While the removable disc drive might over complicate the product line, it's cool that years down the line, there will be plenty of easily replaceable, first-party OEM parts if the disc drives start failing. You just buy a new drive and pop it in. No screws, no ribbon cables. Pretty neat. *Edit* I know that the drive requires internet connection. My hope is that Sony uses software patches to allow people to replace them. The online connectivity is a piracy measure that Sony had to implement because of regulations. Every console made after 2005 will eventually be e-waste when they shut down their servers, but it will be a long time before the PS5 reaches that point.
if they're new, yeah but i think if you want to buy used it wouldn't work right? cause you have to register to your ps5 and all and i say buy used because sony won't be making these forever and you might want to fix your ps5 at a time where it's either too expensive to buy new or literally impossible
@@L0tsen we're still in the early stages of CD/DVD ODE's which have lack security compared to bluray, give it 20 years and maybe there would might be one
I don't think it would over complicate the product line at all. They now only have to make one console and add the disk drive for the drive version which easily connects in.
18:47 It's worth noting that the PS3 had it's first node shrink from 90nm to 65nm during the FAT model then the 65nm to 40nm happened within the slim's cycle, so a node shrink never happened in the transition from Fat->Slim or Slim->Super Slim and the PS2 had multiple node shrinks in it's FAT model phase as well.
@@reviewforthetube6485 yup, just making a note of it because they (LTT or Linus himself, in this case) say it like a node shrink was SUPPOSED to happen in the transition to the slim when that's never been the case historically.

@trevoreggleston5815 no cause atleast those have indicators and/or different colors or symbols where the ps5 only had a stick button and a longer stick button
It's understandable that the chip didn't shrink anymore, unlike the last time a slim model came out there are many more companies buying up all the latest processing nodes. It's unfortunate but seems to be where we are heading.
It makes sense from a margins perspective. Why go through the hassle of porting the design to a better process node when the current one is fine and costs less per chip.
I must say that Linus nailed it when he was talking about the power and reset for eject button being nearby each other. I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally ejected to this or accidentally put it in sleep mode. This is a major big welcome in my opinion that will probably get overlooked, but I'm glad that line is called it out. And I must say that overall the system looks a little bit more appealing to me being smaller. I'm probably going to wait off on the pro model, assuming that happens. But it's hard to argue that they made the right decisions when it comes to the design on this thing.
LMAO i dont think any thought it was worth the effort for something that wasnt a new game. and hey, its not like everyone watching console videos have a console. TBF, i wouldnt be watching yt videos about consoles if i had a console. i'd be playing instead.
I built my first PC in 2020 and it was only then that I realised how stable consoles are with relatively limited hardware. The fact you can boot up RDR2 or GOW on a PS4 and never once worry about frame rate (even if it is capped at 30) is bloody impressive.
I don't get it. Sorry. You can framelock your PC to 30 (I dunno why you would) and expect a far more stable experience provided that the games on the console and the PC are both purchased and not cracked. I never noticed a drop below mid 60s even with everything maxed out.
@@RR-ho3td More that when you look at the objective specs of a basic gaming PC and the console hardware, it's amazing they can run modren games at all never mind how stable they are.
It's because it uses fake frames for higher fps. It's not powerful enough to do more than 30fps at native. It's well optimized because it should be it's only one hardware that the developers need to worry about lol. But I personally can never go back to 30 frames. That shit give me headaches
Thanks for showing the teardown! Im a small technician and we may have a slight influx of these coming in throughout the years so getting this knowledge is pretty handy
It was actually a pretty straightforward teardown - I'd rate it 6.5/10 for reparability. The screw under the sticker was annoying, but the heat gun pulled it off really easily. The different screw sizes/pitches was also a bit annoying, but a magnetic workspace pad kept track of them fine.
I really appreciate that they made the console smaller, although for my setup it doesn't really make a difference. Had no difficulty adding the PS5 to my desk and I love the look with a matte black dbrand skin in the middle and the red face plates. I do really appreciate the work they have done on the slim model, although I am perfectly happy to stick with my launch-day PS5 that is still running great.
I had a launch day PS5 as well that bricked after about a week of use 😂 Sony gave a new one and I’ve had it since. See no reason to get the slim currently but i have no doubts it’s worth it. I doubt I’ll get another ps5 unless a pro is somehow announced.
@@sebrothering1274 Yeah, there is a chance I may go for the Pro too if that’s released, although I am currently quite happy with how it’s running games. I know it only runs Alan Wake 2 at around medium settings but the game still runs pretty well and looks great in my opinion. Not to mention if I were to game on a PC I would probably own one that gets about the same performance anyways.
I believe the half gloss look was intentionally meant to mirror the look of the original launch ps4 (before they revised it to be fully matte and later released the ps4 slim which was also fully matte)
Good thing that the mainboard and heatshield and sinks dont have to be separeted like ever... the liquid metal makes it perform good over time and dust only accumulates outside on the fins this is good for maintenence imo
Unfortunately it looks like they're still going to need regular maintenance, and often. I kind of wish Sony inferred with their designs that you should lay the console down flat. At least once a week I have to service a PS5 due to overheating, most of the time the top half (area that has less conductive material and more heat when standing upright) of the chip is covered in oxidation and is effectively repelling all that liquid metal off of the mating surface.
@@VellahTV Also, while not an Issue for now, the other Thermal Pads (or whatever its called) for VRAM, NAND... other Chips might dry out over Time as well. As an EE who designs PCBs this thing is a work of art. Much of the time we are limited by thermal constraints and have various methods of dealing with it, though always at a cost. The giant custom stamped clamshell as a shared heat sink and EMI shield is a great low cost and super effective solution that is surgically effective, kudos Sony!

