Playing on "Performance with RT" mode. It's an absolute treat. Insomniac are really tech wizards
They’ve improved tremendously that’s for sure.
I still remember back in the early PS3 days, they were really struggling behind other devs if you go back to Resistance 1 and 2 for example (just purely on a technical level). Then back on the PS2 they borrowed the engine from Naughty Dog.
Resistance 3 they made huge strides forward, but seems to me they just weren’t on the technical level of Naughty Dog/Guerilla/Santa Monica til the PS4 era where they’ve done really well technically.
Perhaps they had a staff change/expansion or perhaps they simply have done better with a more traditional hardware architecture.
They really are a brilliant studio. SSR artefacts always catch my eye these days. So glad they're giving us the best of both worlds.
I don't understand as if you have rt on as you want the game to look the best but yet it's on performance mode not its best looking mode, on pc you would want to enable both , otherwise what's the point as the game is not the best it could be on either
I'm just absolutely blown away by ether mode in all honesty. This game literally looks better than some Pixar movies!
Agreed
Can't wait to see what naughty dog has in store for us
Nice to see that Ratchet and Clank is back to running at 60 fps

P.S i do not That i found out:)
I wanna plug into my 120fps tv port but really dont wanna have to swap the series x and ps5 in and outta that port when i go from 120fps halo to ratchet and clank because i only have one port thats 120fps.
@@calelsun do you have a Samsung q80 or Q90T? I’m in the same boat. I have my Series X hooked up and PS5 hooked up to my TV and switched PS5 to hdmi 2.0 port and put my Series X to then HDMI 2.1 port. I will now be hooking up my pc to the HDMI 2.1 port to try my 3070 to try some games to see how it works. I should have just bought the LG CX.
@@Patrick-tw7nr You definitely shouldn't have bought a Samsung TV.
At least Sony provides 2 ports while LG provides 4.
We're already in next gen territory with new hardware, there's no reason for any games to be running lower than 60 fps.
I think that I and many others assumed that RT on consoles would be 30fps only, It's nice to be proven wrong. A good reconstruction method combined with a reasonable loss of resolution and a slight downgrade are perfectly acceptable concessions for both a rock-solid 60fps and good looking RT.
Won’t miss those pixels while playing anyway.
@@MasterMayhem78 ya and when you are fighting the game actually looks better even with the lower res cause you lose so much of that 4K clarity when playing at 30 FPS
@@mitchellp7739 Exactly, 60 fps is not just about smoothness, it looks better when in action than 30fps
@@MasterMayhem78 I feel like devs should drop 30fps altogether and focus on a solid 60fps, especially if they can get good looking RT and reasonably high pixel numbers. I'm very impressed with Insomniac, it would be interesting to see if they could improve the RT mode in Spider-Man.
60 FPS with 4K and Full Ray Tracing is absolutely possible on PS5. 4A Games is releasing a patch this time next week with full ray tracing in 4k at 60 fps for Metro Exodus. Insomniac just didn't do it for whatever reason. Maybe the game was well into development before they pushed the limits or maybe they just wanted to give fans the option. Or that's just the system they built their games on that doesn't make it possible for them.
It's great to know console gamers can finally get PC graphics and these are basically launch titles. In 3-4 years time these games will look absolutely insane.
Been playing performance ray tracing mode and I love it
@2BuckGeo Quality mode looks nice, but once you go 60fps, it's hard to go back. 60RT is well worth the slight graphical downgrade.
@2BuckGeo nah. Performance is so much smoother
ill never go quality if it doesnt include 60fps, been missing that for two gens now and its about time its here. so much better to play. imagine fucking Bloodborne in 60fps instead of fucking 15-30 fps...
Performance rt is the best
@@donnydutchmen1284 I noticed there was a lot of trickery in making the environments look bigger than they are, and I agree, beyond a certain point past the immediate gameplay environment the quality drops a lot. Still a great looking game overall.
Performance RT for me no doubt, especially seeing how locked in that frame rate is.

@@markusklein7222 nope just resolution and it’s not 1080p it’s literally at any resolution it needs to lock at 60fps. So it’s anywhere from 1080p up to 2160p as the target

@@kostasbousbouras2654 Yeah and it's just the first generation ps5 games. If it even remotely follows the same path as the ps4 games will look GODLY in a couple years, especially with all the advancements w unreal engine 5.
