Leslie Nielsen was known as a serious dramatic actor until around Airplane! Interesting point about the glass in ancient Japan / China. Glass was a european invention, and even though the Japanese / Chinese had older civilizations, and innovations of their own, their lack of knowledge of glass is what held them back. Glass is the reason Europeans sailed the world, it allowed them to make telescopes, compasses, windows, microscopes, prisms, etc. which lead to scientific, and medical discoveries as well as being able to explore. Had the asians figured out glass before the europeans, the world would look very different today.
If I recall there was a fleet of Japanese ships that were set to sail east until they were torched. Japan would've discovered the Americas long before Colombus.
Prior to "Police Squad" and "The Naked Gun", Leslie Nielsen was mostly known for dramatic roles. I mean, he was in "Prom Night", "Creepshow", and Disney's American Revolution drama "The Swamp Fox".

I mentioned in the comments of your Red Sonja review that Ernie Reyes Jr. had a Gofundme going to pay for his kidney transplant surgery. The good news on that front is that the goal has since been met.

Leslie Nielson was in the first Creepshow movie - not a particularly serious movie, but it was a non-comedic role.
