Lyrics:
Windin' your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well another crazy day, you'll drink the night away
And forget about everything
This city desert makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people but it's got no soul
And it's taking you so long to find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything
You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're tryin', you're tryin' now
Another year and then you'll be happy
Just one more year and then you'll be happy
But you're cryin', you're cryin' now
Way down the street there's a light in his place
He opens the door he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen and you talk about anything
He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he'll settle down, in some quiet little town
And forget about everything
[Chorus]
But you know he'll always keep movin'
You know he's never gonna stop movin'
'Cause he's rollin', he's the rollin' stone
And when you wake up, it's a new mornin'
The sun is shinin', it's a new mornin'
You're goin', you're goin' home

My dear Grandpa is going for his cancer operation in the new year. He loves this song. I'm trying to sing for him instead of cry. I love you Grandpa. You are my hero.
I hope everything goes well.

Best of luck with everything - take care.
Baker Street isn’t just a song anymore….it’s a full fledged masterpiece.
Baker Street just hits hard. That sax just emphasizes the lyrics. You get two of them and the guitar solo hits....which it just fucking is awesome....then more sax.
It's a state of mind 🤟
I totally agree😁😁
ALWAYS was a Masterpiece! 🍀
A feeling that everyone enjoys.
When this song came out in 1978 that saxophone just blew my mind. One of the most iconic intros to any song and still get the adrenaline flowing 45 years later.
Absolutey
hell yeah i was alive in 78 great times
I loved doin this tune
Looking back on 1978, I wonder how I ever survived that year.
❤
No one ever talks about the guitar riff only the Sax but it is outstanding as well.
one of the best guitar solos I think ever. Nice execution, phrasing, space, etc. A solo doesn't have to be a million notes to be great
Everything about this song I love.
I agree, a wonderful guitar solo. Pretty much perfect.
@@1earthangel2023 yes it's a 20th century classic.
It's a good one, for sure.
One of the most iconic songs of the seventies! ❤️

There are some songs that take you back in an instant, to a time that seems so distant, yet so clear and near. They leave you with a lump in your throat at years gone by, memories engraved in your head, and in your heart. So many memories. This song is one of them ❤️😢
Miss those days
That's so true
hello GOODBYE TO 6 YEARS ON YA BYE BRAINWASHER

Couldn’t agree more.
My drum teacher told me back in 1972 that the sign of a truly great song is, While its playing you can close your eyes and see the song as a movie in your head.My strongest "movies"are Baker street,Rush 2112 whole album,Led Zep No Quarter and Black Sabbath Hand of Doom.
This song makes me feel like I’m in another dimension
Even as a teenager in the 70’s I knew and felt this was a classic tune. It’s hauntingly beautiful and serene.
I felt the same way about robbie Miles "Children" as a young person in the 1990's.
For the same reasons you specified.
Some things will never leave us.
It shouldn't be as it's a song about how terrible life working in the city is, lol.
One of my favourite songs in the late 70'S in my late teens love the big finish with saxophone and guitar this will never leave my brain!!
I agree 💯. I miss being a teen in the 70s. This song takes me back to great memories!
Dito.
I've just bought a saxophone, Purely to learn this ,😭😭😭😭 wish me luck
I wish your parents and neighbors luck too ^^
the sax is still cool, Good Luck
Any progress?
go for it bro
Brilliant good luck
Summer of '78; 16 years old and mesmerized by Rafferty's silky voice and that SAX...
It just doesn't get any better, and think about the fact that Gerry grew up in Scotland. Somehow, he tapped into the American vibe of what was going on at that time and adapted it and created magic out of it all.
Rafferty absolutely nailed it.
Icon of 70s music writ large.
And no, PLEASE do not post idiotic geriatric missives about how "that was real music, no this or that, blah blah." That's idiotic and irrelevant.
There is plenty of good music out there now, but the point is that this was the 70s, and Raffrerty helped define the era.
I was there.
Same age, still mesmerized, great song :)

So sorry for your loss!

