The problem with Fifth Gear and one of the key reason I dont watch that many videos is you guys treat every car like a Ferrari. If I am interested in an estate car, the last point I want to know is how it corners, dampers and any G meter, but on the boot capacity. So come on guys !!
Yes that's so right, why do these idiots always judge a car on how fast it goes around a track, why not think about aspects of a car for a change.. Comfort test, ease of everyday use test, cruising test, satisfaction test, ease of loading test, after all they are estate cars !!
Agreed
Because they're car people. It's always thus.
Very true.
At the heart of it I think it's to appeal to men who know they need a practical family car but deep down want something that can feel slightly sporty too, which is what these specific models are appealing to with their top end engine lines.
I'd still always take the Volvo V90. What a gorgeous, comfortable, calming car with no chip on its shoulder.
It's not reliable. So many electronic problems. If under warranty then it's not a problem but once it's out of warranty then that's another story.
A Stick & 3 Pedals the old ones, nowerdays they are quite good.
@@AStick3Pedals same with Skoda
@@AStick3Pedals bro none of these European cars are reliable tbh
@@AStick3Pedals well weve had a v90 for 3 years and no major problems
Doesn't Volvo have even faster engines on offer for the V90? Although maybe they're not available in the UK, who knows.
Yeah there is a T6 and T8. Idk if they're available in the UK though
@@AStick3Pedals Yep, both T6 and T8 are available, both AWD. T6 is 320bhp and T8 is 390bhp. T6 is +£6000 on the T5 they tested though.
Yeah T6 and T8 are both available in the UK. Probably didn't test it against the Superb because of the price already being so much more. Ofc the Volvo is in premium category, against BMW, Audi and Mercedes, and the Superb is against normal cars like Vauxhall, VW, and Ford
@@denon7474 They should've just tested the V60 T5. Then the price difference would be significantly less and the cars would've been closer in size. It would have been a much more level playing field.
Yes the T6 and T8 are available in the uk the T8 is really nice 400bhp
If you would have chosen the V60 T5, you would have saved 13.000 euros, this means 3000 euros less than the skoda which you can spend on the Four-C suspension system, for sportiness as well as comfort options and Polestar Optimization to bring the 0-100 down to 6.6. Even if you would have chosen the T6 AWD (300hp AWD), 0-100 in 5,6 sec which is 0,1 sec faster than the skoda and you would have saved 11.000 euros compared to the same trim V90 T5. If you would have chosen the V60, the dimensions would have been way more similar.
Than*
The superb is bigger, MUCH bigger than the V60
@@TheAlee2404 Size isn't everything ;)
@@TheAlee2404 no it isn't, the V60 is 10 cm longer, 2 cm wider but 4 cm less in height. Unless you look at the 2020 one, then it is 9cm shorter, but 3 cm longer wheelbase. 1cm wider and 4cm less in height
@@TheAlee2404 as a comparison, the V90 is 9cm longer, with a 10cm longer wheelbase. 2 wider and same height
Always loved these fifth gear shootouts
Just because they're both estate cars, doesn't mean they're level competitors. They are, however, different class of cars. The Volvo attribute is very different from the Skoda in many ways. And it has options of higher power range. In any case, for a heavier, longer and lower powered car to loose by only half a sec, it's a no brainier which car is more desirable.
exactly, that's why Volvo is almost bankrupt and Skoda sells an insane amount of Vehicles. Nobody wants volvos anymore
Sorin petri Volvo have only been setting new sales records after new platform and the split from Ford was initiated. ?
@@sorinelpustiu5674How in the world do you defend that conclusion?
Personally I'm tired of Volvo Cars, they're not up my alley at all nowadays. And the 180 kph speed limiter threw their German customers into a fit...
But near bankruptcy???
This seems like an unfair comparison. 1) The T6 would be more properly matched for performance. And if you argue that the price difference would be even further apart and unfair.... That's because 2) The Audi A6 Avant is its more direct competitor
engine layout
Yes dead right, in fact it should of been the Volvo V60 much nearer in size and price, and I bet the V60 T5 would be faster than the Skoda with far more style to boot !
@@Colin623 the superb has more space than the volvo 😂 so superb vs v90 and octavia vs v60 if you go after size. When you look at the price, the superb is the best estate for the money
@@hakonbeistad899 agree
If you want a sporty Volvo, why pick the least porwerful gasoline engine for it? Guys you can do better
The skoda pissed it good car great price, I'd pick the skoda superb, to many people with badge snobbery.
volvo is better, but in my coutry this skoda cost 35-40k euro, volvo whith similar extra is 65-70k. Not that good for double price
Skoda is not a luxury brand that capitalizes on passenger safety with comfortable drive. It is a utility car. Skoda is still a good car but they are not competitors.
