  • Join me for a walk around the historic heart of the northernmost town in England: Berwick-upon-Tweed! Located just two and a half miles shy of the Scottish border, this distinctive town has switched hands between England and Scotland around 14 times through history, and as such is home to a wealth of captivating and unique history, from its gorgeous bridges to its stunningly-preserved medieval defenses!
On our walk around Berwick-upon-Tweed, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Marygate, Berwick Town Hall, the old town stocks, the Buttermarket, Hill Hide, The Kings Arms Hotel, Sandgate, Shoregate, Berwick Town Walls, Berwick Bridge (The Old Bridge), old Custom House, The Main Guard, Coxon's Tower, the River Tweed, Berwick Elizabethan Ramparts, Berwick Barracks, Holy Trinity Church, St. Andrew's Wallace Green & Lowick Church, the old Berwick Advertiser building, The Leaping Salmon pub, the Royal Tweed Bridge, the statue of Lady Jerningham, the Royal Border Bridge, Bank Hill Victorian Public Toilet, Scots Gate, Castlegate, the former St. Mary's Church, Berwick War Memorial, Berwick-upon-Tweed Railway Station, Coronation Park and the ruins of Berwick Castle.

Good evening! And welcome to another narrated walk on the channel! On this walk, we're taking a tour of the northernmost town in England - Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is home to perhaps the highest density of history and heritage you'll find in the country.
We mentioned many of the fascinating stories of Berwick's history on this tour, but there were still a few things we didn't get the chance to cover. The famous artist LS Lowry often holidayed here in Berwick, and a number of his sketches depict scenes from the town, including a view off the ramparts, and a view of Berwick Lighthouse.
Another interesting fact about Berwick that owes itself to the town's hybrid nationality comes with its football team, Berwick Rangers. They play their home games across the river in Tweedmouth, but a few seasons ago, Berwick Rangers were unique in being the only English club to play in the Scottish football league. They've since been sadly relegated, but here's hoping the team can make their way back up into that unparalleled position :)

Thank you. I live in Berwick. I’m not a geordie. I’m further nort. I’m a Northumbrian but indeed as you said the accent is changing. My wife’s accent is Scottish . Her family coming from Dunbar, over the boarder there. We are a family of nine. I love this walking tour. Ii have to say you missed a gem of a sanctuary of peace and tranquility. Maybe you want to keep it to yourself. If you’re walking into the train station. There is a beautiful garden hidden away down on the left. I’m not sure many folk know this. It is so peaceful. Maybe Victorian. Looks like you’re going back to Berwick. Upon tweed. As did the artist Lowry. Their is something I can’t explain about living their.

I visited from the US last year, driving across Scotland and England by car. I only had a chance to drive through, as I had no previous knowledge of Berwick. I was struck by the town hall. Although we have similar buildings from our colonial period, there's an undeniable charm and mystique about the place. Love this.

I visited Berwick for the first time last July.
What a wonderful place. I parked in the large car park near the parish church and Barracks. I bought a parking disc from a nearby cafe/museum. It only cost £1 and can be used every day in many car parks throughout Northumberland for ever. What great value. I hope to visit again in 2022 and will follow your route around town.

Your videos are so interesting with so many facts that I sometimes miss views or subtitles, the commentary was perfect, we got the information and were able to take in the views, please make this the normal for the future.
We visited Berwick a few years ago and stayed at The Castle near the railway station visiting Holy Island and Eyemouth among other places in the area.
After a walk round the town we walked back along the Tweed and up some steps back to near the station and hotel.

It was quite a busy market then and I would buy grapes etc. Also bought mustard from the Honey 🍯 Farm. Would go on the Ramparts where the Supermarket is , then catch 3 express buses back home again . It’s a lovely ride our.

I thought Berwick had changed hands 13 times. It was Scottish until Edward I, so that was the 1st and when it flipped flopped then when the English took it, it would be the 'odd' times. However....I love Berwick. Went down there very often when I was in my early-mid teens, initially staying right under the old bank at Bridge End and then acoss the river on Dean Drive, where I met the lovely Karyn, whose family used to own the Buckthorpe Inn. Anyhow enough of my reminiscing. Very enjoyable. Thumbs up.

Thank you so much for watching - I do hope you enjoyed the video!

Berwick was once one of the wealthiest and most prosperous towns in Scotland, until it was invaded by King Edward of England and his army in 1296
For three days his army spent its time slaughtering the population. Men, women and children, regardless of age or condition were killed.
It is said thousands were murdered during one of the worst cases of genocide on these islands.

Ha ha yes indeed - although I'm rather tempted to visit all these places once again if I can and make new narrated videos, plus that might show us what things have changed in the last couple of years :)
Thank you so much for watching - I do hope you enjoyed this video!