My friend, I lost my Dad in 2018, he was my best friend. This song has always made me think of him, my Dad was a true rolling stone. It’s hard for me to listen to sometimes, but I visit it every so often.
One of the greatest British pop records in history. The sax playing is the greatest of any pop record in history, and that's what makes it so special.
I agree, it is one of the greatest pop records. But I know the sax solo by Rafael Ravenscroft is iconic, but the song itself is simply beautiful. And how often, if ever, do you hear ANYTHING as great as this these days!
@@Harmonical1The saxophone solo was written by Gerry Rafferty
Yeah, I don't agree. The saxophone lines are NOT a solo, it's a melody line repeated throughout the song, and Ravenscroft never told the truth about it.
The demo exists where Gerry Rafferty plays the melody line (not a solo, it's a riff, or motif) on guitar. It's Gerry's melody, not Ravenscroft's, and it's a great song, saxophone or not!
Everyone goes on, and on about the sax playing, and it's good but not outstanding and he didn't come up with it off the cuff, it wasn't improvised. He even lied about not getting paid for it, but if he was in the musicians union, that's what they are there for, to make sure you DO get paid!!! A load of bullshit!!
Why does nobody ever talk about the brilliant guitar work on it? Hugh Burns plays one of the best solos probably EVER on a song that was that big of a hit, and gets NO credit!!!! 🤔😬
@@2112GTR It's just one of those things where it gets overshadowed unintentionally. I mean, I would disagree that the guitar solo, although great in its own right, would be considered one of the best in song-history. In my opinion, it would have to go through the rounds with a few timeless pieces before it then contends against many of Dire Straits songs - riffs, licks, solos, the lot. But I say that as someone who considers Dire Straits both underrated and overshadowed, while they being my all-time favourite artist. There is a subjectivity to it.
@@leonmcnair4615 dire straights? huh?
That sax solo never gets to old
One of the most underrated songs of all time. A true classic. Never gets old for me. I have so many more cliches to describe this song, but I think you get the drift.
Good on you Mr Roller!
Rusty copacabana by Barry Manilow won that year. I stand by my comment.
Me funaron
The laid back lyrics, the words, sax solo, bass, rhythm, such a loss of a man and his music, it will live on forever... how did he do it..... I doubt if many musicians songwriters will achieve anything like this
I’m sorry to tell you that but this song is a classic with a phenomenal succes
45 years later and this might still be my favorite song of all time. Both the saxophone and the electric guitar work give me major chills and goosebumps.
Probably you already know Money by Pink Floyd

Can you imagine being part of the recording session that produced this masterpiece?
When you team up with Alan Parsons you can't go wrong.
This song was recorded at Chipping Norton Studios, Oxford. As were many other great songs of the 70’s to early 90’s. Unfortunately now it’s a Dental surgery . Sign of the times!
I can imagine it now. I’m the saxophone player, blowing pure gold dust out of my lungs.✨✨✨
It's such a iconic piece of music
Oh, just to be a mouse in the corner!
Yesterday I visited London and caught the tube from Baker St. As I descended the escalator I was hummimg the tune silently inside my mind and a man behind me started whistling the sax part. Really good whistling too.
Thank you mr whistler...you made my day. I'd just been for a hospital appointment and your spontaneity was so cool and made me smile. Keep whistling and spreading those happy Baker St vibes.
Discovered today Gerry was Scottish, lived and died in Scotland, and yet this is one of the most American sounding songs I think I've ever heard!

