Do you actually think Hollywood would ever cast 40 something year old actor to play a high school teen in movies or television? Even parodies and satires of those types of flicks would rather have someone who is either as young as 18 or as old as 29 or 30.

Honestly the main character "i cant even walk in a hallway" joke could have actually worked had he gone to Australia. Because we drive on the left down here, we also keep to the left while walking and riding escalators etc. I actually collided with some people when I went to California just because its so subtle a change yet so completely engrained in your mind that you don't think to change where you're walking until there's someone practically on top of you.

An environment he is more accustomed to? Er no. Australia differs greatly from the US. The difference would be much greater than that between any parts of the US. Not to mention that the school systems are wildly different. As someone who has moved schools repeatedly, including across countries, there is a good reason many families leave kids behind for short term relocations. Your education would be extremely disrupted. You will miss a lot, and struggle with following along in class as they have learned things you haven't. For 6 months that can easily be argued to not be worth it. He is not a very young child. He can handle being with relatives for a bit. It would be a complete waste of the year academically, and take work to get him caught up for the next year (a problem at his stage of schooling), and he would find the culture shock much greater. Many families leave their kids in boarding schools or with relatives in these situations. They are not abandoning them. To suggest so is a slap in the face to them, and those who actually do get abandoned. They make a call that their child will do better this way. There are pros and cons on both sides. They weigh them up and make a decision. I really don't think you have any understanding of the matters that come into play with such relocations.

    • @selonianth

@@DreamBelief By the logic of "He's not a very young child, he can handle being with relatives for a bit." He could also handle... I dunno... *being home alone*. The Actor was, for once, *actually* only 16 or 17 when it was filmed, so it's fairly safe to say that was his age. He can handle living alone at that point. And then you don't have to send him *anywhere*. It's not like he was shown as too irresponsible for the trust or anything. There was legitimately no reason for him to leave California if they really wanted him to stay in school.

Hold up, stop, freeze, flag on the play. His parents somehow couldn't rationalize taking him to Australia for six months on the grounds that he couldn't miss that much school, never mind that schools do exist in Australia, yet decide to dump him in Cincinnati for the same amount of time? If they didn't want to take him that's all they had to say instead of going with such a bullshit and thinly veiled excuse. But no, that'd make too much sense.

Yes, not fighting the bully is the right thing to do. But however, Mitchell is not a pacifist as he claims to be.
He's a hypocrite. He purposely provokes these people and backs down and acts superior once they want to get physical. Not to mention he pulls one of the bully's pants down to humiliate them.

When I was in school, especially high school, I was bullied mercilessly to the point where sometimes they would start fights with me because they thought I would be an easy punching bag. For better or worse I fought back when I needed to and I also had a habit of getting involved whenever other people got bullied so I can honestly say I was not smart about it like I should've been.
I've always had a strong sense of justice and still do, so I can't stand to see other people suffer, so I have an instinct of sorts to watch other people's backs, but I don't say that to sound like some kind of badass. I'm just an idiot who doesn't learn in that specific instance. I don't like violence and I prefer to handle things diplomatically, but as I look back on that time of my life I do admit that I got so tired of being treated like crap (due to a disability mind you) that I was on verge of becoming a ticking time bomb and I was always worried that I would just snap and didn't know how I would respond or what I would do.
Luckily I did find perspective, but the fact that bullies and gossip mongers made my life a living hell to the point where I almost gave into suicidal depression wasn't helped by my anger that I developed. While I never became a bully myself, I didn't realize that I was giving in to what they wanted out of me. I was close to becoming someone I probably would've disliked if I were someone on the outside looking in, and I'm not at all proud of it.
I've never thought of myself as a pacifist and had no delusions of being one, so I'm glad to say that at least I wasn't quite as bad as this kid. Standing up to bullies is a good thing, being a pacifist can be a good thing too, but not when you aren't one and refuse to recognize it. Let's face it, I was an asshole for a while in response to the bullies who had always victimized me in cruel ways I don't think I will ever forget, even though I long since forgave those that did them to me because teenagers likely don't realize how messed up and scarring things like that can be unless it happens directly to them.
My point being was that at times I was little better if not no better, but at least I knew it and was able to turn away from a much darker path. This Airborne movie kid (I don't remember the character's name as dumb of me as that may be) is just an antagonistic douche who clearly doesn't realize or doesn't care that he is as much of an ass and a bully as the rest of them, just in a different way. He is the teenage me that I could've been if I stepped that one inch over the edge that I was living on, but he never learned to admit it.
So while standing up to bullies is a good thing, it shouldn't come at the expense of your own morals that you stand for or your sense of self in regards to compromising who you truly are in a negative sense. Stand up to bullies, but don't become one like this kid or like what I almost did in my teenage years.

