- Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at the leaks regarding Google's search algorithm, while many have been blowing it up it's best to discuss just what's really relevant and how it all ties into the behemoth that is the best kept Internet secret. Thanks for watching!

Man, I miss the days when Google was just a search engine and not the unelected gatekeeper of the Internet.
yeah too big, who put these bean counters like sundar pitchAI in charge of the web.
It's made it pretty hard to research or expose fringe organizations.
Exactly. I’m waiting for the class action suits to start. They own a monopoly and can tank someone’s business on a whim. Crazy.
Google hasn’t been good since the late 90s and early 2000s with their search engine, when exploring the internet actually had people surfing from site to site prior to social media. Now everything is conveniently located on a few select sites to keep you contained to generate them more clicks and advertisers. You don’t need to browse the rest of the internet … it’s just too dangerous. 😏 Stick to these sites we are partnered with for advertising, so much safer!
jfc I can’t even post a comment anymore and have it show instantly without it being removed or going through a period of approval via the Google gods.
All I did was comment about the last time Google was good … pushing 2-3 decades ago.
Anyone else having this issue? You post a comment, and nothing changes - not the comment count, nothing. It’s like because my account has been around for so many years with a plethora of reports against it, it automatically gets flagged and my comments are held (or never posted like now - going back and forth between New and Top comments to refresh things, but checking the ones I reply to … count never changes and it’s like my comment disappeared into the ether). I’ll be surprised if this one also posts, even if I edit it (which will show on my end as being there, but once I leave the comment section I am replying to … it disappears completely). Becoming a problem with discussions anymore as I really don’t want to abandon this account. I shouldn’t have to… just like how I shouldn’t have to select all and copy every single thing I post just in case.
Yet another example on how Google taints its products and monopolizes things. NO DISSENT.
The algorithm:
for website in websites:
if website['is_sponsored']:
send_to_top(website)
else:
bury_at_bottom(website)
This is why Bing is better nowadays. Not to mention Bing rewards and Copilot.

Indeed. They literally do this on a semi regular basis at this point.
Maybe it's just 1 or a handful of people doing this.
Or it's a collective brain fart.
Fake leak is a good strategy against justice implications.
it was leaked to Github, which is now owned by Microsoft. No way it was accidental, because Google definitely has their own git service and wouldn't normally use Github. It was either intentionally done by Google or by some intern.
Why would they intentially leak?

scammers already messed up the search engine, the ads are sometimes malicious, especially on youtube.
Sometimes? For me it's either 1000th iteration of the *Hero Wars* ad that is nearly indistinguishable from its other instances or "get rich quick" -scheme- scam . You can't find anything of value through the ads anymore.
Yeah true
Hey I'm Mr. BEAST!! Google is a scammer so that checks out.
The ones I hate are the "if you're over 65 you can get free cash every month! Act now, this offer will end tomorrow!!" (and of course it's the same ad that's been playing for years) or "this beer can and candle space heater is taking the world by storm - invented by a NASA scientist, it will save you thousands of dollars on your winter heating bills every year!"
Luckily there's ways to manipulate the ads so that they're at least about things you're interested in - for instance, they're welcome to send me ads on scientific instrumentation anytime....
I just wanna search thru weird shit and randomness like early 2000’s. Wish there was a way. But money really did ruin the internet.

This leak might not be a massive expose for Google, but it surely sheds some light on what goes into making our search experiences personalized and relevant.

Now google's going to get even worse as the SEO garbage adapts to the algorithm and pushes valuable results down. :(
I think it’ll make it better. It’s gonna force them to update it
Time for people to start changing their search engines.
The fact that you can pay to get your results on the face of people that don't want it was already bad.
Who like SEO ?
It hasn't been providing relevant results to my queries for years at this point.
The change has been gradual, but it got noticeably worse between 5 or so years ago and now.
_Now!?_
It's _been_ getting worse since the late 2000s. Google is largely useless now for any serious searching, and their image search has been neutered beyond belief. Bing at least lets you click to bring up an image directly. Google used to do that, but now it just links to the site instead. Can't find images by exact size anymore either. Search parameters are increasingly useless. Yandex works great for reverse image searching. Mojeek is the closest I've seen that replicates the vibe of mid 2000s search results. You can actually *browse* the web instead of getting results from the same 5 websites you don't want to visit. Crazy idea, I know.
Honestly really pumped about this. Think about the alternatives that could pop up to create competition by offering superior services
Yes! I’m sick of biased google
To offer a superior service all they need to do is what Google was doing a decade ago. No political bullshit, or hiding of one sides views and policing of opinions.
You’re way too hopeful.
So like Neeva?

