses that are trauma related. But when it comes relationships, the idea is disastrous. Everything that first compels you to be attracted to someone, sometimes ends up being what repels you from them.
    Joel loved Clementine's sense of freedom and individuality. In the end, those were some of the things he most resented about her. It made him bitter and jealous. For Clementine, she hated his puppy dog face and called him pathetic. In the beginning, she was endeared to all of it. "Nice" became boring and overbearing.
    In the scene where he is talking about the last time they had sex, i find it interesting bc he really insults her on the tape, calling her unmotivated and saying it was "sad". When that memory is being erased he pleads to be able to keep it. If all the other memories went, they could. He just wanted that memory in particular.
    When we look back at things with the bitterness that comes from built up resentment, we can't accurately understand what made those things hurtful to lose. When we forget why things didn't work out, of course we can look at whatever it is with fresh faced optimism.
    "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind"
    When we forget the proven bad, all we can see is potential good.
    For the other ppl, like someone voluntarily forgetting their beloved pet, grief is crazy and they probs aren't understanding the second loss of forgetting their good times.
    The thing i believe ppl don't understand about this movie is that it isn't leaving it up to interpretation whether they will or won't end up happy. We already saw how it will end up. It is speaking to memory and how it makes a person who they are. Yes, the relationship ended, but they can then understand what they actually want in a relationship much better. The choice to dismiss the past is inevitable if you can't remember why you felt negatively about a person you are naturally drawn to.
    What we are supposed to hope for them, is that they end the cycle, to accept loss and all its silver linings. That they can grow as people.
    Of course, there is a slim chance it could work, but that would also require self reflection. Neither seem to be willing to do that at the end of the relationship the first time around. And how would it be possible without the knowledge of what occurred? Funnily enough what they might need to actually be together, is to remember why acted the way they did, and what they needed that the other person was not providing. Without that, it just repeats.
    This movie is so special to me. I watched it as a young teen and it made a huge impact on the way I view film. From the cast, the editing, the directing to the music. I didn't cry the first time. I always cry rewatching. Especially at the sequence before his memory is officially wiped

    I backed flipped upstairs to come watch this react. I remember when I first watched this movie, just randomly decided to do it cause it’s like always talked about amongst Jim Carey’s roles. I was also supposed to watch what’s the other one where he’s like a one man reality tv show character. But when I watched this movie I was like oh I get it. I get it. It made me sad and I was like would I choose to do that? No cause I’m not trying to accidentally end up back with any of my ex’s. But imagine this tech gets like abused because what if only one person wipes their mind and the other just keeps putting their self with the amnesiac.

      I can understand the PAAAIIINNN of a heartbreak that makes you wanna take the easy way out to forget everything, but at the same time, I would NOT go through with it. Too many things can go wrong and yeah-I definitely would not wanna go back to an ex LOL

      @ Exactly I already naturally have a terrible memory. I’m keeping what I got to learn my lesson and move on.

    Ha I’m laughing at your constant shock of actors popping up. Like that’s real watching older movies it honestly feels like you don’t know who worked together at some points in their career. Like so you know each other and haven’t worked together again? Put your money together and make that movie
