I have worked with so many people who were stupid enough to be rude to secretaries, receptionists, handymen/cleaners/janitors and wait staff. Those "nobodies" have so much power. If you can't treat them with simple human dignity and respect for their work, at least have the intelligence to treat them with fear of how they can make your life hell if you cross them.
This is writing at its best, and Harvey Korman and Carol Burnett's deliveries are impeccable! The sketches were the best, their musicals were phenomenal and all the characters were thoroughly entertaining! I sure miss this show!
Jimmy Bowen had a tale on that in his "Rough Mix" book - handling the sound on a Grand Ole Opry show spotlighting MCA Records country acts in 1978, he was so P.O.'d about Tanya Tucker being late, he turned the sound to maximum volume (equivalent of 11) when Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys played their set.
As insufferable Funt and Mundane may be, I'll still appreciate 1) Their love for each other and 2) Their determination to keep the show on no matter whatever happens.
1) That's by no means a fixed thing; he's had more than a few affairs, most notably with an actress played by Maggie Smith. 2) "The show must go on" is an edict which they exemplify until it just gets too much, and then it's "Curtain, you fools!"
Funt & Mundane are one of my favorite recurring sketches from Carol and the gang ... up there with the Family/Eunice and Mama sketches, and As the Stomach Turns. Sheer hilarity.
They went through a number of names before they settled on Funt and Mundane (which was of course a spoof on the names of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne). I personally hated the Eunice skits, but I love "As the Stomach Turns."
@@MaskedMan66 - I can see why the "Family" sketches caught on, though (ultimately leading to the "Mama's Family" series) - a good number of those who watched the show had their own tales of family dysfunction that both Carol and Vicki were all too painfully aware of in their own family dynamics growing up, and thus could relate strongly. Still, I don't care much for those either, though one cannot fault how much Ms. Lawrence nailed her performance of Mama. On this, at least Funt shared Lunt's first name; however, what would have been Miss Mundane's?
@@wmbrown6 "Mama's Family" is a lot more palatable because Thelma was toned down to where she doesn't scream over the least little thing and was much more three-dimensional. I guess I just had an ideal family, because when someone in the audience would say during Carol's question time, "I love those skits! Those people are just like my own family," my instant thought was, "You poor soul!" Borderline psychopaths with ego problems screaming at each other every few minutes just doesn't tickle my humerus.
@@MaskedMan66 - Yeah, by then "Mama" had all her rough edges as in clear evidence in "The Family" sketches all sanded down, smoothed out and softened up.
@@MaskedMan66 - I seem to remember, from the earliest (not counting a sketch taped in England and aired on CBS in November 1970), Harvey's character alone was known as: - Robert Preston Foster - Clive Kensington - Lester Standish - Leslie Amherst (with Carol as his drunk-as-a-skunk wife and co-star Linda) The earliest known "Ham Actors" sketch with them as "Funt and Mundane" is believed to be Nov. 23, 1970. Would this be it?
For those not familiar with theater history, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne were once the most famous and celebrated couple in American theater. Supposedly, their backstage feuds and fights were the inspiration for Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me, Kate.” They were awarded Tonys for lifetime achievement in 1970. Unfortunately, because all of their work was on stage there is no historical film of their performances. I believe they may have performed once for television but the show wasn’t saved for posterity. I did find this brief clip of them, though, which also includes Helen Hayes and Katherine Hepburn: ua-cam.com/video/ZezzeUpvjQw/v-deo.html
The full name of Harvey Korman's character in these sketches was established as Alfred Funt; there's been no evidence with Ms. Burnett's (only a "Miss Mundane" to her from characters like the stage directors, either Lyle Waggoner or who played the role after Mr. Waggoner left), so I wonder - was her character's full name Lynn (or Lynne) Mundane?
I think it's so brilliant when Korman steps out on stage and acknowledges the applause. He's supposed to be the world's greatest actor, yet he can't resist breaking character to take a bow.
Scott Allen, it wasn’t entirely acting. Harvey had quite an ego. After the first week of the show Carol gave him an ultimatum, there are no prima donnas here; we’re a family, a team. Either start becoming a part of the team or leave the show. Obviously, he wanted the job.
My favourite episode of these 2 is when they play the Astro bowl. " Good night dear I will be in directly.. Kiss kiss". Harvey has done such a great job spoofing the originals.
Given that there were three "road shows" Carol did over the show's 11-year run (in London in 1970; New York City in 1971; and Sydney, Australia in 1973), one wonders what a Funt and Mundane sketch would have looked like if the show entered into an agreement to do one edition at the Miami Beach Auditorium where Jackie Gleason produced his variety show from 1964 until its 1970 cancellation.
PS Immediately shared with my silent film fan friend on Canada's west coast (I am far east coast Canada), and also shared with a small local circle of classic film fan friends, as well as on Facebook! Hope a few of my pals check this out. Thank you!!
@@inkyguy The word is "treading." To tread is to walk. "Trod" is the past tense of "tread." As an actor, I have trod the boards myself. He should have said, "our years of treading the boards."