His immense talent and his songs are still as popular today as they were then. In an interview with Mark Knoefler, he said they would go to the pub often after the pub closed Gerry aways kept drinking when he went home or somewhere else. He knew then that Gerry was slowly sinking into addiction. His father also died an alcoholic, so it seems to have been a genetic trait. This song and right down the line are classics.
This song resonates with me. I come to it every now and then and when I hear the lyric, "another year and you will be happy" I feel like he's speaking to me and I become optimistic that I'll be happy in a year but I never do
Now I'm a drummer who has been playing for 58 years. I worked at Chess Records in Chicago and seen/experienced some wild sh*t my time there. In the end, it's all good! Some of the remarks I've read here astound me. I don't think some of your musical experiences at the most have to deal with the volumn knob on your stereo. Gerry Rafferty for those of you not knowing how talented the man was. He played guitar AND piano. He wrote the songs, sang them and directed/produced each song. Not an easy feat. Give the man the accolades he deserves, don't tear him down. Please. Bless you brother.
Well said...thank you. Gerry Rafferty was so very talented, but he never toured. I read once it was due to fear of traveling and severe stage fright. Baker Street was so deep in meaning, and in my humble opinion was his best.
I understand you. What is all this.
Ok
Thank you for that,,❤all great musicians work so hard and deserve much respect, ❤ I raised my boys to work and play music, 2 are guitarist and one a drummer!,one has his own band in Salt Lake City, , God Bless all. musicians who give the rest of us pure joy, listening to their talents ❤

How in God's green earth, could this 1978 epic song NOT win Record of The Year at the Grammy Awards??
Gerry Rafferty created a masterpiece! That sax solo is one of the best of all-time! RIP Gerry, thank you for giving us great music.
Well said 👍🏴
Its probably too good for the academy to consider. And when they used to release an album in the 70s, the single off it was always the worse song? Why?
I read this somewhere else of You Tube, "One of the reason's Rafferty is not better known is that he famously hated the music industry and refused to do concerts or tv appearances to promote album sales for the CEO's of the record industry". Maybe that had something to do with it.
Because... the Grammys are ridiculous.
Nothing about the song is all that flashy. Just a great sound, great lyrics, great groove.
Man the 70's were so laidback and the best time to be a teenager listening to music..........
Right? I always say that. Things were so much more REAL back then! I miss the 70's so bad! My favorite era...

He wrote this song while staying at a friends place on Baker Street. He was frustrated with his old music contract that wouldn’t allow him to release any music for 3 years. During that time he wrote his best song!

This song just oozes the hot summer of '78.
yes exactly.
I believe it was 78?could be wrong. ..it's my fave from that summer...:)
It may depend where you were. I was in England in the summer of '76 - hot as hell, a drought. I was in New York in the summer of '78 - hot as hell. So, sure, both summers were hot. But this song is from '78.
I remember the summer of 76 never been one like it since, week after week of beautiful biking weather and just bought my first proper motorcycle, bliss.
During the summer of 78 I was on the HMCS Porte Quebec sailing around Vancouver Island and the BC Coast. Best summer of my life .
I've been a diehard metalhead for 40 years but this song is probably my favorite of all time.
What a fantastic comment
I grew up on slayer, but I remember hearing the baker street sax solo in an episode of the Simpsons as a kid and it was mind-opening
This song crosses boundaries. I was fortunate enough to remember hearing this blasting on local commercial radio in 1979, almost every day. I get the part, too, about loving metal - I followed Metallica and Slayer as a teenager, but Baker Street retained a special place in my heart even then, and does so to this day, forty three years later.
It’s that saxophone the song could contain nothing else but that and it would still be fantastic.
A lot of us are in your boat
Saw the name of this song in a comment under the Dave Ramsey show and decided to look it up. I love that musical introduction. That saxophone is everything 🎷🎷🎷🎶🎧❤
I so miss my soul mate he passed at 41 but we had 22 years and 2 great kids.
I hope that you'll find peace. Find joy in the two beautiful children you have been blessed with.
This always brings back memories of me aged 7. My Dad (now 80) used to be a carpenter and joiner. He was the driver for his mates so he'd be out of the house by 5 am collecting them. My Mum (RIP) would wake up with him to make him breakfast. I would sneak out of my bedroom and climb into their bed. I always loved listening to Terry Wogan on my Mums little red plastic radio propped on her dressing table. I would doze with songs like this and Bryan Ferry, Bee Gees playing in the background. I always remember this as being summertime or autumn for some reason . I loved watching the shadow of leaves from the tree outside our house dance against the curtains as the morning got lighter. My mum would then call up the stairs to wake me and my sister up for school. This song always reminds me of this! Love you always Mum xxx
I love the sentiment here. Songs like this one will always have a special place in our lives with wonderful memories like this.