It was definitely shrunk somewhat, but there is no way the total volume shrink percent is anywhere remotely close to the shrink Sony managed with either the PS2 Slim or the PS3 Slim. Those were both massive reductions in size and volume compared to their full fat launch models. You could probably stack three PS2 Slims on top of each other and it would be thinner than the launch model.
Yeah I think a lot of that comes down to the advances made during those time periods in component sizes. The gains are a lot more incremental when it comes to physical size these days it seems.
You forget that there was a PS2 chipset included inside the original PS3 for backwards compatibility. Remove that and supporting hardware and there's a lot of space to make it smaller
You forget that almost half of the volume of the original PS2 was for a 3.5 inch standard HDD expansion that was almost never used. The PS2 could have been half the size at launch if not for the HDD drive bay.

The acoustic measurements on the plane were nice (I would recommend a tinnier angular spacing to make the graph less choppy). However, because sound can be emitted in all directions, this result doesn't mean that the total acoustic energy radiated by both devices is the same. I amazed at the short term memory of so many people who forget that for years the PS5 was sold way above MSRP. And people actually paid those scalper prices. My cousin paid 800€ for his PS5. The new MSRP Sony revealed is the exact same price the original PS5 is being sold at the moment in stores here, ignoring special sales, which the slim should also have. What`s hilarious is how people who already own a PS5 are getting upset about this.
@@maythesciencebewithyou yup, and I'm surprised they're releasing a bundle that comes with MW3 free. Imo they could have charged $50 more for that bundle and it would still sell well.
Honestly, everything here is pretty much what I expected. Given that the price of the console hasn't really gone down I figured that it would at its core still be utilizing the same chip. So my feelings about it are exactly as they were when I first heard about it which is that if you already have a PS5 like myself then there's no reason to upgrade BUT if you don't yet have a PS5 and are in the market for one then there's no reason NOT to get this slimmer model as it's small, has an extra USB port, and a bit more storage while utilizing the same amount of power for identical performance. Also, unless you come across a sale on the all digital model I am still of the opinion that you should go for the disk-based version despite now being able to upgrade to a disk in the future because the price difference between the two is negligible for the added benefit of being able to pick up physical discs that often go on sale from retailers way below their price on the PlayStation store.
You do realise how big even the slim version is it’s bigger than even the ps4 pro and Xbox consoles . Clearly they need the space and with their first console they didn’t make it large on purpose. Also do you really think they’ve been doing this since the ps1 on purpose lol
6:00 Regarding the USB ports, Sony's own site says the original/launch PS5 has three 10Gbps ports (1x USB-C on the front and 2x USB-A on the back) and the front USB-A port is "High Speed" USB (they don't specify the speed but "High Speed" refers to USB 2 or 480Mbps) and not two 5Gbps and two 10Gbps as mentioned in the video. The only change the Slim brings in regards to the USB ports is the front USB ports are now both USB-C with one being a 10Gbps port and the other a "High Speed" port according to Sony. This means that the USB ports are all the same speed as the original PS5 but the only difference is the USB-A port on the front has been replaced by a USB-C port at the same speed.
No thermals testing? Having same power draw in a smaller case could go either way, so seems like testing that would have been a huge deal to see if there are hot spots that could cause issues.
Sounds like a job for GamersNexus with their thermal probe setup. (Consoles are notoriously hard to do proper thermal testing for, as none of the temperatures are exposed to the user in any way and you basically have to take the whole thing apart, place thermal probes while not ruining the original thermal material and then put it back together and stress test it.)
