I just LOVED this movie when it was shown on TV here in Brazil in the 90's. I was surprised when, years later, I discovered that Hutger Hauer's character was based on the popular Japanese character, the blind samurai Zatoichi, who has acted in nearly 30 films in addition to TV series.
I saw this when it came out with my father and we both loved this movie. Years later when Netflix started doing DVD mail in rentals they had around a dozen Zatoichii movie's and I rented every one they had. Zatoichii movie's were amazing even the remake that had CGI Blood was very good.
Just want to give RedEye props for spending the extra time creating that wonderful example (16:15) of how music really sets the mood of the imagery you are looking at. You make Mr Magoo super creepy!
The Stepfather and the Hitcher team up to take on the guy from Walker, Texas Ranger. What a film. So much fun. You should totally check out The Hitcher too (the original).
This is basically an attempt to do the blind swordsman, Zatoichi (a Japanese samurai film franchise of some 20 entries) here. To his credit, Rutger does a pretty good job capturing the personality and style of the character.
Yeah, Rutger Hauer's character is pretty much Zatoichi without the awkward massage skills and there's several scenes that are basically copied from that series. Like when he shaves the guy's eyebrows off and the "I live here" line when the lights go out. Kind of wonder if there was ever a plagiarism case on this movie.
I love that you covered this movie and I think I love this movie more than you did. Again I watched this when it came out and I was in my teens and it was super bad ass to us back then. Doesn't hold up as well now. But I went back and watched it a few months ago and it still holds up just cuz of Rutger Hauer. He was a legend.
3 things: 1 - As many have pointed out, Reno =/= Vegas 2 - At the beginning, you called the movie "Blind Justice." Just a slip, but it stuck out. 3 - You left out the best bit. When he's driving the van, and the other driver says "What are you, blind?!" and Nick says "Yeah. What's your excuse?" Other than that, excellent vid!
@@2muchteevee Haven't been there? Vegas is in the middle of the desert, but Reno... there must be a dozen ski lodges within an hour drive of Reno. Actually makes sense for a local bigshot.

This movie was my introduction to Rutger Hauer when I was a kid. One of my all-time favorites. Btw, you missed two things: 1. The “samurai” was Sho Kosugi, from the Cannon Films “Ninja” movies. I’m surprised that you didn’t mention that. And 2. You cut the iconic line from this movie after that eyebrow cut: “I also do….circumcision.” 🍸
Rutger Hauer; incredible talent...gone too soon. "All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain." You are not yet forgotten; as your moments live on still.
One thing's for sure: George Lucas has seen this movie, since the bearded henchman's bisection is exactly like Darth Maul's. I remember when I first saw this movie. The scene is so similar.
Redeye, you should do Dragon: A Bruce Lee story...it came out in the 90’s and was marketed as his life story...and as a kid I thought it was true....but, it isn’t, there’s like nothing historically accurate about it, would love to hear your thoughts on it
This is my second favourite movie with Rutger Hauer as the main character. I have watched this movie way too many times. This is only one of two comedies I have seen him in the other being the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie where he hams it up perfectly. Rutger was a great actor you only have to see Blade Runner to know that and he is sorely missed. it wasn't till several years after I first saw it that I found out it is based on Zatōichi a long running series of Japanese samurai movies involving aa blindman who is a master swordsman who travels about helping people that ran from 1962 - 1989 wit a TV series that ran for 5 years in the 70's. Zatōichi got a reboot in 2003 and that is a movie you have to cover it is awesome and weird as only a Japanese movie can be.
That bad guy was Randall "Tex" Cobb. He was a professional boxer that once went full distance with Prime Larry Holmes and also fought Buster Douglass and James Dokes. Randall "Tex" Cobb was also the bad guy in Coen Brothers Raising Arizona.

I love when the (fake) cop shows up at the door and even though he is in full uniform with a badge pinned to his chest he still holds up a badge in his hand to I.D. himself as if he were in plain clothes. Makes me wonder if originally the script called for him to be in plain clothes but at the last minute they got a hold of a couple of uniforms but didn't bother to change the script.
"did we switch channels in mid movie..." that got me laughing. I like comedy but I rarely laugh at the jokes. I get the them and they are hilarious it would seem to others. I am glad i did a real life lol. rare moment for me. so, thank you bro.
This is a VERY Americanized version of the Zatoichi films (the Shintato Katsu run of the character). This film was specifically remaking Zatoichi Challenged. The probably aren't very good as RedEye Review films, but I really encourage you to watch them. Awesome classic chambara films.
The ending cut of this film as a thriller....I was a huge fan of this film but cut that way; now it's Texas chainsaw massacre level. If you don't know anything about this film and just see that, changes everything. Great work
My friends and I watched this ALL the time in college when it first hit video. Love the fake trailer you made at the end making it much more like Hauer in The Hitcher lol. BTW did you know this director went on to direct Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger? ;-)