Even crazier is that Sony revealed in the next few months they are expecting to break even with the disc version of PS5 meaning after that they will profit off the unit sales. 10 TFLOP RDNA 2 GPU with hardware Ray-tracing, industry leading I/O speeds, 8 core Zen 2 CPU, liquid metal cooling, dedicated audio processors, innovative controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a $500 package that they will profit off in less than a year. First Gen game for PS5 and we all know what this means. Console history has shown that as time passes games become better and better. I mean so much possibilities and processing power gets lost by this 4K bullshit. Imagine if every game aimed 1080p this gen. The visuals would be insane…
That blur on the frame time graph is a super nice addition! Much easier to view 🥳
By large, best game until now in the generation. RT + solid 60fps is a great job !!!
Spider-Man Remastered is better but that’s kinda cheating lol
Performance RT is the perfect medium.. game looks really sharp, even with RT and 60fps.. this is the future for ps5 games going forward
I feel like last gen Naughty Dog always set the bar what's possible on a console but this generation so far Insomniac showed everybody how it's done. They shipped multiple polished games in a short time of each other and as mentioned in the video even managed to remaster the original Spiderman while having a crunch free work environment. These guys are wizards and I will gladly support this behavior with my wallet. Well done Insomniac.
The future is 4k60 with RT. Probably after AMD FSR will be in the console
@@ramiyohay7286 FSR is basically an open version of what Insomniac are doing here, lower resolution temporally interpolated into a higher one.
Its only really a big deal for certain developers as most mainstream engines already have their own implementations of doing the same thing and engine-specific ones are generally better as they can work on the entire pipeline rather than just AFTER the scene was rendered.
I didn't care for the quality drop in performance rt over 30fps because I noticed it on my 77in anyway still the best looking game iv Played so far been playing 30fps or 60fps for year im not going to act like higher fidelity at 30fps is bad now when for years it was the normal

It still outputs at 4k, its just the internal resolution mixed with the temporal injection that makes it still look fantastic!
Somone trying to bug for me
Even on my pc 4k monitor is pretty hard to notice the difference. And I sit close. To me 4k is either overrated or there are some very good upscaling methods in use here
@@Lykon Little bit of both I think. Unless you sit very close to a large 4k screen and like to pause the game to really look at the background details it's a bit redundant to have a full 4k/30fps option.
Great timing with the video! You guys are the best!
"By and large" I enjoy these technical analysis. They help me understand the little details
Same here and it encourages developers to fix issues they might otherwise have missed.
I think Insomniac just paid itself up in a 6 months period
Spiderman Remastered for PS5
Miles Morales for PS5 and PS4
Ratchet and Clank for PS5
For real. Sony just needs to let them do what ever they want from now on. They clearly have the talent and creativity to do so.
That is why I bought this game and Spider-Man Miles Morales Ultimate Edit at full price at launch. If the quality and value is there, it is worth paying and supporting the business that put out good product that I’m willing to pay for. Thad doesn’t just go for video games. Exception is the 3070 i paid 639.00 for but that is another story!
@@MWKRider they have been doing that XD from what i've heard so far Sony very rarely meddles too much with their devs on what to make and how to make it
Exactly, they've always been one of my favorite devs and was wondering if there would ever be the day when they'd finally be bought by someone and if they did I always hoped it would be Sony.
I feel like if they had just said screw being independent all those years ago and accepted the buyout by Sony then we would've gotten the Fuse game they actually wanted to make and not that bland military game we ended up with.
Both spider man games are in my opinion not worth buying. At a discount SM is possibly worth it. MM on the other hand I would not even accept for free.
However Ratchet and Clank makes up for that. Totally a game worth full price.

If you aren't sitting in front of a 8k monitor that is less than 1.5 feet from your face I found virtually zero reason to play on anything other than performance with RT. The game looks incredible and plays beautifully
Agree! Performance RT is...
THE WAY
Performance mode for me
I am gaming on a 70 inch television and I absolutely can tell the difference between Performance RT and Fidelity. Performance RT definitely looks good, but there's no reason to suggest the difference between the "good" modes is razor thin.
Why 8K?... Because it would "stretch" 4K across it?... You can tell the difference between 1080p and HIGHER resolutions on a 1080p monitor as well, you know. - And no, it doesn't matter that the monitor doesn't have more pixels, because it still tightens up the image-quality and reduces jaggs and all that kind of stuff. - So the native resolution of screen doesn't matter as much as its size. The larger it is, the more precise you could inspect or notice it, of course in combination with the distance you're seeing it from.
I'm not arguing that Performance RT isn't good enough, but I'm saying you can still tell a difference without a huge screen or one that is even 8K. - But casually, yes, Performance RT.
I think it's fine for tv but for people playing on a 4k monitor, it's quite visible.
I believe in 60fps+Rt supremacy.