"It's not in Google's interest to manipulate the search engine results"
You mean like they have done during presidential elections or COVID? Yeah, of course they wouldn't.
Google's autocomplete predictions creeps me out and it feels like it reads my mind what I'm about to search! I know that it may based on the things you just did on the internet like you look at a recipe and sees a fruit you are unfamiliar with and about to search for it on another tab and you only wrote "what is" and it immediately suggests that fruit in question! But it does this too when I just think about something I didn't even do recently on the internet some months ago and haven't search for anything like that!
There was some cases I forgot exactly the details but I was suddenly thinking about one random question that isn't even common about something specific I read or watched some months ago. When I just only wrote "Why" with only one or few letters more and Google immediately predicts that one exact question I just had! Although sometimes even if the autocomplete predictions are creepily accurate what I'm thinking, the actual search results may just still as frustratedly inaccurate and incoherent as usual.
Look next to "images", "shopping" etc for the three dots, and select "Web". This disables a good bunch of the stuff added on to the normal search engine like AI, 1984-style policing of opinions and views, and just returns the regular search engine responses.
Just talk about a subject you have never looked at online, such as birds. Talk about budgies or parrots for a while when near your phone, the next day talk about budgies again, about buying one, about needing a bird cage or other accessories.... and within a day or two you will start seeing ads for pet stores, sales on bird cages etc.
This works with every subject I've picked and talked about to test this theory, just have your phone nearby, maybe unlock it and scroll thru Google News while you do. Just don't type in the subject you're talking about to make sure the only influence is spoken words when near your phone.
It's the proof that Google is listening when they should not be.
The voice activated "OK Google" search bar on android phones is always listening, it has to in order to detect that you said "OK Google" to activate it to listen for whatever you are asking it to do, such as send a text or search the web.
You can also find a transcript of everything you've said to Google, it is somewhere in your Google profile/history...
...along with a record of everywhere you've been, and what day/time you were there, if you have "location" setting turned on. This is why police want your phone when arrested, it can place you at the scene of the crime, resulting in convictions for those that take their phone with them when committing crimes...
Maaaan, i wish my girlfriend was like that...😂😭🤣
So well summed up.
I feel this too much... They read your mind like "you wanted this didn't you?" Then be like "No! You'll see this instead"
Nothing to be paranoid about

Google sucks for finding anything nowadays, I rather use a search engine that doesn't skew results in favor of only one set of views.
Google is beyond worthless.
I am a tattoo artist that had moved from a 99% white country to pretty diverse country and i googled the differences of tattooing dark skin compared to white skin and google instead of giving me actual useful information, so i can give my clients the best service possible, gave me bunch of filtered out BS articles about how tattooing i’m racist for even considering that we are not completely equal and identital to an atomic level. Searched the same thing on Brave browser or duckduckgo and of course there’s differences.. so they would rather hide information that could impact someones health, than god forbid offend someone
now you try looking for a meme and it tells you "memes make fun of people and are hurful don't do that"
Google has always sucked.
I usually have to use 2-3 search engines to look stuff up and see how each search engine skews it now.
While I agree it is important it remain secret, it's no doubt there is manipulation with searches and some entries in the leak are concerning about that.
There is no doubt, because they've testified before congress that they intentionally manipulate their algorithms as they see fit. It takes 10 seconds researching who Alphabet donates to, to see for whom and why they do this.
An algorithm that only works so long as it remains secret is inherently brittle.

My thought is that the version of the API that is detailed in the leak is not a full, exact copy of what Google has implemented on their live services. It could very well be a generaic template that models "well enough" the functionality of Google's API and engine, in enough detail to design new modules or change some functionality. After all, it was leaked to github, which is something likely to happen if it was being kept alongside an ongoing project, either for reference or to be actively worked on and then compared to the inital template. This would be one way to present a fully fleshed out change or addition, without having to worry about being perfectly faithful to the (probably vastly more complicated) live version behind Google's live services, which probably go through many small changes quite frequently. This might be how they review any proposed changes or additions to the ranking algorithm. Sort of like how you might have a pseudocode breakdown of a process you have yet to implement, except in this case Google just keeps a "reasonable facsimile" of their core functionality which serves as good enough of a model to test new ideas with.
I've been having that ear issue too. I had to lower the volume on literally everything I do.

Great Data, Very interesting, Great Delivery Bro lv ya, Peace out!
Hey Muta, there's an irrevocable Apache 2.0 license on that code, so you can share it freely if you like. It's part of the folklore now.
Two things that came out of it I was hoping to hear you say are that 1) Google is using click data from its browser to spy (to some degree) on its users in order to deliver better ranking in its search product, and 2) Google has misled the community of website builders deliberately about a number of things.
The intended result of #2 was to throw people off from gaming its algorithm, but what seems to have happened instead is that people especially concerned with marketing and spam deduced ways to game Google anyway, whereas those who followed Google's advice to "just make great content" ended up ranking low or not at all.
Another thing that came out of it is that Google hand-picks websites for black, and white lists and that the size of the organization that runs a website matters a lot. That means that if you have been blessed with Google's internal bias, you will rank for anything you want, even if it's far and away from your expertise. This is why CNN (and so many others) run review sites about products that have nothing to do with journalism.