Im pretty sure there are not gonna be that much difference because the heatsink looks exactly the same as the cfi 1200 og model and that has the same node and the same power consumption im pretty sure the smaller case wont do much
Consoles aren't that hard, if you have the right tools. At least some aren't, i got to do a little beta testing on one that had access to dev tools and it included a massive array of temperature data. So some console manufacturers actually care enough to put a lot of temp sensors across a lot of nodes, just a matter of if external testing groups can get access to the software. Kind of like how PCs can have a lot more nodes than you realize, like using some apps that pull up a dozen different temps that apparently are built in, but without access unless you download the right programs to access it all (or, i think some might have access through BIOS but that's not particularly useful for stress testing)
Love the video. And the find about "background" games putting the new console in a state that draws so much power was super interesting and good to know! Thanks!
Wasn't the original PS5 heavily marketed around its custom 6 channel Storage Controller? Which was also the reason for its weird 825GB capacity. I only see 4 Packages now, 256GB each for 1TB in total, which means it is using less channels from the controller, which implies that parallel throughput of the system would be lower unless the controller is more efficient now per channel of NAND connected to it. Can you guys run a Speed Test on the Internal Storage to see if there's any different?
Heavily marketed? Depends. That was a small detail in the Road to PS5, barely a marketed feature. It was just a single part of its specs and probably not that important. Most of the custom stuff is on the actual controller, like hardware decompression. And I imagine there’s still the 6 levels of priority they mentioned. Oh, and the PS5 actually has a 12 channel interface, not 6, although I’m not sure how that translates to the nand chips
The number of channels doesn't necessarily equal the number of NAND packages or dies within, and less chips also doesn't necessarily mean a decrease in channels. For reference modern drives commonly have 8 channels while using 2 NAND packages, so Sony could very well keep 12 channels (it's 12 not 6) despite decreasing down to 4 packages in the Slim which likely each have four 512 Gbit dies. Also fewer channels wouldn't necessarily mean lower throughput, the speed of the channels matters.
Funnily enough, this is a game changer for me. The original model was too big to fit in the niche of my rack, and my wife didn't want it sitting on top of it. I agree it would look strange with the over the top design. But the slim version will fit nicely, and if I decide to get the dark plates, it will be even more wife friendly lol
19:17 probably due to shortages and price at the time 5nm wouldnt be any cheaper for them to make, we would only get power savings as actual users, I wouldn't be shocked to see a 5nm revision of this in another year or so like they did with the base PS5 getting two revisions since launch to reduce the heatsink and then the 6nm+further heatshrink reduction once price comes down more.
nah if we get another revision, itll be an ACTUAL slim model. Note how Sony doesnt explicitly brand this with the word "slim". It's only replacing the old fat ps5 once supplies run out. It's the new standard.
I feel like they wouldn't changed it into 5nm chip because the 6nm chip was originally from the Slim but they tried it to the Ps5 which makes the 1200 series one
1:31 “Non-revised. Dual sense controller“ This statement is incorrect. There are two versions of the controller. If your serial number ends in -1 you have the original dual sense controller. If it ends in -A, you have the updated internals less prone to stick drift. The slim are shipping with a mix of both versions, my slim digital came with the new version. If you get the -1 by chance, you may want to think about returning the console and trying again for the newer controller. hope this helps.

