those were real moths that flew out of billy’s mouth, and they had to do the take a couple times. bless doug jones for committing so hard to his creature roles
Oh my god 🤢 I could never
@@SophiaPhannn Doug Jones had a small plastic peice in the back of his mouth to keep the dust and moths from going into his throat but his saliva was an issue which is why it took multiple takes 😂😂 he's a champ
Ewwww! He's brave!
“Thackery Binx” is one of the greatest fiction names of all time. Also, these three actresses are having the times of their lives playing these roles and I really think that’s why this movie is still a lot of fun.
We named one of our feral cats Binx and the other Salem :)
Bette midler says Winifred is her fave role!
The reason for Emily not struggling to get away from them is because Sarah's song put her into a hypnosis-like trance.
I always theorized that the reason why Thackeray was able to talk after the witches were back was because his speech was linked to their magic and because they were brought back he could talk
Oooooh that's a good theory!
I had assumed people had tried to capture and kill the "possessed demon cat" enough times that he just stopped trying.
My guess was...it's been 300 years. Not _impossible_ for him to have figured something out in all that time, even with feline features.
Yeah I always took it as that or he can only speak on Halloween
@@christopherb501 yeah he probably could learn some words in that time
"Oh look, another glorious morning... it makes me sick!" That is ultimately my favorite line of the entire movie!!!!
Fun fact: When a spell mentions something to do with a virgin, they're actually referring to someone who's blood hasn't been tainted by another supernatural ritual.
Literally ANYONE could've lit that candle.
The real moral of the story is: don't go messing with stuff you know nothing about.
That makes so much more sense tbh. Why would magic care about anyone's s*x life.
actually no... alot of it actually means virgin
@@craigime like the olive oil?
@@miketrujillo3677 is the olive oil a spell?
Virgin has many diferent meanings in the dictionary. It can also mean someone who is innocent, naive and inexperienced.
Fun fact: The kid who plays the human version of Thackery Binx now plays Mcgee on NCIS
that show's still on the air?
@@craigime yeah but I feel like they won't have many more seasons since they got rid of Gibbs last season or so (the team leader)
@@brain_dead6877 they got rid of literally everyone. The show fucking sucks now because all of the cast has been replaced by no-names. The only ones left are McGee, ducky, and ducky's assistant.
Emily isn't chill-She's hypnotized!
man, Max always looked so grown up when I was a kid and I was Dani's age. Watching it now he's so obviously a kid which makes this whole thing even scarier because they really are just teenagers and a little girl up against evil witches. I love this movie so much, it was a staple every year for me as a kid and I can't wait to watch it with my boyfriend this year because he's never seen it and I really want to see the new one with him too... Even though I'm absolutely expecting it to be awful. But who cares!
I was born in Salem, and the place that was used for the hangings in the Salem Witch Trials has been lost to history. Some people speculate that its where the Salem hospital now stands which i really hope isn’t the case because then I and countless other babies were born on the grounds of a place that used to be used for murder
I think that rationalizing it that way is a mistake. Many animals die on predation now and in the past and it's very likely that where we live or stand is a place in which there was a kill. There is no reason to focus on that.
I saw that Salem High school also has the best mascot and color scheme ever lol
It’s at Proctor’s Ledge, which is down the street from Salem Hospital. It’s very close to it, but at least it’s not right on top of the site
@@nbunnysnowboard yeah I literally learned that yesterday lol. Thanks though 😊
I mean, that would be extremely poetic though. Bringing life where once was dead? Sounds pretty good.
"i had to wait 300 years for a VIRGIN to light a candle" lmfaooooo, i loved your reaction!
He had to emphasize the "VIRGIN" in that line to really drive it home 😭😂
Watching this now i'm like "why does Dani even know what a virgin is?"
Binx probably didn’t know people could understand him at first, and then he probably thought if he started talking that he’d get hunted, and that skeleton singer’s costume is so cool. I always thought that Max being a virgin was no big deal - he’s 16!!
Great vid as always!
