  • Eunice reunites with her high school friend Midge. Guest starring Joanne Woodward. Unedited sketch originally aired 2/14/1976.
The Family sketches from The Carol Burnett Show are a series of comedic skits featuring the dysfunctional and hilariously over-the-top characters of the dysfunctional family led by the Eunice, played by Carol Burnett. The sketches typically center around family gatherings and often highlight the chaotic dynamics and exaggerated personalities of the family members.
    Key characters include:
Eunice: The ambitious and often frustrated daughter who craves recognition and love from her family, frequently engaging in melodramatic confrontations.
Ed: Eunice's bumbling husband, portrayed by Harvey Korman, who often struggles to keep up with the chaos around him.
Mama: The sharp-tongued, no-nonsense mother played by Vicki Lawrence, whose brutal honesty and sarcasm often steal the show.
The sketches are known for their witty dialogue, physical comedy, and the relatability of family dysfunction, drawing laughs from the audience as they navigate their quirky and often absurd interactions. The Family sketches became iconic for their blend of humor and heart, showcasing the talents of the cast and the show's ability to resonate with viewers.

Hollywood is now full of morons who don't understand that people don't want their political opinions. Their sole job is to entertain the masses, and they can't even do that. It was pretty amusing to hear Ricky Gervais call out his fellow _'entertainers'_ on this for both the dying golden globes and oscars.

I don't think the Carol Burnett show was so much the acting it was the reacting to the lines on the page. That's something you can't teach. There was a lot of ad-libbing on this show too. So, as funny as the scripts might have been, they were made 10 times as funny with the natural way they said the lines and reacted to the lines.

Always negative, never had a kind word to say about anyone and mood swings that would give you whiplash! I miss my mom every day, but sadly, I’m glad she’s gone. Oh and I forgot that my brother was the Ellen of the family. Everyone’s favorite, can do no wrong, but I was the one that took care of mom while dear Ellen didn’t do anything! Yup, this is my family! Hilarious but touched with that little bit of pathos/sadness, like all the ‘Family’ sketches. Midge Gibson. Lol. The contempt in Vickie Lawrence’s voice is chilling when she says Alley Cat. And the way the audience laughed at the joke where Midge’s ex husband used to beat her. Ouch. Also, my grandmother, in the 70's had the same wallpaper in her house "going up the steps" and in the upstairs hallway. It's like a trellis with ivy and some type of pink flower. Seeing it in these sketches brings back some painful memories! It isn't just these scripts that are bone chilling. My grandmother and mother had a temper like Mama and Eunice, and I often felt like Midge does in this sketch until I stopped speaking to them forever.