Fine, you guys sold me on playing performance rt
After further testing the same areas in performance vs performance rt mode I have to disagree with the opinions of DF. I know its subjective so play what looks best for you, but for me, regular performance mode is the way to go. I guess it might depend what panel you are using and how close you sit to it as well. For me, performance with RT is way better in terms of visual clarity. The resolution drop is extremely noticeable to my eyes especially when in heavy combat. Everything is so much crisper and cleaner looking in performance mode. This is on an LG CX OLED and I do sit rather close. For me, a lot of the next-gen feel comes from the high resolution. In performance rt mode it feels like I'm playing my PS4 with better graphics but same resolution. I've had access to RayTracing since day one with my 2080ti and I've tried hard to love it. In the end though I've just never been able to enjoy it due to the compromises in FPS or resolution. Same goes for this new gen of consoles so far. Great vid DF, but why they fall like that 7:38 😂
1:37 That jump from 30 fps to 60 fps is so transformative if there's going to be one. Tell me that you are fine playing games at 30 fps when you could have 60 fps instead? I really hope 30 fps as a target for consoles is finally dead.
If you play watch dogs legions with 60 fps mode enabled it's a totally different game. Sony does make smooth 30 fps game modes. but watch dogs.. Man I felt sick playing it at 30. It's so bad.
You know, I used to think the same way, but on my hella expensive 65" OLED TV I actually prefer the fidelity mode. It only took me 10 minutes to get used to 30 fps, and the added density, VFX quality and ray-tracing quality is just totally worth it. It looks absolutely gorgeous.
Also, I know the whole 30 fps is more cinematic thing is a meme at this point, but genuinely, watching the cutscenes in fidelity mode just feel like watching an animated movie, whereas the performance modes feel more like video game cutscenes. Not that it's bad that they feel like video game cutscenes, I just really enjoying feeling like I'm playing a Pixar quality movie.
I don’t think so, after 2-3 years players are going to expect more in terms of graphics. UE5 is already at 1080p at 30 fps on console. But this does mean 60 fps can be more feasible than last gen due to less compromises.
I would never think I'd even try 30fps vs 60 RT, but I was surprised how easily I got used to Monster Hunter Rise recently. I was even swapping back and forth between World and Rise and it's super jarring at first, but oddly my mind adjusted pretty quickly.
I'm going to play around at least in Fidelity a bit whereas it was a never touch it before. I'm sure though I'll still run Performance RT in the end.
well 30fps target is not dead because this game has 30fps target, same with Demon Souls, Forbidden West, Miles Morales and I'm 99% sure GoW2 will have 30fps target too.
But pretty much EVERY other aaa studio other than sony's target 60fps now.
Quality mode for me after a few hours of playing, I’ve swapped back and fourth and yeah 60fps is good but I am enjoying the fancy bells and whistles.
Can definitely notice the drop in visuals in the performance modes
Same here, the sharpness is noticeable and if it’s not a multiplayer game, I don’t really need 60fps. The motion blur does a good enough job to enjoy quality mode at 30fps
Me too running at 30 FPS! can’t let go of how nice it looks at 4K.
By drop in visuals, you mean resolution right ?
Cause from what they're saying, you're not getting much more with the Quality mode. I could be wrong though

Looks great. I'd just like to have a simple bilinear filter applied to reflections to upscale them by a factor of 3*3, that way el they might lose a little bit of detail, but completely eliminate aliasing in the process.

I’ve been playing it on performance rt too but I can’t deny that fidelity mode looks so much better. But 60 fps is pretty much mandatory so I can’t go fidelity lol.
I use this mode as well and it looks amazing on CX
@@MadPropzBaller yea i think raytrace performance is the way to go
@@lorenzov.5380 yea
@@lorenzov.5380 Same bro. Even with top tier graphics 60 frames is undoubtedly always my go to. It’s why I have Performance mode on by default
a whole 'nother level on its own
15:02….. the moment we were all waiting for! Absolutely awesome! You’ve just sold another copy, thank you both :). How do Insomniac Games keep knocking it out of the park like this?
So friggin pumped for when I get home. Games downloading now and this video is just what I needed on my lunch break
I can't believe how identical the visuals are across all modes. What a tremendous achievement! Even with Raytracing off this game is just gorgeous.
I watched this on my 4k TV and in all honesty, is the first time I can't see a difference between performance RT and Quality. Definitely going for Performance RT.
To be honest this video can’t convey the difference in lighting well. Fidelity looks much better IMO after I tested on the first two levels. Can’t put my exact finger on it but the combination of lighting and resolution are just pure eye candy on fidelity.