What a classic, love this movie. It is kind of crazy how much of an emphasis they put on the fact that it’s a VIRGIN who lights the candles 😂 like let my guy live. I really hope the second one doesn’t suck 😅
Yeah they kept mentioning it 😂 like damn I GET IT LOL
It sucked... respectfully :(
@Sophia Phan that was basically the running joke!
I almost thought I imagined that "bitch" you put in when Max's parents dismissed him not having shoes. It drives me crazy that movies and sitcoms tend to have useless adults and evil snobby kids.
Yeah sometimes I attribute it to just lazy writing because they're not meant to be characters that the audience are supposed to focus on anyways 🤷🏻♀️
well many times people dont notice things or are useless lol and there ARE jerky kids who enjoy picking on people and teachers dont do anything
Hocus Pocus was supposed to be a Disney channel original movie but it was then changed to get a big screen release instead
It totally has the DCOM feel, but I think it definitely benefited from a theatrical release!
@Sophia Phan I agree!
"Disney shows a dead cat in their movie."
Just out curiosity, without giving too much away, have you seen Frankenweenie '12?
Also, the guy who played the zombie is Doug Jones who you've seen playing both the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth. The guy is a legend.
Just a quick fun fact: there weren’t any area codes until I think the very early 2000s for phone numbers. I remember when my families house phone made the switch to add an area code and my parents messed up our phone number constantly for a good few weeks after the switch lol
Omg WHAT I never knew that was a newer thing 😱
@@SophiaPhannn Those are good news, It means you are not that old 😂
I remember learning our number for the first time without the area code and being helped to remember it afterwards with the area code and that would've been roughly 1990
Area codes have been around since the 1940's. Though I remember in the 70s dialing only the last 5 numbers for local calls. Mid-80s last 7 digits. Mid-2000s full 10 digits
You just made me feel so old
Being a teenage boy in the 80's and early 90's, hormones out of control, moving to new cities. Yes you can fall for the 1st girl that says acknowledges you're existence. I had a few girlfriends when I was a teen, they just didn't know it. :)
Hahaha that's true. Sometimes I forget about teen hormones 😂 but I was very much romance-averse in high school, so I could not relate
@@SophiaPhannn so was it because you where disgusted by the thought or afraid?
Fun Fact: Emily’s actress has her own UA-cam channel! She used to make parody music videos, like singing E.T. but the lyrics are replaced with Charlie Sheen quotes. I remember watching them many years ago.
EDIT: My apologies, I got the actress wrong. Amanda Shepherd was the actress for Emily, not VenetianPrincess. VP played one of the children hypnotized by Sarah. My bad, I heard she was Emily’s actress many years ago and I never bothered to look it up.
Oh, what's the channel's name?
@@allie1256 VenetianPrincess
@@allie1256 I’m sorry, I got the actress wrong. I heard that VenetianPrincess was Emily many years ago and I didn’t look it up to confirm that until now. Amanda Shepherd is the original actress and as far as I know she doesn’t have a UA-cam channel.
You did well with the planning for this video. Hocus Pocus 2 is tomorrow on Disney + with the written sequel already in stores since 2018.
We don't speak of that book.
@@ZukoHalliwell why? I thought it was a good book?
@@alexis.hartman04 Well, nobody else did. I never read it, but I've heard it was terrible.
@@ZukoHalliwell I think it was much more connected to the original than the sequel was. Plus is actually has Max, Dani, Allison, Binx, and Emily.
Fun Fact: the devil and his wife are played by Garry Marshall, the director of the Princess Diaries 1 & 2 and Pretty Woman, and his sister Penny Marshall who directed BIG!
also this movie stars my favorite sfx actor Doug Jones (Billy)!
I actually rewatched this movie in the middle of august and for a moment I questioned of it's kinda weird to watch spooky movies in summer, but I don't regret anything! Great review and great hair!
This movie was released on July 16, 1993
The exact day I was born!
No wonder I love it so much!
