In a 40-minute interview recorded this afternoon, Israel’s former Deputy Foreign Minister, who also served as the country’s former Ambassador to Washington, Danny Ayalon, has responded to all the tough questions about Israel’s response to the Hamas attack. This is, therefore, an interview you should watch because it’s the clearest and sharpest articulation both of Israel’s known position and, more importantly, its response to criticisms that are made of what Israel has done and proposes to do.

If you listen carefully to Ayalan, he just threatened to bomb Gaza with the same blind force as the Allies in Dresden in February 1945 or the US in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of the same year.
He should be reminded that the concept of “war crime” was introduced in international law (Geneva Convention) in 1949.
At the end of the 6th day of war, IDF has confirmed a total of at least 6.000 bombs dropped on the Gaza Strip.
If you exclude the agricultural zones of Gaza, this means a minimum of 22 bombs per km2.
How many left before reaching the threshold of a war crime?

    • @ahmadbhatti4875

      @kathleenbrady9916 11 місяців тому

Perhaps, but compassion isn't personal and knows no boundaries and applies to all humans...my point was that the suffering of the Palestinians should be included ...and I certainly have compassion for those killed or injured by Hammas. Talking of the Gaza strip being developed 'after the war' with tourism because of its nice beaches was horrific and completely overlooked the genocide that could be carried out in Gaza and the consequent suffering. We might not agree here but deep pain doesn't have to transform into hatred and revenge, it can be an opportunity for developing compassion for all beings and a peaceful solution.. We're all hurting here but where has revenge got the world? We have to move beyond that if we have any chance of surviving catastrophe. Thanks for your comment.

Karan Thapar, I’ve just come across you and this show this past week.
    Splendid interview - just fantastic.
    Horrifying yet uplifting - simultaneously
I only hope that he’s right that there’ll be reckoning and that what replaces him is a government that leans more towards a genuine commitment to peace. Though with the bombings having gone on as long as they have now - just don’t see how.
I hope you invite him on again soon, now that we’re further into the bombing., to take him up more firmly on how they can’t possibly be serious about doing what they can to protect civilians/hitting mainly legit military targets.
“We’re humane because we’re telling them to leave and go south” (at the same instant, bombing all over the place with 1000s killed in such a short time - before people have begun moving anywhere)

Danny Ayalon seems to be utterly devoid of a moral compass. Best one can say is that he is living in some parallel mental universe. The evil act that Hamas committed last week is undeniable but Danny Ayalon needs to get his head out of the sand and perhaps if at some time in the future he will reflect on his words and as a human being feel a sense of shame at his arrogance and callousness. But thats perhaps too much to expect. Well done to KT for challenging him.

Looks like Danny Ayalon misrepresented PLO's position on 2-state solution (40:20 mark). Israel as a Jewish state was accepted by PLO under Oslo accords.
Also, here and now was the focus and how we got here was conveniently mostly ignored. Not covered in the interview were other factors that have also been major barriers for peace - the expansion of settlements in West Bank there by perpetuation of sabotage of Oslo Accords; Hamas equivalent Jewish religious extremist groups (one of them assassinated PM Rabin) and American evangelicals looking for Armageddon and return of Christ plays a part in perpetuation of violence.

Former Deputy Foreign Minister seems reasonable, sensible and open minded. Simultaneously it is also true that behind strengthening of Hamas was Netanyahu's approach to use it to weaken PLO/ Fateh. In the interview he envisage of making Gaza like Singapore but the track record of Israel in respect to honouring International agreements like Oslo is rather disappointing.
Thanks sir, (Karan Thapar) for such a balanced interview. He answered many critical questions without losing his temper unlike quite a few Indian politicians and with a smile. I really enjoyed watching it. Hope both Israelis and Palestinians find a peaceful resolution to their problem.

As an orthodox jew. I support the creation of a free and independent Palestinian state. This will end all the violence. As Jews we need to accept that Israel is the occupying force and we need to do the right thing and give Palestinians their own independent state free from Israeli interferences. ISRAEL, USA AND UK NEED TO STOP THE GENOCIDE TAKING PLACE ON THE OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN LANDS or history wont be kind to them as it wasn't to the Nazis and every other occupation.

