And that just goes to show you that in the last erra we really were at a points where it was the games that were the bottleneck, not the hardware. World size, density, gameplay, npc interactions, everything is limited by the programmers, not the hardware. Next gen pushed a new raytracing feature and sealed in the ability for some higher framerates (something pc has been doing for ages now) and bump the resolutions, but over all we wont see any difference in world sizes, npc activities, story, gameplay, ect.

It's down to diminishing returns in improvements to visual fidelity. These type of cross then games weren't possible even coming from 7th to 8th gen. The different between ps3 and ps4 version of the same game would just be immediately visible without needing any kind of comparison. Bad comparison (and old comment) but I played H:ZD on PC with maxed settings, and then I played H:FW on an og ps4 and aside from the framerate, the visuals of H:FW are so much stunningly better it's not even close. It's not just the asset quality, it's the art direction and modeling work. Characters feel a lot more like People, there's a lot more use of contrast in environmental visuals, and the camera work in setpieces is even better. H:ZD is great but it feels like just a proof of concept compared to FW.

      Killzone 4: Shadow Fall - PS4
All three of the above titles I named paled in comparison to the later games the system would see. E.G. the following:
      God of War 2 - PS2
      Last of Us - PS3
      Ghosts of Tsushima - PS4
And why is that? Because no one, and I mean no one, can truly fully take advantage of hardware at launch. It's not humanly possible. When you've spent more time with a system and you've learned it's ins and outs, you can pull off some truly amazing feats on the system. Some other late console cycle games I admire are games like Ristar on Genesis (just look at all the colors and unique animations), the Spyro series on PS1 (awesome draw distance technique), and this is more mid cycle but Jak 2 on PS2. We'll start seeing the true power of PS5 within the last two to three years of the console.

But once you see how good the game looks on newer consoles, it kinda bugs you because you know you're not getting the best version of the game and it doesn't look as good anymore. But the ps4 version is still great looking nonetheless. I'm playing it on ps5 & I'm probably never going back to the ps4 again after experiencing what 4k & 60 fps feels like with these next-gen games. Such high quality comparison videos like this in 60 fps make Last Gen version's 30 fps framerate always seem better and more smooth than it actually is. PS4 versions are still sick though. Now with the patched peformance mode the best way is to play the game in 60 fps on the PS5 and it's a difference to the PS4, it's way more smooth with a much cleaner look with more details and less pop in and better lighting. Now might be a sweet spot where these new forms of tech are pricy and OLED is now reasonably established to be more affordable (also then having better burn-in protection & brighter output than before) as long as you have a space where you can control the lighting as OLED can be a fair amount dimmer than LCD (reducing the light in the room/area then makes that not matter much, if at all.)

The way Guerrilla keeps optimizing this engine is simply incredible. The game looks amazing even on PS4, but it’s really not surprising considering the first game is still one of the prettiest games out there even by today’s standards. It being fully open world makes it all the more impressive. I remember playing Death Stranding and thinking wow, this engine has really come a long way since Killzone: Shadow Fall. Death Stranding’s graphics are unbelievable, and now Forbidden West is here to take the crown again. It’s a massive achievement to pull off these visuals not just for an open world game, but for an open world game that has so much going on everywhere you go in terms of huge enemies on screen, combat, NPCs, wild life, etc.

And no, open world racing games aren’t impressive, the maps are vastly empty, which obviously means they could just focus on making detailed car models and nothing else.

This is why racing games never win GOTY either. They’re incredibly basic and Forza Horizon 5 is really no different than any other racing game. It looks pretty because it’s on new hardware, but it doesn’t change the fact that racing games are empty as a whole, and that developers only have to focus on two things: car models and environment. That’s all. The less things are rendered on screen, the more they can focus on one or two things.

Except maybe that the overly-crisp stop-motion looking effect I've seen on PS5 will be absent on the PS4 version, which is the version I'll be playing.
It's nice to know that the version that's most visually appealing (to me) will be the one that I get to play. I don't like overly crisp over-sharpened picture. I prefer my image a little softer. I also don't really like how these extreme frame-rates look (when I notice them at all) so I hope when all TVs and consoles are running at 120fps there will be a way to dial it back down to 60fps for people like me who don't like the way 120fps looks.