14:44 That is Garry Marshall in the devil costume. Garry was a bigtime director/producer that sometimes acts in movies. His sister Penny played his wife in the movie. She had a drug problem that made her drop off the A list as an actor. Hocus Pocus helped rehab her career and she won acclaim as director of A League of Their Own, Big and Jumpin Jack Flash.
"If you have death's breath on your neck, wouldn't that be kind of attractive?"
Thanos has entered the chat.
I wonder if in the second movie they are gonna make that amount of “you’re a virgin” jokes with that girl, it’s a bit unfortunately how it’s so easy to make fun of a guy for being a virgin (as apparently not getting laid makes you a loser), but when it’s about girls it’s more of a grey area.
I doubt they're gonna have that schtick still. Disney (and other family friendly networks) has sanitized their content a lot in the past few years
Prior to this, Kenny Ortega also directed Disney’s Newsies, the first feature film he directed.
😎
You should watch that movie too! It’s hugely underrated! It’s a musical starring a very young Christian Bale!
Now that I think about it, a) the trance thing and b) she feels she will be saved by her brother.
Than the potion paralyzed her in current form.
I don’t know. Not going to overthink it.
“Bette Midler has blessed my ears” 😂 Literally me everyday, girl!! Happy HalloBeans! 🧡💚💜🎃👻
I'm so glad you did this movie! Been hoping you would! LOVE Hocus Pocus! I'm iffy about the sequel but excited to see the Sanderson sisters back.
Also the reason why Emily is so calm is cause I believe she's still under Sarah's spell so that's why she's so calm and happy.
Salem on Halloween is the purest form of Chaos, both good and bad. It’s really fun, but there is 0 parking
Omg I can imagine Salem gets PACKED
Being turned into an immortal cat doesn't seem like much of a punishment.
The little actor who played Dani is Thora Birch, who grew up to be Thora Birch the actor - 100% recommend Ghost World (2001) with her, one of my favourite movies.
i visited Salem last summer and got to see a lot of the places from this movie! the town hall, Allison’s house, and the school are right near each other (even though i don’t think the school is a school anymore). it’s one of those little towns where you can just walk almost everywhere. i saw Max & Dani’s house and the graveyard he rode through at the beginning too, but they’re a little bit away from everything else
If I had two nickels for every time Disney showed a dead cat on screen, I'd have two nickels... which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Thackery Binx is also MacGee from NCIS
Just FYI!
Okay, making a separate comment because someone posted misinformation in another comment: before the 00's you didn't need an area code when calling someone in your town. You only needed an area code when calling another town or state.
Area codes have been around for a very long time. At least since the 20's, possibly earlier. They just weren't necessary until cell phones, and the ability to call anyone anywhere became a thing.
Man i had the biggest crush on the actor that played Zachary
*Thackary*
My only guess for why Binx didn’t talk to his family was he had to relearn how to speak. Being a cat and all. But that’s just a guess.
I thought about that too, but you can't just transform the vocal cords of a cat's to a human's 😂 but it's all magic so anything is possible hahaha
@@SophiaPhannn also true hahah
I believe the black flame candle allowed him to talk
This movie is the legit reason why I love Bette Midler so much.
The human actor for Binx is none other than NCISs Timothy McGee.
I know. When I saw him on NCIS, I was like oh wow that's (human) Binx.
@@theatergeek82 He was one of my crushes when I was younger him and human Casper. lol
@@XenaWarrior24 He became my celeb crush once I started watching NCIS.
This video put me in the perfect mood for the sequel tonight 😍💖
Yay!! I'm getting excited for the sequel too 🤩
#SophiaPhan, you are so sweet. Thank you so much for uploading this awesome movie reaction. Your content is absolutely amazing, and I love watching you react to different movies.
Omg aww thank you! 💙💙
While most of the movie was filmed in Salem, but a few scenes were filmed across the harbor in a small town called Marblehead where i used to live
Omg! i love the way she did her hair she look so cute 💜
Thank you!! 💙💙
@@SophiaPhannn oh! im sorry is it Blue not Purple?
It's blue haha but it's like an indigo kind of shade, so it does have some purple hues!
You had me very confused.
