  • One of the strangest tales and myths in England is how one seemingly quiet town in the north of the country is still technically at war with Russia. Berwick Upon Tweed has had a turbulent history, being passed between the English and the Scots on the Scottish Border and has been the scene of massacres, invasions and bloodshed. However surprisingly someone may interpret it to still be locked in a 170 year conflict with one of the World's most powerful nations.
When the British declared war on Russia during the 1850s with the Crimean War, they included the name of Berwick upon Tweed inside the Declaration of War. The town was particularly mentioned in the beginning of the conflict, however was never mentioned in the formal armistice or treaty that ended the war. So if you take this as literally as you can then surely the conflict with Berwick upon Tweed and Russia never formally ended?
So join us as we look at the interesting myth of The English Town AT WAR With Russia, Berwick Upon Tweed.

Good luck Berwick, I'd recommend a summer offensive and get it wrapped up before the Siberian winter hits.

That's 2 videos where you've mentioned Berwick, we're largely forgotten here. Thanks for putting us back on the map!

Fascinating story! I'm not sure how well Berwick would fare in a war against Russia!

I wouldn't underestimate them as long as they don't invade during winter.

A creditable introduction. For further explanation however, including the facts about the visit of the Soviet official in 1966: ua-cam.com/video/CZMmCK3vJCI/v-deo.html (NB you'll need to turn up the volume to hear it)

Depends how literally you interpret your treaties and declarations! The bit I loved is the rumour that during the Cold War a Soviet dignitary came over to visit to 'bring an end to hostilities.'

Perhaps consider dragging the newly unelected President of the United States into this debacle. Or better, let his newly appointed guy, John Kerry to involve this in the re-treaty with Iran, soon to be made.