Best thing to watching while resting after running 10 miles is the Carol Burnett Show
I am feeling the hair, the earrings and both dresses. Bob Mackie knocked this out of the park baby!
My goodness her outfit is magnificent. 😍😍
Bob Mackie of course!

Harvey Korman is a fabulous dancer, as well as a comedic genius. Watching these skits always lifts my spirits.
I'm always laughing with tears watching Carol sketches. A long lost art of comedy writing.
Font & Mundane are hilarious ! They really crack me up 🤣 when they
try to be professional , then everything unrevels as the play goes on.!!
So Original ! And Hilarious , Korman So Talented ; In All His Character Roles .
Carol & the gang were *THE* best!!!!
This is pure comedy. How I miss these shows.
So happy to find them on UA-cam free!.if I had kids I'd show them this kind of program
My daughter is 42 and she loves watching the skits. I always looked forward to The Carol Burnett Show! The best!
Hahahahaha how Lyle and Harvey can keep going without breaking character laughing is incredible.
"Where is she?!" was my favorite line.
I worked in theater for over twenty years, DO NOT MESS WITH THE CREW if you have a problem with them, go to the stage manager.
4:30
Harvey: “More champagne darling?”
Carol: “GET IT OUT!!!”
In music, when you piss off the sound crew, they turn up the suck knob. This is the theater equivalent 🤣

Funt and Mundane are the best Sketches that Carol and Harvey do. I am watching the best of the best . Ron
U don’t have to sign ur name it’s listed at the top lol

No one makes me laugh like carol Burnett, I’m so glad you upload these videos, I watch them every night :)
Never saw this. I'm excited to watch. Of course already laughing. Thank You Carol Burnett & crew
These two are hilarious. And wow Carol in that dress is super fine.
I know right...even today, that dress is still beautiful

I loved all the ham actor sketches. They were priceless…..true story

Classic Harvey Korman and Carol!
I feel like this is the precursor to the Everything Goes Wrong Show

Harvey Korman is one of my all time favorite sketch comedians
A CLASSY CLASSIC....
😂😂 I don't think they 😂😂 should have spoken to 😂😂 the crew like that before a last show.😂😂😂
This is hilarious 😂😂🤣
Harvey could play a good ham actor just like the late Jack Cassidy.did.
I forgot to add in playing a cad.
Just found this on my phone so time 2 laugh once again luv it
Carol's scream at 6:54!!! XD
Wahahah the tarzan yell at the beginning is to funny 😂😂😂
The ham actor stuff was great!
They are lucky. The play would be boring without this!
Hilarious!.
What a hilarious sketch, I couldn't stop laughing
Lyle was so very handsome
Just peel it!! Too funny
So neat she is still alive!
Bravo. Bravo!
My granddaughter is in NYC with others from her high school drama club. They were in the Lunt-Fontanne Theater to see Sweeney Todd.
Just curious: If Carol were to have done a play or musical in that venue, would it have been renamed the Funt-Mundane Theater for the duration?
The crew members look like Larry, Darryl, and Darryl from Newhart. 😅
I came for the red hair. I stayed for the plantain.
good Wednesday morning @Carol Burnett :) I subscribed to your channel
Great comedy.
Its as if theirs was the height for comedys radioactive decay
It’s going to be payback! HPLMAO!
A very funny one.....
Bravissimo!
10:13 - 10:16 LMAO!😂
I know..and I near died laughing when she said, "why don't you just peel it?" XD
I liken the Go Wrong show to those Ham Actor skits.
Hilarious!
Notice at 2:13 how she winks to the audience. Ham actors, indeed.
The original The Goes Wrong Show.
It’s a good thing the stage crew got involved. That looks like it would’ve been a very boring play not for all of the mishaps.
Our years of "trodding" the boards?