At first you were hating on Emily and I thought it was because you didn’t realize that she was under Sarah’s spell.
But then you said “oh, maybe she’s under a spell because of the song.” So I figured you got it.
But then you continued to hate on Emily for the rest of the movie for not having any emotion or reaction.
So to be clear, YES, Emily was sitting in the chair emotionless because she was under Sarah’s spell song. Danny wasn’t under a spell which is why she was arguing with them.
Love your videos. 🥰 Keep them coming.
10:48 yeah this movie is from 1993, I’m honestly as surprised as you are i didn’t know it was that old.
i never noticed until later viewings of this movie that Max definitely has a pot leaf drawn on his paper in class lmao.
I'd say the lesson is never make a deal with the devil. You're only gonna get burned in the end.
Your hair looks really pretty.
And I’m not just sayin this because blue is my favourite colour💙
Thank you!! 💙💙
the universal experience is watching hocus pocus at 7 and asking ur parents what a v!rgin is
One of my favourite scenes in this movie is when the little girl dressed up as an angel says “Bless you” to the witches.
there are two kinds of people those who love this perfect movie and those who are wrong and probaly support every bad thing, and the witches give the best performances every scene with them is perfect.
YES!!!
LOVE THIS MOVIE!!
HOCUS POCUS 2, Tomorrow, on Disney plus!
😍 I can't hocus FOCUS, Sophia you look so beautiful. Ok ok but really this is my favorite yearly re-watch. Love Bette Midler!

Life lessons from Sophia Phan's movie commentary titles.
12:04 Explains the exact reason why Sarah Jessica Parker was my main favorite thing about this movie. I've always loved how she acts like such a child in it. 😂😂😂
Omg, their necks said left, right, left, right and then left at 4:07 😭
It came out today!! 💞 OMG 🤣 Thanks for this video, I really love your movie commentaries
Thank you 🥺💙
2:39 I had wondered about that for awhile, but I think part of Sarah's spell just makes kids completely chill.
I just learned that Thackery Binx is McGee from NCIS! I'm honestly shocked.
This has kick started my yearly start to watching horror movies and such for Halloween. My country doesnt really celebrate it but its slowly becoming a thing i think . I want to experience one halloween in autumn not spring like it is here in october
My home country's really getting into halloween
At least for the last three years
My mother country's known for "obeah" and "duppies"
And now, almost everyone over there celebrates Halloween
I've lived in the USA for a while
And am now an American citizen
I've always been into Halloween and Christmas!
Hocus pocus is a great film!
Edit: it was actually relased on the day i was born, which was
Friday, july, 16, 1993!
I'm with you! I'm not particularly superstitious but I am diffidently not going to invite anything because you can never truly know!
Your hair is so CUTEEE 💙💙💙 keep up the awesome reactions!! 💕
Thank you!! 😚💙
Fun Fact: The human Thackery Binx is actually dubbed. He is played as a human by Sean Murray and dubbed by Jason Marsden who also play Max Goof from A Goofy Movie and Haku in Spirited Away.
I'm so excited for the new one!! Plus from the trailer it looks like it includes some elements of actual witchcraft 😁
“Kenny Ortega has some hits under his name!”
Me who sees Doug Jones name pop up.👁👄👁
Cute outfit and fun reaction Sophia! I'll be here for the sequel too.
I just learned that the kid that got cursed into a cat was dubbed over by Max Goof's va 💀💀
Was there a reason why the actor was dubbed voiced over?
@@COSun25 apparently he couldn't do a 1600s voice, so they brought in Jason Marsden
SQUEEE! I DID IT AGAIN! BWAHAHAHAHA! Omg I love Hocus Pocus. Have done ever since it came out in 93. (Kathy Najimi. Oh you just said it ok lol). I can't wait for you to sing the song. I do whenever I'm somewhere with good reverb hehe 💜 Happy Spooky Season, girlfriend! ☠🎃👻🕷🥀🕸🦇
Love the blue hair 😊
they released a sequel BOOK a couple years ago; i don't think it's the same story as the actual movie sequel they made though...