I seem to be having a very different experience on PS5. Moments of frame rate instability in performance mode, very annoying pop-in in some places as well as Aloy clipping through objects (particularly glaring on a particular signal tower). Also nearly got stuck on the environment once as the collision detection seems as iffy as Zero Dawn, made kinda worse by the new climbing/gliding as you transition between climbable objects and ones that cannot.
Its not quite as terrible as the above makes it sound mind you, but its the fact it will be absolutely 100% in one section then these things happen that makes it feel more jarring.
Seeing you once again talk about how stable it is, I think I need to find a campfire and reboot the console as something just seems off with my experience.
UPDATE: Looks like its having issues with my external SSD which was possibly the issue as the background OS was seeing it disappear. Very odd timing as my Xbox external HDD also died a few days ago.

Ps5 has significantly more memory for textures, higher resolution, and the cpu power for higher quality effects. If you are still on a ps4 now you are just in it for the game and not really hard up on the visuals. PS4Pro users are the ones who have spent additional money to improve visuals over the past several years while making their way to the ps5, and it is precisely why videos like these needs to be between the ps4pro and ps5 so we can judge if the visuals in games are at the level to make the financial jump now or can we wait?

But in a game where precision is key and you need to be able to knock an object off of a target's back that's moving 60 frames per second makes a huge difference.

@@robosergTV This is simply not true. 120 FPS is a luxury that most people can live without, and I am a native PC gamer... It's great, but going from 60 to 120 is NOT the same as going from 30 to 60. 30 FPS is almost unplayable for a lot of people, but 60 FPS is a standard everyone can get on board with and support (talking about the devs). When you go from 30 to 60, you're going from difficult to play to playable and enjoyable. When you go from 60 to 120, the difference is not as pronounced and not the same since 60 FPS is quite good. Sure 120 > 60, but the playability from 30 to 60 is vastly different. I would rather play a beautiful 4K/60 FPS game instead of 1080p/120. There may be mathematical symmetry in the differences, but going from 30 to 60 is a far different animal then going from 60 to 120.
When the day comes that we can hit arbitrary frame rates without compromise to fidelity, then we will talk about 120 being standardized.

So maybe this is one part of *the recipe for a great launch: focus on just one ecosystem* (here it's PlayStation, CP2077 should have been PC only at first, Forza on XBox ...) and bring the other platforms a year or so later! This way each system gets a focus on launch and combines the resources of a dev team!

At position 4:45 you see a shot with tree covered skyscapers. The PS5 is on the left in its performance mode (60FPS) stacked up next to the PS4 Pro (1800p) on the right. To me the stability of the picture from the PS4 Pro is noticeably higher. Look at the trees on top of the middle and right skyscaper and you'll notice a flickering in the PS5 footage while on the PS4 pro it's much more stable resulting in a sharper impression even tough both are supposed to be checkerboarded 1800p. And with double the framerate, I thought the result would be a sharper checkerboard image opposed to a 30FPS one. But here, it seems the 1800p 30 FPS image from the PS4 pro is clearly sharper than the 1800p 60 FPS image from the PS5. Yes, the LOD of the trees is different but I have seen other / better suited comparison shots in other videos where for example the near camera grass foilage is also causing flickering on PS5 performance mode whereas on PS4 Pro it's not flickering. I am really wondering why it is not the other way around: That the 60 FPS mode is looking sharper than the 30 FPS PS4 Pro. Usually this should be the case. But as far as I can tell by watching various comparison videos, it seems the PS4 Pro 30FPS 1800p checkerboard is clearly delivering a sharper experience when put it up next to the PS5's performance mode. In short it's like: 1800p CB in PS5 Perf mode = shimmering and flickering around foilage. 1800p CB on PS4 Pro = delivers a clearer and smoother foilage rendering.

I wonder why Digital Foundry (or anybody else) did not notice this.
What I heared tough is that without the day one patch the PerfMode runs in lower res than with day one patch. So maybe it's 1300ish without dayone patch and 1600ish with dayone patch.
We have been told that CBR works better with higher framerates. You could see this easily on Horizon Zero Dawn where PS5 look a bit sharper than PS4 Pro (due to running 60 FPS instead of 30) - so my conclusion would be that either PS5 PerfMode of Forbidden West has to look better than PS4 Pro (which it does not) or that PS5 PerfMode runs with a lower res than PS4 Pro.