The ever honest and bold Senior Journalist Mr.KaranThapar bombarded the former foreign minister of Israel with the justified tough questions. The Israel FM was very uncomfortable and ended up with mostly controversial, evasive and unrealistic answers. Defending and trying to tke back own lands cannot be acts of terrorism. Salute to Mr.Thapar for being so reasonable.

This is a strategy of destroying Hamas with brute force. That's what Gideon Levy, and the Haaretz editorial board, said Netanyahu and his supporters have been trying for decades, it hasn't worked and it won't work. Levy said it's not sustainable to have an apartheid state. It seems that Israeli public opinion may be turning away from Netanyahu and the "only military" strategy. Two of Netanyahu's ministers visited a hospital and the doctors said they were responsible for this situation and urned them away.

Great interview, just curious why direct questions about Israeli settlers in the west bank were not asked. From what I understand, the Israeli army was so focused on protecting settlers who were bulldozing legit Palestinian homes that they failed to protect the borders through which Hamas stormed in.

@@zkojani Christopher Eric Hitchens (13 April 1949 - 15 December 2011) was a British author and journalist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential atheists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Author of 18 books on faith, culture, politics, and literature, he was born and educated in Britain, graduating in the 1970s from Oxford.
American theoretical physicist and cosmologist Lawrence Krauss said, "Christopher was a beacon of knowledge and light in a world that constantly threatens to extinguish both. He had the courage to accept the world for just what it is and not what he wanted it to be. That's the highest praise, I believe, one can give to any intellect. He understood that the universe doesn't care about our existence or welfare, and he epitomized the realization that our lives have meaning only to the extent that we give them meaning.
Former British prime minister Tony Blair said, "Christopher Hitchens was a complete one-off, an amazing mixture of writer, journalist, polemicist and unique character. He was fearless in the pursuit of truth and any cause in which he believed. And there was no belief he held that he did not advocate with passion, commitment and brilliance. He was an extraordinary, compelling and colorful human being whom it was a privilege to know.
George Eaton of the New Statesman wrote, "He is determined to ensure that he is not remembered simply as a 'lefty who turned right' or as a contrarian and provocateur. Throughout his career, he has retained a commitment to the Enlightenment values of reason, secularism, and pluralism. His targets-Mother Teresa, Bill Clinton, Henry Kissinger, God-are chosen not at random, but rather because they have offended one or more of these principles. The tragedy of Hitchens's illness is that it came at a time when he enjoyed a larger audience than ever. The great polemicist is certain to be remembered, but, as he was increasingly aware, perhaps not as he would like."
The Chronicle of Higher Education asked if Hitchens was the last public intellectual.
In 2015 an annual prize of $50,000 was established in his honor by The Dennis and Victoria Ross Foundation for "an author or journalist whose work reflects a commitment to free expression and inquiry, a range and depth of intellect, and a willingness to pursue the truth without regard to personal or professional consequence".
Far from a hateful, angry drunk my friend.

He and his ilk will sleep walk us to our deaths someday owing to this refusal to see things for what they are ..
All this is not in any way to downplay the suffering of the people of Gaza !!

They want to exterminate the Gazans though they keep talking about Hamas. Bombed hospitals & schools, today & yesterday. Hamas is merely an excuse. & the Americans are now running to Mahmoud Abbas whereas Hamas was created by the Israelis with US help to marginalise the PLO. For years they called Arafat & the PLO terrorists.

He was eloquent indeed; but hand waving issues, and giving misleading explanations to justify Israel's position. Anyone who is just and have knowledge of the facts will have no problem in understanding that Israel as an occupying, apartheid regime is the root cause of all of these problems. They are quick to vilify Hamas whose retaliations are sporadic, limited, constrained and has the support of people only because everyone believes there is legitimate reasons to pushback on the offensives of the terror state of Israel.