1993 me WOULD NOT STOP asking what a virgin was, drove my parents buts. Eventually mom just said "it's a kind of Olive oil" and left it at that. 🙄
This is the quintessential 90's Halloween family movie, IMO. Not so hardcore as to make your parents punish you for watching it (your Nightmare on Elm Streets, Friday the 13th's or, yes, Halloween films) but just close enough to the 80s that they managed to sneak in some language, body horror and spooky imagery. The head-getting-kicked-off-Billy's-Shoulders scared the hell out of my sister. The film is drenched in nostalgic Halloween imagery and sense-memories. I grew up in the Midwest, so my Halloween memories are slightly different, but some of the stuff in this film translates to a suburban Halloween you'd find outside Chicago. The hay-bales covered in pumpkins, the green witch painted jack-o-lanterns with the exposed bottom tooth, the elaborate skeleton animatronic scaring kids as they approach their houses, never-mind the colors of the trees, the way the town looks, the overall atmosphere...they did Halloween proud, even if it was on a soundstage in Burbank. Never had any huge Halloween themed dances, but oh yes, at least 1 house in 10 had an elaborate party, the best excuse ever to drink while dressed as a slutty (insert popular thing here). Even the bullies-turned-vandals is accurate, I knew at least 5 of these lunkheads who would fill up on candy and then TP/Egg/graffiti/ding-dong-ditch throughout the night on Halloween. The best memory I have is of one trying to steal candy from my neighbors and taking so long that they cops managed to sneak up on them. Very satisfying, I hope he's stamping license plates in prison somewhere right now.
I love films that soak themselves in the theme of whatever it is they are trying to immerse the audience in. Polar Express nails the "apprehensive kid in the early 50s have a Christmas crisis of faith" feeling. Homeward Bound has always felt like a Thanksgiving film, so has Charlie Brown and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. But the Halloween film that seems to reign supreme as the most densely-packed with holiday themes/images/settings/framework HAS to be Trick 'r Treat. I hope you get a chance to review that one...the over-the-top set designs, decorations, costuming, setting and direction make it almost Halloween p*rn. Check it out if you haven't, it sets the tone for the season, at least for me.
Thora Birch was 11 when they made this and she is now FORTY. And she has Ghost World and American beauty under her belt. Where did the last 29 years go??? Good review. 😮💨😁
"Olive oil. Virgin olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil. Extra extra virgin olive oil. Olive oil with a questionable past..."

Abstinence advocates would combust watching 30 seconds of Sarah doing anything.
The way this movie harps on virginity, but HSM2 is all 'Sharpay wants to SING with you,Troy' : ' )
HAHAHA HSM2 could've been so chaste if it weren't Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron being ALL over each other 😂🤭
@@SophiaPhannn I love that movie!
The scene with the sisters getting inside an oven? Wtf? I HAVE NEVER SEEN THAT BEFORE!
My family and I are watching this movie tomorrow together and the new movie😭😭❤️

No the lesson is don’t assume the witches are dead and open their beacon.
I think because the sisters didn't get any energy, they exploded into dust--so they SHOULD be dead for good. But because Winnifred got a tiny bit from Max, she turned into stone..? Which I could technically see bringing her back to life in some way, if this sequel movie is a legit sequel and not just a remake or a prequel film. Still... I'm also not feeling optimistic about Hocus Pocus 2. I *hope* it's good, but after Pinocchio... Yikes. XD
This movie is why I know what a virgin is 😂 I had to ask my mom like 10 times before I remembered lmao
Que peliculon Dios.Amo está película,me encanta y hasta me se el guión de memoria jaja

Hocus Pocus is my SHIT, man. Dumb as it is today, it's been a Halloween tradition of mine to watch this movie every year. Actually had a black cat named Binx who was born the same year the movie came out (1993) and as a result I still ugly sob every time Binx (in the movie) dies.
Also, Sarah Jessica Parker 😏
Also also may or may not have had a crush on Vinessa Shaw back in the day.