@@jaroslavmrazek5752 If you'll watch DF's video on the PS5 update for Horizon Zero Dawn, in it it's clearly stated that the checkerboard rendering is looking sharper and crisper on the PS5 compared to the PS4 Pro due to running with 60 FPS which helps because previous frame reconstruction proceess is being double as fast. So basically the checkerboarding process itself is getting a big boost as well. It's logical that this may increase image clarity. But now with Horizon Forbidden West it seems to being the opposite? Like the PS4 Pro is looking crisper / sharper and having less flicker on especially the foilage?
Digital Foundry mentioned they like to step back from the pure "pixel counting" and are figuring out a way to rate "image clarity" instead. Which makes sense to me. But what I can see thus far with Horizon Forbidden West is the clearer image being on the 30 FPS checkerboard and not on the 60FPS checkerboard. Maybe one of the staff is looking into the comments and will dig a bit deeper into comparing the PS4 Pro vs. the PS5 PerfMode visual clarity.

As a PC "Gamer" for the past ten years I always assumed a rather snobbish position against consoles. What drove me to build a PC in the first place was when i had gotten an Xbox One. I wanted a PS4 but they were nowhere to be found at the time. So I settled with the inferior product, albeit the more expensive one. So, with my next gen hopes and dreams intact, i rushed home with my new console and i just couldnt wait to be apart of it - the next generation of gaming. I bought Battlefield 4 top go with it to really feel and see it and... it was the most underwhelming "next gen" experience i think anyone could ever have. I was so disappointed at the feeble 720p resolution and the low frame rate, even Black flag was in 720p. So, I sold the Xbox and used the money to help build my first PC, it was a very trying experience but I never looked back.
Then the PS5 became more readily available last week. I just got one last week, they were available and i had the money so i thought "why not?" and... wow. I was not expecting THAT level of performance. It truly feels next gen and somehow just blows my current PC out of the water.

It's not so bad that it ruins the experience though, and I'm still glad I made the choice to get this game, even if I can't afford the latest hardware.

    Another great analysis.
I'm curious to see if running a PS4 Pro with an SSD would improve the pop-in situation.

I'm doing just that (samsung 860evo I think) and haven't seen a single pop-in, but I'm not that far into the the game yet. It looks pretty but I think I'm less impressed than with the HZD, the environments seem too messy (too many colors and elements) for my taste, but that's just an art direction thing, not a technical issue.

lol nope it doesn't work like that..even IF you use the ps4 pro with an SSD it will not be able to fully USE the speed of the SSD

    • @UniversalBuilder
      @UniversalBuilder 2 роки тому

@@infrasonicrebasses4763 Cleary the game has to be coded with the SSD as a given, which is not the case on the PS4 Pro version. That being said, I don't see any pop-in issues. I see something lese that might be related to the SSD though : something, when I move really fast for whatever reason (speedy mount, jump from heights with the glide), I get a 1-2 seconds of black screen, like the rest of the system is trying to catch up where I am. But there's no graphical issues whatsoever like things not loading, when the screen comes back everything is fine.

The fluidity of 60fps is much more valuable than bit more sharpnes, which you actually see only on still screens. Once you move the camera (and you are moving all the time) you loose all this sharpness for 30fps choppines.
People say to me: "once you play 1h in 30fps your eyes will adopt to it". And I say to them: "once you play 5 minutes in 60fps, you will forget that it was only a bit sharper and you'll enjoy constant fluidity"

Absolute masterclass in optimisation by Guerrilla. The fact that it smoothly runs on both systems but pushes both of their hardware to the limits is incredible.

So why is there no mention of how bad this game looks in performance mode?? It ain’t just me, a lot of people like me are saying this game looks not up to par as other first party titles in performance mode. Very interesting y’all did not mention any of this.

🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑 - DF can't afford to be harsh towards Sony......😉
Performance mode is really the only way to play this game, but it looks quite blurry. 30fps feels completely sluggish and not "next-gen" at all.😬
Hope they patch the performance mode eventually.🤞
The same with that 1080p/60fps mode in Dying light 2......... Not really next-gen either ....

This game is a stunner on Ps5! I played the 1st 2 hours last night on my Samsung Q90T with Game motion plus. If you use that mode, it makes 30fps feel like 60 and I love it. If you own a Ps5 I'd say this game is an obligatory buy to see what your system is capable of. Incredible graphics!

Yes many people don't know even though game motion plus does give a little bit of input delay it just makes so much difference from 30fps to 60fps

Not sure if you guys at Digital Foundry noticed...but I noticed on my PS5 there was a setting to auto-load back into gameplay before the game had time to even show the tip card that happen during loading and fast travel screens. Basically it can load so quickly....the loading screen doesn't even have to to appear before the PS5 has loaded enough to continue back into gameplay. Nearly instantaneous sometimes so far in my experience. So I wonder if these guys saw that setting and switched it to automatically load without tip screen.

Im pretty sure they did the tests with that setting On, otherwise he would have mentioned that settings since it is something new never seen before in other games.