Took a bit of convincing but I could see her facial expression change almost immediately. When it finished she was speechless, totally blown away! Guess i shouldn’t been surprised, her fav band is the Beatles.
I was young, single, and living in Los Angeles when this song came out. Some of my friends never did "give up the booze and the one-night stands" and they never made it out of L.A. alive. This song, with its evocative lyrics and crying sax and guitar, to me encapsulates the aimlessness and yearning of those years.
I imagine this song is about London but this could apply to almost any city in the world.
@@orourkedamusic I assumed it was about L.A. until I saw the double-decker buses. I remember hearing this song at the community pool when I was a kid. I took up saxophone, partially because of this and other songs of the time, but also, my dad still had his from back in the day, so that saved some money. He got to play with one or two somewhat known bands, and his sister sang in D.C. with Mama Cass (sp?) at some point. He went on to become a shrink, and my aunt became a nurse. Great song. Somewhat good memories. Teenage angst being what it is. :)
@@45CaliberCure London would make sense given his background. Apparently, he was in a band with the comedian Billy Connolly and this song is, at least in part, about both Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty's subsequent move to London and elements of his career in the music business in the following period. Baker Street is also a well known street in London (Sherlock Holmes, Jimi Hendrix, The tube station for madame tussauds etc )

True the song with the Saxophone takes me right back to a great era of good music and good nights out. It never ages and like you say it just gets better every time of listening.
@@michael7286 A step back in the time tunnel.
It's quite probably the greatest Scottish song of all time.
It definitely is. It doesn't have much competition though.❤
The quality of music then was better then today in 2024....
I completely agree. This is when musicians required talent to be successful.
The quality of life was better then,
Timeless piece of music, you will never get bored of this

The world we live in now knows nothing!
Gerry was a very talented man, he wrote Baker's Street, Stuck In The Middle With You, Right Down The Line, Night Owl. Very sad he died, but his songs will be forever here.
Absolutely, Gerry was the great voice of his great masterpiece! !♥️🙏🇺🇸
I'm watching Reservoir Dogs right now,
but I had to hear this!
I had Stuck in the Middle With You record, love that song; well all of Gerry’s music if you want to know the truth.
Only sad part about him dying is were gonna die too.. evenutally we all do
'Stuck In The Middle With You' is a good one. I like it more than 'Baker Street'.
Probably the best saxophone solo of all time !
this AND Careless Whisper by George Micheal. That sax is everything
Smooth operator by Sade is up there!
The sax in Turn The Page by Bob Seger is awesome
The Gunners Dream by Pink Floyd (same sax player) my personal favorite
It's good but Clarence Clemons Jungleland edges it I am afraid
One of my best songs from the 1970s . I can play this over and over . Such a masterpiece
Never gets old…Feels so good to listen too! Wish we could go back in time.
Absolutely. If it was possible to turn back time i would be gone in the blink of an eye.

One of the greatest guitar solos of all time, period.
Not to mention the sax solo that made the song.
Really just about anything that Uncle Ted is involved in will have an excellent solo and tasty riffs😁
Lets not get carried away
@@nodingleberrys Well maybe for just a short time