The Drunken Coward First off, I just have to say how amazing your username is for the context of the video and your comment, I truly laughed hard at the coincidence. While I agree with you somewhat, there's a time and a place for self defense. A punch to the head if given hard enough can kill a person, especially some teenager with the muscle mass of a tic tac. He's a brave little shit, but if that bully hit him one too many times or just didn't stop, even I'd fear for his life. But again, it was pretty badass and courageous that he did that. XD

The lore of the Devil's Backbone
Once there was a hill, in medevil times, or the 50's, same thing to the youth of today. There was a really steep, long hill. They named it the Devil's Backbone because of how unsafe and deadly it was. However, as modernization came, the Devil's Backbone was built over, and DUUUUUUUUUUUDES of all ages where saddened that their favorite suicide hill was ruined. However, legend has it Sir.Skatesalot put his own blueprints in the MAN'S plans, and made the most subtle track inside the city it'self. A map by skaters was made of the full working of the NEW Devil's Backbone. No more was it a really shallow cliff, but a full on deathtrap. Only a total 7 Bros have survived it's clutches, all else died, or committed suicide with a sword over not getting to the end. Truly a hill of legend.

He also said "It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence." He also said "A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave."
You don't have to go out of your way to pick fights, but you have to stand up for yourself. Another bit Ghandi said:
"Non-violence and cowardice are contradictory terms. Non-violence is the greatest virtue, cowardice the greatest vice. Non-violence springs from love, cowardice from hate. Non-violence always suffers, cowardice would always inflict suffering. Perfect non-violence is the highest bravery. Non-violent conduct is never demoralising, cowardice always is."
What love is Mitch showing? None. He clearly has great disdain if not hate for those bullies. When he didn't throw that hiss fit at them, he was trying to kiss their asses. He could have just ignored them. He knew that he'd be gone in a short time and if he felt they weren't worth it, he wouldn't have let it get to him, but it did. He didn't lash out physically, not because he's non-violent, but because he's a puss. That's why he tried to also ride on the seams of Ghandi's robe, to make it seem like he's got some virtuous cause when he doesn't.
Now some may bring up that Ghandi said: "You may never know what results come of your action, but if you do nothing there will be no result." with regard to my suggestion he could have just ignored the bullies. Well here's rule number one with all conflicts; Know your enemy. Bullies want to get a rise out of you, that is why they do what they do. There are only two ways to get rid of them; ignore them or stand up to them. Ignoring them will deny them the satisfaction of watching you squirm and they'll eventually get bored of it and stop. The moment you stop making it fun for them, they'll get tired of it. When you stand up to them, they may submit or back off. Especially when it comes to guys, people respect those with balls. Show no fear, do not attempt to reason with them and show them they should think twice before crossing you again. They'll only start wanting to fight if they think that you are weaker than they and if they have back up. They will not if you can convince them in some way that you are either on the same level as or stronger than they, especially if you get them alone. Do you exactly have to fight them physically? No, but again, you have to make it so they understand that bullying you is not fun because of the repercussions that come with it. You could even get your own back up like an adult. Some would say "Oh so they can taunt you for being a tattle tail and can't fight without help", well if you care about what they say, then you have bigger problems. Seriously, fuck em.
But again, from Ghandi "Oppose tyranny but never hurt the tyrant." You don't have to physically fight a bully to oppose them. Acting like you're trying to sleep with them is no opposing tyranny, it's laying on your back and begging for more punishment like some middle aged woman with a BDSM fetish after reading 50 Shades of Grey. Seriously, this kid was just ASKING to keep being bullied and mocked. You cannot reason with a bully.
And. "Where there is only a choice between cowardice and violence, I advice violence." It's just like with Martin Luther King, both he and Ghandi opposed injustice openly even though they never struck back physically or violently. They knew they couldn't regardless because of their opposition. They knew it'd hurt their cause. They didn't try to seduce their opponents.
In closing I'll leave with this from Ghandi "There was a time when people listened to me because I showed them how to give fight to the British without arms when they had no arms ... but today I am told that my nonviolence can be of no avail against the (Hindu-Muslim riots) and, therefore, people should arm themselves for self-defense."

As an Aussie I find his fantasy about Australia hilarious. The vast majority of us do not look like he imagines, and a massive proportion don't even live at the beach. If you're studying wombats (by the way, which? There is more than one species. You may as well say you're moving to Canberra to study bears, or are studying wolves) you likely won't be living in a coastal city. I just love imagining all those people coming here expecting this pervasive myth that we are all bronzed, slim and beachy types to be true and bring horrendously disappointed lol.