We bought a Skoda superb L&K. With the biggest engine 272hp. It's truly amazing. Love it, and when I drove the v90 I really didn't enjoy it.
Ive got a V90 T6 R Design P* with the rear air and 4c, and its an incredible automobile. I gotta make a vid on it. It's not super fast but it just looks and feels amazing.
Why you gotta flex on us i have t5 Rd
You got a T6 R? Man, you're one lucky dude!
Marry the car then if you're that in love with it.
Reading this made me tear up. Volvo is love.
What u think of v90 cc b5?
Volvo V90 feels like drivin a bigass leather sofa
Mustekala1 but is is quite fast
Not really sure what the point of this shootout was. The top line Skoda vs the lowest V90 (there are T6 and T8 Powertrains available). AWD v FWD , both models are available with both configurations. If it was “hey you can get a Skoda that’s way way way cheaper” then spec the V90 appropriately and compare the over £20k+ cost difference but you will see the V90 come out faster
The point is that the Superb really cannot be touched as an all-round estate package for the money. It has class leading interior space, class leading luggage space, class leading performance, and class leading refinement.
I've taken one of those Superb's for a test drive and it is a truly spectacular package. If you need a car that can do absolutely everything very well without costing small fortune, the Superb is without peer.
It's comparing things of the same price. Ofc the v90 top spec will smoke the Skoda but it costs a lot more so what is there to compare? For a buyer with a budget in mind this type of test is the best
I wonder how many buyers of these cars will drive them on the track? I can't think of a more irrelevant test. A thorough road test on the road would be so much more relevant to the vast majority of prospective buyers of these cars
NZ police are buying 2000 of these, they might see the relevance...
It is nice to now both cars can be thrown around like that.
Volvo is very, very nice but Skoda is SUPERB ;)
@Johnny Dong nothing
Lease a Volvo V90 to tow your 850R race car to and from the track.
good descriptions :)
Real value of this car is not on the race track. There are some other values for station vagons rather then speed drive. Based on car main purpose you should choose comparable values and track speed is not always that value. Maybe you should compare off road capabilities of porshe 911 and ferrari monza...
I had a Volvo V70 and loved it. Now I've got a Superb and I love it more.
4:07 gorgeous car there
Skoda Superb....surely YES
I bought a 2016 Audi S3 a couple of years ago, and before I bought it I test drove a brand new Superb Sportline (in sedan form). I didn't intend to test drive it because firstly it was out of budget, and secondly I didnt think it would be sporty enough for my taste. But the guy at the dealership wanted an excuse to drive it so he practically begged me to take it out for a drive.
So I did! And I have to say, it was a really, really nice thing. It certainly isn't the most agile thing in the world - you DO feel the size of the car. But it's the smoothest, most comfortable and effortless driving experience ive ever had. The DSG gearbox is much smoother and more refined then the one in my S3, and the car is so smooth and quiet that when you put your foot down you dont really FEEL like you're moving that quick...until you look at the speedoeter and realise just how quick you are going.
The car is so roomy and the seats so comfortable that you feel ike you're sitting in gold class at the cinemas, and if you put it in sport mode the car actually turns impressively flat and has very little noticable bodyroll. In comfort mode it feels like a limosine. I should also mention that Infotainment system is probably the best ive ever used in any new car - great high res graphics, very easy to use, and one of the few cars with wireless Android Auto / Carplay.
I actually drove an A4 2.0T Quattro as well, and while the A4 looks great inside and out, the Superb was a better thing to actually drive in almost every way. The Superb impressed me so much that I ended up taking out a lease on a Skoda Octavia RS245, and I have to say it's been incredibly impressive as well. I still have my eye on a Superb Sportline once my Octavia lease expires. It might well be THE best value car in the world.
This would be alot better if you tested cars realistically and not treat them like race cars. They're estate cars who cares if one is faster than the other. Also one costs significantly less than the other.
Why didn't you compare the Skoda with the Volvo T6 @310 hp 4wd version?
My next car (second hand) I’m pretty sure will an estate and Skoda and Volvo are my top 2 choices.
Right now I’d probably go with Skoda due to fuel economy mainly although I’d love a Volvo estate too.
I wish the V90 a tad boxier. My ideal V90 is a nice plug-in T8.
No one is going to buy that engine in the Superb. Everyone buys diesel or petrol engines with less than 200 hp.
I've got one, love it
I’ve got one, it’s an absolute blast.
got diesel, pumped to 240 hp
Yeah, me too. Sportline Estate. Great car.