I actually love the "collar look" of the original PS5 and I hate that DBrand decided to drop that. Do they have designs that have the extra air vents but keep the collar?
On the USB ports, Linus actually is a bit wrong - it's actually the same speeds on all ports as the previous OG PS5, they've just changed the front USB-A to USB-C. - Both back USB-A ports are 10 Gbit. - One of the front USB-C - the one replacing the USB-A - is limited to USB 2.0 speeds (480 Mbit/s) and is basically only for charging controllers/peripherals. (I guess you can use it for USB headsets as well as those typically only need USB 2.0 speeds.) - The other USB-C is 10 Gbit and is to be used for the PSVR2 (but can be used for charging etc. as well, of course). It could cause some confusion if new users try to plug their PSVR2 into the wrong front port and it doesn't work and don't understand why.
I doubt it's been downgraded to usb 2.0, more likely it's 3.0 instead of 3.1 like the other ports which would be the same as the OG PS5. 3 x 3.1, 1 x 3.0
One thing they could've changed is make the OS SSD not be soldered. In case one chip module is to fail it would be much easier to replace an SSD and not to desolder and resolder the chip back on the board, well at least Xbox got that right.
Wish D-brand would make some plate covers that would give the console more symmetrical and use the extras space between the console itself and the covers for more ventilation (also I think with a more symmetrical plates the ps5 can look a lot better)

However, in long run, this console is not good for future retrogaming because Sony will shutdown their cloud service long before all the optical drives fail. As a result, you cannot combine a working drive with a working motherboard because Sony maintained cloud service is required to accomplish that. Hopefully none of the games for this console are worth retrogaming in the future.
@@MikkoRantalainen While not ideal unfortunately it's now the world we live in, still with luck unless I'm misunderstanding something, there is a fair chance that once that point is reached either Sony changes the firmware so that the online requirement is no longer needed or 3rd party solutions are available to cater for those users.

While the removable disc drive might over complicate the product line, it's cool that years down the line, there will be plenty of easily replaceable, first-party OEM parts if the disc drives start failing. You just buy a new drive and pop it in. No screws, no ribbon cables. Pretty neat.
*Edit*
I know that the drive requires internet connection. My hope is that Sony uses software patches to allow people to replace them. The online connectivity is a piracy measure that Sony had to implement because of regulations. Every console made after 2005 will eventually be e-waste when they shut down their servers, but it will be a long time before the PS5 reaches that point.

Regarding the USB ports, Sony's own site says the original/launch PS5 has three 10Gbps ports (1x USB-C on the front and 2x USB-A on the back) and the front USB-A port is "High Speed" USB (they don't specify the speed but "High Speed" refers to USB 2 or 480Mbps) and not two 5Gbps and two 10Gbps as mentioned in the video.

Probably that's why LTT didn't provide this data.

They lie in marketing a lot
They probably use faster NAND now.