Truly a tragic genius. Exquisite song and music.
Music is the closest thing to a time machine we have 💕
Brilliant comment!! Sitting drunk at a bar one night long ago a friend drunk said to me,,"you know ,,time is a place" I said I gotta go home now and think about that..I'm still thinking today 50 yrs later.
takes me straight back to the summer of 1978
So incredibly well said and accurately described 🥰
There are songs that transform you, there are songs that transport you, there are songs that stay with you forever and then there’s Baker Street.
Well said
I loved it back in 78’ and love and appriciate it even more now. 2024.
I remember listening to this song in my headphones when I was like 11 years old and the song was new and I wasn't old enough to understand that I was hearing something exceptional. It was just a song on the radio that I had some sort of connection to... Perhaps the sax, the guitar, the smooth vocal delivery, the subtle(?) discontent in the lyrics, the way that the music felt like it surrounded me. Can't put my finger on it, but this song remains in my top 10 over half a century later.
You knew it was a classic at 11. I was 12 and it takes me back to such a simpler time.
Scotland's finest ☞ Gerry Rafferty with his Most Popular song♫ in 1978.
R.I.P. Gerry ✞ You will be always be Remembered as a Great Musician♩♪ and Creative Songwriter ♮♭♯
For me all yhe credit needs to go to the saxophone guy
+DJ MEK Gerry Rafferty wrote the saxophone part.
Patrick Quinlan yeah but the saxophone guy didn't got payed at all so at least he deserves some credit
+DJ MEK He got plenty of credit. He even claimed he wrote the part but Gerry played it already on guitar. He was a session musician and he got paid for the session as is the custom. He also played on several other numbers.
Nice... too right!!
The only singer who always had the mic two feet away. Rip Gerry Rafferty.
This musical theme is magnificent
💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙 ... the UK ... the fountain of amazing music ... !!!
This song, in particular, brings me back to my childhood in the 70s more than any other song. When I hear it, I literally see my surroundings through a young child's eyes, from pushing a coin into a phone box calling home, to riding on the top deck of the bus (49A) where people were smoking, to joining the Boys Brigade (26th Brighton), or playing in the 67 Centre (Moulsecoomb)... Proud to have grown up where I did in the 70s, even if we had very little financially, we had mates, we had fresh air... Crazy looking back on your life when you had absolutely no clue as to where you would end up:) For me, coming from a poor area, I ended up becoming an English teacher - actually worked in a school in Baker Street, then lived and worked in Japan 18 years before moving to Italy.💫 Life is all about moving forwards, but it's important to look back and remember your beginnings.
Wow! What a trip! Baker St. to Italy, via Japan. ☺💙🎶
I love how you bring me along your walk down memory lane! Thank you from another child of the 70s
😊
Good story but the important thing about this song you forget to mention.......
Have your fun by all means but don't forget to give up the booze and the one night stands
It really is the secret to success
Yes, indeed. Thanks for sharing a piece of you .
Greatest saxophone solo on earth

Candidate for one of the best songs ever written.
Raphael Ravenscroft's saxophone in this masterpiece is one of the most famous and beautiful of the 20th century.
Whenever I'm anywhere near Baker street, or even hear the name, I break into man air-saxophone routine. Love this so much
Who knew this song was autobiographical? RIP Gerry. Amazing talent.
I did ✋
I'm just here because I'm lonely and missing the 70s.
I loved the 70s!
An era where hope was still a thing
Me too
No one is around
I'm doing the nightshift and just put this on for some feel good music and nostalgia.
This is the 70s in a nutshell. This song encapsulates what it was all about. It just does.
I'm not going to screech and moan about how "this is real music and nothing today compares, blah blah blah." That's for tone-deaf, geriatric losers.
Nope. I'm not a backward-looking Boomer. I do acknowledge that there's plenty of good quality music out there today.
I was in middle school when this song came out and was thrilled every time it came on the AM radio, so much so that I bought the vinyl LP. I originally thought Rafferty was American as his sound had a distinctly jazzy American vibe, but I was surprised to learn that he hailed from Scotland. Regardless, he was a phenomenal artist. This song proves it.
All I'm saying is that this tune is a masterpiece and Rafferty was amazing as a musician, vocalist, lyricist, arranger and band leader.
Thank you for posting this awesome tune!
One of the BEST songs ever recorded
I'm beginning to think this could just be the greatest song of all time
Feel calm smile and nice feeling🤗
Either this or Axl's Theme from Beverly Hills Cop
Head to head with Al Stewart's " Year of the Cat"...unforgettable songs
@@adrianfallavollita3247 I second that!
Sure is...just like myself, circa 1978
This one of my favorite songs from the 1970’s. I haven’t listened to it for quite a while but it definitely stirring up memories from my teenage years.
Diese Studioversion ist nicht zu toppen. Da stimmt einfach alles. Ein Fest für die Ohren!