My Dad bought the L&K 280 instead of the diesel...The engine is brilliant since its a detuned Golf R motor. I'd take it over the diesel!
Why not compare the t6 or t8?
I love both,
V90 is in a completely different class than the superb. Its like comparing a honda accord to a 3 series estate.
Honda accord versus 3 series estate is even more different than v90 vs superb 😂
Also wanted to mention that. Different classes...
Not at all true. Superb and V90 are both high performance, luxury estate cars.
An Accord and 3 series are totally different classes of car.
This is old model of superb.. There is new, which is way better.
You have taken the most powerful skoda superb. Then why you are not taking t6 V90 which has 4 wheel drive as well and around 300bhp?
Is the Volvo in dynamic mode
Give me the Volvo please. 😍 😍
Where I live the Škoda is pretty much the same price as a V90 R design
where do you live
did they compare a front-wheel driven, 250 hp car vs a 4WD 280 hp one ?
not surprising from fifth gear...
Would take the Škoda 4WD and fastest than the Volvo what I get with so much luxury if when need use those extra hp in emergency accelerations the Volvo won't bring me that extra accelerations and that might be the difference between the life and the death
The Volvo !! No Ono drives like that in daily
It is great to see that it can take it. Both are nice cars.
That's a good example why I really dont like 5th gear and most car journalism in general...they threat even the most practical family cars like sports cars and leave out any information that is really relevant for the everyday driver, driving to work or carrying the family, in most cases over less than perfect roads.
Most people don't buy an estate for speeding do they?
Pointless review. I am not going to the race track with a volvo. I use it to drive from city to city.
I LOVE VOLVOS
Drove a V90 Cross Country around Kyalami race track, and although the performance is good, the engine sound shit! The four cylinder sounds like a sophisticated vacuum cleaner - gone is the days of lovely 5, 6 and 8 cylinders with lovely sound tracks... (Otherwise, a really great and good looking car!)
Škoda 😍
Why would you take any notice of " just under a second " difference. Both looked good on the track. Comparing an AWD to Front wheel drive...hmmmm.
Won't you agree that for a FWD and being 20 hp and over 150kg heavier, it did hold pretty well?
I would say that neither looked good. The V90 did look very bad because of the suspension.
Fifth Gear never does any comparisons fairly, it's I'm sure weighted to one more then the other, or more to the point is who gives the tester the bigger freeby's.
How can you do it fairly? There is no large Estate car on the planet that can touch the Skoda's performance and overall track capabilities for the money. For them to pick a Volvo that came closer to matching the Skoda's performance they would need to pick something far more expensive, in which case it wouldn't be a fair comparison for the Skoda.
Edit: Sorry, I'm wrong - there is ONE Estate car that is comparable to the Skoda, and that wold be the VW Passat 4Motion wagon, which actually has the same basic platform and drivetrain. But that is basically the same car in a different set of clothes, so it woudl probably be fairly pointless doing that comparison.
So the Volvo is down on power heavier and is not all wheel drive. And has way more comfort And the Skoda is lighter has more power (only just) 4 wheel drive not as comfortable. And is only a second faster . So it's just down to the money really. I'm still going for the Volvo
i thought it would be a practicality comparison and daily driver comparison who cares about their track ability, no one try doing relevant testing inline with the type of car
Premium brands depreciated recently and they do not deliver any meaningful advantage. Still, there are some criteria you cannot measure nor directly observe in any such “test”.
Volvo has been always a company building solid cars, solid but not always reliable , facing some issues with electric systems. Safety is class leading and real safety is unbeatable. Both passive and active.
The Skoda may have some systems on board but the way they work is not in the same league as on the Volvo. Skoda is big but hollow, far from solid definition. Not in the same league as the Volvo and other premium cars.
Track time difference is minor and statistically irrelevant. Different drivers would come up with different results. Sport version (by Polestar ) of the Volvo, even with same engine, would deliver slightly better results.
Totally irrelevant test really. My choice would be the Volvo, Had a V90 on test did over a thousand miles in a week, comfy, economical and BIG! Also gotta be one of the best looking estates you can buy.
I would like to know who thought comparing a V90 with a Superb would be ideal. At least use the V60. Not fair contest once again.
Wait how is it not fair to compare two cars of the same class with their highest output engines?
V6O is smaller size than Superb if you didn't know or notice. Octavia is match for V60. Only problem (or not fair) is that V90 is without AWD in this test.
SHROOMY The T5 is the least powerful engine for the V90, at least it is in the US.
zuti071
Octavia vs V60?