They have no reason to update performance now as they want to sell you the Pro models later.
@@companyoflosersthey never branded any playstation as slim.
They actually did the 6nm shrink from 7nm a while back because it was cheaper to switch then it was to keep on 7nm
Linus that’s the entire game not just an operator pack! 😂
Lol someone redeemed it real fast
and he threw away the stand saying it wasnt a stand.
@@WayStedYoubecause how would you know those 2 small plastic pieces are supposed to be stands? Makes sense why linus thought it was plastic pieces sent by dbrand...
@@-BarathKumarSWell, Dave 2D immediately figured out what they were for in his teardown.
5:48 pull out what!!!!!!💀😭😭😭😭
Really looking forward to picking this up.
Already looks easier than the PS4 slim to clean the internals.
Don’t. The NVME drive will probably get fried in a year. It’s right next to heat sink.
@@rohitk8797it wont lol
@@XxNoMercyNLI hope you’re correct I just ordered mine today!
Just got the Slim. its my first PS5. pretty happy with it so far. one thing though. YOU CANT DELETE INDIVIDUAL SAVES ON THE CONSOLE. you have to hope the game has the option to delete save slots within it. otherwise, you overwrite existing data or DELETE ALL THE SAVE DATA. I have no idea why this is missing. kind of makes me rethink my choice.
This applies to the OG as well, not just rhe slim
I actually love the "collar look" of the original PS5 and I hate that DBrand decided to drop that. Do they have designs that have the extra air vents but keep the collar?
100% agree, Looks horrible with the rounded edges I'm just going to wait for Sonys official side plates
(I guess you can use it for USB headsets as well as those typically only need USB 2.0 speeds.)
- The other USB-C is 10 Gbit and is to be used for the PSVR2 (but can be used for charging etc. as well, of course).
It could cause some confusion if new users try to plug their PSVR2 into the wrong front port and it doesn't work and don't understand why.
I doubt it's been downgraded to usb 2.0, more likely it's 3.0 instead of 3.1 like the other ports which would be the same as the OG PS5. 3 x 3.1, 1 x 3.0
so hes right as he said 3 of them are 10......
@@talibong9518 They didn’t downgrade any ports. The front USB-A is USB 2.0 on the OG PS5 and they just swapped it for a USB-C at the same speed.
He was also wrong about using cheap flash memory when it uses nvme m.2 when talking about the storage
@@Brandon0159Nvme is already pretty cheap.
One thing they could've changed is make the OS SSD not be soldered. In case one chip module is to fail it would be much easier to replace an SSD and not to desolder and resolder the chip back on the board, well at least Xbox got that right.
As an Xbox user I like what PlayStation is doing with all the upgradability.
Wish D-brand would make some plate covers that would give the console more symmetrical and use the extras space between the console itself and the covers for more ventilation (also I think with a more symmetrical plates the ps5 can look a lot better)
Yeah I was thinking like a "throwback jersey" type of thing. Make it look like a PS2. #MakePS5RectangleAgain.
I absolutely love the look of the original disc based PS5 but this looks pretty nice as a space saver. I sold my original PS5 last year when I lost my job so I may look into getting the Slim. Was hoping the Pro would come out soon but I'm guessing it's gonna be a while lol
Next year
Pretty sure the pro will be out next year at this same time the thing is i just hope they dont do an upgrade like the ps4 pro and they go for the one x rpute becausr for me the ps4 pro was a dumb buy for me the upgrades where too little to justify the price and if they ps5 pro follow that trend i will expected to cost 600 usd so i hope it gives a nice boost and not just some clock speeds and thats it
I'm not a PS fan nor have I had a console since I got the XBOX One S (when they lowered the price)....but are they even making a PS5 Pro? Most seemed to think the rumors of this console, before they announced it was a slim, was going to be the "Pro". Austin usually is all over the rumors and conspiracy stuff with the various consoles, and I don't remember him saying he had seen a Pro legit rumor out there...but maybe I wasn't paying attention
Rumor got it coming out next year.
Why did you sell it though? Jobs suck man. Should have kept the ps5 lol.
I love dbrand the marketing they have is top tier and hilarious and if you’ve seen their twitter then them sending this PS5 slim with no explanation of how they got their hands on it makes complete sense 😂😂
I am still happy you pulled Riley onto the team. he's awesome
I like how easy seems to be replacing fan or psu (and disc drive obviously).
@@MikkoRantalainen Oof, yeah, I forgot about 'live-service' thingy... well... shit
Then again, determined people always(?) finds a way
@@raka1996 If Sony went the here with the same technique they use in their Android phones, real cryptography with secret device specific key stored in TPM (or equivalent) chip, there's little to no hope to ever fix the problem without Sony's help.
For a single device, you could put the TPM chip under electron microscope to extract the device specific secret but that scales really poorly.
You'll end up with similar crap that 3rd party repair services have to deal with Apple devices nowadays: swap individual chips to avoid the serial numbers from changing. This obviously totally voids the idea of easy drive replacement.
