The UK should be so ashamed of themselves the way they have treated this amazing man and singer.....Still listening to him 60 years after first hearing him on my older uncles record player....
The heck did the UK do? We didn't treat him badly. We supported his music and him and still do. One guy tried to take advantage of him and played all the media, and you blame the whole UK for it? Literally don't want to go to where you live. If it's the US... you literally gave up the right to type a long time ago.

I just stumbled across it because I'm composing a playlist of songs that were in the hitlist on the exact date of my sister's birth, 40 years ago. Can't believe I never heard this song before!
Born in '75 and was brought up listening to this man's voice over the radio. I love him and his music. Will never be able to find a musician as talented as the ones I grew up listening to... "the young wear their freedom like cheap perfume" so apt for today. Strength to you, dear Sir Cliff Richard. Lots of love from warm South Africa!
Me too, born in '75 and from South Africa. Although he is one of my mom's favourite from her era 50's-60's, it is so amazing that he re-invented himself and became an even bigger star in the 80's when we as kids loved his songs too...my favourites are Carrie, Wired for Sound, Suddenly and many more. We were dancing to Michael Jackson but loved Sir Cliff's songs too
The saddest part is good music and singers are so criminally under rated. THINK OF CLIFF! I have his albums which others may look down at but I DON'T CARE! I'll collect albums I enjoy, not what YOU enjoy, cool people! And Cliff WAS the best of that time. What a voice! Amazing craftmanship!
Juliet you're spot on with your comment. I'm not a cliff fan either but a good song is a good song and this is absolutely superb. For me his golden period was very late 70s/early 80s when this song, Wired for Sound, and Dreaming (my fave) were prevalent. X
love this song and performer! Did some great stuff around the turn of the 80s. Noticed also whether singing or miming this guy never put a foot wrong...
I remember driving home & hearing Carrie on a local AM radio station. For weeks I listened to that same radio station hoping it would be played again. It seemed to disappear, no replays. Awesome song haunting emotional melody, cool groove & "Steely Dan" style chord changes on the chorus & great sax solo. I was really wanting to learn the song & add it to our bands set list. It was back in the day way before you could just pull it up online. 35 years later I found the mystery song on UA-cam. Thanks Cliff, It truly is one of my "desert island songs" !
Perfect pop song. Production and playing is top notch. Some of the harmonisation reminds of Steely Dan's jazzy sophistication, whilst retaining a bit of rock edge. Written by Terry Britten and BA Robertson. Terry played guitar in Cliff's band through the 70's, co-wrote Devil Woman, and went on to more success with Tina Turner, co-writing and producing What's Love Got to Do With It amongst others. A real perfectionist in the studio, and with a superb pop singing voice of his own, too.
I've only heard this song , perhaps, five times including now. First heard it on Casey Kasem's top 40 radio show in winter 1980 and immediately thought of Sissy Spacek. Eerie, unsettling lyrics-----whatever happened to the young lady Mr. Richard is singing about ?? The melody is melancholy and foreboding, as well.
The spookiness made me think of the Stephen King story too...same sense of creeping dread. What happened to the Carrie in the song seems to be summed up in the backing vocals near the end of the song..."Carrie doesn't live...doesn't live...doesn't live...anymore"...
Top of the Pops on BBC Four brought me here. So pleasantly amazed at this. Brilliant lyrics that tell a story with a haunting melody to go with it. Almost up to 1 million hits as well!!.
What a great song. Does anyone else miss the bad ass saxophone lead breaks that were so prevalent in the 80’s? Horns accompaniment were just magic. Now we have autotuned shit and digital “likenesses”. So sad.
Remember hearing this one on my old AM radio when I was 14 years old in late 79 early 1980! Now 58! Great memories & going on my classic tunes playlist for camp on my iPod!🙂🙂🔊🔊🎵🎵🎧🎧
Amazing song! Starting with "The Young Ones" and "On the beach", through your 80s creations ("Stronger" etc), I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED AND I DO LOVE YOUR MUSIC! Have a good weekend, Sir!
This was Cliff's best period I think as well. Superb songs. Love saxophone solo in this. Has that real late 70's early 80's rings sound to it. A brilliant song.
Absolutely there’s a Steely Dan influence - the chords in the chorus are 100% a particular type of voicing that the Dan were very fond of and are all over their albums.
Oh what a masterpiece from Cliff even when I listen to this song now it elicits such a response of euphoria and excitement that I don't get tired of listening to it and that applies to other songs by Cliff. Marvelous music.
Cliffs best period in my opinion. Carrie, Devil Woman, Wired for Sound, We don’t talk anymore 👍
Totally agree with the songs youve listed
Check out Throw Down A Line (credited as Cliff & Hank) from 1969. That one is superb and different to the other stuff he was doing around that period.
Yes ...sublime
Down to Bruce Welch producing and hiring top songwriters.

Completely agree. I’m a massive fan of him but this and all around this era are his best. 1974-1987, the ultimate era
Well said. 💖

@@GardeningForProfit it's cos he is a genuinely nice guy and the press can't find anything bad cos there's nothing TO find

This whole album is melancholic and tunely unforgettable.
I haven't heard this song before today, but "The young wear their freedom / like cheap perfume" is going to haunt me for a long time. _Great_ song.
This song always made me feel sad, like it was a guy looking for his girlfriend, and she ghosted him and moved without telling him where she went.

Played this to death back in the day. One of cliffs absolute best. I get goosebumps listening to the Hammond organ on the outro, haunting and moody
Playing this to death even now 🎉
Moody blues
Trashed my single of this song, by playing it too much.
Carrie is the ultimate song that engraved Cliff Richard into the rock and roll of fame
Absolute brilliant.
This was a big hit in late 1979.
I love that sax in the moddle of the song.
This my friends, is a timeless masterpiece. You wont find many better these days.
Absolutely.

This song was great in the 80’s and it’s still great today.
Not really, it's 1979. It's close to 1980.
From the Golden Age of pop music!

The right sentiment, universal appeal, this song should be played more often on 80's retro, smooth jazz, 'the vault'-like format stations.
Brilliant cliff . Why is he so underrated. Pure class .
A song the staff at 10 Downing Street will soon be singing.

I believe that this is an amazingly creative well crafted song. Terribly overlooked by the "cool" people who have overlooked many others...
All time classic.....love it
The cool about this song is how urban and jazzy on the style of Steely Dan it is . Pure New York City nights on early 80’s . Love it!