That’s like comparing a Golf to a 3-Series.
@@zuti071 Yes, but no.
Skoda is the best
Кто выиграл?
I love Skoda
This is a perfect example of modern auto journalists bias towards "sportiness."
Does the average customer value sporty cars with hard suspension more than a pretty comfy and roomy family hauler? I honestly don't think so.
But since every auto journalist seems to be a retired race car driver that's the only focus in every single test.
Tiresome.
Now, with that said...
I'd take the Škoda every day of the week, but not the "sporty" one. I would go for a luxury spec L&K 4x4 with the most powerful engine 'cause I want comgort and towing capacity.
you forget the volvo is built to be like you said luxury, and if you want the "sport" version you should really be going for the polestar edition... which I expect would eat the skoda any day
Still, the R-design aspires to be a sport package with beefed up suspension and spoilers and all that.
So pretty fair in my book.
I miss Tiff...
Fifth gear is no longer fifth gear without Jeremy Clarkson...
do u mean Tiff Neddell?
V60 t5 probably better comparison
Why? It's much smaller than the skoda.
Dont forget skoda is vw ags budget brand. They say wanna play on estates ..
T5 is the base petrol engine now 😂. Ya'll couldn't have gotten a T6??? This was such a messy comparison. Or even a T6 w/ Polestar tune on it???
The Volvo is already 10.000 pounds more expensive. With a better engine it would have been a lot more expensive
I believe the T5's can be Polestar tuned so, yay? Our dealership had Polestar sedan come through now those things are brutal!
Or the T8
@@sbstn110 That's why the V60 would of been a more sensible comparison ! common sense really.
I want to go for a V90 but the Skoda Supurb Combi wins. Massive boot, good engine, good transmission and drivetrain caught my attention.
DSG sucks
@@TheSouldestroyer666 Even the Superb liftback can swallow 3 large suitcases and 3 carry on backpacks.
BMW touring? 340i or 330i, 330d ect?
Smaller cars. The 5 series is comparable to these.
Volvo for me
I'd take the Volvo every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
The Skoda is much better value and much more spacious
If you get the T6 Volvo you get a supercharger as well as the turbo and if you get the T8 you get a supercharger turbocharger and a electric motor that boosts horsepower to as near as makes no difference 400 bhp
Also if you want a fast estate you need to get a Volvo V60 polestar engineered
Thought the Volvo did well to get within a second of the more powerful AWD Skoda
He should compare diesel engines in those cars. At least 95% of people in europe will buy diesel for better fuel economy and much better resale value.
You folx are so boring. Why? Enjoyment in life is important.
humm but if that is the most powerful skoda you should pit against the t8 polestar version to have a more firm suspension and handling, but that of course would separate the value of the cars even further, just saying that the volvo t5 isn't the most powerfull engine of the line up!
I would take superb
You should have tested a T6 instead of a T5
That would have made the Volvo about 16000£ dearer than the Superb, at which point you’re just not talking about the same segment of the market anymore.
They should of put the V60 up against the Skoda ! similar size, same Volvo quality, but better handling and speed around a track, plus better power to weight ratio !
@@Colin623 "similar size" ??? Superb is much bigger than V60. Anyway V60 T5 is still more expensive than Superb 2.0 TSI. When the Sportline ends with prize, there Volvo is starting...
@@Colin623 FWD with 245hp and 6.5s 0-100, it dont keep up, Skoda has still 280hp and gets to 100 in 5.7 all this in 4x4... so not even close
@@Isowiha To start with the Volvo is bigger and heavier than the Skoda, and as the tester said quiet clearly the Volvo was in a different class and felt more like a 'Premium Car' compared to the cheaper inferior product, you get what you pay for, if want a basic interior with space and pace, then save yourself £10,000 and buy the Skoda, but if you prefer comfort and luxury go for the Volvo, it's horses for courses, because the V90 is so much bigger than the Skoda I still think that the V60 would of been more suitable match even though it would be a little smaller (10mm) than the Skoda but then the Skoda is smaller than the Volvo V90 by 15mm in length and width.
So in short then you're getting a bigger and more luxurious car for your £10,000, but if you are looking for a cheaper lower spec car then save your money and get the Skoda.
both are great cars but vag cars feel cheap to me
Volvo is still a way better looking car
If a Scoda ever tries to compete with the more premium brands it will come short. The Volvo here is not the more expensive T6 model with more power and, oh yes, style.
The V90 is an E-segment vehicle. They should have compared the V60
And the Superb isn’t? How do you figure that?
WHY would you test an Estate car on a Race track ??? its all about S P A C E and features i thought and how u can pack in your family and holiday stuff ???