@@edwardcalabig3693 most of the differences you see are likely only because you tell yourself you see the difference. I have a 65 inch 4K TV and aside from mentally knowing fidelity looks better I couldn’t really actually tell. Barely any difference in visuals yet double the frame rate is a no brainer
@@mitchellp7739 I’m usually a stickler for frames (mainly a PC gamer) but something about fidelity looks much better. I noticed a big difference when you first arrive at the bazaar. Performance RT looked like a game, whereas fidelity looked like a world. The volumetric lighting made a big difference for me.
It's because of youtube compression and Ratchet uses A LOT of blurring. Heavy motion blur, even vignette is blurred ALWAYS even standing still. The temporal injection aa creates jitter also makes it look soft.
@@vandammage1747 everything you just said was false. Good try though
Picking up the game today cant wait to play it!
I love how this game looks, and I love this video
Everybody says performance rt but fidelity and ps5 in resolution mode on an oled is spectacular. I know they say the 1440 resolution isn’t a difference but yes it is. When i play in performance clank feels bigger and like the world is small and i can see more things on my screen at once. In fidelity/resolution i feel like a fly in a huge world. I honestly think it’s more immersive. I know the resolution is for far away things zoomed in but i swear it seems to make the whole world bigger. I’m telling you its 2 different games😂 make sure you change the settings on your ps5 too not just the in game one
Not everyone im playing in fidelity and I was blown away last night visually graphics are mint. I wasn't impressed with the look of performance rt looked artifical and digital looking sounds silly but fake and overly bright. Framerate 30fps isn't as bad as people are making out I switched from 60 and it took me 10mins to adjust.
For this game im preferring graphics and a locked 30 over a lower resolution 60. First game I've played this way as im normally a performance guy I played some spiderman remastered yesterday and I prefer 60 rt in that game but in R&C the visuals take too much of a hit in performance rt. If you compare ray tracing colour depth and detail its night and day. I'm suprised people aren't noticing.
@@loganvggvv641 your so true this game is perfect in fidelity. Same for Spider-Man maybe 30 isn’t as good because it has one huge map and r&c is smaller field you can explore ay a time . It’s crazy because insomniac made both but r&c fidelity is what they need to aim for in future titles if not better. When i go performance it looks smaller world imo . I can’t be the only one who notices how one mode the world looks small and the other it looks huge 😂
@@greekfreak384 I think it’s the depth of field effects. In fidelity mode they’re absolutely off the chain. It’s especially obvious when you’re aiming at an enemy. Really gives it that Pixar movie feel. The extra focus detail gives the scene so much more depth, making the world seem bigger. I think it’s the most noticeable difference vs the performance modes, has more of an impact than even the ray tracing, imo.
After years of saying 60fps isn't worth it, console gamers finally get it.
Totally agree
it's not worth it when it means dropping the resolution down to 720 (unless you are playing a game that cannot function below 60fps)
Great video guys! It's great seeing all these games coming with 60fps modes and PS4 games getting PS5 60fps upgrades.. It's so jarring to go back and play a 30fps game!
DF might benefit from mentioning the dualsense features or feeling while playing…great video!
Star wars jedi fallen order ps5 Version is out now, please make a tech Review 🙌🏻
After playing a couple of hours this is the best looking video game ever made up to this point! The lads on here don't quite do it justice as i know they're not into the game. They even said as much on their Ratchet preview video.
They literally said it’s the best looking game this gen.
Who cares about looks. Doesn't play that much different gameplay wise from the previous one, looks meh gameplay wise.
@@ea-sk8er_775 Yep i agree. Gameplay is the most important. And that's where games have stagnated and really need to see innovation this gen.
@@indeed596 definitely, but more more all I'm seeing people rate the game on how good it looks. A game will look really good but one bad model and suddenly the whole is crap with no regards to Gameplay. It's really quite frustrating. Games are meant to be played, sure good graphics is a bonus, but gameplay is King. That's why for now I'll stick to my PC so I can play awesome games from whatever generation I want. Go from playing super Mario all stars to quake 2, to battlefield bad company 2, and then Control, all in the same day. Gameplay is King.
The game should have given you the abilities for dashing earlier it feels too slow and they want you to take cover too often for some god awful reason. It does get better later but I'll be honest I turned the game off and went to play a game that is 11 years old and had more fun. Amazing animations and graphics are cool but they should have done something more to the games formula.
What’s understated is the particle effects in fidelity mode compared to alternate modes. In fidelity mode when smashing boxes you get way more little wood shards.. that’s jus one example. Fidelity mode is still best over all artistic experience.. if you want it smooth go RT Performance
Switched to performance RT pretty much straight away and never looked back. So good
Seeing them side by side, I would never pick 4K/30fps instead of 60fps with a bit lower resolution.