You also don't know much about scientific researchers in this field. They are not paid much (including those brought in from overseas). Given the years of study it is comparatively extremely poorly paid compared to other jobs with a similar amount of study.

About the 'puss out' scene, I honestly think that it takes a bigger man to walk away from a fight than engage in one. Walking away from a brawl when someone else tries to instigate one with you, in my eyes, takes a lot more balls than throwing the first punch. You're basically telling the asshole who starts on you that you're not going to sink down to his level and you don't need a punch up to prove that you are better than him. This isn't being a coward, it's being smart. A coward is someone who is so up his own arse that he brags that he can take on anyone in a fight, and when person offers him a chance to prove that, he backs out as quick as possible.

More like a life-ending experience when he gets bit by a funnel web spider that was hiding in his shoe, or by an eastern brown snake that was hiding in his bed, or steps on a stonefish that looked like a rock on the beach, or gets stung by a sea wasp floating invisibly in the water. Moral of the story: Never go to Australia because the wildlife there WILL kill you.

I think the reason he couldn't go to school in Australia is because the school year starts and ends in different months, due to the seasons being the opposite.

Honestly, Critic, you're totally in the wrong here. Our pretty-boy protagonist did the right thing by not escalating this fight, and attempting to use his words. He then called out the bully on his bad behavior, and understood he had nothing to prove, nor anything to gain, from engaging in barbaric fisticuffs.
So, yeah, props to Mitchell. He's actually a really cool guy.

    • @loneronin6813
      @loneronin6813 2 роки тому +1

As someone who grew up being bullied mercilessly for being different (due to disability) it's always better to talk things out but not back down when someone treats you badly. You can face down your bullies without resorting to violence. However, I was often attacked because my bullies thought I would make for a decent punching bag and I had to fight in self-defense, which is only one of two reasons there is to fight, the other being in defense of someone else. I've done both and I will always do the same, but to resort to violence outside of that only brings more trouble and more attention to yourself, thus bringing more bullies.
It's a dangerous road to go down, so to see Mitchell stand up without further escalation is admirable to say the least. In that scene, Jack is still looking to engage, but not in a way that makes him look like the bad guy, for lack of a better term. What I'm getting at is that he could easily just start a fight without so much as a word or warning (like what I dealt with when I was in school, especially high school and my early college years) but he is still looking to grandstand and contest. Mitchell seems to recognize that Jack isn't just looking to beat him down, but to indulge his own pride and play the tough guy in order to stroke his own ego.
Noticing this, Mitchell plays it off as cool as he can, keeping a level head. When that doesn't work, he bravely but nonviolently stands up for himself and denies Jack the confrontation that satisfies his need to grandstand. It's essentially claiming a different kind of victory. If you ask me, Nicky comes across as rather shallow if she turns Mitchell away because he isn't partaking in some show of force. I don't know if that's the reason here given the video is a review that cuts out certain parts of the scene and doesn't provide full context as a result.
If that is the reason, then Mitchell would be better off without her. Something I learned a long time ago is that if a girl expects you to fight for her (be it a literal fight or just competition with another guy for her affection) then she isn't the kind of woman worth fighting for. If someone is looking for a fight but they haven't just jumped you, don't give in and don't let them have their fun. Call them out and walk away peacefully with your head held high, knowing that you're the bigger person for it.
Although the attacks I dealt with growing up were in self-defense, there was one situation not unlike the one in this movie between Mitchell and Jack. One guy I knew always talked big to people that he wanted to fight me and that he could kill me, so one day I got off the bus at his stop instead of mine and told him that since he was always boasting about beating me up then he was welcome to do it without resistance from me. He then started saying to everyone that he wasn't going to beat up someone with a disability and then went home in shame and fear.
I don't know if he thought I was baiting him or something, but my calling him out actually got a couple of my bullies to lay off of me for a little while, although not permanently. My point in mentioning all of this is that if you can still find a way around fighting and giving in to ego or pride then you've already won.

      @AluminumFusion22 2 роки тому +1

Yeah, while the review is still funny, the Critic's views on handling conflict are pretty outdated when this came out.
Choosing to not stoop to someone's level and fight them but instead try to resolve the issue peacefully is obviously the right thing to do. I feel like maybe the reason Doug hates Mitchell so much is because he doesn't seem like a real character.

Michel actually did what was right in that part of the movie. Why would he fight? It would fix nothing. A real man only fight when he protects himself or someone else and only as a last resort. A primitive and stupid brute soloves all his problems by beating on them.