Absolutely, the clown presenters are only interested in getting from 0-60 in 2 seconds!!
Should have used the T6. Different story!
The T5 is already £10k more, so it gets to be a bit of a silly comparison at T6 level
That Volvo handles like a lug.
Buy a nearly new V90. The depreciate like a rock at the moment so you can get them for a steal
Most people that buy them keep them for the long term and do not sell them the moment they drive out the garage.
Yeah but tell me about the 0-62 time in an estate car again. Go on. Tell me about how quickly they can go from 0 to 62mph. Go on. How about the really important top speeds? Tell me about how quickly they can go. And what about G-Forces? These things are just so important when considering which ESTATE CAR to buy.
If you want to overtake other cars the acceleration is important. For example in Norway it's hard to overtake cars if you have a too sluggish engine. This because most roads lack any long straights.
Hi there, are you sure about the torque figure of the Skoda? same engine on the Arteon has 350nm, May be you meant 250 lb ft (1:27)
He said 350nm, so it is correct
He said 250 horse power not Newton metres
harry andrews he said 270 horsepower, did you watch the video
They should take a V60 T5 RD to complete with Superb
Listen, I like the superb anf its priced very well but how can you even compare it to the V90?
Skoda has improved greatly the last years. But you have to buy some better trim to realize it.
It just won this test
Since I'm an American, I don't understand why VW makes Skoda. Is Skoda supposed to be a better VW? Is the Superb just a Jetta or Passat wagon in a fancy spec???
It's not better than a Volkswagen. Its cheaper. It's the most bang for your buck car company in the VAG. Seat on the other hand is sometimes better than Volkswagen and sometimes not 😂
Škoda is the economy brand in the VW group. Same technology as VW and Audi, but less prestigious and a bit cheaper. The Škoda Superb is bigger than the VW Passat, and if you're not really concerned about the badge in the front it's probably a better choice than a Passat.
Its supposed to be cheaper vw. But sometimes skoda is worth it more... especially superb. There is more legroom than in passat or even audi a6 really.
Vampirebear13 You get more for your money with a Skoda. The fit and finish is usually not as good as VW counterpart. But build quality is arguably just as good, they use same engines. But the technology that VW used to use a few years ago (they’re a bit behind) but still good value for money and usually a quality product. Usually as well you’ll get more as standard than you would on a VW and Skoda’s whole ethos is they’re bigger/more practical.
Id like a bit more performance says Mr Plato. Get a T6 then. Volvo laps a second slower than the Skoda which is the difference in the 0 to 60 times. Need to compare like with like but it’s irrelevant with these cars. They are estates for cruising and filling with stuff not sports cars
I decide on the Skoda Superb ,,,, sure if
This is quite a stupid test imo. They should have compared the Superb to the V60.
It should have been against the more powerful v90 AWD T6 ( turbo+supercharged 2.0 Litre 4 cylinder).
or the v90 Cross-Country AWD T6.
@@Vamanos46 why would you use the cross country version?
...Why? The V60 is smaller than the Superb.
@@shroomyesc V90 is bigger than Superb, and V60 is cheaper than V90.

The one thing both VW and Volvo got wrong, was getting rid of the 5 cylinder engine.
They had to in order to lower emissions.
Remap the skoda..and its a proper sleeper.
It's a big family car idiot haha
If you get the Skoda in top L&K spec, there's far more gadgets and luxury touches but you keep the 272hp and the AWD......and it's still £4k cheaper than the Volvo.
You'll get softer leather, softer carpets and a bit less noise in the Volvo but in terms of bang for your buck.....there aren't a lot if cars that can match the Superb.
Skoda
I have had a ‘17 Superb Sportline since new and have done about 96000 km - great car. Needs stiffer suspension and could use another 25 or 30km. It can be driven quickly - needs to be tipped in late. Happily fits a large dual suspension 29” mtb without removing a wheel.
Volvo looks great!
Affordable estate?? Volve costs a fortune
But this Volvo has bad engine.. In the V90 you can have T6 or T8 with 405HP.
That's not even a question, of course the Volvo is vastly superior. And I say that as a Czech.
Why didn't they use the T8? That would have blown the Skoda away.
Because it would be nowhere near comparable on price.
Skoda 4 wheel drive v 2 wheel drive Volvo not exactly a good comarison, why did you not pit the Volvo V90 CC 4 wheel drive up against the Skoda, that would have made more sense.
Volvo V60 T5 AWD better match, price much closer, but same Volvo quality and safety.
Why the V90? The V60 would be more logical
Because the V60 is a smaller car than the Skoda Superb.
