Thank you for this short video history. I'm American and my mother's maiden name was Berwick. I haven't figured out our genealogy back far enough along that line to know whether our ancestor(s) were originally from Berwick-Upon-Tweed or Berwickshire. However, there is a town in my home state of Louisiana named Berwick, so it seems some of her father's ancestors founded that town and settled there. It's just a matter of locating the records. Either way, my siblings and I are Scottish, Irish, English, French and possibly Dutch, Swiss and Native American. I hope to visit Berwick-Upon-Tweed (and elsewhere in Scotland) someday. It looks lovely! I've been to London, Windsor, and thereabouts, but not farther north. Cheers!

March 30 1296. It was when one of the worst atrocities ever committed on these islands occurred. Then, Berwick was one of the wealthiest and populous towns in Scotland. Edward of England and his army spent three days slaughtering the civilian population. Men,women and children.

My late father's ancestors came from Berwick-upon-Tweed until the 19th century. Their surnames were Burgon (a Norman surname), Clark and Hall.

@@Fernandwinnie: Scotland lost it in 1482. Life's a bitch - learn to live with that but if you insist on continuing to whinge about it then Edinburgh once was a part of the Kingdom of Northumbria....can they have it back please?

@@anghinetti When Berwick was one of the richest ports in Scotland, it was attacked in March 1296 by Edward of England.
He set his great army loose on the town, where his soldiers spent three days slaughtering the civilian population.
Woman and children were slaughtered in the streets.
Most of the population were massacred.
Berwick never recovered the prosperity it had enjoyed when it was in Scotland.
Time we recognised this atrocity instead of pretending it never happened.

My dad (Frank Riley) was born in Berwick 1921, he was schooled there, later he worked as a grave digger, later he served in WW2, after the war moved to Toronto Ontario Canada where I was born; I have always wondered about what Berwick was really like, he always described it as a tough place to grow up in, tough people, and not much else was said about it, his mother was a Postal worker. We would get the Berwick newspaper delivered to us in Toronto in the 1960s and 70s, the main stories in those papers (that I remember) would be weddings and parades.