And considering how poorly they support their existing Android hardware, I have very little hope for Sony ever releasing a firmware update to allow part swaps when Sony shuts down the cloud service.
other than the amount of screws for the cooling, this doesn't look too bad repair wise. wow
Have they adressed two of the issues the original ps5 had. 1. The coil whine from the psu. 2. Have they changed the HDMI controller to support full 4.4.4 rather than the 4.2.2?
New ps5's still crash playing ps5 games when using sleep mode and HDMI link.
Nope it has the exact same HDMI controller. As far as coil whine goes it depends on the PS5.
@@ZackSNetwork yeah i use ps5 on my desk top and never heard a thing.
imagine the upcoming next gen consoles share some PC characteristics ( they will come pre built, but the side is exposed and you can install rgb rams and ssd xD )
The ssd thing has been done before. *With the ps3.* At least with the super slim ps3, you could slide its side off and you had a completely empty full PC HDD sized sata port, no need for screws even
I used that with an sata extention cable, powering an big HDD instead of the smaller laptop drive they came with. Even modded an old external case to keep the drive in, for safety.
I do remember it had a sizelimit though, but it also could've been an incompatibility with the drive brand, somehow.
@@Icefumy I had like a 240G corsair sata ssd from back in the day, which was a huge upgrade from the I think 16 or 32G my PS came with, I think it was one of those models with flash storage
I wonder if the price/power reduction of 6nm -> 5nm just wasn't worth it for the console space for this refresh. Like with all the previous refreshes it was a huge change in die size but we're really approaching the edge of what can be affordably made and shoved into a small package that will appeal to the console market.
Law of diminishing returns
node advancements take longer and more expensive to make. its crazy how if people just think they too can understand the design decisions companies make. decisions aren't arbitrary they all have cost benefit analysis behind them.
@@armanromana1580 Yeah people can be dumbasses ,especially memes out there mocking the ps5 slim although Sony never called it Slim in the first place more like "refresh"
@@pauloazuela8488exactly, it doesn't say slim anywhere on the box.
I have a PS 1 and PS 2, and I do have to say that sony has always given us options to expand our storage, especially on the PS2 with the HDD slot in the back.
Apples and Oranges.
Lol you say this but if they could force cloud or digital only they would
@@krustyegirl7334 they could but they didn't. there's speculation and reality.
@@krustyegirl7334 There's definitely benefits to both. And you have the options. We're talking Storage, not a disc drive.
@@krustyegirl7334 they absolutely could just not produce a disk drive.
I wish they still included an optical digital audio cable connection, some of us actually need that for our surround system.
7:10 NO! there wasn't wide-spread stories of PS5s overheating. wtf are you saying? The only stories of overheating was due to "dry spots" from the liquid metal from storing the console vertical. (I have a launch system that has vertical for years and never overheated). Guess it's just bad luck of the few others.
Linus never said “wide spread issues of the PS5 overheating” as you put it. He only said “remember how these things were overheating?” Meaning he’s acknowledging those who have had the original launch PS5 overheat but he never said it was wide spread.
It's seriously cool they can pack that much in such a "small" package. I mean honestly with the size of modern consoles you might as well get a mini itx build, but those are more expensive if you spec them up. So it's fair enough. The "you need connection to the server or it's a brick" trend worries me though =l
You should see an Xbox series x tear down. Talk about power, size ratio
It's as powerful as an rtx 3060, you can find 4090 laptops smaller than that
@@nightthemoon8481 can’t find one no where near as cheap tho. And GPUs on laptops are weaker than desktops.
@@Amearie true, but it's cheaper in the long term since you're not paying for online and paying 80$ for every game
Some laptop gpus are weaker but not all, the 4060 laptop is almost identical to its desktop counterpart, the 4090 however is much weaker than its desktop equivalent but still more than 4x as powerful as the ps5
@@nightthemoon8481but is also subjective if you only play triple A games you wont see a difference in price since on pc they cost the same and if you only play multiplayer free to play games then you dont need the suscription service so yeah it really depends on my use case i have my pc but the ps5 has better performance most of the time in newer games (specially with pc ports lately) and i dont see advantages on price because i only play triple A games and i pay the plus on my ps5 for the game catalog and cost the same as paying the yearly amount for gamepass on the pc so its basically the same for me hahaha

The slim digital has the ability to add a disc drive in the future. wondering if that means i could remove the disc tray from a non digital slim, and turn it into a digital, then get a flat face plate for where the disc tray was. reattach the disc tray if i want to play a game