It's kind of absurd how little difference there is between the performance RT mode and the quality mode in terms of perceived resolution. I feel like at this point these upscaling methods are getting so advanced that it's kind of a waste of resources for devs to target anything above native 1800p. I mean, the performance RT mode here TOPS OUT at 1440p and in all the side-by-side comparisons with quality mode it's kind of comically difficult to pick out any truly noticeable differences (aside from crowd density in that one scene).
Pretty nuts.
On a monitor it'd definitely be more noticeable. But even then it probably isn't worth it.
The higher the resolution gets the less difference you see. 240p vs 1080p? Very very huge difference.1080 vs 4k? Still a good difference but not that much like before. 4k vs 8k? Not that much difference. And at some point like 8k vs 16k it doesnt even matter anymore.
@@killerklinge52 I have to disagree with the opinions of DF. To each their own but I'm running this game in performance mode, same with Spiderman.
@@BeHempy RT cost so much ressources its crazy you have to know they just use like 5% RT in these games and its still cost twice as many ressources. For me RT is playstation6 nextgen stuff. I have a 4k HDR panel too thats why i say you still see a good difference between 1080p and 1440,1800, checkerboard 4k. But yea for me it willbe the performance mode too playing at 1800p with 60fps with this pixar like graphic its amazing
@@killerklinge52 Yeah it does look amazing in performance mode for sure, I also kept thinking how this looks like a Pixar movie in real time. In terms of the future of RT, I guess it will come to a point where the RT usage is so profound that I will have to use it. For example, if the RT in Rift Apart utilized RT lighting, shadows, and reflections and it was a literal game changer I might be willing to accept the lower res. But it's not. Unless I'm standing there analyzing reflections I barely notice that it's there. Good to know I'm not alone.
As always - thank you for the video! I am always afraid I will lose something significant not using the Quality mode, but 30FPS for a lifelong PC player is kind of a tough pill to swallow. Knowing I can do 60FPS Ray Tracing Performance mode sacrificing a bit of resolution and clarity and have that recommended by you is enough for me to know that this is the quality option to play the game at.
Best way to play is and always will be - the DF way. Thank you for another great video!
R&C Is the best looking game on any platform PERIOD.
Please do a Final Fantasy VII Intergrade PS5 comparison with PS4!
Respect Digital Foundry, you are the best
This is what I was waiting for. Thank you for the good news.
Reflections are nice and all, but my preference is Fidelity.
I'm still wonder for those who were saying Downgrade because so far I didn't see any of it right? but you know weird experts were saying all about PS5 RDNA 1.5 and also cant handle Fidelity fx but guess what again nothing was true, yet the Good news SONY exist to bring The Best games ever made¡¡¡
Amd congratulated insomniac and confirmed ps5 has rdna 2
Sony has the games right now, this looks amazing. Xbox can have the more powerful console, but unless it has exclusives like this it really doesn't mean much. Unfortunately Halo is not the game to show off what it can do either. I'm sure the game will be fine but it's no graphical banger at all.
Xbox has the hardware, has the studios, but no amazing games yet. They better not take too long or Sony is gonna run away with the lead again
It is a downgrade but it still looks good.
Isomniac are an incredible studio.
@@willjohnboy no they didn't lol
@@glenmcl yes they did, check Twitter
I'm glad you both straight up said which mode you think is best :) I think thats what most people wanna hear xD
You ability to resolve detail is what matters, the quality mode might look great in stills but in motion its a blur. At 60 you will be able to resolve more of the scene while moving which is actually what counts. Looks amazing for what is nearly a launch title.
I think sony should focus their game to run 1440 with RT 60 fps or 4k 60fps on gameplay
And apply 4k RT 30 fps on cutscenes
True, no ressources should be put into a 30fps mode in 2021. 60fps should be target
4K isn’t even native it’s typically 1440p upscaled to 4K on the vast majority of games on both new consoles.
@@vandammage1747 nope. Options are good. More modes= better. Less modes =worse.
@@ZackSNetwork It's Native most of the time in this game when the mode is enabled.
Those fixed resolution targets are irrelevant when we are in the age of image reconstruction methods like Insomniac's temporal injection anti-aliasing technology.
One of the best games that money can buy.
Quality AAAA.
Insomniac’s 60 frames RT modes with up scaling are so wonderful for a console gamer like myself. Great coverage as usual DF.
Thanks! I really like the idea of Digital Foundry choosing the best graphics option.
